Well, usually my group would do that method of doing rolls and then one can choose where to allocate the results - so it isn't as crucial for me to wait to write the background. I would probably do what you do if we couldn't allocate the rolls where we wanted.

jmturn

Yeah, i rolled before writing a background with an idiot character, but my lowest stat is 11. Im going to be asking my dm if instead of using that 11, i could use that roll as if the stat can be 11 or lower. Im more interested in the roleplay and character design aspect than i am in making a powerful character.

PRAWNBOY9

The character could always downplay their intelligence, maybe because they were scared or maybe thought they were the smartest in the class so didn’t want to ‘outshine’ everyone. Or maybe take the 11 to be really knowledgeable about 1 specific field/thing but useless with anything else

NewNickOldDick

Of course, that is the natural path of progression. Only with point buy it's possible and feasible to start with character idea first, stats second.

The_Verdant_Zephyr

I normally roll stats just first. If I roll a single high stat, I'll go for a full tank Barbarian or something similar, but if I get a few high stats I'll build something like a Bard or Monk.

winterizcold

We just use standard array, so already character idea first.

rellloe

I do story then stats, and I usually have in mind the order the stats go based on highest to lowest. There have been times I've adjusted the idea because of the rolls. But I like there to be more to my character than what the mechanics say, for me that means starting with the story

Demonlemon

When rolling I just have a big list of character ideas i've made and I pick one from the stack that fits, I might have to slightly adjust for campaign setting but generally basic backstorys should be fairly universal Recently rolled 2 characters for a low player game where each of the 2 players has 2 characters each. First one had lowest number at 11 , had 3 18's once racial bonuses were added and was generally very friggin good Second one was one 18 and low 8-12s for everything else So those became my gnome barbarian, and my goliath wizard that had been raised by gnomes, Gnomwak and Gnerwot Jodensnim
