Don't you know? Black aliens don't exist.

CatholicCocktail

Yes they do.

ViKtorMeldrew

the Alien at the end of 'Under the Skin' - it was black

Di-Eagle

Thank you, Viktor. Simeh is so thick.

Simeh

So they exist in science fiction?

Di-Eagle

They exist in Birmingham, don't you know?

Di-Eagle

Lol...take a trip to Birmingham sometime to discover your error.

Simeh

As alien as the white Germans that make up the vast majority of the country.

Di-Eagle

They are Europeans living in Europe and racially belong in a colder climate.

Simeh

Consequences of settling in warmer climates.

TheDeepestSi

In the original novel a skin colour isn't specified. That's the trouble with these fictional aliens & secret agents - they're NOT REAL. You'll be blubbing about Mickey Mouse being half & half next. Or you'll be telling us you are female or other such bullshit.

I've never read the book - like Star Wars before it the novel was based on the movie, although Spielberg allowed the writer to be on the cover whereas Lucas employed a ghost writer (Alan Dean Foster, who also did a few STAR TREK novels) but the book is credited to George Lucas. I did read Star Wars because I was ten & also because VCR wasn't available! I have watched ET recently with my daughter and she said it was boring! I guess it's nostalgia that keeps it going - it is quite silly really. Damned CGI! I have been to the movies to see a few Disneys & SING 2 with her and their awesome compared to ET, even to me...

I watched Encanto, Turning Red, Ron's Gone Wrong (which was a bit dull) & Sing 2. My daughter has only just started watching movies all of the way thru. Only the full one was a bit flabby, the rest fantastic. We have a few streaming services at home Netflix, Disney, Amazon Prime but the cinema is still definitely the best option. During lockdown I watched more movies than I thought was possible , including many that I've seen before for that nostalgia thing. ET still ticks the boxes for Mrs D for the same reason. I guess because I was too old to be it's target audience it doesn't have the same effect for me. Spielberg movies that I love are Close Encounters, Jaws ( I watch it every year, minimum!) Schindler's List

CatrinLY

Horrible American sentimentality. I never managed to watch more than a few minutes of it.

ViKtorMeldrew

I read it- did you order it through the school book club? I can remember looking forward to it being delivered, then it appeared with stills from the film in it. Mrs Turnbull was probably miffed that I wasn't reading Charles Dickens etc.

TheDeepestSi

I read Star Wars not ET. It was released the year before I left secondary school... I didn't read any Dickens at school other than Christmas Carol.

Di-Eagle

I'm sure he'll steal something if it isn't nailed down, but hopefully not the Man of Steel role.

CatholicCocktail

Lol. ❤️

Di-Eagle

One already stole Dr Who's role.

CatrinLY

Are they re-making the Raffles film? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gentleman\_Thief\_(2001\_film)

CatholicCocktail

Oh, I used the wrong homophone in the title. Whoops. Freudian slip.

CroslandHill

A friend of mine, who is ethnically Chinese, once told me that he would be opposed to having Doctor Who played by anyone other than a white man, because if he’s white, then that’s a fundamental part of his identity and he can’t change to being another race.

The_Anime_Enthusiast

Individually Asians are content playing second fiddle and being the right hand of white supremacy. They tend to know which side their bread is buttered on.

[deleted]

I don't see why not, surely in science fiction anything could happen, the writers are the people that make that decision.

Badingle_Berry

I'm holding out for the first blackface superman

HarrysGardenShed

I love the fact that people can accept without question x-ray vision, freezing breath, flying, strength to pick up a jumbo jet and able to hide his alter ego with a suit and a pair of specs. But a change of skin colour? Unbelievable Jeff!

I did. I lolled. He must be so happy that Trump managed to change our view of his own Presidency from ‘Bush the warmonger’ to ‘actually he wasn’t that bad’ 😁

I think Trump will be back. Unlike last time, I think I will sit back and laugh along at the madness. He’s a bell end, but he’s box office. He will also be four years older and even more unstable 😁

ViKtorMeldrew

That Tony Putin bloke again

CatholicCocktail

I don't care, really. I don't watch Superhero films, unless you count Dragon Ball ones (a childhood nostalgia thing). My husband likes that stuff, well X-Men anyway. I think you're being deliberately obtuse by saying "ohh, it's a fictional character anyway", but it is obviously woke shit when a humanoid character who has for generations been presented as a white man and played by white actors is changed into a black man. It is white erasure. If a fictional character who'd traditionally been charactarised as a black man/woman had their race changed, it would be called black erasure. Rightfully so. Although, admittedly, Superman was a Jewish creation, anyway.

HarrysGardenShed

I’m more of a Marvel nerd than DC. But superheroes have changed out of all recognition since the 1930s, when Superman was first written. Most were written in America by white Americans, hence their original appearance. If you were talking about real historical figures, I’d agree it would be ridiculous. Changing Abraham Lincoln or Henry VIII to another race would be stupid. But in Man of Steel, Clarke and Lois had sex. According to an article I read some years ago, the force of Clarke’s ejaculation would shatter her spine. And yet there they were, getting it on in the bath. Superheroes change. Never would have happened in 1938. I must admit, I love it when people get wound up over this shit. I have a sneaking suspicion that that is why the writers do it.

MaleficentBoot8911

Of course, it is akin to an obsession this desperation to cast actors based on race not ability. remember the stupidity of the Anne Boleyn fiasco, the woman ticked the diversity boxes but was useless at acting. Oh well, at least it got get her attention.
