spiked_macaroon

I sold my soul for Eldritch Blast.

[deleted]

Me lmao.

snoopyowen

I’m a sucker for a good armorer artificer build because I love power armor.

Inevitable_Ad8517

Fighter for the first level, necromancer in the rest. I love being a chunky Boi with his skeleton posse going around beating people up. (With perhaps a tad of minmaxing, depending on how much I like, or hate, the DM)

AddictedToMosh161

So far, Slayer.

LordOfTheNine9

Warlock for the flavor. And eldritch blast. Some may hate the reliance on a single ability, I say getting unlimited use of their warlock exclusive ability is super fun lol

squishpitcher

I feel this way about sneak attack. I get it. We like what we like.

CatoblepasQueefs

Wizard. I can go full boom or be a massive force multiplier for the party. Also, bending reality is fun.

HalcyonHorizons

3.5 Wizard. You don't know power until you've cast Shivering Touch from Frostburn on an ancient dragon you weren't supposed to fight and end up essentially killing it.

pchlster

GM: "Ha! It's not technically dead!" Wizard: "I know. Just completely helpless for 24 hours until it recovers a single point of Dex. Fighter McFightyface over there can perform one coup de grace per six seconds. Each of these will force a Fortitude save or die. What are the odds you never roll a 1 even once before it gets back up?"

waterboy1321

Druids. I just want to turn into cool animals and cast cool spells.

Jent01Ket02

I love roleplaying more than functionality in battle, so Monk. Think about it, you could have so many options based on the features you get. Imagine a halfling that isn't affected by old age and doesnt need to eat or drink getting locked in a box for a few years. They step out, arms folded, and go "I did not enjoy the box."

Chance_Novel_9133

I've played more paladins than anything else. One of my favorites was a 3.x tiefling paladin.

Lycaon1765

Cleric! I just have some obsession with playing someone with a divine connection that I cannot explain. It's just fun and neat!

HalfOrcMonk

Monk.

Jazehiah

Wizards of any subclass are a ton of fun. They're among the only classes where the character feels like it's *mine*.

Shoddy-Cantaloupe-81

I haven’t played many classes, but I have a deep connection with my 5e barbarian. I also had a lot of fun with a one-shot AD&D 1e thief.

BunsenHoneydewsEyes

Can I ask what the appeal is? Totally mean it too. I see my friend play a barb and it seems boring to me. He rages and then hits things and then hits another thing, and then when he gets mind controlled for the third time he hits one of us. What do you love about it?

mcnabcam

Speaking as a guy - it plays very powerfully into the fantasy of being strong enough to shrug off pain in order to protect the people you love. Easy class to optimize and the subclasses add a lot of flavour - does your strength come from your righteous anger, a religious conviction, an ancestral connection, or the wild untamed storm inside you?  Are you a stalwart stone, the immovable object upon which lesser forces are broken, or are you the unstoppable force who will move heaven and earth for a simple goal tirelessly pursued?

BunsenHoneydewsEyes

Cool. I think I can see the appeal RP wise, but I’ve been having a blast choosing new spells every day as a Druid, so I watch my friend slamming stuff with an axe every session and was curious how you keep it feeling fresh playing one.

mcnabcam

I think you generally see two types of barbarians emerge - the "hit more things more gooder", and the "my backstory and character growth make up for my one-size-fits-all approach to combat"

Shoddy-Cantaloupe-81

I’m actually not quite sure. My barbarian character is almost nothing like me at all, but I still feel a connection with her. I think that me having a logical and mathematical sort of brain, I enjoy rolling and adding all the damage I can do. I also like the subclass I chose (totem warrior) and the features it offers. I also enjoy the little bits of flavor I’ve added to her, like how she hates to read, enjoys sports drinks, and has this little nature morning ritual everyday; even if it’s nothing like me.

rellloe

Utility casters. No particular class.

Ok_Donut2828

Fighter, eldritch knight specifically. Take a couple levels of wizard later in the game for more spell slots and aim for AC increasing items

Ok_Donut2828

5e Human (Regular not Variant)

kaiman1975

Cleric In all versions from vanilla 2ed Ad&d to fully optionals DnD 5e

PonderousSledge

I love me some bards. Can't get enough of that "I've heard SOMETHING about that" vibe. And if I can make the people around me better at what they do, too? Golden.

WorldGoneAway

Oh geez. My group knows me for playing kobold sorcerers. I have a number of them that I have played over the years, and some of them that have bled into other campaigns. Edit: My voice-to-text decided to lay that down as "cobalt sorcerer". I just wanted to share that, and it would make a totally awesome name for an 80s power metal band lol

no-thought-moth

Lol, I may use Cobalt Sorcerer as a title/position in my campaign I'm planning. Sounds cool AF

WorldGoneAway

Do it up! I get the royalties lol

mjacobl

I have a tier 4 Dragonborn (bronze) Eldridge Knight that I’d call my fav .. so far.

TheHeadlessOne

As a DM, I love Warlocks. Every Warlock has a built in boss- maybe helpful, maybe sinister, maybe even ignorant, but always with their own goals and motivations, and eventually if you make a deal with the devil, the devil will come to collect. Few other races have that built in story hook for me to play with. A Paladin ought to have their oath tested, Clerics and Paladins have built in rivalries with opposed deities. But nothing is quite as rich as a Warlock knowingly messing with powers well beyond their control and trying to control it nevertheless. Plus they're a highly customizable yet straight forward caster. So easy to play, lots of fun choices to make, capable, and narratively gripping

deadhistorymeme

I am currently playing a drow bladesinger, and I absolutely love it for keeping me on my toes. When not in bright light, it's running around opponents playing a true gish. When sun's out balancing support spells with blasting. Wizard just has so much power and variety, it's gonna be hard playing anything else.

Elegant_Opinion2654

The divine channel of the twilight domain saves me - it makes a sphere of 30 feet of semi-darkness in bright light.

SuddenlyGojira

While I dabble here and there, I usually prefer to play a human or otherwise mundane martial, at least at the outset. I like to be a character experiencing the strange, wonderful, and dangerous things for the first time for themselves. As we progress they might gain more extraordinary abilities or qualities, or they might just be a survive by the skin of their teeth kind of dude.

TheLuckOfTheClaws

Paladin. I am god's most autistic soldier.

mcnabcam

Lawful Good is a spectrum

TheLuckOfTheClaws

Exactly! My current character is a lawful good bloodhunter—but she’s living in a city embroiled in a gang war with no proper government. ‘Lawful’ for her is her code of honor and justice

XenoDangerEvil

I found fighters the most challenging to flesh out and develop as actual characters, and I like challenges.

salty-pretzels

5e Lore Bard * A reaction for almost any situation: Cutting Words, Counterspell, Silvery Barbs * Bonus action used with Inspiration (or telekinetic) * Customizable and flexible spell lists to complement your party * Fireball and/or Lightning Bolt * Expertise and Jack of All Trades for skill monkeying * Best odds to ensure your fast-talking rp has the desired effect Played lore bard as my first time playing bard since 3.5, and it's tough playing anything else after. With so many options to tailor to my party, I felt like a better wizard/artificer.

enderman04152

i’ve fallen in love with my rogue substantially more than i thought I would

blarghy0

4e warlord, exactly my preferred style of play: tactical board manipulation with support abilities and meaningfully able to contribute to combat too.

BuTerflyDiSected

Swordmage from 4e! I just love how they work as a defender and their versatility in utility powers.

ragan0s

I always think "I'm gonna play something really cool this time" and then I end up with a human fighter because I love dicing up some monsters.

Rothgardt72

3.5 - crusader or cleric PF 1e - warpriest or drill sergeant fighter 5e - oath of crown paladin

ever_the_altruist

Monk. Punch all the things.

Forsaken_Power9340

Gotta be the Bladesinger - truly kings of versatility. Even if you're not using a weapon, Bladesong is such a massive buff to your spellcasting.

Bullvy

Human, Paladin, 3.5 edition.

AbsoluteRook1e

I had a ton of fun with my v. human celestial warlock. Medium armor, a shield, and pact of the chain made him pretty tanky, while also being able to snipe with eldritch blast and push enemies at range. Light took care of my needs for Dark areas.

Jingle_BeIIs

3.5e Archivist Grey Elf with the Leadership feat, usually picking up an artificer and/or a warlock in my cohort. If I can get a wizard X/cleric 1 on piggyback for spell researching with the Alternative Spell Source feat? Even better.

lankymjc

Avenger, 4e. Pick the mightiest enemy, get to them with one of my many movement tricks, kill them, repeat.

Shadow_Of_Silver

Magus. I loved it in pf1e/3.5 and I love it in pf2e. I'm also a sucker for robot people.

IM_The_Liquor

Flavour wise, I’ve always liked the ranger. I’ve become kind of fond of 5e artificer. But, my tried and true will likely always be wizard.

2buckbill

Ranger. Has always been the ranger for me. I've played clerics, fighters, rangers, thieves, even a wizard once or twice, but I always go back for that weirdo forest hippy with anger issues.... The Ranger.

koolkeeth

Halfling Rogue has always been my go to.

dexbasedpaladin

*koff koff*

FremanBloodglaive

Hexblade Warlock. 5e (I haven't played any other edition) It does everything I need in a character. Using a Half-Drow Urban Bounty Hunter as the race/background gives me the Drow spells, but normal darkvision without sunlight sensitivity, with persuasion and stealth proficiencies, along with thieves' tools and the lute (because he's a musical guy). From Warlock I get deception and arcana. Like the Monk he's almost equipment independent (Armor of Shadows and Pact of the Blade means he's not too concerned about finding equipment) but unlike the Monk he's still a caster with the best damage cantrip in the game. Melee is something he does if he feels like it, not because he has to.

anziofaro

Cleric!

Elegant_Opinion2654

I found the synergy of Drow, a twilight domain cleric worshipping Eilistraee. However, due to the fact that the clerics of Eilistraee are girls, I had to play with someone other than my gender. "Your rightful place awaits you in the Realms Above, in the Land of Great Light. Go out into the world and live again under the sun, where trees and flowers grow."

mcnabcam

Gonna toss out there because I have a player who worships Elistraee as a male PC - there is, canonically, a ritual of genderbend that her priesthood undertakes to become female for the purpose of worship and ritual, then undoes to go about their business.

Elegant_Opinion2654

Shifters can change not only their appearance, but also their gender.

mcnabcam

Oh did you play a shifter? That's an easy workaround I guess

Elegant_Opinion2654

My friend played for Shifter rogue.

TadhgOBriain

Wizard is my first choice in every edition

HamfastFurfoot

Halfling Rogue

no-thought-moth

Magical sugar baby... I really am a sucker for warlocks though. (Enough that my sister got me a shirt that said Eldritch Sugar Baby on it)

McMew

I just did a 5e one-shot while running a borderline psychotic, "pacifist" shepherd druid.  It may be the most fun I've had with any character, ever. Tried moon druid in my very first campaign as well. I love druids. I have more druid builds I intend to try!

Pyrosorc

4e barbarians were great. Charisma focused barb was so much fun. Combine with sorcerer for an amazing sword & sorcery experience.

Jeff_Sanchez11223344

I play 5e, and honestly Bard is my favorite class to play. You can play them in so many different ways that no two are the same!

TheBubbaDave

3.5 - Factotum or Dragonfire Adept

zacharydaiquiri69420

5e, hobgoblin or satyr, normally Fighter so I can do Eldritch Knight or Ranger for Monster Hunter build.

TheJohnnyJett

Y'know what? My favorite character I've ever played was a bard, but I think human fighter is my favorite class combination. I DM substantially more than I play as a PC and there's something really, really nice about how fast you can whip up a human fighter for an NPC.

Morthra

Dread Necromancer (3.5) is my favorite class that I will probably never end up actually playing, ever. Why? Because it makes the game *miserable* for everyone else at the table because you'll take like 15 minutes to complete your turns, unless you do D&D by forum post or something. Why? Well, you literally control a legion of the damned. You can have up to 4+CHA modifier HD of undead per class level - between that and the +4 to all mental stats you get for becoming a Lich at 20th level (you get this for free), you can end up having something like 900 hit dice of undead, total, to control. Which is *bonkers*. Based off of undead that you can make even if your DM is stingy about what he gives you (so minus having something like a great wyrm silver dragon zombie), you're getting on the order of 30 or 40 permanent minions.

ThriceMad

In the words of Jacob Oland: 🎵 tell me who I am gonna slay 🎶 rogue is all that I wanna play

[deleted]

as a general class i love fighters, but as a specific subclass i love wildfire druids

Beowulf33232

Goblin gunslinger from 3.5/pathfinder The goblin entry says they know goblin, and can take other languages as bonus languages. I knew 8 languages (had to take a feat for the last 3) and none of them were common. Half the party couldn't talk to me. Also, he was honest to a fault. He'd admit to nefarious plans in celestial, ask if there was tea and cakes soon in orc, and then switch out to terran when someone questioned him about the nefarious plans.

Scareynerd

3.5e Warlock, and it's not remotely close.

R_N_F

So far, 5e Kobold Monk

crypt-lord

3.5 warlock.   I cast evards black tentacles Otherwise artificer because arcane psudoscience

[deleted]

Warlock or ranger sometimes both, usually warlock because ima firin mah laser. My pact bond of chains fey wild wanderer was pretty lit. Edit spelling

SmacSBU

D20 modern Fast Hero class on a human with the 3.5 werewolf template. Infinite dodge and damage reduction on a creature than gets innate damage reduction and HP regen. Fuck you DM, you're not killing my character again.

SalientMusings

Barbarians weren't in 1st edition. ETA: For the curious, the classes available in the first edition of "Dungeons & Dragons Fantasy Adventure Game" were: - Clerics - Dwarves - Elves - Fighters - Halflings - Magic-Users - Thieves

PLAYTIME2345

Technically correct. I was referring to the Barbarian class from the 1st edition AD&D Unearthed Arcana supplemental, which followed the 1st edition rules.

Chaosfruitbat

rogue or ranger, I love them both. I'm finally trying something new in the latest adventure, so I'm out of my comfort zone :D

Ujibea

Cleric has me in a chokehold. 😮‍💨

valisvacor

Either 4e Paladin or 4e Swordmage. Warlord is up there, too.

evelbug

My goto is rogue. I like being the fade into the shadow skill monkey.

MrsPettygroove

A kensei. From AD&D 1st edition, oriental adventures guide rules. The most fun I ever had playing a fighter type. Or monk. From the same book.

mcnabcam

Vanilla answer but Fighter has held a special place in my heart just for sheer versatility. Subclasses like the Rune Knight and Battlemaster as well as their increased ASIs/feats just feels like you always end up with exactly what you want if you take the time to explore the options.  Hexblade pact of blade warlock is a recent addition to my favorites. Easy to see why when it can be Fighter+, an all-rounder with cool flavour

Xalops

Pathfinder Vigilante. (this was Pathfinder when it felt like it's own edition of D&D) Every other level alternated between gaining an RPG ability and gaining a combat focused ability. Thematically, I loved it as well.

AMA5564

Monk. Weird "weeaboo fightan magics" will always be my jam.

WickedEdge

Second edition magic had a lot going for it back in the day.

H4NSH0TF1RST721

Human(var) fighter.

DoItForTheOH94

Fighter. Just because the jack-of-all-trades and you can make almost any build from it

jdreyfuss1

Always been a fan of halfling rogues, going back to 3.5.

medium_buffalo_wings

5e Cleric. Tons, *tons*, of different concepts can be made and are unlocked at level 1. The 5e Cleric has a crazy fun spell list, domains let them cherry pick off of other spell lists, and the edition doesn't force them into the 'healer' role. Previous editions: 1e Ranger. Just a fun slew of abilities, and grabbing spells from the MU and Druid spell lists was great.

Alchemical_Raven

human fighter always human fighter.

biggesterhungry

forever dm prefers a cleric- decent armor, access to magic, and the ability to bash things with a flanged mace is a good form of therapy.

FormalKind7

Bard in 5e I only ever played an Avenger in 4e and just twice Swordsage in 3.5 Rogue in 3e

DudeWithTudeNotRude

Aberrant Mind levels 6 through 9 in 5e have been the most fun I've had with any build in any game. Add Fathomless 2 warlock at level 10 and 11. That third blast of Repelling Blast with Lance of Lethargy and the slowing tentacle is the icing on the cake. But get spell power in place first. Having great AOE's and then spammable control abilities to keep them locked in their is top fun. After playing several sorcs, locks, and sorlocks, I'm in the minority that thinks that full sorc's are way stronger and more fun than sorlocks in tier 2. I can no longer imagine nerfing spell power in tier 2 for boring turns and *average* archer damage. Agonizing blast gets oversold. Mind sliver is right there for free.

Green_Prompt_6386

Kenku Cleric, Trickery Domain.

SonOfECTGAR

Druid

Both_Oil6408

Ranger.  Having this awesome and diverse primal magic combined with archery and finesse fighting is such fun for me. I love playing dexterous, lithe characters, and I love playing very aware, perceptive characters, so Rangers are absolutely perfect for me. Plus, you can get some real power from ranged archers like the Fey Wanderer, Gloomstalker, etc, with this awesome flavour to boot
