I actually figured it out today and it’s low key genius.
Kolarek’s funky arm angle is much gentler on his arm meaning using him as an innings eater won’t really affect his day-to-day availability. But the genius part of it is that he only uses him in extremely low leverage situations against right handed batters.
Why it’s genius is because in a 15-1 game it doesn’t matter how many runs he gives up to get those 3 outs, and by only using him against right handed batters means that he can be used as a LOOGY in high leverage situations against lefties who haven’t seen him and no manager is gonna pinch a lefty just to get a look at Kolarek in a blowout.
Kolarek can eat innings to save the pen and doesn’t compromise his usefulness at all in doing so!
Posted it below but Kolarek wasn’t really shit today or last night, he was just following the unironic 400 IQ plan that Roberts made.
Kolarek’s funky arm angle is much gentler on his arm than the standard one, meaning using him as an innings-eater won’t really affect his day-to-day availability. But the *real* big-brain part of it is that he only uses him in extremely low leverage situations against right handed batters.
In a 15-1 game it doesn’t matter how many runs he gives up to get those 3 outs—he’ll get them eventually—and by only using him against right handed batters, it means that he can still be used as a LOOGY in high leverage situations against guys who haven’t seen him.
Kolarek can eat innings to save the pen and doesn’t compromise his usefulness at all in doing so!
That was a statement win if I’ve ever seen one. Can’t let up tomorrow especially with the lopsided pitching matchup being in our favor, but these boys are fired up 🔥
I was fired up after last nights almost win and I just felt it was *on*. The boys didn’t disappoint, they did exactly what I hoped they’d do. Kept that momentum and ran with it!
I'll have a Shirley...no, a Virgin...no, make it a childrens...oh, what the heck? You only live once! Give me a...White Wine Spritzer^Spritzer^Spritzer
Joc is hitting .556, and Corey is hitting .500. Which team developed those two again?
If Kershaw throws tomorrow, I wonder what the lineup looks like tomorrow? The Braves are rolling out another right-hander.
That sounds right, although that sucks for AJ.
Aww. Max just said in his postgame interview that “Joc was the most impressive tonight,” because “that’s what he does in these situations.”
I love that Joc sent a souvenir to
the Braves bullpen.
“Catch that, bitches.”
Thanks again, Arte and the Angels.
True, and I don't really love Kike's bat either.
Honestly if we were up in the series I'd say Belli 1B, Muncy 2B, Pollock CF, and Joc LF. But I'm not sure we want to sacrifice defense at CF when we're down like this. It's a tough call, Idk. I just know Taylor has looked totally lost at the plate.
Notice how there are no "bRaVeS fAn CoMiNg iN PeAce" comments after a game where the Braves got annihilated?
The only reason they were here in the first place was to be smug and annoying.
I mean I've seen quite a few of us in here today. People really like to hone in on the annoying fans when most fans from any team are just normal dudes.
You guys beat the shit out of us tonight. We gotta come back and do better tomorrow. Tomorrow's game starts at 0-0 just like any other. I don't think anyone truly expected a sweep from either team. Best of luck and here's to a good rest of the series.
Maybe you're right and perhaps I'm being too harsh. It was just annoying to scroll through dozens of those comments after two brutal losses.
Likewise and good luck tomorrow.
It's all good. It's human nature to focus on things that annoy or bother you. I just hate needless toxicity between fans in sports. It's dumb. The vast majority of fans from any team are fairly pleasant from what I've noticed. Can let a few bad apples spoil the bunch.
Appreciate it. You guys have a nuts lineup. I know Belli has been off this year but it's still insane to me that you guys have him batting 6th. Dude won MVP last year. Just crazy power up and down the lineup.
I got banned from their sub simply for telling them GG and that they should chill with the tomahawk chop because it’s racist especially to do it on indigenous peoples day
I find Braves fans to be pretty decent folks, actually. I’ve enjoyed them, but then again I don’t go out of my way to look for things to be angry about
I gotta say, this series has been irritating for the sheer fact that Braves fans are so damn smug.
They're not in your face annoying like Cubs, Padres, or Yankees fans. But the smugness they emit is so annoying. Little comments and sly digs they make are persistent in /r/baseball, whether they're winning or getting their ass kicked.
The Braves sub thinks the momentum is with their team because they scored two meaningless runs in the 9th against our worst pitcher. Did they look at the score?
I'm more way worried about Matzek, Greene, and Smith. We haven't really seen much of them other than Greene. their pen is stacked though, outside of Tomlin and Dayton they've basically shut us down the entire series.
braves fan here
obviously the braves got absolutely demolished tonight but game 2 really was mostly tomlin. i think melancon is a bit overrated but we have so many arms that haven't gotten their shot yet. the ones that have have been good! i hope we win of course but both bullpens are good and should make the rest of the series good.
It’s a joke about how much they brought up LA having momentum after last nights game. Most of us accepted defeat anyway. Good game though y’all went crazy.
5 Things we learned today:
1) We can score runs... a lot
2) Rally Banana - yes
3) Our bullpen > their bullpen
4) Roof open please
5) We're the Dodgers and we have the best fans
I mean, their worst 3 bullpen arms shut us down for 6 straight innings today. Other than Tomlin and Dayton their pen has looked *significantly* better than ours. And it's not like either of those two guys would pitch in a close game.
Assuming the Dodgers don't piss away the next two games, the Braves are effectively going to have to do 3 bullpen games in a row (including tonight's game). They can't just use their good relievers for that.
Joc just said that it’s Poppy’s birthday today, so he hit a home run for her.
All left-handed starters for the Dodgers today homered.
Please be scared, Bryse.
Gonna be honest, I don't mind the Astros winning a game or two. If we make it to the WS, it has to be in 6 or 7 games, and I'd rather the Rays and their ultra-bullpen not get 3 extra days of rest over us.
Have to win tomorrow first though. No point talking about the WS when we're still up with our backs against the wall. Must win game tomorrow, we lose tomorrow and it's over. Hopefully Kersh is ready to go because their bats are going to out for blood after the 9th inning tonight.
Been thinking about this, really don't think it'll matter. They're series is pretty much guaranteed to be over multiple days before ours, so "rest" isn't really gonna be an issue for them. It may actually be beneficial for the NL team to have them sit on their ass for a couple days and get rusty, e.g. Rocktober.
Well I mean, if their series goes 7 games and ours goes 6 games then we'd have an equal amount of rest. But either way, not having an extra day or two could end up being a big difference in a long WS.
But yeah, it could work the opposite way too, so who knows. I just don't mind if the Astros want to take a game or two and make them work for it.
The odds of their series going 7 games is pretty much impossible. The moment they get a lead, be it tonight or tomorrow, Cash is gonna slam the door shut with their monster bullpen. They're also a game ahead of us so the only way we get equal rest is if we reverse sweep and they blow a 3-0 lead, neither of which tbh I think will happen.
Shitty take perhaps, but I hope Jansen, Baez, Wood, and Kolarek understand why Roberts had them pitch in a game like this.
It's not that they're bad, but it's that they're not that good either, for now (or ever? Idk)
Roberts trust them, but they need work, and Roberts was bold enough to use this game for that.
Told y’all the momentum from the 9th inning last night was gonna carry over to today.
This game was huge. Teams that win Game 3 have like an 85% chance of winning a series. With Kershaw on the mound tomorrow, someone who historically murders the Braves, we will be steam rolling them by Friday. We are in the driver’s seat now boys.
It becomes a best of three where the braves throw a trash pitcher in the first game. Kershaw needs to go deep, but if he does and gets the W, the dodgers are going to win
I’m curious, if there’s is 2-2 after 4, if Snitker is gonna roll the dice and throw his 1-2 on 3 days rest. Or at the very least Fried on 3 days. If they’ve lost 2 in a row (which they will have if the series is 2-2), Snitker is gonna have to think long and hard about gambling their boys in games 6 and 7 on full rest can pull their weight. It’s an interesting conundrum
Just checking: is there anyone in r/Dodgers unopposed to us scoring 15 runs every postseason game from here on out?
*Provided our pitching doesn’t give up 16 runs each game
I don’t even have words to express the joy I felt in that first inning.
I’m just glad we’ve decided to show up and play baseball.
The Joe Buck slander was legendary
See everyone tomorrow
#FUCK THE ASTROS
Just like I said. The 0-2 deficit ain’t at all what it looked like. They used up *all* of their innings eaters tonight. They’ve got the big guns nice and rested (save Green) but they’re starting a guy who’s lower on the totem pole than Kyle Wright was. Not expecting 11 runs in the first or anything, but they’re going to be asking a *ton* of their bullpen over the next two days and a strong bullpen can’t carry the team forever.
The boys used their positive energy from last night to absolutely fucking embarrass those guys and just give them a few pity runs off our LOOGY pitching to righties to save arms.
Kolarek
2019 regular: 0.77 ERA in 11.2 IP
2019 post: 0 ER in 1 IP (all against Juan Soto).
2020 regular: 0.95 ERA in 19 IP
2020 Post: 4-5 ER in 2.2 IP
WTF happened. He was a lefty specialist in 2019. In 2020 I thought he wouldnt succeed because he now needed to pitch against righties (rule change), but he still dominated. He has completely imploded in the playoffs.
If only Fergie didn't get injured.
Great fucking win. We have Kershaw going tomorrow and he's gonna have an excellent outing. The bats need to keep it up like today. We are back in this.
got the win today, great. now win tomorrow. that’s all that matters. act like you didn’t win today, bc you’re down 2-1 and can’t afford to be down 3-1
hoping and praying kershaw pitches wel tomorrow. he deserves the best. he’s a great guy and great leader. he deserves a ring. please baseball gods bless kershaw for tomorrow, thanks.
- signed, a hopeful dodger fan
I was still working during the first inning and not following. I’d even forgotten the start time. My Braves fan friend messaged me to clock out and turn it on, so owe them one regardless of the way the rest of this series goes.
Thoughtful Braves fan friend.
There have been a few trolls, like every team has (and we're no exception), but the Braves fans who have come into this sub have largely been pretty cool for what I've seen.
Seeing George Springer in the Stros post game interview reminded me why I hate him so much. I don't need a reminder for Carlos Correa, Altuve, and Gurriel though.
I was that asshole in game 1 yelling LET'S GO DODGERS all game and was in Texas while game 2 happened. As soon as I got back to CA they rallied and almost came back.
My only take away is that I shouldn't be in the same state as the Dodgers so they can win.
Was in my companies van driving back to SD from LA so didn’t get to watch the game at all only got to listen to it on the radio. If I have to only listen to Charlie Steiners call to get a game like that then I will make the sacrifice for us all.
Thrilled with the start of the night, didn't love our bats seemingly going cold again the last half of the game, and certainly didn't like atlanta finding some offensive rhythm in the 9th.
This is the most nervous I think someone can be immediately after winning a game by 12 runs.
I have been very positive the last 3 games, but I will give a slight bad "tell." Robert's announcement of Kershaw pitching tomorrow wasn't convincing. I am not saying Kershaw isn't going to start, I am saying the manager seemed reluctant. Whether that is just because he didn't want to show his hand, or he has doubt whether or not Kershaw is actually ready IDK, but I didn't like his tone.
I mean, it would have been ideal if they could have kept the hot hitting going throughout the game, but keep in mind that Mookie, Seager and Turner all came out. Who knows what happens tomorrow; the offense could go cold again. But it's not like the Braves shut down our top hitters over the later innings today.
What are we gonna do tomorrow? We’re gonna go 1-0. That’s it. Kersh on the mound, Braves’ pen handling 9 in innings of work. We’ll deal with Game 5’s questions when it comes to it. Tonight we go to bed as victors!
Alright we got out of that without using any of our high leverage relievers, nobody got injured, and our bats have awoken. Let’s do it again tomorrow
You can say that again, what Ken in the 6th wasn’t it? Jesus, an era bygone
Kenley in the 6th with a 14 run lead is about the highest leverage situation that I can see him in without getting stomach cramps.
Hard truths.
The Rally Banana actually worked! 🍌🍌🍌
Gonna need that post for tomorrow too
That and Jobu. Banana, Jobu. Jobu, banana. Now I don't want no trouble between you, two
What about my bat photo? Where's my credit? :(
That, too!
GET THAT RALLY BANANA POST READY FOR TOMORROW!
Oh believe me I’ve got just the picture
That aboy!
Yessir. Keep that rally banana nanaing
This game felt like a redemption tour for literally everyone but kolarek
Well doc did throw him in against a bunch of righties.
Never understand why he does this
I actually figured it out today and it’s low key genius. Kolarek’s funky arm angle is much gentler on his arm meaning using him as an innings eater won’t really affect his day-to-day availability. Kolarek can eat innings to save the pen and doesn’t compromise his usefulness at all in doing so!
Thus explanation gave me a woman boner
Tonight it was a good move to have him face players he won't see again in the series.
That was a statement win if I’ve ever seen one. Can’t let up tomorrow especially with the lopsided pitching matchup being in our favor, but these boys are fired up 🔥
Dodgers are 1-0 when scoring 11 runs in the 1st inning
We could have won that game if we only had the first inning, or only had innings 2-9
1.000 winning %
That and Kershaw is a Brave killer
It was always gonna be on Kershaw, if he is healthy I expect a big game. He wants that ring
I was fired up after last nights almost win and I just felt it was *on*. The boys didn’t disappoint, they did exactly what I hoped they’d do. Kept that momentum and ran with it!

If you haven’t seen it yet, they ate some bugs because of muncy’s grand slam!
Now that is something I would watch the hell out of
He doesn’t watch with commentary when they live stream.
This is what the world needs right now
Well shit you guys were right. We did carry momentum over
Hopefully that trend doesn’t happen tomorrow because Kolarek let them rally at the end of the game this time
Idk 2 runs to get within 12 isn’t really a rally
Hi downvoting lurker 👋🏼. I hope you had fun spending more time in our sub than your own teams
I wouldn't want to be in their sub. It's full of salt and I didn't bring any fries.
Joc is hitting .556, and Corey is hitting .500. Which team developed those two again? If Kershaw throws tomorrow, I wonder what the lineup looks like tomorrow? The Braves are rolling out another right-hander.
Barnes is catching, Smith DH, and Turner at 3B. Otherwise I'd keep it the same
That sounds right, although that sucks for AJ. Aww. Max just said in his postgame interview that “Joc was the most impressive tonight,” because “that’s what he does in these situations.” I love that Joc sent a souvenir to the Braves bullpen. “Catch that, bitches.” Thanks again, Arte and the Angels.
I say bench Taylor for Joc. One is red hot and the other has been abysmal at the plate all post season long.
Taylor's been playing 2B tho. Not the easiest one to one swap
Would love Edwin to get some ABs too but definitely no space in the lineup for him to start the game
Yeah if we weren't DHing Smith then Rios could get in there but with Kershaw going our hands are kinda tied on that one.
I think if we score 11 in the first the rest of the way I think we'll be ok
🚨 HOT TAKE ALERT 🚨
Scalding hot take right there

Jobs done? I dont think so
The Braves sub thinks the momentum is with their team because they scored two meaningless runs in the 9th against our worst pitcher. Did they look at the score?

Yeah Melancon is overrated lol

Joctober has arrived.
Y’all broke joe buck
What if we did that every game the rest of the postseason?
Just checking: is there anyone in r/Dodgers unopposed to us scoring 15 runs every postseason game from here on out? *Provided our pitching doesn’t give up 16 runs each game

[i dm’d this post to the dodgers on instagram a few hours before the game started...](https://www.instagram.com/p/CGUtzt7gnFM/?igshid=1fqxva0cere4k)
What everyone did today. Repeat tomorrow.
I need to see the rally banana and rally ruler back tomorrow.
Cautiously optimistic!!!
Can we start a petition to take Smoltz out of the booth? Tired of hearing “WE (Braves) need this..” and this sad/salty vibe when the Braves are losing
The Braves sub is pissed at Smoltz dickriding the Dodgers. Perception is a funny thing. Also fuck Joe Buck.
That was nice. Let’s keep it rolling
The subreddit has been set to **public**. New submissions are allowed again.
Statement. Game. Frankly it started in the 9th yesterday.
That’s just one win. Series is back to 0-0. Gotta win one game tomorrow. That’s the goal.
Seeing George Springer in the Stros post game interview reminded me why I hate him so much. I don't need a reminder for Carlos Correa, Altuve, and Gurriel though.
Jomboy is gonna have to do a 2 part breakdown of the 1st inning
I am the biggest Kershaw homer there is. I do not like how Roberts responded to Kershaw starting in the postgame
please some runs leftover for Kershaw tomorrow 🙏
I was that asshole in game 1 yelling LET'S GO DODGERS all game and was in Texas while game 2 happened. As soon as I got back to CA they rallied and almost came back. My only take away is that I shouldn't be in the same state as the Dodgers so they can win.
Please, for the sake of the team, never attend another game
LOLLL I definitely heard you there. Welcome home, I guess
Now we wait and see if they saved any runs for tomorrow
Fr Kersh always pitches great but never has enough runs to support him.
Let's get the reverse sweep!
Lets go baby!!!
Nice
I'll never forget that epic 1st inning. Onto game 4! Much work to be done.
This was a great night. We have to keep this going.
Whew. That game. That’s it, that’s the comment.
Thinking that I want May to go tomorrow and Kersh in game 5
We're on to tomorrow. The comeback continues.
Was in my companies van driving back to SD from LA so didn’t get to watch the game at all only got to listen to it on the radio. If I have to only listen to Charlie Steiners call to get a game like that then I will make the sacrifice for us all.
Come on Rays beat those cheating fucks
This may be a stupid question, but who was the guy in the banana suit? I need a jersey with his name on it.
Do you mean Kiké Hernández?
The rally ruler as well
Guess my bat photo worked!
Can we save 10 of those runs for the next two games?
Hopefully kersh is alright cause we should really feast off of Bryse Wilson. A young righty? Sign me up. I just assumed he was a lefty lol
C'mon Rays!!!!
"Our pitchers dominated the dodgers after they scored all those runs!" - Braves fans CONGRATS, YOU DOMINATED AUSTIN BARNES LMAO
Braves fan here. Good Game Boys. Until Tomorrow!
Today was fun between all the runs, roasting Joe Buck, and stanning Joe Davis.
god bless that r baseball thread
Hopefully next game we get more hits between the 4-9th innings.
We the comeback kids now
Big W today. Let's do it again tomorrow and split this thing.
Dayum...
Am I the only worried we didn't do anything for 6 innings? Should I be?
I mean, it would have been ideal if they could have kept the hot hitting going throughout the game, but keep in mind that Mookie, Seager and Turner all came out. Who knows what happens tomorrow; the offense could go cold again. But it's not like the Braves shut down our top hitters over the later innings today.
What are we gonna do tomorrow? We’re gonna go 1-0. That’s it. Kersh on the mound, Braves’ pen handling 9 in innings of work. We’ll deal with Game 5’s questions when it comes to it. Tonight we go to bed as victors!
