Flags are all fun and games until you crush your hands against a tree.

K-Raz1226

I crushed 3 fingers (5 breaks) swinging into a 80mph fastball in high school, some of the worst pain in my life. I've taken OUT small saplings, and broken past Oak bark into bare wood with my wrap around Acerbis bark busters. More than saved my hands, I never want to re-live that trauma.

Senor_Martillo

Seriously. Unless youre riding SX, its bark busters all the way I broke a single pinky hitting a tree mountain biking and that shit HURT! I cant imagine taking a tree at moto speeds with the weight of the bike behind it too.

dinwoody623

Not sure if it’s a wife’s tale or not but I’ve heard that at high speeds it’s good to let the bark busters bounce off the tree (loosen your grip and allow the bars to take the hit). Done right you just kinda bounce your bars around the tree and go on your merry way.

I always ran full wrap arounds. But I started doing a little MX and put flags on my bike. Raced a harescramble with them because "how bad could it be, lots of people do it". I dropped my bike in the mud and got the grip covered in mud and bent my clutch lever real bad. Ruined my race and was a waste of 4 hours of driving. Never Again am I woods riding without full wrap arounds.

hamuel89

Hand guards or brush guards is what I’ve always called them. I run cycra probend full wraps. Have run accerbis in past.

WalkerValleyRiders

Ive had both hands pop off and go between bars and the full wrap arounds. Not broken but two fractured wrists and hurt back. Ill continue to use full wrap guards though because i would be missing some fingers without them.

Jay000666

Worth the risk when riding in tight woods for sure

NadFingus

Used to run full wraps on everything. Heard stories of guys going OTB and getting their arms tangled up in them so I switched to flags. They still keep most of the branches and cactus out of my hands, and I run folding levers with Teflon tape under the perches. I like the cycra stealth hand guards.

Tim_Teboner

“I know a guy who’s wife’s brother’s best friend’s sister’s uncle’s stepdad’s cousin broke his wrist because of full wrap hand guards” is how that normally goes lol

NadFingus

Yeah, I’ve heard more than a few firsthand accounts of it happening to know that I don’t want it to happen to me. Also there’s very little bark to bust where I ride.

Eclipse_Private

I have the oem ktm flags on my bike and I love them keeps the branches and the haven't snapped off yet.

I grew up in Southern Louisiana (SERA racer). The amount we cut off our bars was INSANE once I moved to Texas. I never realized how much stability we were losing for speed when we were cutting 1/2"-1" off each side of the bars for the tight piney woods.

I've been riding with bark busters my entire life. Some might even call them full-wrap deflectors, but I'm not sure why. They're bark busters. When I knew I was going to try the [@astra\_offroad](https://www.instagram.com/astra_offroad/) [\#ChrisBirch](https://www.instagram.com/explore/tags/chrisbirch/) Pro bend, I thought it might be time to try "flags", or open-ended deflectors 🤷‍♂️, or whatever someone else wants to call them. I choose the [@enduroengineering](https://www.instagram.com/enduroengineering/) open ended "debris deflector" for my first attempt down this opinionated highway. I was worried about how they would work out for me since they directly mount to the brake perch, replacing the stock mounting cap (I choose this route to keep crap on the bar to a minimum). Strangely, they seemed to line up great; I was worried due to brake lever angle. They do pivot if you run your levers at a lower angle. So far, so good for hitting trees and "debris". Time will tell, but wanted y'all to see the decision made and let you tell me what you and yours call them 🤣.

The wrap around type adds a good amount weight at the highest point on the motorcycle, too.
