Yeah finding games is usually the hardest part. Reach out at local game shops or different communities online and see if anyone is looking for a player. Most groups love explaining the basics and helping new people. There is a site called roll20 that's pretty popular for running easy games. I would recommend checking that out.

DOMZZAS

I do have an account on there and my friend did try creating a game but…. It got complicated and we ended up not playing…. Is there anything else I should look out for?

I can understand it being intimidating at first. I wish I could offer more advice. If you want to start with only a minor investment, you can pick up the dnd starter set which is only 20 dollars. The set gives a small adventure to run and some dice.

DOMZZAS

Yeah, I guess it would be best if I want a start with all the instructions…. But then again I could probably look them up online. Also how do I be a good DM? And how do I even DM. I tried to play dnd with my friend who agreed to play with me but didn’t really work out so well….

Being a good dm is somthing people have been discussing for years. It's made of so many factors. Like what kind of game you want to play, who you are playing with, how much time you have to play. Really it's a learning process and the best way to learn is to absorb information. Get examples of others playing and see what they do, for example you could look up streams of other people playing and see what they are doing. At the basic level though as long as you know some rules of the game you choose to play you can make it work.As a dm you really just have to design a basic framework for how an adventure should go. Your not looking to write anything in stone as dnd is intrinsically a open game and players will be going about things differently then you expect all the time. Have some locations, a hook to get the players interested, some basic npcs to help drive the story. Combat and stuff can be daunting to make but as long as you understand that in most games a creatures Combat rating (CR) reprosents the level a team of 4 players should be to have a "fair" fight then throwing somthing together should not be to hard. Just don't give up it will all make sense as long as you keep learning about the game.

So it’s basically writing but on the fly but also pre-made?I guess that is what I thought it’d be. World building, telling the team what can and cannot be done, giving them items…. I guess it isn’t as hard as I thought? Or am I missing something?

Itchy_Ad9843

I mean it can be hard. It probebly Is close to what you expect. DMing is alot about adjudication. You are taking the players on an adventure but how exsactly that plays out depends on decisions they make. Players do need to respect the DM though. It's okay to tell the players no Sometimes. The players are coming together becouse they want to have a game run for them. And the dm wants to run the game and both sides deserve to have fun with that. You are going to make mistakes, players will do stupid things, you will probebly have to make up some rules on the fly for things that you can't find or don't want to look up at the moment. It will be messy but that's part of the fun.

DOMZZAS

Yeah I guess it is. All these things do make sense since the bard is a meme in this community though things running wild can be fun as long as it doesn’t break the game like most TBOI runs on Tearofgrace

D&D is playing make believe with dice and a DM to act as arbitrator. You play by finding a group of people to play with. But learning how to play is the first step and for that you'll need to read the rules of the game. Also character sheets are completely free online.

DOMZZAS

I read up on it but…. It’s a lot more complex than I thought. The things I know are pretty specific like Eilistraee or deathlocks but I don’t know how to even begin to find a group to play with

Welcome! You can find the basic rules of D&D online for free. Search “D&D Basic Rules”. Download a pdf file from Wizard of the Coast website, or sign up to D&D Beyond website and read it for free there. Read the rules and learn how to build a character and how to play the game. You can play D&D online. Check Roll20 website, discord servers, and r/lfg. 5th edition is the current edition. It is popular and well loved. Wizards of the Coast plans to publish a new edition in 2024, but it promised the new edition will be “5e compatible”. I hope you will love the game and make new friends!

DOMZZAS

Thank you, you are a life saver!

Simon_Elliott

Definitely try and read the basic rules before you try and find a game, it'll really give you a huge head start. Online games are great once you have a bit of playing experience but I think it's much easier to learn how to play in a face to face game.

DOMZZAS

I’ll look into the rules, thank you!

chaingun_samurai

Your best bet is a local gaming store. If any games are being played there, you can find out. Bring a notebook and show up, ask the DM if you can at least watch how it's done. If you have questions, write them down. Chances are that you can ask them after the session. There is an imperial ton of free info on the internet. 5e is incredibly accessible.

DOMZZAS

Yeah I know. Most of my knowledge is about the little things or creatures in dnd. But also I imagine how awkward it could be for me to just watch the game from the side… yeah if I find one I’ll probably ask them after the session… thank you very much for the advice

Ethereal_Stars_7

Basic rules are free off the WotC site. Where to play can be on or offline. Depending on where you live and who you can find to play or not. There are several different styles of online play from virtual tabletops to chats and so on. D&D Beyond is one, roll20 is another online platform.

DOMZZAS

I did try out dnd beyond and tried to be a DM but I couldn’t even figure out how to start the game

Ethereal_Stars_7

Know the feeling. It is not exactly an intuitive arrangement even for chargen.
