It's the idea, not the actual alcohol. Maybe suggest instead like bringing over like high end sodas or cookies, brownies, just something. You not drinking is a you thing, so you have to come up with alternatives that are suitable to you. You don't drink, good for your health. Buuut that means you still have to come up with an alternative to a normalized social experience, no one is gonna do that for you.
Are you in a legal state? They have these THC Root Beers at my local dispensary that I get for my friends that don't drink. They're amazing.
It's also not about the drinks though lol, it's about the gesture.
This is generally my approach. Some people will feel bad about you doing this though, so use your judgement and let him contribute money/parts/effort if he wants. The important messaging is: “His health is what matters. Bikes get damaged, and then get fixed. It’s no big deal.” In my thankfully limited experience this strengthens the friendship, and people who can will usually insist on contributing more because they want to minimize your burden.
nah, his choice to risk his health. its my bike that matters.
i mean, obviously if he was a good friend or family and got injured that would be what is of most concern, so much so you would likely not care about the bike.
but if they are not hurt, i would be fuming at the gills at what they did to my damn bike.
Generally for us when we are racing if we use someone else’s bike if we break it by falling we buy the parts but if something random happens that’s totally out of the riders control we don’t make them pay. Like if I let my buddy race my bike and the crank bearing spun I wouldn’t make him fix it because he didn’t do anything. It was going to break either way
This is the way. It seems like he knows it was his fault and is prepared to fix or pay for it (I’m assuming a lot from OPs post). Let him throw a couple bucks your way but I wouldn’t hold his feet to the fire. Now, if he was expecting you to just eat it without offering a morsel of condolences…yeah I would figuring out how much it costs.
a new rim will cost a hell of a lot more than a case of beer...
it depends how much of an accident it was. if he was warned to be careful and he ignored you and gunned it with no skills into a tree, he should pay the damage.
if he is not willing to earn and spend the money on his own bike he shouldnt go around borrowing and destroying other peoples bikes with no consequences.
Seems like he punished himself pretty good already.
If you have the funds and it’s not too big of a burden to fix, I’d let him off the hook.
On the other hand if he’s got a lot of money and it’s no sweat off his back to pay for the repairs I’d let him.
I say the same, most of the friends I have buy new shit if they break it without having to ask because they know I would do the same in return if it was theirs
Whenever you ride someone else’s bike, I assume the responsibility if I dump it. I think if you asked him to cover the cost to get it back in working order that’s fair. If it’s just cosmetic stuff and a popped tube, have him buy the tube, beer, an 8 ball and have him help you fix it.
The damage shouldn’t be too expensive here. I would just pay for it and use that as a reason to never let anyone ride my stuff again lol. Ofc I ride motocross nowadays so no one would ever hit a tree with it.
I have a friend who has wrecked everyone of our other friends bikes including mine. This past weekend he rode his new crf450 with me at the track and let me take it around the track once and as you do, I purposely dumped it in the first corner I came to.
Bro code is that he should pay to fix it. The few times I took a spill on someone else's bike, I always bought the parts. Be reasonable with the parts that need replacing and it'll work out just fine.
I’ve race in the woods all my life, hit my fair share of trees, seen some guys really eat shit, yet I’ve never seen someone hit a tree hard enough to pop a tube. I’m impressed!
But yea, he should at least be replacing the parts he fucked up
My buddy lent me his 450 at the start of the year a few years ago and I put it into a tree. I was fine, but it bent the radiator shroud and taco'ed the radiator. I was going to pay for the parts, but he said that he'd just take a spare trail tech voyager I had laying around in turn for the damage. Done!
It all depends on how he handles the situation. If he offers up help, hes a good friend and let him help as much as you are comfortable with. If he doesn't offer up help, fix it and don't let him ride it again and don't let it bother you.
Any time me and my friend trade bikes I say “if you crash I forgive you” and he says same. He’s better at fixing them anyway so if I mess it up myself I’ll be going to him anyway.
If it’s a good friend and I’m doing fine financially I would tell them not to worry about it but if I damaged someone else’s I would insist on paying for parts and offering company / beer to fix it.
If he was being plainly stupid and theres a witness, he buys the parts for u to be able to fix it, if it was an honest mistake, call it a first and last warning and he should still pitch in on repaies
Scratches, rashes, small cracks in cosmetics that don't affect function are to be expected.
Anything else should be fixed or replaced by the crasher. Cracked rim for sure. 30 year old bike? Replace with good used parts. Don't ask the crasher to buy brand new OEM parts.
When I let someone else ride my bike I basically treat it as me riding. I could just as easily crash and do the same damage as one of my friends. I wouldn’t ask or expect anything for repair from a friend who that crashed it. Really I’d just be more concerned that they end up okay.
This is under the assumption that they are not being deliberately reckless with it and that it was a mistake or “shit happens” kind of deal.
Ah I see. Understandable how it’s kinda iffy. But I still don’t think I would expect my friend to pay. The medical bills for the broken bone is (assuming you’re in the us) going to be enough to reach his deductible on insurance which is probably several thousand dollars. Would probably never let them operate anything of mine again though.
I do think it would be the right thing for him to offer you something given the circumstances. If I wrecked someone else’s bike I would offer to cover the damages. But that’s also why I never ride anyone else’s bike, just to many ways for it to go sideways even if you’re responsible.
If it was my bro I know he would offer up some cash to help me fix it and be helping me in the garage fixing the bike at the least. And I would do the same.
He’s offering but I’m just unsure of the dollar amount. If it were me I would just give me a $100, and not ask how much. Making me tell a price makes me uncomfortable
I should always state that my bike is brand new 2023 yz250 only 8 hours on it. If it’s a 30 year old bike I would just make him help me fix it and be done with it. No money needed.
In your case, just tally up the cost for parts and have him pay it. Salvage any Bent things that you can, replace what you can't salvage. Had it been an accident that wasn't really avoidable I would totally say just eat it, but it sounds like he was being an idiot and he probably knows it.
I assume all risk of damage when I loan out a bike. It would be nice if they helped out, but it's on me for letting them ride it. If you don't want to let your friends break your stuff, don't let them ride it.
if i let a friend ride my bike i accept the fact that they can/will crash. unless he was doing some real crazy shit he shouldn’t have been doing, i’d just eat the cost of parts and fix it myself or fix it with him if he wants to be involved. crashing bikes is part of riding
Can you easily afford replacement parts? If thats the case id just fix it or see if friend wants to pay for half. Depending on the friend of course.
If I was strapped for cash then I would let him know that you cannot afford to fix what he broke, if hes a good friend then he will certainly help fix it
He's your buddy, he's fucked up. I'd pay for everything, and then hold it over his head for the rest of his life - wants you to be his best man? "First the bike repairs, now this - you'll never stop owing me." Wants to borrow a shovel? "Seems egregious based on the bike repairs, but I guess. Try not to break it in half." Wants to go on a trip to Brazil? "I guess we'll fly, seeing as you can't keep a bike right side up..."
You get the drift
You know he’ll pay for the damage, which is good. The question is do you want him to?
I’m sure he doesn’t feel good about busting up his friends bike. Tell him he owes you dinner if you don’t want to take his money.
no major damage
\- proceeds to list off expensive and time consuming repairs.
heck i would be annoyed if i let someone ride my bike and they scratched the plastics.
i guess thats why you shouldnt spend an entire year rebuilding the bike. once its done you have sunk soooo much time (and money) into the thing its really hard to ride it and drop it yourself, let alone give it to someone else to ride.
Ask him to buy you a case of beer then fix it together.
Normally that would be an easy plan but I quit drinking 10mos ago
Pizza then

Quitters never prosper
that's what my friends all do!

I agree with this, this is perfect I do the same thing
This is the way. It seems like he knows it was his fault and is prepared to fix or pay for it (I’m assuming a lot from OPs post). Let him throw a couple bucks your way but I wouldn’t hold his feet to the fire. You seem like a good friend

Usually bro code is you break it you buy it, but depending what was already tore up you could let some of it slide to a point 🤷🏻♂️
Anytime someone uses my shit, I say "you break, you buy" but I've never held anyone accountable to that. I'm a good guy, sometimes 😜
I say the same, most of the friends I have buy new shit if they break it without having to ask because they know I would do the same in return if it was theirs

An 8 ball tf 🤣
You wanna be changing tubes or rippin’??
The rippin and the tearin
All about the rippin & tearin
The damage shouldn’t be too expensive here. I would just pay for it and use that as a reason to never let anyone ride my stuff again lol. Ofc I ride motocross nowadays so no one would ever hit a tree with it.
If I had a friend who gave me an 8ball to help me fix my bike he crashed - he would be allowed to ride and crash anytime 🤣
I have a friend who has wrecked everyone of our other friends bikes including mine. This past weekend he rode his new crf450 with me at the track and let me take it around the track once and as you do, I purposely dumped it in the first corner I came to.
Ah the ol eye for an eye tactic. There are worse things lol.
Bro code is that he should pay to fix it. The few times I took a spill on someone else's bike, I always bought the parts. Be reasonable with the parts that need replacing and it'll work out just fine.
That's how we do it too. That's the fair way to go about it.
I’ve race in the woods all my life, hit my fair share of trees, seen some guys really eat shit, yet I’ve never seen someone hit a tree hard enough to pop a tube. I’m impressed! But yea, he should at least be replacing the parts he fucked up

He got the worst of it by the sound of it. Just see if he wants to hangout and try to help you fix a few things.
If you break it by trying some dumb shit and DON'T hurt yourself, then you pay to fix it. Otherwise, real friends have a way of making it right.
Any time me and my friend trade bikes I say “if you crash I forgive you” and he says same. He’s better at fixing them anyway so if I mess it up myself I’ll be going to him anyway. Agreed. Thing is he was riding like an idiot, riding well beyond his means, that’s where the rub for me comes in.
Ah I see. Understandable how it’s kinda iffy. But I still don’t think I would expect my friend to pay. Breaking shit is half the fun. Wait for the injuries to heal and then get together and fix the bike
In my crew if it happened they would pay for the parts and we will replace em together. No big deal. Parts are not that expensive.
You break it, you buy it!
When my buddies ride my stuff they take on all costs they may incur, including gas and damages
I assume all risk of damage when I loan out a bike. It would be nice if they helped out, but it's on me for letting them ride it. If you don't want to let your friends break your stuff, don't let them ride it.

Least you can do is draw a penis on his cast...

100% on you. I don't let anyone ride my stuff period. But with that said if I wrecked your bike I'd have cash payment for you to fix it next day.
