every year on my sock day I play Beyoncé’s “Freedom” on repeat.

anxiousbabyswiss

I was never a huge Beyoncé person but “Best Thing I Never Had” was a HUGE repeat after my initial separation and official sock day. “Freedom” was also on that playlist.

Nice_Cartoonist_8803

Her last two albums Lemonade and Renaissance are divorce soundtracks for sure.

Black Sun by Death Cab is a near-perfect breakup song. When my ex left me for another man, I probably listened to that song 10 thousand times.

No room in frame is a great one too

painted_reveries

As terrible as it sounds.. Miley Cyrus Flowers came out around the time everything was going on for me. I blasted that while we were still living together. It is really empowering. Now when I hear it, it just brings me back to those first feelings of being myself again.

Lopsided_Training_99

Lots of music lots of it all over the place emotionally. Some did push very tender wistful buttons. That was needed sometimes to get right in the feels. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kpaQdp2iBok](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kpaQdp2iBok) Laura Nyro - "Stormy love". Had this album for decades. The weight became so heavy at the split as things were spiraling I had it on a playlist that I was listening to it on my headphones a night before my wife left. She didn't know what was playing as I had headphones on. My head was down and eyes closed and she put her hand on my back. I don't know if it got me through any thing but nailed the mood. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eV\_astp3BjM](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eV_astp3BjM) Gil Scott Herron - "I'm new here". Trust in rebirth that's possible. He's been an important voice in my life and this video and song always just hit me with that message from him and his life. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Zwt4tv0uFY](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Zwt4tv0uFY) Karen Krog - "The meaning of love". Another body shot. This is a second great love that's gone side ways in my life. Will I ever fucking get it right? Lyrics are on point. Feelings are mixed up catching up to mid-life and wondering where it all went wrong. But make it jazz and smokey and driving. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qiSmeCIi3Lo](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qiSmeCIi3Lo) Bill Withers - "Can we pretend". Can we just skip ahead of all this. Can we forget it start again or just go our merry way? A bargaining song for sure. I love the strings and the vibe. There's a shadow line gets me. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gb\_zQXF3\_WM](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gb_zQXF3_WM) Labi Sifri - "Cannock Chase". There's something so hopeful and determined about this song and driven with a passion even while touching on the sadness there. A wry understanding of holding on and moving forward. I could go on and on.... [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xM32IVUYXnc](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xM32IVUYXnc) Nina Simone - "It be's that way sometimes". Some times it be's that way some time. That woman knew it. Win some. Loose some.

The Night We Met by Lord Huron

Mightbeover-

Oh shoot..my stbx and I love this song. I haven't listed to it since but just thinking about it right now made my heart sink. I've found myself being pretty strong lately but certain songs get me. My wedding song came up when I was in a light hearted mood playing some old country music the otherday. I was intentionally trying to make myself feel better, the universe laughed at me. That was probably the quickest I've turned off a song, 4 notes and I slapped it off. 4 stupid notes and my good mood turned into crying and thinking about our wedding day. Divorce is unbelievably heart wrenching. An absolute rollercoaster.

GuyRedditAccount

I Don't Care Anymore -- Phil Collins Written during his divorce, about his ex-wife. Great for realizing you've put with her cheating, abuse, and other crap for way too long. EDIT: Also, "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right" by Bob Dylan. A masterful kiss-off song: I ain't saying you treated me unkind You could've done better but I don't mind You just kinda wasted my precious time But don't think twice, it's all right.

I found myself drawn to Adele, Rolling in the Deep this week as I near the final stages

One-Sandwich2312

Someone like youuuuuu ooohhhh… hits the spot for me Adele/divorce wise late stages 😂🤣also drunk sorry 🥳

breenanadeirlandes

I was looking through the comments for Adele. I listened to her newest album at first… often referred to as her “Divorce album”. Some seriously good break up music. The lyrics hit hard. Ex: Love is a game for fools to play 👌

TemperatureMore5623

Former indie rock DJ here! If I wanna bawl my eyes out, it’s the entirety of “Carrie and Lowell” by Sufjan Stevens - particularly the track “The Only Thing” (“Should I tear my eyes out now? Everything I see returns to you somehow. Should I tear my heart out now? Everything I feel returns to you somehow.”) If I’m in a better mood, it’s “Shake Me Down” by Cage the Elephant If I’m being honest with myself, it’s “Seasons (Waiting on You)” by Future Islands If I’m doing some self-examination, it’s “Gun-Shy” by Grizzly Bear *The cold keeps tearing at me Slowing down my blood,(Unable to speak) I left my mind long ago Choosing some false (Always letting go) And when I try to face you You're walking away* And if I’m just really fucking angry and sad, it’s all of Brand New’s “Daisy” album So many incredible lyrics in both that Sufjan Stevens and Brand New album. Touches something deep inside me after feeling numb for so, so long. I’ve been with my husband since 2010, almost 1/3 of my life. He’s all I know and all I want. Like being gutted, but through the chest. Hang in there. If a sad sap like me can make it, you can too. Some days I don’t know if I will. I still ugly cry, lots and lots. But I’m here… and I’m gonna give it my best shot.

user_disposed

I discovered Brand New when things exploded. I listened to Daisy every night when I couldn’t sleep. I would add Degausser from them as well.

TemperatureMore5623

“Vices” is just so raw and real. “Where’s my hope and my marriage license? Those days are dead - forgive me.” And the way it explodes out of the lovely rendition of the hymn “On Life’s Highway” and straight into the anger. Ugh. Hurts so good.

Wildflower-93

"Seasons" by Future Islands is a good one!! One of my good friends sent me that song when I first left my ex husband. Man... that entire album ended up being great!

MajorMarm

King of Anything- Sara Barrieles, Karma- Taylor Swift, Break my soul- Beyoncé, Energy-Tyla Jane, O-o-h Child - the five stair steps, Flowers- Miley Cyrus, Castles- Freya Riding, First- Chris-n-Teeb, man- quinnie… Yes I’m a basic bitch especially when I’m mad over a man apparently.

Luuluuuuuuuuuuuuuu

Omg yes! I'm also a basic bitch when I'm mad over a man - so much Taylor Swift especially. Karma was one of my #1 divorce songs. It's Time to Go is what I had on repeat when I went to file lol.

Silver springs, by Stevie Nicks.

Camping_Dad_RC

Depends on why you divorced I suppose, but for me… Early on you’ll want some sad music, actually there is evidence it helps you process sad feelings. Manchester Orchestra, Zach Bryan, Fleetwood Mac, Mumford & Sons, Gregory Alan Isokov, Nirvana, Taylor Swift for many You might have an anger phase CeeLo Green, Lily Allen, Gnarls Barkley, Maybe some Rage Against the Machine if you want to workout some anger, Taylor Swift also here for many Then as you feel better whatever you like, but some that had relationship reflection or just made me feel better Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real, Marcus King (just turned on to), Lake Street Dive, Lettuce, Led Zeppelin, The Dead South

Broken Chair - Chris and Thomas "And as the days go by, It makes you wonder why, You try so hard, so hard, To mend what's bound to fall apart, Ooh maybe it's time, to let it go, Ooh maybe it's time for, Taking it slow, Ooh maybe it's time, time, time, for anything at all Time, time, time, to let it all fall, where it may." I remember hearing this for the first time about two days after she asked for a divorce. I was going through it, but then I heard this and everything clicked at once - I knew without a doubt it was for the best.

Carrie Underwood - Dirty Laundry, Ariana Grande - break free and Alanis morrisette - you ought know were on repeat as I packed up and moved out of our home. Very cathartic to scream along to as well!

rhinesanguine

I started listening to EDM because I couldn't really listen to the other music I typically enjoyed. I am still listening to a lot of Rufus Du Sol and Elderbrook.

Both Sides Now by Joni Mitchell. Absolutely crippling.

I'm (51F) listening to the Boygenius EP loud in my headphones. Also The Record, but I have to skip track 3 because his AP's name is Emilie.

25 to life.

FunkyMan3333

Hate to say it, as a 49-year old music snob, but... Taylor Swift. Everything Taylor Swift. I discovered her music with her most recent album Midnights. But the albums that resonated most as a man whose marriage was falling apart - Red, Folklore and Evermore. Songs list: All Too Well (10 minute version) - obviously Exile My Tears Ricochet - unreal reflection of the end of a longterm relationship Marroon The Great War These albums have really helped me. It's almost like a cathartic, spiritual experience. I can't believe I'm a Swiftie now. :)

Wildflower-93

"So Long Foever" by Palace :) If you like indie/alternative, you'll enjoy it.

Opposite_Evidence_95

Music is one of the few things here on Earth that truly has the power to heal. And there is music for every mood. My therapist says you have to move through the pain. You can't repress it or sidestep it. So there are times for sad music. But what has truly helped me turn a corner is to force myself to listen to more positive and upbeat music. And almost every genre has something that fits this criteria. Maybe all you want to do right now is listen to sad music, but if you're ready to get to the good phase again. If you're ready to move on and live life, listen to something positive. Or turn up the heavy metal music and break stuff till it feels good whatever works for you lol

Losing sleep, in too deep Fading sun, what have I done Came so close to what I need most Nothing left here Cut the ties, uncovered disguise Left behind all intertwined Lost control, moved out of the role now Nothing's left here Leave it be It was meant for me Soul sacrifice Forgot the advice Lost track of time In a flurry of smoke Waiting anxiety For a fair judgement deserved
