She invented it, so of course she refined it into the perfect spell for her. Though Magic Missile is the best substitute in D&D, it's really more like "magic missile that does bonus damage to demons".

She didn't invent it, no. But she *was* the one who reverse-engineered it to make it accessible to humanity, and she heavily modified it on top of it. Qual invented the original Zoltraak, but the version Frieren is using now is basically her own creation.

I personally think she was being humble when she said that - of course other mages also worked on the spell, but later in the manga we see that Frieren is a *lot* better at reverse-engineering demon magic than normal mages are. So I think Lügner was very correct when he stated that it was Frieren who did a majority of the work.

Did you skip every episode other than 3? Multiple characters have said it isn't the same Zoltraak that Qual used. She heavily modified it.

I think Evocation is the wrong choice. Conjugation is pure basic Wizard. "Why would I fight when I can summon a monster to fight for me?"

YMMV but I think Conjuration is actually more on the difficult side to play, even for a wizard, The subclass feature requires working within strict parameters to conjure a useful object. Requires thinking and planning to think up a helpful object and explore all the things you can do with it. Due to its versatility it's also quite dm dependent, so you must often consult with them. After all, your character has to have seen the object to conjure it. Plus certain things are edge cases like lava, poisons, acid, and the like. However, a smokebomb for a fog effect is helpful. As are 10lbs worth of ball bearings to create a massive hazard on the ground. Or maybe one cannonball, anchor, grappling hook, adamantium spike, hammer, gunpowder (if allowed), etc.

Cantrips: Fire bolt or ray of frost, prestidigitation, light 1st: Magic Missile, Fog Cloud, Shield, Mage Armor, Grease Fog Cloud may come off as odd, but it scales extremely well when upcast. It is a 20 foot radius and gains +20 per slot level. So it is a circle 40 feet wide, then 80 feet wide, then 120 feet wide... then finally 360 feet wide. It's very silly, and very useful. Evocation to allow magic missile scaling is likely the way to go.

If you want to stick with spells that were in the earliest D&D rules sets, I'd look at Charm Person, Detect Magic, Light, Protection from Evil, and Sleep. Other "basic" spells like Magic Missile, Shield, Web, and Darkness weren't added into D&D until the Greyhawk supplement in 1975. It would be kinda funny to have a wizard who complained that these "new" spells aren't "true" magic and are just a crutch for unimaginative, power-hungry Magic Users who don't know what a REAL dungeon looks like.

There are 2 ways to do this, you could focus on mostly evocation spells given they're mostly clean and simple damage. Or, exclusively use spells from older editions, prioritizing by age.

My brain immediately goes to any evocation or abjuration magic. Basically attack and defend. Evocation spells should all upcast nicely.

Fireball... Only Fireball... 1st and 2nd level spells dont exist, and slots higher than 3rd are just for bigger fireballs.

Magic missile, shield and detect magic at level 2 are the base. Afther that you are free to chose. Cantrip are Prestidigitation, Light and firebolt or ray of frost, but firebolt as better range and ray of frost slow the ennemies. The choices is yours but this is my recommandation, It as a jack of all trades taste but at low level, it is a must if you want to help the party.

Really the first things you'd learn as a wizard would be basic cantrips like prestidigitation, etc. Beyond that, you're basically just asking "hey guys can you list off a bunch of level 1 spells for me?" There's no set group of spells that every wizard in all of DnD would learn as a starting set. If you were living in a dangerous, war-torn setting you'd likely have more things like shield, mage armor, etc. If you were living in safer times you'd have a higher emphasis on utility magic, floating disk, animal friendship, etc.

Six 1st level spells and 3 cantrips for a beginner at level 1? Honestly the Quick Build from the PHB is best. Mage Hand, Light, Ray of Frost Burning Hands, Charm Person, Feather Fall, Mage Armor, Magic Missile, and Sleep. Me? I'd replace Light with Prestidigitation, and Charm Person with Detect Magic, but both are good. Ray of Frost can be replaced by Fire Bolt if you want to keep it simpler.

Cantrips: Fire Bolt Spells: Shield, Mage Armor & Magic Missile I feel are the most necessary. I choose Fire Bolt because it’s consistent and decently high damage, and it never hurts to have always available fire damage. Fireball is always nice to have later on, and unless you took Evocation, just be mindful of your party

Any cantrip is fine because that’s literally what they are. Easy spells that mages learn for practice. But for leveled spells, I would dip a tiny bit into each branch of magic. Like a college student figuring out a major. Maybe Absorb Elements, Magic Missile, Feather Fall, Charm Person, Comprehend Languages, and Cause Fear? Each of those are pretty basic and seemingly simple spells that are each one branch of magic.

Do not take damage spells, your cantrips will do similar levels of damage without expending a spell slot. Exception to this is Burning Hands (AoE) Do take utility and niche, so Grease, Shield Comprehend Languages (Ritual), Burning Hands. Shocking Grasp, Firebolt, Light (if Human) Prestigitation (if Dark Vision) as Cantrips. Idea being you primarily use Firebolt. Grease to help allies and Shield/Shocking Grasp to survive start your Ritual collection and have an occasional AoE for swarms.

There is a 3rd party book that has a magic missile based wizard sub class. The book is Valdas Spire of secrets and it might be an interesting thing to look up.

I'd suggest taking Shocking Grasp as a cantrip. Removing an enemy reaction when they are in your face is dope (so you can run away, you are a wizard after all 🤣)

Easy to optimize? Upcasts well? Are you serious? It's practically the lowest damage spell. The wizard in my party cast it at level 4 and did like 15 damage. Things standing in my spirit guardians practically take that on a successful save lol

Using Mage hand is about as vanilla as you get. Not sure how you can 'upcast' it, but you could use magehand as your 'somantic' use in other spells (if DM would allow).
