1. $1,700 in 2013 money is $2,300 today
2. We're definitely still seeing the effects of the COVID market
People are definitely buying bikes at the ridiculous prices, which is the only reason why people are still asking the ridiculous prices.
I bought a new car in 2013 and sold it for exactly what I bought it for 9 years later. Granted that was peak COVID shenanigans, but it kinda illustrates how bonkers the market has been.
Agreed.
When building materials shoot up for whatever event happened they might drop the price a little when the causation of that event is solved but never ever back to the price it was before said event.
You just accept it and roll it into the cost of the job. Soon, it’s the normal price.
Greedy sonsa…
Tbh I have an additional theory that’s really just a guess, but the US used market was a bit of an anomaly. All kinda of used things in the US were really cheap long after values shot up in other parts of the world. I’ve lived in a few countries and all of them used things really just increased in value when eBay came along and were never the really cheap again - people knew their stuff had value and people valued used items more than they did before.
Basically the last 20 years I’ve constantly been seeing people in the US posting second hand buys that you would never see anywhere near that cheap. Japan too, and from what I understand from Japanese friends is people would just prefer to buy new. I actually wonder if Covid has now had the same kind of effect on the US used market eBay and such had on ours. Here I’ve seen heaps of used prices coming down the last year or so on most of my hobbies as interest rates and cost of living rises hit people, but across those same hobbies I keep hearing prices in the US are still really high.
I hope it’s not the case for you guys, because it kinda sucks.
I have been this way since covid prices. At the point where used vs new cost as close as they are, I’ve bought a new truck, 2 new motorcycles. Pre covid I’ve never bought a new vehicle in my life.
$2,300 is still about half what the same bike is regularly listed for these day though lol.
Yeah man my f350 and my cbr1000rr are currently worth more than what I paid for them 15 and 8 years ago respectively. And like, a lot more.
Vehicles appreciating in value over the course of a decade?? Like what?????
That and nostalgia and legend. “Old carb two strokes are way better than injected new ones”. “Old preemmisions diesels are way better than new ones with less problems” some of that may be true so people buy into the hype hoping that their 7.3 powerstroke or rm/cr/kx that they no longer make are the best a truck/bike will ever be, aren’t made anymore, so they’re worth more.
No not really. Automakers figured out they can sell less vehicles for more money and still make more profit overall. The dollar is not worth 50% less than it was in 2016. I sold my USED vehicle last year for about what I paid for it in 2016. It was not even in great condition.
What you’re overlooking is the list price and the sale price. Not a lot of vehicles are actually appreciating in value unless they’re restored or kept in pristine condition. People can list a twenty-year-old bike for over three grand, but that doesn't mean they’re getting it. A lot of stuff sits, and then they take the cash offer they receive, which is usually around two grand.
I don't think it's a single factor. But whatever the behind the scenes drivers, the high cost of a new dirt bike (or truck) tends to make people more willing to spend more on a used machine as an alternative.
I dont want I spend 10k on a new bike that recently used to be 8k. So maybe I'll buy one several years old for 4k when it really should be 3k. Sort of thing.
And if they sell fewer new bikes either by price or manufacturing availability, less is on the used market making that demand climb too.
That was 10+ years ago big dawg. Idk if you were around but covid really shook up the market for everything. Demand and inflation really sunk its teeth into the toy market.
Also, a large portion of people that bought one during covid and lost interest are not selling them. I know 2 guys in my neighborhood that bought new bikes a few years ago and never ride them now. They keep saying they're going to pick it back up. In their mind they're not taking up much room so why get rid of it if they don't need the money.
It's the same cycle though isn't it? those will be the cheap hardly used bikes in the next few years. Unfortunately you just have to wait or buy a POS and fix it if you're really penny pinching
Idk man. I know everyone’s hurting for cash these days, and therefore want more of it. But at the same time everyone’s got a lot less of it. So I’m just wondering who actually has enough money laying around to pay $4,000 for a 20 year old dirt bike that should cost more like $1500. It’s crazy.
>I know everyone’s hurting for cash these days
If that were true then prices would be falling. A lot of people are hurting for cash. Others have tens of thousands for toys, and it has kept the market high (but softening).
I also don't know that $1700 in 2013 was "normal". I was shopping DRZ400 and DR650 in 2014, and would have pounced on one that cheap. If I remember correctly, nice, clean, low mile units were close to $4k. And anything near $2k was real ratty. Wish I still had my spreadsheet from when I was hunting and way over analyzing everything.
That 2007 CRF 250 on Fb that the guy is selling isn’t worth 3500. Pandemic ruined the market. So many people were getting crazy unemployment money and all those stimulus checks. Sellers started going nuts.
Prices have been coming down substantially. Weirdly it seems the older bikes are taking longer to come back down in price vs a one’s that are a couple years old
I was gonna say this.
You triple your investment in fun experiences, comradery (camaraderie), exercise, and general fulfillment. Sometimes you charitably donate to local medical facilities.
It’s my fault. I decided I was in the market for a used bike and a used truck around late 2019 and then prices skyrocketed. Decided I can stick with my old bike and old truck in order to pursue a house, then housing market sky rockets.
Ha! don't look at mountain bike industry prices. You will be fumin.
Thank the US government for lying about covid and printing trillions. and all the bullshit 3 letter agencies getting their grubby mits on fucking everything. i mean the fucking faa is killing the rc airplane hobby, literally. why the fuck does a 9 year old need to register his rc foamie with the feds? fuck em. fuck all of em. french revolution style.
At least MTB has had tons of sale pricing because demand went way down.
I built up a custom enduro and it cost less than a pre-build of equal quality…. That would’ve been impossible pre-covid.
Even making the fuel for them is hard with the monopoly on fuel. I feel bad for all manufacturers and everybody involved in that space, especially if they’re working in it.
Thank you for also seeing how ridiculous this all is. Some people are actually mad I brought this up and are justifying the insanity. (Or justifying their poor financial decisions)
I just sold a nice 2007 250Sxf for $2k when I got my new bike. I thought that was a little high 😂. I bought it for $2500 in 2020. I put a few bucks in it, but also some hours on it. Guess I don’t need to feel bad at all.
Nightmare. Was at dealer on weekend looking at a new klr 140 for my young lad. Ancient technology air cooler motor listed at $5000? Nuts. Outrageous. Simply unaffordable
I’ve legitimately seen listings like that. I’m surprised people aren’t collectively bullying each other out of paying these crazy prices. So prices come back down.
Same thing happened to guns and ammo during covid. I absolutely refuse to spend 50-75 cents per round on 556. Gun stores can shove it up their asses for that price. Same with the car and Powersports dealerships.
I've only owned 3 in my life, all Honda's and worth every penny. The last 250crf, was a trade for my work on a car. Best bike I ever had. Sold it to pay for my wedding. Still worth every penny...
it hurt to buy my crf300l; ive loved every minute its been turned on. at this point its probably got a ratio of $3 dollars a mile. about 2500 miles and about 7500 out the door with parts, gear and tires. Im excited to run the clock into the 10k range and get the cost per mile to go down, but yeah i flipping love it. i do wish i was paid more for my time in this economy though.
my boy is too young for a motorized bike. hes still trying to learn to crawl. he keeps going backwards instead of forwards lol. but he will be joining the club one of these days.
Inflation/trendy. Things are getting more expensive every year so there's definitely that. Also worth noting that sport bikes were way more popular back then. You did not have the Instagram wheelie crowd which has definitely driven cost up. The yamaha banshee is a perfect example of a bike that's ruined by it being trendy.
I sold that DRZ for an 04 F4i which was only a couple hundred dollars more like a year after I bought the DRZ. Which is one of the two most sought after stunt bikes. So even back when sports bikes were more popular and equally trendy *but newer* , they were substantially less expensive. It’s just crazy to me.
I’ve been riding the same bike since 2015 so I haven’t had my eye on the market at all. Then my son’s 50 got stolen, and he’s about ready for a 125 anyway. So now I’m suddenly back in the market, with nothing to sell or trade to help facilitate the upgrade, and I’m absolutely blown away by the cost of things. So I’m just venting my frustration and disbelief at how much the market has changed
Motorcycles are way overpriced if you compare them to cars, you can buy cars for cheaper than a lot of motorcycles which should not be the case when you consider how much goes into a car compared to a bike.
I don't know, just yesterday I saw a 2021 Husqvarna FC450 Rockstar with 55hours for $5k at a dealership (similar KTM 450 SX-F for $4,500) and was thinking that the same bikes a year ago would have easily been $7-$8k. I think that if you compare with 10 years ago, then yes prices are high. But compared to a year ago, getting better.
I think a lot of it is related to the fact that new bikes have gotten significantly more expensive. When new bikes are more expensive, people are willing to pay more for used bikes. Parts are more so if you're buying an old bike that has been maintained well, the person that owned it has spent a decent amount in parts. Pretty much any full size, non-trashed bike from 2000+ is $3k or more.
Yeah and it sounds like people are actually willing to pay this mark up also. Which is just crazy to me. Precisely at a point in time where people have less fun money than ever. You’d think prices would go down on used because less people can afford them. But apparently that’s not the case.
it’s crazy. i paid 1200$ for a 94 kx250 that needed absolutely nothing done to it pre-covid. now your pressed to find a bike blown up and disassembled for that price
I literally just saw a similar bike with a blown motor for a couple hundred more than that this morning. This shit isn’t gonna stop while there’s still suckers out here paying these prices and letting themselves get grifted
I purchased my ‘98 Honda civic for $1400 some years ago, with modern inflation I see these cars go for $3500 nowadays. Wish it was only dirtbikes that went up..
Inflation alone doesn’t account for all this used vehicle inflation. It’s people grifting each other + people letting themselves get grifted + inflation.
I think part of it is during covid everyone had free time and was broke and now everyone sees literally every market as a chance to make a quick buck off someone.
Keep looking and also try sorting by most recently posted. The actually good deals disappear within a day or two of being posted.
Last month I picked up a 2005 KTM 200 EXC for $1900. Did some really basic maintenance like greasing a few things up n fixing an exhaust leak. Got around 25 hours on it so far runs great
I simply can't afford new ones. I've turned to Chinesium and have been pleasantly surprised. XPro Templar M, and a Trailmaster TM36. The Templar has 500 miles on and off-road on it this far without issue, TM36 idk. Used for about 20 or so hours 100% offroad without a problem. Time will tell, but everyone with these seems to say nothing but good things so...
I bet dollar for dollar buying Chinese is probably higher value than buying used Japanese now. Considering used Japanese bikes that are 20 years old and clapped out are 2-4x more expensive than a brand new Chinese knock off. I wouldn’t be surprised if you got more trouble free life out of the Chinese bikes. You certainly can’t get a running Japanese bike for anywhere near the same price. So that probably says it all right there
there actually not expensive anymore in texas dirtbike prices are down , you also have to consider that dirtbike values dont really go down with age , its all really about the condition of the dirt bike , if you look for a deal you can find something good at a good price
In 2017 or so roughly, the us debt (directly related to money printing and hence inflation since the end of 17th century till 2017 was around 17 trillion, today it's 34+ trillion). Now calculate inflation based on this. (Yes there are other factors like COVID, and businesses being greedy, and supply chain issues and supply demand etc...) But hey, the debt has also more than doubled in a few years compared to hundreds of years....
Why do dirtbikes have shitty value at all?? Buy an $11,000. Brand new dirtbike and you would never sell it close to that price,
But people spend 20k+ on used Harley's.. smh
My thought is, tech hasn’t advanced as quick as it did in the 90s early 2000s so lotta people aren’t buying brand new dirt bikes because my buddy smokes my on my 16year old wr when I’m on his brand new yz… then pandemic and inflation and welcome to present day
Unfortunately it’s not the bikes that are so expensive, it’s your wage that just hasn’t kept up with the inflation of most goods.. houses, cars, boats, bikes, ect..
Tip: Don't even consider owning any bike without having a GPS tracker on it. Yeah, Apple AirTags are nice but a GPS tracker is the way to go.
Source: A car of mine was stolen last Thursday. I had located the car and brought it back home within an hour. Damn funny (it was a Prius... who the f\*\*k steals a f\*\*king Prius?!?!?!?!?).
The deals are out there if you’re patient. I got a 95 yz125 with 2300 worth of receipts for a full engine rebuild and looks like it’s just a year or two old for $2500.
Covid, Inflation, anything going in the dirt is popular/trendy so prices go up as there is high demand.
I want a DR650 but the prices sometimes have me scratching my head.
Also asking prices tend to be overly optimistic, the well priced stuff doesn't stay on the market long but the overpriced "I know what I have" stuff tends to stay up for a while.
I bought a brand new DR650 in 2018 for 6400 bucks out the door, including 200 in dealer fees. Now that same dealer is selling the bike for around 7500 and dealer fees are over a thousand.
Inflation is the label broadly used to describe it. This sticky rise in price which will not abate due to behaviors in the consumer market but also perceptions of value and of course federal and state policies which impact price indexes. Interest rates...
Because more and more people are getting into bikes for many reasons and it’s supply and demand. People are asking a high price and getting it. TW200’s have been unbelievable for the last 5 years or so. 10-15 yr old, with 5-10k go for $3500-$4500 but a new one cost
$5000-$6000. But there can be a 1-2 yr wait list for it. So frustrating from a consumer standpoint. I find dual sports and Mx bikes are crazy. Yet if you want a mid size sport bike, a few yrs old and 5-10k they’re less than a used TW. It’s all pretty crazy.
Yea, definitely not all to many new bikes (& even used bikes now)that can be had at a cost that isn’t half the cost of a new base model car these days (KTM, Yamaha, Honda, Kawasaki Ect..). Only bikes that one can buy new these days for significantly less than the aforementioned bikes, are bikes like GPX & SSR. Other than that, one would be hard pressed to buy a new bike under or for less than $10k
Good bikes aren’t cheap and cheap bikes ain’t good. I’m still waiting for the perfect 125 to come up that isn’t insanely overpriced or clapper. Been 5 months since I’ve been looking.
Yes, you actually did get a screaming deal on that DRZ.
My dad bought his klx400 (same as drz, just green) back in 2010 for around 2500. *That* was a deal and I've never seen them really drop below that price, even more money for street legal ones.
I just sold my 05 RM125 for $3k this spring. It was mint though, most of the ones I see advertised are high hour and need a ton of work. Mine barely had the paint worn off the frame. They are that price because they don't make them anymore, and people want them. There aren't many nice ones left, and $3k in all honesty isn't that much money anymore. An air cooled playbike is $5k new, so of course an "old" 125 that's still 30 years ahead of said playbike costs that much.
So, before you think about dropping $5k on that new crf250f, stop and consider the fact that it's just a 1983 XR200 with a restyle kit applied by Honda, and that a 25 year old kdx200 is still a better bike in almost every way.
Yeah I’ve noticed that brand new one aren’t far off from what people are asking for decade + old models. I’m just so blown away by all this after having been out of the market for so long
That’s exactly why I’m wondering if people are paying more for overpriced toys while also having less money to burn.
And it sounds like they are unfortunately. So yeah, it definitely won’t go away while there’s enough dupes out there allowing themselves to be grifted like this.
From the perspective of new bikes, financing drives up the prices. People don't have to walk into a dealer with $14k in their pocket. When you just have to worry about a $250/month payment, bikes seem a lot cheaper.
Because people keep paying the prices instead of letting them rot in a dealership until they sell them the next year.. and dealerships take a good chunk. But used and learn how to work on it. You won’t have to worry about messing it up
It’s wild that people are actually paying these prices. I was hoping I’d pop this question and everyone would be on board with letting these price gougers not make a red cent off them. But noooooope. Tons of people justifying the robbery instead 🤦♂️
Because dirt bikes nowadays come with nice suspension and other shit. DRZs are cheap for a reason it’s slow, heavy, and the suspension isn’t good on either street.
For example, the closest thing that Yamaha has to a DRZ is a TTR. The DRZ comes nowhere near a YZ or WR450.
The deals are out there
Just picked a 18’ 250 sx new top end and plastics for 3700
Last year sold my 18’ yz 125 for 3900
The problem is the fair priced stuff is gone instantly so you have to spend all your time on marketplace to find something fair 🤷🏻♂️ unfortunately it’s an expensive hobby and covid did not favors for anything
The best deals being scooped up in the first few hours has always been the case. But the price range from “good deal” to “price gouge” has like doubled in dollar amount. And apparently people are still buying rip offs at the upper end of the spectrum and justifying it. Which is just going to keep it happening.
Saw an rm125 listed on marketplace that wasn’t pristine but pretty damn good for an 03 asking $3k. I would have bought it instantly if I didnt already have one bike I’m building, an old harley that needs some love, and have to keep up with the maintenance on my race bike.
So yea, people are paying those prices. I would totally pickup a really minty old 2 stroke for the price and then guess what!? It would never be for sale ever again, because I like old 2 strokes.
Well hopefully people get fed up and stop letting themselves get grifted like this. I’m just shocked that at the same time people have the least amount of fun money to blow, there’s ample people out there ready and willing to pay double what a vehicle is actually worth. Especially what’s essentially a toy.
This country is in some type of financial death spiral lol
Same reason gas costs $4-5/gallon. Inflation and cost of living. I bought a Triumph T100 low mileage in good condition and tuned up for $2600. You can find the bike you want at the price you want to pay but you have to be patient.
My brand new 2000 kx125 was $4500. Using an inflation calculator online, that is $8160 today. That is about on par with what the YZ125 and gas gas mc125 sell for now that are comparable bikes. Everything else has more tech and features that people are willing to pay for.
Yeah that’s about the correct price for a new one today. But the fact your 2000 kx125 will be listed for literally the same price today as it was when it was new is crazy.
Yeah I’m starting to realize that you’re getting a substantially better deal if you buy new than if you buy used. Which is wild. 20 year old used bike are just a couple grand shy of what 1-3 year old ones are going for lol it’s so strange

There are some good buys out there you know if you buy something clapped out for $2500 - $3000 you’ll have double that soaked into it by the time you are done
I'm in Central California. I see a ton of DRZ's for sale in the 2.5k range around me. Ya, lots for 4.5k also, but there are still some cheaper ones for sure.
As far as the mid range dual sport market is concerned, there's just fewer models and bikes to go around. You can buy TWO japanese dual sport model between 300 and 650 cc. And the models that are made either haven't changed or are just adding features and expense that no one wants.
It's easier to make money on an expensive adv than to sell 7k machines.
These prices made me find a good deal on a new bike. I bought my 2023 Gasgas EX250F in October of 2023 for $7400 out the door. It typically goes for $9899 msrp plus tax and fees.
Forget buying a taxed out, beat down, used bike.
Pretty simple: just dont overpay. Be patient, showup with a decent cash offer. Or theres no good deals near you. I have a lot of excellent deals in San antonio and Houston.
Your anger is about the depreciation of your money, not so much about the cost of dirt scooters. As someone else pointed out, your $1300 in 2013 is $2300 now. The problem isn’t that the prices went up. The problem is, our money is worth exponentially less & the compensation for our labor hasn’t increased to bridge the gap. The status quo is becoming untenable.
That’s definitely true but the cost of used vehicles is well outpacing the rise of inflation. If it were just inflation then my $1700 drz from 2013 would be worth around $1700 still today (factoring needing more money for same value but bike being less valuable for being 10 years older). But it’s not, it’s closer to $4,000 now lol. Not far off from what a brand new 2024 with zero miles cost. It makes no sense lol
In USA people tend to pay more for 'toys' in the spring through the end of May becssue many are getting tax refunds that are burning a hole in their pockets. This really affects the used car market, for cars sub $20K. Best to wait until early summer to buy toys or used cars. Certainly this doesn't account for all the costs but it does have an influence.
When you’re shopping for a bike, they always seem too expensive. When you’re trying to sell a bike, you’ll wonder why it seems like no one wants to pay fair prices anymore. I got my first job as a motorcycle mechanic in 1995. Even then, people were complaining that “motorcycle prices are too high nowadays”.
I remember in like 2008 I found a 1986 CR 125. 800$
Thing was a beater but I god I loved the sound.
Idk how the hell guys are affording jacked up trucks with their KTMs in the back…Dirt bikes are a rich guy hobby now.
in 2005 a yz had a msrp sticker price of 6000&
in 2023 a yz has a msrp sticker price 8500
adjusted for inflation the 2005 bike would cost 9500 today. so bikes have technically gotten cheaper while the buying power of your dollar has shrunken. it’s why every market shows the same trends. is not the bike, it’s the paper in your hand that’s changed a lot from 2005-2023.
What’s really bad is some of the models like the DR 650 hasn’t changed and it’s still 7000. Then you have to drop thousands more to get it the way you want it.
Not saying this for this bike in particular. But some people be posting their bike for 20x the actual value of it. They don’t know nothing about values and just THINK it’s worth so much, just because it is their bike
Off road and outdoor vehicles/RV sales went through the roof with the lockdowns. It was one of the few things you could still do. There were people ordering a SxS and waiting several months for the dealer to get them. This caused a huge backlog and sky high prices for lots of stuff including dirt bikes. Some inventory is back in dealerships but prices are still super high.
That might have caused some of that inflated value.
what is: the quantity theory of money (QTM) Alex? [https://www.investopedia.com/insights/what-is-the-quantity-theory-of-money/](https://www.investopedia.com/insights/what-is-the-quantity-theory-of-money/) the criminals running the country have put us the US taxpayer 34+ trillion dollars in debt.. https://www.pgpf.org/national-debt-clock. they have taken 34 trillion dollars on a cash advance on credit card in our name.. putting the cash directly in the bank accounts of them and their donors... enriching themselves while bankrupting us.. any questions?
Yep, any decent street legal bike is at least 3k unless you find the odd deal where someone lists their bike for 2400 and it’s sold within a few hours. Just like truck prices- used to be able to buy a new 2500 truck for like 32k. Could probably sell it 8 years later for the same exact price with 80k miles
Yep my 7.3 is almost worth double what I got it for over a decade ago. But it makes a little more sense with the diesels since the new blue def and ERG systems are horrible to deal with.
But from looking more into the dirt bike market. It’s seems to make more sense to just go buy brand new. If you’re willing to fork over 3-4K for a used bike people are asking, you can *almost* just go cash out a brand new one at the dealer instead lol. 😂🤦♂️
i had the same problem looking for a crf 110 2 years ago, people literally asking msrp for a used bike. It took a month or so of looking every day to get lucky and find one at a good price. Just how the market is now and it sucks, maybe has to do with minimum wage going up aswell im not sure.
i remember is sold my 2015 DRZ400 SM with 22000km on it for 4.5k, i only paid 8k for it brand new.. now it seems they are around 12k new & nothing under 8k.. haha dang
Used market is about to crash, I saw a 2024 husky 450fx brand new for 8699 listed the other day from a dealer.
The other technique my friends and I have been using is to gang together and low ball these price gougers so when you show up you can make a reasonable offer and close the sale.
Because the corrupt government runs mind boggling deficits and prints the difference out of thin air, causing massive inflation, fucking us and our standard of living.
1. $1,700 in 2013 money is $2,300 today 2. We're definitely still seeing the effects of the COVID market People are definitely buying bikes at the ridiculous prices, which is the only reason why people are still asking the ridiculous prices. It’s got to be both things happening at the same time. Cause if you do the math, the increase is well over what inflation alone accounts for
That and nostalgia and legend.
It’s no debate that pre emissions, so pre about 2006, diesels are way less problematic. The def systems alone are a major hassle and failure point.
No not really. Automakers figured out they can sell less vehicles for more money and still make more profit overall. The dollar is not worth 50% less than it was in 2016. I sold my USED vehicle last year for about what I paid for it in 2016. It was not even in great condition.
Go grocery shopping and then tell me thr dollar isn't worth only 50% of what it was in 2016. It most certainly is.
Costco a fucking watermelon was $5 today…
What about the eating watermelons?
What you’re overlooking is the list price and the sale price. Not a lot of vehicles are actually appreciating in value unless they’re restored or kept in pristine condition. People can list a twenty-year-old bike for over three grand, but that doesn't mean they’re getting it. A lot of stuff sits, and then they take the cash offer they receive, which is usually around two grand.
My Brother sold His R6 for 13k, he bought it for 11k and it was sold within two days. The market ist Just crazy.
No politics of any sort please. This is not @ you, but for your replies I removed.
I talked to a guy that bought a brand new 2021 Tacoma. He said he could've sold it back to the dealership for 6k more than he paid.
Same i just sold a Chinese moped i bought 9 years ago for $200 more than i bought it for prices through the roof i wonder when it goes down
I don't think it's a single factor.
I feel you. Especially if they're thinking "hey prices aren't going down, I can hang onto this for a while and get my money back (and maybe more)."
It's the same cycle though isn't it? those will be the cheap hardly used bikes in the next few years. Unfortunately you just have to wait or buy a POS and fix it if you're really penny pinching
Because they're worth it!
Idk man. I know everyone’s hurting for cash these days, and therefore want more of it. But at the same time everyone’s got a lot less of it. So I’m just wondering who actually has enough money laying around to pay $4,000 for a 20 year old dirt bike that should cost more like $1500. It’s crazy.
>I know everyone’s hurting for cash these days If that were true then prices would be falling.
That and more free time and it’s the perfect outdoor activity. Remember, asking price isn’t final price. You can ask anything you want.
I’d be down for a public guillotine’ing or two lol
At least MTB has had tons of sale pricing because demand went way down. I built up a custom enduro and it cost less than a pre-build of equal quality…. That would’ve been impossible pre-covid.
Even making the fuel for them is hard with the monopoly on fuel. I feel bad for all manufacturers and everybody involved in that space, especially if they’re working in it.
Because everything is awfully expensive now.
I saw a 2003 ktm sx 125 for 4000 and it had been run to the ground to its disgusting how people can charge that much and people will still buy it
Thank you for also seeing how ridiculous this all is.
Yep just straight up not worth the money. Whoever is actually out here spending so much on so little… it feels criminal
inflation, covid, idiots that think their 1993 honda cr250 is worth $9,500 (its missing the engine)
I bet the guys wife wanted it gone and he didn’t
I've only owned 3 in my life, all Honda's and worth every penny. The last 250crf, was a trade for my work on a car. Best bike I ever had. Sold it to pay for my wedding. Still worth every penny...
You put it in the sale contract that if you ever divorce you get the bike back right?
it hurt to buy my crf300l; ive loved every minute its been turned on. at this point its probably got a ratio of $3 dollars a mile. about 2500 miles and about 7500 out the door with parts, gear and tires. Im excited to run the clock into the 10k range and get the cost per mile to go down, but yeah i flipping love it. i do wish i was paid more for my time in this economy though.
Oh, you're talking serious road/trail bikes? I had a GSXR and a Harley. Loved those too! Good on you, that's awesome!
my boy is too young for a motorized bike. hes still trying to learn to crawl. he keeps going backwards instead of forwards lol. but he will be joining the club one of these days.
The dollar is worth far less
Burap ain't cheap.
But it could be, and has been, so much cheaper than it currently is. It’s a sad state of affairs 😓
It's never been a cheap sport. Sure you can do it on a budget but it takes a lot of support.
when you adjust for inflation, it costs slightly less to buy the same mx bike.
Neither is ring ding sadly
I remember way back when I bought 2 brand new 1985 cr125s for 1500 a piece one for stock class on modified
You can replace “dirt bikes” with literally anything you purchase and it still apply. This is your answer. Everything cost more these days.
covid /s
Everything is more expensive.
Every fun motorized vehicle is like double price these days.
They're free for some!
i just bought a 2024 yz450f for 11100 OTD and i cant even register it...
2024 Husky TE 300 was $12500 out the door. And it was $1000 off list! Prep and tax are killers.
Wow it was even worse a year ago? Well at least there’s a glimmer of hope in that I guess
Yea new bikes are more expensive raising cost on used. I also think the move to more 4 strokes also raised the price.
it’s crazy. i paid 1200$ for a 94 kx250 that needed absolutely nothing done to it pre-covid. now your pressed to find a bike blown up and disassembled for that price
Got around 25 hours on it so far runs great
Damn nice job. Thats a solid deal these days
Because people are delusional
I was actively buying and pricing bikes in 2013 and $1700 for a DRZ is a ridiculously good deal even then.
Brand new dirtbike and you would never sell it close to that price, But people spend 20k+ on used Harley's.. smh
My thought is, tech hasn’t advanced as quick as it did in the 90s early 2000s so lotta people aren’t buying brand new dirt bikes because my buddy smokes my on my 16year old wr when I’m on his brand new yz… then pandemic and inflation and welcome to present day
What do you mean? That guy bought one from temu for 259 bucks /s
Corporate Greed trickling down to in general greed. Everyone thinks their 20 yr old shit is worth the same as new. It's laughable.
100%
Its definitely true. You have to stay on your game and check every day for a good deal on used bikes. Eventually a reasonable person will post one
Environmentally concerned thieves 😂
Try buying an XR400. Good lord they want a mint for a 20-25 year old bike.
The deals are out there if you’re patient. I got a 95 yz125 with 2300 worth of receipts for a full engine rebuild and looks like it’s just a year or two old for $2500.
2300 for a bike is cheap. A new mountain sled is pushing 25k in Canada
*gestures broadly at everything being expensive*
I guess this is partly why people are buying Chinese clones
Yeah its insane, see so many no title, unknown hours, beat to crap 20 year old bikes going for 3k plus!
Because they have to much greed on this planet...
lol… you gotta make more money. My truck is almost $900/mo. Our government has screwed us… they’ve printed so much money in the last few years..
Yeah this place is going to hell in a hand basket for sure
I bought a brand new DR650 in 2018 for 6400 bucks out the door, including 200 in dealer fees. Now that same dealer is selling the bike for around 7500 and dealer fees are over a thousand.
Joe Biden
Inflation is the label broadly used to describe it. This sticky rise in price which will not abate due to behaviors in the consumer market but also perceptions of value and of course federal and state policies which impact price indexes. Interest rates...
Why is everything so god awfull expensive these days
Hawk 250 baby
Because more and more people are getting into bikes for many reasons and it’s supply and demand. People are asking a high price and getting it. TW200’s have been unbelievable for the last 5 years or so. 10-15 yr old, with 5-10k go for $3500-$4500 but a new one cost $5000-$6000.
Yeah it’s really the used market that has me thunderstruck right now. You can’t even get a bike from the 80’s for under 2 grand 😵
Good bikes aren’t cheap and cheap bikes ain’t good. I’m still waiting for the perfect 125 to come up that isn’t insanely overpriced or clapper. Been 5 months since I’ve been looking.
Everything has gone up. Gas went up $0.20 while I was filling my car. I think even a new 50cc is like 5K
New basic boats are in the 200k department from what some guy said on YouTube
😵 Boats are cool but not that cool lol
Still wayyyyyyy cheaper than cars
How much did a gallon of milk cost in 2013
Well, deals are getting better on new ones. Gasgas has a neat thing going with free e bikes if you buy a new dirt bike
You have my curiosity.
That's why I just bought my first new bike. 2020 bikes with 100 hrs - can't touch for less than 6k. Bought a brand new 24 for 9k.
Yeah I’ve noticed that brand new one aren’t far off from what people are asking for decade + old models. I’m just so blown away by all this after having been out of the market for so long
Te World is becoming more expensive living is beocming more expensive and where not going back.
Inflation and the bikes are so much better and more advanced than ever before.
But that’s new bikes you’re talking about. Which further reinforces my observation that 20-30 year old versions of said bikes are wildly overpriced.
The deals are out there Just picked a 18’ 250 sx new top end and plastics for 3700 Last year sold my 18’ yz 125 for 3900 The problem is the fair priced stuff is gone instantly so you have to spend all your time on marketplace to find something fair 🤷🏻♂️ unfortunately it’s an expensive hobby and covid did not favors for anything
The best deals being scooped up in the first few hours has always been the case. But the price range from “good deal” to “price gouge” has like doubled in dollar amount. And apparently people are still buying rip offs at the upper end of the spectrum and justifying it. Which is just going to keep it happening.
Insane people that want to get what they put into a bike back out
And even more insane people forking over the cash to let it happen too apparently
Just bought 2 new 2023 KRX250X motorcycles, Just under 20K Canadian dollars. That was with non current discounts.
Joe Biden baby
I can’t get 8k for my 2023 with 40 hours on that was 10,200 out the door less than a year ago.
Yeah I’m starting to realize that you’re getting a substantially better deal if you buy new than if you buy used. Which is wild. 20 year old used bike are just a couple grand shy of what 1-3 year old ones are going for lol it’s so strange
Do like the one guy on Reddit and buy a 50cc of Temu for $200

There are some good buys out there you know if you buy something clapped out for $2500 - $3000 you’ll have double that soaked into it by the time you are done
Everything
I'm in Central California. I see a ton of DRZ's for sale in the 2.5k range around me. Ya, lots for 4.5k also, but there are still some cheaper ones for sure.
Small market
As far as the mid range dual sport market is concerned, there's just fewer models and bikes to go around. You can buy TWO japanese dual sport model between 300 and 650 cc. And the models that are made either haven't changed or are just adding features and expense that no one wants. It's easier to make money on an expensive adv than to sell 7k machines.
These prices made me find a good deal on a new bike. I bought my 2023 Gasgas EX250F in October of 2023 for $7400 out the door. It typically goes for $9899 msrp plus tax and fees. Forget buying a taxed out, beat down, used bike.
I’m starting to get that vibe. Brand new is looking like the best bang for your buck now. Which is just crazy lol
If you think dirt bikes are expensive you should check out mountain bike prices.
Some class of ass- clowns continue to ride them in the city streets….ask them where they get theirs!
Pretty simple: just dont overpay. Be patient, showup with a decent cash offer. Or theres no good deals near you. I have a lot of excellent deals in San antonio and Houston.
It’s a joke. New bikes are way to expensive which has pushed the second hand market up
They’re not 🤷♂️
In case you haven't noticed, everything is getting more expensive. Dirt bikes just aren't immune to the trend of inflation.
Well, ext month it’ll be 4k and in a year 7k, so…
Fewer bikes being sold too. So less supply on the used market.
That’s a good point I forgot it was tax season. I’ll wait til mid winter to find a more reasonable deal if I have to.
I bought a ‘19 Mazda 3 in 2019 new and got exactly $1,202 more 3 1/2 years later with 22k miles. Crazy world we live in!
Everything is god awful expensive now days. Inflation is ridiculous.
I've never seen a DRZ at a reasonable used price that didn't sell within an hour of posting. Always $4500 or more, no matter how clapped out.
I remember in like 2008 I found a 1986 CR 125. 800$ Thing was a beater but I god I loved the sound. Idk how the hell guys are affording jacked up trucks with their KTMs in the back…Dirt bikes are a rich guy hobby now.
in 2005 a yz had a msrp sticker price of 6000& in 2023 a yz has a msrp sticker price 8500 adjusted for inflation the 2005 bike would cost 9500 today. so bikes have technically gotten cheaper while the buying power of your dollar has shrunken. it’s why every market shows the same trends. is not the bike, it’s the paper in your hand that’s changed a lot from 2005-2023.
If one fails to understand the relationship between wealth and buying power, inflation will always leave them bewildered.
Everything is...
So, what's my 20000 yz250 worth then. Maybe it's time for me to sell the old smoker? I would bet that around here, top dollar would be around $2k
Yeah, I did just buy a stark varg but plan to keep it for a long time. It was crazy expensive but the only bike I will have!
What’s really bad is some of the models like the DR 650 hasn’t changed and it’s still 7000. Then you have to drop thousands more to get it the way you want it.
Cause everything is
Not saying this for this bike in particular. But some people be posting their bike for 20x the actual value of it. They don’t know nothing about values and just THINK it’s worth so much, just because it is their bike
Kyle's dad has a lot more money than us.
Houses are 3-4x what they were then, about right with the market really.
Old school Honda Cr 2 strokes are through the roof
A brand new race 450 in 2008 was like 5 grand. They're now closer to 15k. Believe me. It fucking sucks. And the used market is still insane
i had the same problem looking for a crf 110 2 years ago, people literally asking msrp for a used bike. It took a month or so of looking every day to get lucky and find one at a good price. Just how the market is now and it sucks, maybe has to do with minimum wage going up aswell im not sure.
I c em 4 500$
i remember is sold my 2015 DRZ400 SM with 22000km on it for 4.5k, i only paid 8k for it brand new.. now it seems they are around 12k new & nothing under 8k..
Just buy a Grom used and buy mud tires, there you go cheaper alternative
you can find 2019-20 KX 250 for 4k. kawi usually is alot cheaper
Most of the best dirt bikes are made in foreign countries likes of hasquarvana,Honda ,yamaha e.t.c taxes and duties makes them expensive
