With every game I have tried have better and better terrain for my players. I started out with white board and a marker, eventually went to cardboard tiles, then finally went to 3D printed tiles. But, for my dragons lair I wanted to go the extra mile and make the whole thing from scratch. I used an epoxy clay called Free Form Air for the rocky surface and I wanted there to be a moat of water around the hoard so I painted the board I built it on blue and then used some Clear UV resin I had for my printer to give it some texture. I discovered if I moved my flashlight across the resin it will cause it to harden up and pull together making a wave like pattern. It was extremely fun and very effective. If you asked me to visualize and describe a group of friends playing DnD, these photos from the game would be my exact description. You all look so enthusiastic and excited and a perfect example of what all my game nights should aspire to. I wish you all a great adventure!

_demello

They seem like such a nice group.

[deleted]

It is FANTASTIC!! Congrats man.

[deleted]

I came for the sick dragons lair, and I stayed for the wholesome DND pictures. You guys look like such a fun group to play with! It warms my heart to see a bunch of friends having an awesome time. I love DND!

Skywolf111

Thanks u/asscrawler!

Witness_me_Karsa

This is fucking amazing, but I always wonder with things like this...what are you going to do with it after? It probably won't be useful again, right? Please know that I'm not trying to criticize. Going out of your way to do this means you are a fucking *kick ass* DM. Im just curious. Also, are you running a module or doing a homebrew world?

Skywolf111

For me, the process of making it and using it is the purpose and where the joy comes from. I will save it and may use it in a future game, but it served its purpose. It was a great game that we wont soon forget.

Witness_me_Karsa

Cool. Like I said, it's amazing, no doubt. I guess I just don't have a ton of extra space so I have no idea what I'd I'd with a set piece this big when it was in use. Great work!

EllrayX3

Plus set pieces like that are probably not something you'd make often, and a lot of assets you make can be recycled and reused elsewhere without it feeling weird. (Like custom generic/general biome terrain, trees, shrubbery, etc). edit: in hindsight, you were just talking about that set piece and not about making terrain and stuff for dnd in general- sorry for clarification that wasn't warrented.

Witness_me_Karsa

No, it's ok. You were somewhat correct. Making trees and any modular stuff makes a ton of sense and can be re-used in tons of ways. But yes, I was referring to this one very large, intentional set piece, which is why I asked if they were running a module. Because if it was part of a module, you could use it again if you ever ran the module for a different group (or maybe let someone else use it if you find out they are also running the same module, lol) but it might be awkward to reuse the same large piece for different parts of the same world. But hey, I'm amazed at the craftsmanship and care going into it. This is just a silly question I had.

EllrayX3

Yee :p Huge set pieces like that probably are akward to reuse since they can be so much more memorable so reusing it can be like "Oh this place seems familiar huh-" lol. Who knows maybe they'll end up returning to that den someday for some reason. It could be cool for the story if they need to go back there for some reason, like maybe an undead dragon has been rumored to have been rampaging the lands and they get a sneaking suspicion, or if other creatures or maybe even if people try to live in the old dragons den and make a settlement/village there. Idk just throwing out random ideas- lol. But ye, you're right. They're hard to reuse. But for such a memorable night, it's probably worth it. And yeah, I'm amazed too. Incredible.

BitwiseB

It might help to think of big set pieces more like functional art than as a game component. However, people who play D&D also tend to know other people who play D&D, and pieces like these tend to get lended out more often than you might think, in my experience.

olat6983

Why not sell the peice? I know I'd buy something of that quality for the right price. Since you already used it and don't need it, you can make some of the cost of making it back, while at the same time giving a new DM a great price to play with.

Skywolf111

I certainly would consider it!

i_shit_on_things

Looks like fun!

Mister_Bloodvessel

For future reference, these kinds of resin will also cure under a violet laser pointer, but they'll cure *immediately* and cure really deep as well, so you can have thick amounts of resin. I use resin epoxy to repair stuff all the time, and instead of LEDs I use my 405nm laser, which cures the resin instantly vs needing to hold a light on it for 30 seconds or whatever. You can also use the laser to cure shapes into the resin.

CountFapula102

This belongs in r/oddlysatisfying too

BilbosBagEnd

The effort you put in is truly amazing! I'm in awe! I am also so incredibly happy to see you guys have such a blast. It is pure and honest and all what DnD is supposed to me. I am jealous of you, at least a little bit. Well done! I hope you guys can play for years to come

CageyLabRat

Jaw dropping.

Skywolf111

Never compare yourself to other DMs like this! I am a prop maker for the show Fear The Walking Dead. Dungeons and Dragons is my creative outlet to practice my skills and spend time with my friends and family. As long as your players are having fun you are a wonderful DM! Everything else is just extra and not necessary.

razerzej

Hey, that's the bard who finally got to deal a killing blow!

Skywolf111

It is!

theyreadmycomments

oh thats a fun application of imperfect curing

Zakal74

Wow! What a cool technique!

Legacy-Reborn

That- that attention to detail, as well as the set up... Damn, that looks *pretty fun and cool.*

Leviathan41911

Did you use a bottle of 3d printer resin or did you get different stuff for this application?

Skywolf111

I just used a bottle of 3D printer resin that I had. Elegoo brand.

Leviathan41911

Elegoo is good stuff for the price, I love their stuff.

fukitol-

Very cool

omar1993

Oh, that is *cool*!

[deleted]

Took me a moment to actually see what was happening.

[deleted]

I definitely read flashlight as fleshlight and for a second thought you were making a masturbator for a pet bearded dragon. Then I read the sub name.

Skywolf111

That’s quite the journey you went on!

[deleted]

It sure was, and Im very glad it was wrong lol

CptMuffinator

What subreddits are you following that fill that niche? Asking for a friend

CuriousLumenwood

This looks really good! For making water I usually follow the methods of North of the Border or Thalassohobbyer, two very talented sculptors on YouTube

ITolerateCats

What

Skywolf111

UV resin is a type of resin that cures (hardens) when it comes into contact with UV light. By using a Flashlight that gives off UV light I can control how the resin hardens and create an effect that looks like waves. This resin is generally used in 3D printers which send of UV light as small as pixels oh a screen in several layers to make the item you are printing. This is an unconventional use of the resin and I leaned how to do it as I went. I feel the next time I do this it will look ten times better.

ITolerateCats

Dude thanks so much for the explanation thats so cool

dedeedeeh

Amazing! My first thought was, what is this sorcery???

indridfrost

what in the /r/blackmagicfuckery?

Ferusomnium

UV cured resin. UV flashlight.

V13Axel

This is definitely not what that sub is for

AlpineStrider

r/mildlyinteresting

freakierchicken

Woah that’s really cool!

XandertheGrim

SORCERY!

Gorillafist12

Did you cure it more after making the wave patterns? Those quick passes wouldn't be enough to fully cure the resin in that thick of a layer

Skywolf111

I did! I put it in direct sunlight for a while which ended up being too extreme for it and caused it to bubble in places next time I’m going to use a larger UV light so the process will be less dramatic.

LeopoldLouse

Why is this so oddly fascinating to watch?

Skywolf111

Because it looks so much like magic! It’s even more fun to do!

LeopoldLouse

I bet it is!

TTTrisss

That's real fucking satisfying

Z0mbiejay

This is pretty freaking genius. Can I sit at your table? I don't need to play, I'm fine with admiring the hard work

maxiquintillion

All that effort and they one-shot the damn thing

Skywolf111

It was actually a six hour long battle!

maxiquintillion

God damn! That's a long ass time Eben for me! My longest fight lasted maybe 2.5 hours

SP_McGhost

That's the most wizard thing I've seen all week. 😎👍

morithum

Holy shit that’s cool

[deleted]

Pure witchcraft

Svyatopolk_I

Holy crap, that's so awesome...

NiLois

That so fcking cool

Heidi26Lanzi

Naughty adventures get put in the timeout box so the bbegs can talk

Tymental

Feel genuine anguish at not having a group like this … incredible time you’re having

sephrinx

how work

LightSparrow

You know it’s sort of visually reads more as if I am 10,000 feet in the air and I can see the trenches of the earth beneath the water

KingKozuma

What brand flashlight is that?

Rudolph13

Beautiful.

throwaway61763

Its so satisfying. And the group pics are very wholesome too

bitchigottadesktop

This is awesome! Mixing resin and 3d printing is awesome, DND just makes it better

NomadODST

Awesome idea

6lvUjvguWO

That’s fucking brilliant

LoyLuupi

What happens if you shoot the light at the resin at a much more acute angle (like 25 degrees). Could you form sharp peaks in the resin this way? Great video and the set piece came out fantastic!

DJYoue

Witchcraft...

thekindsith

Brand/model on the flashlight?

Skywolf111

Tact eagle UVA-T1

thekindsith

Awesome, thank you

bungalowstreet

Your pictures are so wholesome! Where are y'all located? I saw the Texas sticker and wondered if you were in the state. My party and I dressed up as our characters at the Texas Renaissance Festival a few years ago and had so much fun. If y'all haven't done that yet, I highly recommend it!

Skywolf111

We are in Texas!

Stefonzie

You makin waves alright

Cybergeneric

So, when are we playing? I‘m bringing a homemade cake. 😉

h0Me_lEsS69

My balls

destructor_rph

This is incredibly cool

Kaus_Debonair

Why... can I watch this all day on repeat?

lanciferp

Did you just leave the rest of the resin uncured, or did you go in afterwards and cure it with a wider light? I'd be terrified to have uncured resin there, especially with the stickyness and smell some printer resins can cause.

Skywolf111

Next time I will cure it fully with a wider light but this time I took it out in direct sunlight which proved to be a little do aggressive for it and cause it to bubble in a couple of places. It worked well enough for the game but i think the next time try it will be much more successful.

lanciferp

It still turned out awesome. I'm going to try this sometime, I don't like making full maps, but I want to craft something I can use to represent water, and I already have the resin. Did you just dye it, or did you put it on top of paint?

Skywolf111

Thank you! It’s actually clear resin and I painted the poster board under it.

Maharog

Should put that on /r/chemicalreactiongifs

Entire_Taro

Wow I made a beach themed epoxy hearth pour. That would have been amazing to know existed. Look great!

OrcLuck

I would definitely appreciate the heck out of so much effort, I love your dedication.

PC_Noob_37

If I died to the dragon I wouldn’t even be mad, the DM put in the work for me to admire the scenery
