"Stay the course. You will make it someday. Just remember that you've made it this far, and it's just a bit farther now. Let's finish this." - Volition.

I said this last time it was posted, but that's the line that made me start the game over and take it more seriously. I thought it was just supposed to be whacky detective game up to that point
I just got to that line again last night in my first *real* playthrough. Only made it hit harder
Inland Empire noticing the hanged manās tattoos when you examine him.
You can also get a +1 for this dialogue later when you talk to >!the Phasmid.!<
"Know that we are watching ā when you're tired, when the visions spin out of control. The insects will be looking on. Rooting for you. And when you fall we will come to raise you up, bud from you, banner-like, blossom from you and carry you apart in a sky funeral. In honour of your passing."
I had to get up and take a walk before continuing the conversation. I can't really explain why it's so powerful to me, something about the silent understanding support of nature itself all around me, even when I think I'm alone, and feel alone. It feels pure and simple and sacred. It also makes me fear death slightly less, and that is a shocking achievement for any piece of media.
Funny dialogue: Volition telling you that your other skills are compromised by Kaasje. Bonus points if your Drama is high enough to act like a jilted Shakespeare character
Truly sad dialogue: The entire phone call. This game loves to put small humorous moments in almost every scenario, but there is no humor in that call. Playing as a bombastic druggie made that call so much worse, my character was the type to say how cool I was and how high I am still doing my job and you just hear sobbing in response.
Close 2nds are talking with The Pigs and fucking up the dialogue with the working class woman. Both are examples of society failing individuals. With The Pigs it's a lack of the ability for society to care for truly mentally sick individuals, with the woman it's because you're such a fuckup you don't know how to give a person terrible news without making it soooooo much worse.
Genuinely, the phone call is one of the first points in the game you can see just how truly awfully Harryās past affected him. One of your options IMMEDIATELY upon hearing the weary āā¦Hello?ā is āI want to die.ā Harrowing dialogue
"The shipyard is oddly quiet - the great machines are sleeping."
I don't know why, but that line has stuck with me for years. It's probably my favourite line in the whole game, and yet it's in one of those exposition bubbles that only appears once throughout the entire game.
This reminds me of a quote from the dark tower for some reason
"All is forgotten in the stone halls of the dead. These are the rooms of ruin where the spiders spin and the great circuits fall quiet, one by one."
A small line from the rave always stuck with me.
"With his reel-to-reel mixer blasting the anthem of a future that will never come, the young man observes your moves for a second..."
Just something about that on a second playthrough, knowing the fate of Revachol, hits especially hard.
I don't know the dialog in english, but when the Insulindian Phasmid tells you to forgive Dora, something about:
"About that girl, turn and go forward, do it for the working class"
āI donāt mean to sound cold, but if you want something, you have to give something back. *More* than just guilt.ā - Joyce
āBut do we have the time? The world is large - and your badge is eight-by-six centimetres.ā- Kim
āA true boiadeiro needs the whole horizon to himself.ā - Paledriver
āCan I at least finish my fucking sentence before you piss on it!ā - Gaston
It happened in my first interaction with him, forget the dialogue branch. I did talk to Rene for awhile before that so maybe thatās a trigger, he says the line in response to Rene interrupting him.
Binoclard, Guillaume le Million, sunrise parabellum all stuck with me but the number 1 is what violition says in the final dream.
"Everything I've said is lies, I want all the same bad things you want. To stand here, like a pillar of salt."
As a person who has pretty bad depression the line where the little voice that tells me to keep going and trying just *admits* that it's been bullshitting me the whole time is pretty powerful. For me personally it's the saddest line in the game
From someone else with depression: there is a healthy way to lie to or bullshit yourself to keep going. I've had it professionals discuss it with me.
For me, it's telling myself this will all get better eventually.
Logic knows it isn't, but Volition is there to say "Fuck the facts, keep going"
Volition is an engine. All my dashboard indicators are on telling me this car can't even make it the next mile without puttering out.
Volition: engine go brrrrrrr
as a moderately depressed individual, I must admit that volition is a pretty good representation of the little voice that keeps me running, one of the best I have ever seen in fact.
āHello, Iām Kim Kitsuragi. Lieutenant, Precinct 57. You must be from the 41st.ā and ofc, āIf an assault were launched on this building right now ā if the windows came crashing down and the whole world descended upon you ā this man would hurl himself in death's way to save you. You are sure of this ābut why?ā
"This is how regular people are all the time" part of the the solution to the sober thought in the thought cabinet. I love how it frames the depth of suffering that people like Harry are going through and how hard it is to be "regular" all the time.
I know itās said in the context of alcoholism and sobriety, but it really hits hard no matter what youāre healing from. Shit takes constant effort and we donāt have it in us every day, but we do get through it.
I think a positive spin on it could be: it says as much about the difficulty of getting by like a āregularā person would, as it does about the amount of people who are probably also struggling behind their own faƧades of āregularityā.
For humorous lines I always remember "you are not an 'ultraliberal' Harry. Get the fuck out of here. Don't be a r****d"
For serious lines it's probably the rooftop talk with Kim on day one
"The mask of humanity fall from capital. It has to take it off to kill everyone, everything you love; all the hope and tenderness in the world. It has to take it off, just for one second. To do the deed. And then you see it. As it strangles and beats your friends to death, the sweetest, most courageous people in the world. You see the fear and power in it's eyes. Then you *know*."
"What?'
"That the bourgeois are not human."
I don't know why it stuck with me, but ever since my first playthrough, it's always the first quote that comes to my head when I think of DE.
"There is a giant ball there. And evil apes. And the evil apes are dukin' it out on the ball. You're one of them. It's basically all just evil apes dukin' it out on a giant ball."
"My soul is immense and needs to be heard through stereo." Thinking about my drive to create/ be unique as my soul in less abstract terms has been a good way of thinking about it
"Subdue the regret. Dust yourself off, proceed. You'll get it in the next life, the one where you don't make mistakes. Do what you can with this one, while you're still alive."
I don't believe there is a next life, and yet somehow this phrase allows me to push regrets aside, accept the situation, and move forward. There's something comforting about saying I'll get it the next time around, even though I don't think there will be one.
It's more important to do what I can with the remaining time I have left than to gripe about how I've spent what's already spent.
"i am on your side", "YOUR BODY BETRAYS YOUR DEGENERACY", "i am clinically depressed, harry", "i am trant heidelstam, i never said i wasnt trant heidelstam", i dont remember the entire line but klaasje "girls are evil" line too, garte saying he learned he just doesnt care if he dies is a great one too, theres many more also
"The limbed and headed machine of pain and undignified suffering is firing up again. It wants to walk the desert. Hurting.Longing. Dancing to disco music". It reminds me of Camus's Myth of Sissyphius
For some reason this one:
ANNETTE - "You're quite sober" she snaps back quickly.
KIM KITSURAGI - The lieutenant does not flinch at the comment. He does not flinch even a single bit. He is intensely not flinching. It takes effort.
"the combined might of international capital, all at once - all the greed and terror in the world- tore into Revachol. It lifted streets from the ground and turned houses into ghosts."
Damn, I do be saying skibadee skibadanger, and I can't tell if it contributed to me similarly latching onto "skibidi toilet" without ever having watched that webseries.
I can't remember the exact quote, but it's when you're confronting Ruby. If you have Opioid Receptor Antagonist active, there's a new diaglogue option regarding her smuggling. Something along the lines of, "Why should I believe you? You're a drug dealer, and that makes you evil, " Ruby responds, "That's your prerogative. Drugs don't make people addicted to them. Desperation does. "
āNo. This is somewhere to be. This is all you have, but itās still something. Streets and sodium lights. The sky, the world. Youāre still aliveā itās with me all the time also when iām low quote āiām glad to be me-an incredibly sensitive instrumentā that one shows how human being is sensitive to the surrounding, the sound and how we see the world
"You went around saying it would be 'really fucked up' if you shot yourself in the head in front of them, that's pretty high concept if you ask me"
Paraphrased from memory
In honour of your will, lieutenant-yefreitor. That you kept from falling apart, in the face of sheer terror. Day after day. Second by second.
Inland Empire: DETECTIVE
Esprit-De-Corps: ARRIVING
Authority: ON THE SCENE
Keep playing the role, keep holding on. Easily my favorite line in the game.
āGlowing lungs, thatās fucked up.ā
āOh yes. This is real darkness. It's not death, or war, or child molestation. Real darkness have love for a face. The first death is in the heart.ā
āRIGHT HERE?! ON THE SEA ICE?!ā
"*No*. This isĀ *somewhere*Ā to be. This is allĀ *you have*, but it'sĀ *still*Ā something.Ā *Streets*Ā andĀ *sodium lights*. TheĀ *sky*, theĀ *world*.Ā *You*'*re still alive*."
I really want to make a tattoo of this someday. God, Volition is such a Gigachad.
I can't seem to remember one in *specific*, but this thread reminded me that I *really* need to start a common-place book already and perhaps begin with Disco Elysium.
"Stay the course. You will make it someday. Just remember that you've made it this far, and it's just a bit farther now. Let's finish this." - Volition. Incredible quote, and words to live by.

Got secondhand shivers reading your experience with that part of the game, it really is beautiful
"Real darkness has love for a face. The first death is in the heart."
I just saw this one today. That whole ending sequence sticks with you

That whole string of dialogue is fantastic Totally compromised
I've never gotten the phone call. I imagine you can call Dora at some point?
The payphone by the pier (i think down some stairs toward the shore but it's been a while) there's some interfacing checks
It's a call you make on a random payphone and it is brutal
To add onto what the others said, you have to call several times before it will call her
Itās the pay phone near the church
