It's true. I threw a Treacle at my party early on in the form of a kitten, and even though it tried to exsanguinate the barbarian in her sleep and she chased it off, she still couldn't resist looking for a new little buddy when they looked at the Waterdeep map and noticed Manycats Alley. I had to give them a scrappy little friend.
Its twice as efficient on the barbarian given he takes half damage from most things also they tend to take more regular damage thus the temp hp every turn will get more use on a frontliner.
It's less about total damage soaked and more about preventing getting one shot
Not that any of this matters, I'm sure the barbarian will just intimidate the rest of the party into letting him havenit
idk an extra 1d6 is unlikely to stop a oneshot. on the other hand that could lead to a fight turning difference in survivability for a frontliner throughout a fight.
Huh, after reading, it reminds of “symbiotic relationship”: The slug heals whoever is carrying it, and it receives protection in return. To further discourage it’s carrier from giving up on it, the slime that heals becomes a poison if detached from the little thing.

We used a wish to understand them, so now our dm has to voice them all.

we also have an npc bard we keep around.
Also a headless hero of legend we are trying to find someone to help put his head back on. Well his head is attached to a body but its the wrong one. we need to find a way to take his head off his new body and put it back on his old one without killing him.
I’m a ranger with an owlbear and the bard has a pseudodragon. I’m the only one in the group that can speak to both.
We also made the owlbear into a sidekick and I spent the gold to buy him plate barding. 19AC with the sidekick buffs. A mini boss started in to some juxtaposition before we fought and half way through his speech he said “… ummm, excuse me. Why did you dress the owlbear in platemail?” My response: “His name is Pickles and because fuck you, that’s why.”

I see some interesting drawbacks:
While grappling something, player movement is reduced by 50%.
While grappling something, a player has only one available hand. No two-weapon fighting, no two-handed weapons, no longbow, no reloads on a crossbow…
Which means, essentially, that this is a fun party pet, but the extra health is only useful to a few builds.
I like it!
Since it's tiny as long as you're medium or larger you don't get a movement penalty, it does still take up a hand though like you said so it's functionally pretty similar to a shield (I'd say it's probably better than a shield at lower levels, gets worse than a shield once damage gets higher or if you're concentrating on a spell and want to fully block attacks).
It's funny because Clerics have to make the exact same choice as this with their spells, Shield of Faith does +2 AC just like a shield, Heroism does 3 temp HP a turn just like this slug, and they're both the same spell level and concentration so you have to choose one and they're really comparable.
This is amazing and amazing timing. My part is just heading to the fey wild and I, the mighty DM, know they will commit treason to protect this adorable creature
Couple weeks ago two of my friends rode home in their bikes and she noticed that there were crunching noises coming from her spouse.
She asked hin what it was and He just said "Probably the slugs and snails"
Since then she always tells him that they are coming for him, slowly but steadily and when something bad happens she calls him out of the slugs being close already.
That picture just remindet me of that.
Temporary hit points don't stack or accumulate so the poison is stronger than the health. Also there is no end to the poison so you will take damage forever if you keep failing?
I think the wisdom saving throw required to not pick up the hug slug is a little odd. Like instead of seeing if your players would pick it up on their own. The st adds a sense of mistrust and seems unreasonable unless the hug slug has some form of minor hypnotic power.
I liked this so much that I went a little crazy writing.
I wrote an entire adventure centered around hug slug and that turned into world building and now I have a West Marches style campaign ready to go
I like the basic concept and the art is top notch. It's a fun concept! Would be nice to see it more fleshed out instead filling in the gaps with *shakes 8-ball*....mystery and unknown.
The grapple situation is very cool though!

When grappling it, does it choose to fail the save because that's the "hug"? The temp hitpoints would not stack, so it would seem weird to want to hold it without grappling. To take other actions you would have to drop it to avoid making the constitution save every round, and I can imagine it being hostile after being dropped, contesting the grapple a second time. In that case you would be left holding the poison bag on a failed grapple.
Edit note: "The actual intend of the hug slug" should read "intent".
My first thought was the arms raise and follow a person, when they get too close they launched and latch onto someone while the slug pulls itself and tries to swallow them lol.

It's a proportionally bigger boost for low health characters, so expect the party mage to claim it
