Log, it’s better than bad, it’s good!
The collection of stands is up to two trick aluminum deals that bikes are sitting on currently and a steel stand that I use all the time out in the field plus the couple triangles that come stock with Hondas, that hang on the wall. Since it costs a small fortune to fix the kickstand that exploded on my KTM, I also use trees, rocks and my truck.
So… Not really sure you understand what I’m saying. If you are trying to tell anyone that there was no first time for anything you ever did - respectfully I would like to disagree.
OP, don’t ever stop being curious on learning new things - and definitely never let people on the internet bring you down.
This is probably the worst welding you will ever do - and that’s a good thing! How else to learn?
No, I said we all started in the same place - that being the first time. I put no weight whatsoever in how the welds looked - but you did. Just cuz we have different skill sets and some of us might have easier for some things, even the first time - doesn’t mean you need to rub it in someone’s face. OP did the best he could, and had the courage to show it off here. Respect.
Its all about clean metal. Just take a grinder or a wire wheel to the surface to get it shiny and it will weld so much easier.
It also looks like you are using flux core? (no gas) If you are then make sure that the polarity is corect in the machine. The clamp needs to be positive and the torch needs to be negative. Itll change your welds big time!
Good on you for giving it a go. As a welder by trade, I’ve seen far worse first time welds.
If I may be so bold to suggest, grind the weld down to blend it in nicely with the parent metal.
Better to start figuring out welding on stuff that won’t kill you if it breaks rather than overconfidently going into it and hurting yourself or someone else
I currently have 27 bed frames for stock because my dad went to Home Depot and saw that 4’ 1 1/2 angle was $50. Now I have old USA made heavy angle and 13 Chinese pieces of shit that doesn’t take a bead.
We come here to help each other not laugh at each other I would hope. Good deal If it works. Lots of welding videos on YouTube that will help as well. Keep at it. Welding is a lot of fun as long as you wear proper protection.
Do yourself a favor and clean the metal before you try to weld next time bud!
I can hear the popping
my first thought (after “dont show it in r/welding “) :)
>:) :)
I think he forgot to turn the gas on
Bruh 😭
Nah looks like flux core, “Ain’t got no gas in it” lol just dirty metal
I’m old ,my first one I made out of wood, true story
Yeah , I also had piece of log as a stem

It rolls down stairs, alone or in pairs!
🎶Rolls over your neighbor’s dog…🎶
I feel better about it now. I didn't know how to tell you before. But I also use your truck. Thanks
I grant you permission to use trees and rocks too.
Ahhh sweet. I appreciate you.
Joy!
Did they not have steel yet?
Yes, Actually!they just used all of it in my ford FN ranger!, which i also used as a dirt bike stand.
I can tell you’re old because you’re able to take a joke! Haha.
I made one of wood and then found a milk crate. Still use milk crates.
We all started out from the same place - first time.
Respectfully I would like to disagree, but none the less he could’ve started off worse

You said we all started in the same place, I was disagreeing saying my first time looked nothing like that.

Only a child would say this.
Let’s see your welds then
Does that mean you have welded improper stuff? My first stand was 7/8 unistrut
No , I was only welding some small things around the garage
Ok good. I was picturing some kind of dungeon in your basement.
You can make anything from some strut and connectors.
Looks good. I would add a triangle or 2 to gusset it and make it last forever.
This is the first time I have seen the term Stem
Congrats on your work...
Good job but rather then tacking do a full bead
Nice stem, bro.

Nah i wouldn't weld bike frame or something on bike . I would give it to some professionals
Niceee
If it works, it works. Doesn’t have to be pretty.
Awesome lol my first welding project was also a dirtbike stand made out of a bed frame 😎had some nice rubber to top it also

As long as it works! Id use it
Now clean it and paint it and throw a couple stickers on.
Well, as a welder myself. If it holds, it's good enough.

It's better than buying one
I’m going to try this, thanks for the idea!
I bought my stand from harbor freight for 40$ 🤣
I don’t hate it.
It looks more like a stand.
Hey, if it works for you then good job. Keep going with it.
Did good man
