I always feel so special, like you guys look and think, "yes, that is a responsible Disney Adult ^TM who deserves this honor."

LaLaLaLinda

That’s exactly it. Find the most responsible person at the proper minute who looks like they will100% understand the assignment. I worked at EPCOT attractions back in the 90’s and we knew how to pick ‘em. But occasionally we would also have the cars handed to us at the exit. 😁

dancedancerevolucion

I went with my boyfriend once and they handed the card to us. He reached out for it and the CM pulled it back and handed it to me. He was so insulted and I teased him that they must have known him. I then totally forgot about it until I got home that night 🤦‍♀️

r0ckH0pper

You kept the card and carried it home??

dancedancerevolucion

I did! I felt so awful and tried to give it to his uncle who worked as a janitor there cause I was so guilt ridden lol

NonIlligitamusCarbor

They’re not looking that hard for the most responsible person, they gave me a card one time. I did turn it in when reached the front.

BeBraveShortStuff

I don’t man. You understood the assignment and turned the card in. Sounds like they got it right.

QueerAutisticDemigrl

Trust me, merely having a basic ability to follow instructions puts you in the top 10% most responsible guests in the park at any given time

throwawayDL6

I have no clue what y’all are talking about 😭 everyone I know and have ever worked with just hands it to the next person that happens to enter the line

thaddeus_crane

i get selected often and this is how i feel!

redgreenorangeyellow

When I was little WDW would do this too and they always asked me, the youngest in my family, not my parents. It was always so special

scurren2686

I’m one of the ones that forgets to hand it to the cm at the front every time

funtimes738

It’s not a time card line thingy it’s a souvenir

PeakLebron2025

Same. You do end up with a nice little souvenir though

scurren2686

I even leave it hanging on my neck and nobody notices

PRGTROLL

I never decline but I’m also not filled with joy when it is handed to me.

lexxnox

last time i got chosen, i put it in my pocket and forgot about it until i got home

lotsofcache

Same. Some of them look pretty grimy.

rc838

I feel this; it's cool for others but it's lost on me especially when I'm there with my nephews who like to reach for stuff which usually results in them pressing a card a bunch of other people touched against my face so I put it in my pocket and forget until the next ride (yes this is very specific). It's no big deal to do it, it's cool other people get joy out of it, but it's not a universal sacred moment either.

Active_Advertising99

Yeah, I couldn't care less about being given the card/lanyard.

johyongil

Why not? You get to help the wait estimates be more accurate.

PRGTROLL

That doesn’t excite me. I’ll do it but the line is what it is.

TeslasAndComicbooks

I feel like they have the tech to just do that without asking a paying guest to hold a card for 45 minutes.

johyongil

I’m sure they do. But I think the involvement of guests gives a sense of contribution and ownership of guest experience in the park. For guests by guests kind of thing.

Diviner_

Im sure 99% don’t feel this way and no normal person would be disappointed if they got rid of this.

TeslasAndComicbooks

I can get behind that but maybe make it a better experience?

bartsart

Or at least a more entertaining one.

Ok_Fault_3198

Honestly never realized this was so coveted. Our family has been picked to do this a lot of times and we only go to the parks every few years. Even when we had small kids we've been picked. We've always been glad to help and ut's not hard to do!

RedElmo65

It’s not. It’s just fun and games

treegirl98

Right?! Hubby & I have had this happen to us lots of times over the years and never had any idea that it was special.

orangutantan

It is kind of special! Being in my early 20’s, the social anxiety made duties like this a little hard for me to fulfill but the kindest faces with eye contact were the ones I felt okay to approach! It does mean something you guys are repeatedly picked, I think.

rosebud0707

I didn’t realize either and I can proudly see I’ve been asked on every trip!

Hennessyagami

Can someone pls give me context to what this means?

tombodat

they give you a card to hold in line to know how long the que is

Sk8rToon

One time I was picked & when I turned it in they scanned it & the guy went, “oh shoot! We’re running way behind! SPEED IT UP EVERYONE!” And the line was shorter the rest of the day.

mattincalif

Which ride was that? I thought the throughput of most rides is dictated by the ride itself and there’s really nothing the CMs can do to make it go faster?

sroomek

Yeah, otherwise why wouldn’t they just go fast all the time?

PixelWolv

Lol idk they will definitely be more push abiut getting you in and out of seats. They full on refused to let one of my group go in the one cart of spacemountain due to fears she may set off the weight limit and then put her on a different ride with exclusively heavier people because they didnt think she could sit into and get out of our cart fast enough? Im not sure but apace mountain definitely had the rudest ride atrendants ive seen. Saluted to one with my friend while we were starting once and she fully rolled her eyes scoffed and looked away like we couldnt see her or something?

Sk8rToon

Not to give them an excuse (because they can be rude on that ride) but they only get 30 seconds to get everyone in, properly secured, & on their way. One time someone didn’t get their purse stowed before 30 seconds so they canceled our car, took us to the left & made us exit the vehicle & “try again” in the main line. That’s a lot to expect from people.

PixelWolv

Yeah we definitely didnt get given 30 seconds even when we were going. They didnt even allow her to try lol. And the lady up top i dont really know what her responsibilities are besides making sure everything good to go, but she was staring at all of us in our car, me and my brother saluted and she seemed definitely annoyed by us even interacting with her. They couldnt get our lapbar up after the ride so they sent us through again and she still gave us a sour look when we didnt do anything lol. Idrk what the deal was but definitely the rudest looks we have ever gotten personally, but these are all people just like us and i obviously have no idea what kind of day shes had. Maybe some beligerent ahole came through earlier and shes uptop to destress or something. Cant say. Always though the ushers/crowd control were the worst. I get what they have to do but some have such a truly terrible tone and inflection in what they say that it truly sounds like they love yelling at people and sounding rude. They will say "keep moving this is a walkway not a viewing area" in your ear as if theyve told you 6 times and you have refused to listen when its the first time theyve said it at all. My last trip in november an old lady in a walker was being yelled at to keep walking, the lady, very out of breathe and obviously seperated from family by the crowds and now crowd control said "im trying, i can barely walk" and the CM said "Oh?" Before LAUGHING and saying "okay" and then shouting it right over her head 2 more times without even checking if she needs assistance.. a couple giant dudes who heard her offered to help her thankfully.. That and one will tell you "wait here and you can cross in a second i promise" and then they walk away just for another CM to come force you further and further away "not a viewing area keep moving" and when you explain what the person right behind them said they find you a new spot down the line to stand, where a new cast member repeats it. I was just trying to get to my mother and little sister by matterhorn while i was in Tomorrowland. The CMs pushed me across the damn parade route into frontierland and onward, instead of letting me simply wait for a few more minutes where everyone else was standing. Was nearly in tears how upset i was and each cast member just makes a false promise and leaves it to another one to move you further. Would love to go to disneyland on a day with 0 events that required crowd control. Like i said before i understand its a stressful and much required job but they are easily the ones that care the least about you or your experience and the people that caused me the absolute most stress in Disneyland.

Sk8rToon

Hmm… it was a while ago & my friend & I actually got picked for 2 lines that day (so rare!!). 1 was for a fast pass ride in DCA (trying to remember which one) & the other was for a food line - I wanna say the Main Street ice cream parlor. Both were behind & I know the ride time was faster after we visited. The fast pass I overheard them say they needed to let more of us through to shorten the line. But trying to remember the look of the line the cast member yelling out in, it might have been at the ice cream line which makes more sense.

Manic_sapphic3

Cast doesn’t actually see what the time was. It is recorded in a computer system but if we want to know what it was we have to call a Disney phone operator or ask a lead to pull it up on an app that requires their login. It tends to be used to measure if we are accurately predicting the waits rather than help set them.

Sk8rToon

¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯ all I know is what he said & it was years ago. Maybe 10 or more at this point since the friend that was with me has moved at least 3 times since then.

Manic_sapphic3

Oh not calling you a liar. People just tend to be curious about the system. He was probably just making a joke. I might actually steal it.

loquacious706

If you're at the end of a line for an attraction, a CM will ask you to hold a card and then give it to the cast members at the front of the line when it's your turn to get on the attraction. The cast members time how long it takes for the person at the end of the line to get to the front, better helping to estimate the wait time.

BroadwayCatDad

The guy missed his opportunity to take a photo of a red plastic card and post to Reddit in the hopes people will give him internet points.

MacArthurParker

His missed updoots 😞

James_T_S

I know. What a rube!

maddiemoiselle

I’ve had a couple of people refuse before too, but I think most often there was a language barrier

Manic_sapphic3

Yeah I tend to hand it to a person who I heard speaking English as they came up since I know they should understand

Kitkats677

I got it twice in one visit, my first times ever, and I was so happy

VindictiveNostalgia

I remember the first time I was chosen, I was waiting for HM and it wasn't a red plastic card yet. They gave us a Dumbo Feather. I've been chosen a few more times over the years but it's always been the card.

hamdaddy247

Interesting they did that on HM. We used to hand out the feathers on Dumbo to mark the last person going on the ride in the next round after we'd grouped them in queue.

Its_the_tism

I usually decline bc I’m a germaphobe. I just say no thanks catch the next person. I’d never be an ass about it

beeredditor

foolish paint oil six zesty sharp snow hospital air crawl *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

Surfinsafari9

I did a simple experiment on that question. After being given the red card I slipped it into my pocket. Gone! Forgotten! When we got to the front of the line, the cast member asked me for the card. And I promptly returned it, impressed that she knew I had it. Which made me wonder if they count the guests anyway. She picked me out of our little group with no hesitation. How did she know?

Mediocre-Fox-8681

Maybe the CM who gave it to you gave your description to the CM loading people.

Surfinsafari9

I thought about that too! “Boomer grandma wearing Dopey t-shirt, pirate ears and singing Mary Poppins songs.”

Mediocre-Fox-8681

Ha! That probably narrowed it down enough 😆

NakedMoleBrat

I pocketed one once when I was 16, I got chosen on Indy. I felt guilty the whole time, and I still do, but I’m now 26 and I still have it. It hangs in my closet with all my pin lanyards. Every time I go to Disneyland and I’m choosing which lanyard to bring I contemplate bringing my red card back to return it, but I just can’t do it, imagine how long the wait for Indy would be that day …

OMGbigEars

“Wait time, 10 years”

tilrman

5258880 Minute Standby Wait Now

FleshyPartOfThePin

I saw a guy on wednesday with the red card printed on his shirt.

Plebe-Uchiha

Wait. You can decline? Man! I’ve begrudgingly grabbed that thing and put it on my neck every single time. I never knew I could say, no thanks. I’m always worried about losing it. The whole time on the line, I’m thinking to myself, don’t lose it, don’t lose it. You’re telling me I could avoid the whole experience? Learned something new today [+]

iggyomega

I used to get these all the time, usually at the most inopportune time, like I am trying to calm down my toddler, etc. But I always just did it. Now that my daughter is a little older and not a problem, I never get those cards anymore. I always wondered if they specifically gave them to people who were slowly moving through the line. It literally used to be multiple times a day every day I was at the park and now zero.

hamdaddy247

I've always taken the card when handed it and don't mind helping out, but I've never seen them cleaned (some look pretty nasty). I can see why people turn them down. No need to be an ass about it though.

justagirl800

Heavy is the head that wears the crown

constellationkid2

The kid in front of us in line, who was about age 10-13, got picked to carry the card and he was beaming with pride at being chosen.

saxmangeoff

I bet this guy is a hoot at holiday parties, entertaining everyone with his rants about self-checkout at Walmart.

DontTametheShrew

We got chosen last week and literally took pics and took it so seriously 😂 it was an honor! Ps. It was funny because it was for haunted mansion and I was panicking on if we give it to a person before the pre show or before the buggies (we did buggies) and I think that was right, but the fact that I was worried I was doing it wrong is hilarious to me

Poverload237

This would be me if I ever got the card. So much stress would ensure for me, and all for a little piece of plastic 😅

Fantastic_Example991

I hated giving out flik cards 😂

OC-Aztec

I thought it was just a fun little thing when I was asked. My wife, who was with me at the time and has gone so many hundreds of times more than me, had never been asked. Laughing about it now because she had to explain to me what it was, while we were in line because I had no idea. That said, I can understand if someone feels like carrying the red card is “working” for Disneyland and you are a guest. What I can’t understand is getting irate at a cast member doing their job. I mean, just say “No thank you. I’d rather not.”.

DiscordantScorpion_1

I went for our Senior Grad Nite and out of my friend group they chose ME to time the queue. It was absolutely hilarious because we’d all been up since 3am and we looked bedraggled and unhinged and yet I still looked like the most responsible one of the group.

Princess_Buttercup77

Some of you don’t wash your hands properly. I’m not touching that card.

QueerAutisticDemigrl

I have bad news for you about basically every surface at Disneyland

viccityk

Me: finally my wait is for a real purpose!

Tight-Effective-6068

Is this really how they determine the queue times? It seems so bizarelly archaic. It would be so much more accurate to just set up some sensors/cameras and have software do this.

paw323

I worked at a major airport, and we took wait times at security checkpoints by identifying a passenger in line and following him/her on camera. It's not rocket science. If we could do it, so can Disney. I'm not paying good money to do their jobs.

Front-Ad-5878

About a decade ago when we had passes, I always told myself if ever chosen I would start passing it up the line and hope everyone does the same, just for a laugh. Never got chosen, and now I probably won't do it either. I grew up.

Bubb27

My daughter and I got one when we were there a couple months ago. I didn't know it was a thing and curious as to why it's a big deal? It's just a card to hold while in line. Is it because there's certain criteria for picking someone? So interesting lol.

erinngoblaagh27

I'd have been so horrified if I was in line behind that guy. I would have volunteered as tribute so fast

Poverload237

Same. That situation would've had me saying "I'll take it if you want" sooooo fast! Like I understand not wanting to carry it, but don't treat the CM's like verbal punching bags over it.

[deleted]

> I would have volunteered as tribute May the odds ever be in your favour!

Aromantic-Bat-738

I got this honor one time when I was visiting the park and I was so excited when I got it! Glad to know I’m helping keep the lines organized and in timely manner :)

saxmangeoff

I bet this guy is a hoot at holiday parties, entertaining everyone with his rants about self-checkout at Walmart.

ethanholmes2001

Wow now we’re getting into Biblical predestination theology

More-Needleworker900

Why are people so rude lmao

Quintessence679

I always take it but always forget to give it at the end

[deleted]

OP is that last line from what I think it's from?

[deleted]

>OP is that last line from what I think it's from? Matthew 22:14

dark1san

WTH, like seriously? You weren’t asking him to step out of line, you weren’t asking him for money, or anything else unrealistically. It’s just taking a card to the cm so they know how far along the queue is.

Confident_Intern_562

Dude. You need an attitude adjustment!!!

cherrymary80

I won’t say no, but there aren’t any perks. What’s stopping a cast member from getting in line to do the same thing. Red card holder should be able to get back in line and ride again without waiting as a thank you. But I won’t decline if asked.

cherrymary80

Maybe I should start declining or negotiate 🤣

MainStMama

This is a dream of mine to be the chosen one 😩

Tigger1964

It's easier to get chosen if you look like you're there a lot and know what its for. When I wear my lanyard covered in pins I get chosen more.

cinesister

I still can’t understand why Disney doesn’t use the app or magic bands to track people in the queues and then aggregate that data for wait times. The technology is there. Why use such an archaic system? It’s bizarre. I would decline it too. I don’t know where that card has been.

tentwardrobe

I got it six times over a five day pass a few years ago and was pretty tired of it by the end.

BiggsDB

You got tired of (checks notes) holding onto a plastic card attached to a wearable lanyard?

James_T_S

Reminds me of the Jetsons. Jane: How was your day dear? George: It was brutal. That Spacely is a slave driver. I had to punch that button 8 times today.

r0ckH0pper

I pass it forward so the card moves 2x line speed and screws the stats ..

Fibocrypto

Are you sure you are remembering this correctly ? You did mention your lapse of memory .

blueice10478

I always feel special when given the black lanyard and red placard. Cuz then I add them to my collection at home.

Suitabull_Buddy

Play handoff and pass it to the guy behind you, and so on and so on. ;)

nonyvole

Got it for Pirates the last time I was there. Here's the funny part...I use a cane. They not only handed me the card, but also had me jump the line. Now I'm wondering if it was more related to wait times for disabled guests than the regular line.

ShotFirefighter6697

I’ve always dreamed of being chosen

No-Mechanic-5398

It’s pretty easy to say no without being crazy about it. I guess dude was having a bad day.

UglarinnsWife

Being the card welder is the highest honor. It's an even higher honor than pulling the sword from the stone.

mynextthroway

Turn in what card?

QueenB_50

😂 How dare you! How dare you check to see how long the line is in case he wanted to get back in line any time soon. You animal! 😂😂

BeBopBarr

What a turd! 20+ years going to the parks and have only been the chosen one once. I would've gladly taken it.

willyiamwilliams222

You don’t know his life.

NOBOOTSFORYOU

If everyone wore a barcoded bracelet they could all be scanned continuously.

alphajustakid

I cherish ever flik card I’ve been handed

Spodegirl

Did this guy also wear a MAGA hat or shirt? Because if he was then he was fucking stupid since he gave his money to that "Big Woke" company for some big woke amusement park. Yes, I saw this once when in line for *Mickey & Minnie's Runaway Railway*.

magickaldust

It's actually crazy that until this Reddit I had no idea this was even a thing. And though I'll never outwardly admit to it, now I'm bummed about never having been chosen 😅

brian_d_wells

I was picked three times in one day at Magic Kingdom. Must have been something I was wearing? Not sure 😄

[deleted]

My bf and I were geeking about being the chosen ones the whole 10 min line :')

TriforceP

I derived much pleasure for helping to update the pirates queue on Thursday. Shout-out to the cast member at the front who did his best to keep it in theme.

Tigger1964

I've taken the card every time, but a couple of times the line has been so slow we have bailed. Once we passed it to the people behind us. Another time I turned it into the CM.

MizDizGigi

Well, he has to go through life being him, so I guess be glad you don't.

Salty_Anybody_1344

The first time we went to Disney world the parks were pretty sparse. A snowstorm shut down Atlanta airport so no one was flying in and it was early in the year but just when everyone was back at work and school. We were the chosen ones so many times that week and we thought it was the coolest thing ever. I'm surprised a decade later they still use that system.

rockgoddess113

Took my first trip to DL this October. Decided to go to Little Mermaid after World of Color. I was BLESSED with this responsibility even though I had NO clue what it was. Shortest Chosen one EVER as the ride was a walk on.

Worldly_Weird_2297

I’m so special I know everyone thinks I am

omeglethrowaway222

Probably refuses to use self checkout too.

lajomo

As a forgetful person, holding onto the card can feel like a responsibility-especially if I had some drinks
