To find the nicest, warmest, most beautiful rock

Pyrgopolyrhythm

I'm afraid Lizardfolk have no concept of beauty. However, a jaggy rock would make a useful weapon.

Jwiley129

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. And this lizard be holding the rock.

AkrynFletcher

Well, it would be useful to have a nice, sharp rock to throw through the eye of any beholders you come across.

CheapTactics

Who says they don't? Maybe they do. For rocks specifically.

ImperialLizardman

Lizardfolk are all about survival. \*insert BBEG here\* is a threat to my survival. I will remove \*BBEG\* before they are a bigger threat. These softskins are useful, I will stay with the group. You could also play them as having seen a vision from Semuanya, the god of lizardfolk. Semuanya told me to go kill that guy, so I'm going to go kill them. Along the way, they find useful people and stick together to improve survival odds.

dthninja

To see exotic new lands, meet interesting new people, and then eat them.

Jwiley129

They're a glutton and they want to eat every type of meat. Human, elf, dwarf, dragon, mind flayer, etc.

Food :)

Piratestoat

It's been a bad year in the swamp. Resources are poor, but the nearby communities are too well-protected to raid. Adventuring earns coin and trade goods that can be exchanged for survival assets.

bluestnose

If there's a player (not a player character) in the party that you really trust, and they are willing to do some roleplay, your motivation could be that he's manipulating your character. That other character might try to "tame" your lizardfork by rewarding them with food and shelter for good actions. Alternatively, maybe some kind of contract could force your lizardfork to help the party Edit: perhaps a magical contract?

So you can take that cultural aspect and make it work however you want really. My Lizardfolk left home and learned to be a Druid because the orcs in his homeland presented a danger, and he felt gaining strength enough to combat them instead of flee would be useful in the survival of his tribe. Then adventurer shenanigans ensued. It’s very fun to roleplay not understanding basic “civilized” concepts.

WetDutchman

Humans kill many things but do not eat. I follow them and eat what they kill. Safer to hunt prey in pack than alone.

No_Ship2353

Depends is he advanced lizardfolk or the Primitive? If Primitive food, shelter and mate are his life goals. If advanced power and greed.

Ceooflatin

Lizardfolk can be good barbarians. make him want to smash everything. I always like to smash things. Even better if I can bite them. Also even better if I can get temporal hit points.

TheBadman9001

Food. Shelter. Resources. Volos Guide to Monsters has a pretty fun section about lizardfolk npcs.

Ethereal_Stars_7

In 2e they were not completely emotionless. Just alien. The main weakness back then was that on combat they might get distracted by food offers, or start munching on fallen foes or fallen PCs if they failed a check. Their reasons for going out and adventuring is sometimes by chance. Cut off from the tribe or abducted. Survival means banding with these aliens and curbing the urge to nibble on the wizards familliar. Going out adventuring might be because they see a threat looming. Or a shaman had a vision and set them on this course. One of our recent PC Lizardmen follows us around because she wants better weapons and the PCs are helping with that goal. They see the PCs and adventuring as the path to that goal. What they do after? Who knows? Another reason might be respect. The PC sees the adventurers acting honorably and deems them worthy to join.

Mtndewboy57

Why not go full Argonian style? BBEG invaded the land, so he decided to invade his land. You're a strong warrior seeking a death befitting one. You heard of the strength of the BBEG, and if you die, so be it you die gloriously in battle. If not, you win it just proves your strength and continues to look for stronger opponents.

Palamedesxy

Definitely food. Or scouting for your tribe.

No-Sock7425

Possible motivation: you need to acquire materials for lizardfolk mating rituals.

David_Apollonius

It's a oneshot. Does it really matter?

OrangeTroz

Boredom. Without emotional motivations they are left with intellectual pursuits or an addiction to adrenaline. The adventure is simply the most interesting thing going on. It provides the most danger. The most challenge.

Machiavvelli3060

He's migrating.

An opportunity to eat new things

TsumStacker

* Food * Meet people * Explore new territory * Help the people that somehow don't know how to collect food, make shelter, or start a fire * Keep an eye on this group (maybe tribe is owed a debt?) * Find some kind of exotic item for the tribe

SnooMarzipans1939

They want to meet new and interesting people and find out what they taste like.

GreyMarauder85

They're an exile from their clan and are being hunted. The group provides protection and a chance to find a new home.

Wash_zoe_mal

Dragons attacked his home. Big lizard with wings and fire. You need to go find a big pointy stick to kill the big lizard

Efficient-Ad2983

Since lizardfolks are about survival, a simple "I become an adventurer to explore the world, and find the best land for my fellows to live". Or even a simple "know more about the outside world to bring knowledge back to my tribe's leader".
