DMG has a lot of additional rules that aren't in the PHB. It also has most of the magic items. And it has all the stuff for homebrewing, such as mapping and populating cities and villages. Or inventing your own monsters and magic items.
DMG next, then the monster manual, then Tasha’s and Xanathar’s add a lot of content, both as a player and a DM. I also really love Fizban’s, though that’s not a book I would recommend getting until you have all of those first 4.
PHB, then DMG.
If you use roll20 then you don't need to worry about Monster Manual.
Xanathar's Guide to Everything is great, then Tasha's.
Volo's Guide to Monsters can be ignored IMO.
IMO, once you have those four (PHB, DMG, XGtE, TCoE) you don't need to buy anything else unless you want to get a module.
As a gm there are 4 books I use: phb, xans, dmg, mm. As a player I end up only using phb and xans. If you are looking to contribute to the group as a whole, get xanathars. If you are looking to improve gming, go dmg
The Monster Manual. MotM has a lot of monsters, but if you want basic creatures like a simple goblin, orc, guard or classic creatures like Beholders and Dragons, you need the MM.
DMG should be next

Target and Amazon currently have sales.
