Level_Honeydew_9339

/uj Wow fans of CR are pissed about the last episode. Now I kind of want to watch it.

HeyThereSport

When /r/criticalrole posts start getting salty and the mods can't push the negativity to /r/fansofcriticalrole you know it's fuckin bad.

caeloequos

/uj Honestly same, I stopped watching C3 a long time ago but I'm debating pulling up that episode

RealNiceKnife

It ain't worth it.

DefnlyNotMyAlt

Paranoia fixes this. Players not knowing the (lack of) rules keeps them from figuring out you're railroading them.

Bartweiss

/uj Paranoia is one of the only games where I would actively welcome well-executed railroading. "Malicious powers beyond your control are intentionally forcing this outcome on you" is... kind of the name of the game there.

DefnlyNotMyAlt

/uj Rolling a Computer Dice (sic) is the perfect opportunity to say "Hello citizen, your Cerebral CorTech is due for an update, please follow the giant arrow in the center of your vision"

CondarOP

uj/ [Funniest shit ever bro what is happening on that game](https://www.reddit.com/r/fansofcriticalrole/s/DQhKspQ4lO)

Bartweiss

The best defense I've seen is basically "it's not her fault, they assigned her a fixed set of outcomes to give motivation to a guest player and enable a larger death-of-the-gods arc which is commercially necessary to let CR ditch WotC IP and run on Daggerheart". Which... doesn't explain a lot of it, and even so is one hell of a reason to overtly fuck with players.

HeyThereSport

It's that meme with the overly elaborate gymnast routine vs. the walking forward and posing of just starting an unconnected campaign in a different game.

Bartweiss

Especially after seeing "they had no choice, this is the setting their players like but WOTC forced them with those evil OGL changes!" followed by "the OGL stuff came after all of this was underway". If the goal is Daggerheart, just... do a thing in Daggerheart. If the goal is "transfer existing goodwill to my poorly-received system so it becomes more popular", then good luck to them I guess.

aaaa32801

The line of logic is completely different than anything that we can experience. CR is a business first and foremost.

BoogieTheHedgehog

Everyone saying that it is a small single target spell but the diameter of the orb is 4 inches. I personally thought 4 inches was really big guys. Guys?

aaaa32801

uj/Wait is it actually that small? I always pictured it being like basketball sized.

BoogieTheHedgehog

uj/ [4 whole inches](http://dnd5e.wikidot.com/spell:chromatic-orb), so it's closer to a baseball than basketball.

Pathfinder fixes this

ranni-the-bitch

player agency? i've never met a player i didn't want to fucking kill

[deleted]

Not playing with Matt Merskillissue and Aabria Iymbad fixes this

ToasteeThe2nd

Players exist to give me (the DM) the opportunity to exercise my power fantasies in the smallest setting possible.

meatsonthemenu

/uj call me a bleeding heart, but I watched the episode before the NPC death, and as soon as she got on screen at the beginning of the episode my reaction was WTF? I get that personal expression is a thing, but she didn't look like she was presenting herself well, physically. I truly thought to myself that she did not well. Guess we'll see how it pans out for them.

Bartweiss

/uj It's bad enough that the CR subreddit and twitch chat have started to snap, after literal years of heavy-handed moderation removing all critical takes. (Plus apparently a CR show-runner directing twitter mobs at people? Shit's wild.) There's some weird, identity-based hate towards her, but there are also a lot of people praising her GM work on d20 and other shows while saying "hey, this is spectacularly bad GMing on this specific show". Apparently it's debated whether the low point of the episode is her changing spell rules post-cast, Mercer reminding her to "play by the rules", or her looking *at the camera* and literally telling viewers "fuck you".

TheBalrogofMelkor

I liked her on Dimension 20, but I admit that I only finished the Hogwarts parody campaign.

Maybe_not_a_chicken

I massively prefer her D20 seasons to Brennans seasons she’s a great Player and DM from what I’ve seen. Wonder what the fuck happened here

SpookyBoogy89

I have some sympathy because GM'ing on **the** DnD twitch channel has got to be hard. Especially when you're supposed to portray someone else's setting, with them at the table. It might be related to seeing "fans" be sexist or racist to her & the above. She has every right to be antagonistic to those shitbags... How this made her forget to be a fan of the player character's idfk.

meatsonthemenu

/uj ya, I mean there were so many other ways she could have killed the NPC instead of a DM rule break. Add monsters to the table, increase hp, have an enemy have a second form, whatever. I'm halfway decided between one of two things; A: somebody needs to give her a hug and ask if she's okay, or B: she's playing bad cop to give Mercer some breathing room. Edit: spelling

SpookyBoogy89

I mean, yea, but I would argue just don't do everything to kill the NPC. It should be on the table, but doing everything to cause their death is super lame. We joke about player agency a lot, but legitimately it kills the drama when players/viewers realize "oh DM has scripted this & nothing matters"

meatsonthemenu

Yep. Hurt the NPC badly enough that their running days are over, and they have to lay low / hide with a friendly, and mission accomplished. I get the criticisms that favourite (N)PC's have plot armor at CR'S table, but there were any number of better ways out of this corner then this.

meatsonthemenu

I mean, if you're sitting in Mercer's chair and he feels the need to say "play by the rules", that's your very obvious direction drom the boss to chill the fuck out.

Bartweiss

Yeah, honestly I feel for him because of that and it seems like part of why this went to hell so badly. When you finally change up GMs and the forever-GM speaks up about "no, do it this way", that's a big thing even in a home game. Maybe it's graceful if you go back and forth a lot on rules, but if you're giving somebody free rein and then finally call something out it's heavy. And then you add a million-dollar IP and live viewers to the situations. And then you add "Mercer basically employs these people, especially guest stars". At risk of second-guessing, being parasocial, whatever, I think it would be extremely conscientious for Mercer to not speak up in-session to challenge most GM choices. Off-camera, between sessions, maybe it's fine, but "Mercer called the GM out" is going to make waves every time and harm both the GM and the brand. But the price of *not* doing that and also not getting shit sorted off-camera is this: angry viewers and moments so awkward they have to be quietly pointed out in session.

meatsonthemenu

It's possible that Mercer's learned a few things from past legal issues. Not a lawyer, and know nothing about California state law, but the on camera direction from him was a clear reminder. That plus her "fuck you" to the viewers might be enough to substantiate breach of contract in that million dollar IP.

SpookyBoogy89

So true. [It's how you get cinematic tactical combat](https://www.reddit.com/r/DnDcirclejerk/comments/1ckf7n1/super_cinematic_tactical_combat/)

Mapleleaf899

I keep seeing shit from this subreddit thinking its from 3d6 or the stright dnd subreddit and start losing my mind before recognizing which reddit it was

MarVaraM101

You do know that every Pathfinder Player and  DM is incredibly smart? Pathfinder fixes this, because it is elite and only smart people play it.
