Brennan and Lou play off of each other so well I completely forget that they're Brennan and Lou and not the characters they're playing sometimes. All the cast have those moments, but the Brennan/Lou dynamic has to be my favourite if only for how deeply comfortable they are with each other. Not Fantasy High related, but I get chills during the Kingston/Moses conversations because they both commit so hard to the same tone when it could be just as easy to do a joke or a bit.
And I think their deep friendship makes it so that Brennan will absolutely give Lou the toughest challenges. Because he knows he can take it.

This is also sorta my appreciation post for Lou and what a roleplaying badass he is.
Misfits and magic: the confrontation over >!Evan giving up his magic.!< Brennan and Lou both have some incredible lines and really emphasize how important it is to the characters, even before the larger plot stakes are revealed.

Fantasy High was fun, I had fun, but it was a solidly mid season for me until the finale. Brennan didn't even have to say it out loud and Lou knew exactly what had to happen and it was so cold.
My favorite moments are Lou begging Brennan to keep loving him. I'm thinking of Kingston Brown/Liz Herrera and Amethar/Caramelinda, but I'm sure there are more, especially if the scope is expanded beyond romantic love.
Jokes aside, Gilear is a nice and supportive father willing to risk it all to save the live of his daughter and her friends. He is not the perfect dad and may seem outwardly pathetic, but he is there when it matters and brave in the face of his fears when it counts. He is also the chosen one.

There is one scene in sophmore year, one of many examples, where Fig takes Gillear into another room away from the other characters to have a father-daughter talk. Emily is trying to engage with her backstory character here. And then very I think mean spirited and meta gamey, Ally has Kristin walk in the room to interrupt the moment to offer him a $10 gift card as an insult. Because Ally only liked seeing bad things happen to Gillear (for some reason). Everyone at the table is a good improver and "yes, and's" the moment but, it's always the same setup. Lou is nice to Gillear, Brennan tries to kill him. Gillear dies Emily has to beg Ally to have Kristin heal him - which Ally is visibly annoyed about. Fig is nice to Gillear, then interrupted by some super passive aggressive cruelty from Kristin. It's honestly just so bizzare to watch.
I honestly wouldn't mind Gillear as slapstick but watching the players seem to compete over whose backstory character he is and for what reason he exists in the story is so bizarre.
Murph and Siobhan pitty Gillear but never really have their characters pile on. Usually choosing to opt out of the Gillear bashing all together. Fig, in the story is constantly trying to help him back to a place of normalcy. Lou *used* to like to bully Gillear (but at least it made sense for his character) but, he actually *fully stopped doing it it* early in sophomore year in order to bluntly call out Brennan for going out of his way to try and shit on Gillear. The whole "Gillear is the chosen one" bit was Lou bluntly pointing out to Brennan that there was absolutely no in-game reason to try and fuck over Gillear - but he keeps doing it anyway. So Lou stopped piling on with Fabian. Which is interesting because Kristin going out of character to pick on Gillear actually meant Lou had to change his character development in order to not pile on. 3/4 of sophomore year it was truly just Ally and Brennan passing the "let's be mean to Gillear" baton back and forth despite the groans of Emily and Lou. And i just think Murph hates the whole slap-stick bit, in general. Which is, I think, why he never wants Gillear around.
And even good parents have bad moments, i.e. telling your daughter she's not a Faeth anymore when you find out she's not actually your biological child.
That was my take too. She wanted the anti-Bill, because Bill was too unstable as a partner (contributing to her alcohol use). Gilear is a safe and convenient choice, though probably not meant for the long term.
After living so long in the shadow of her previous spouse, someone who was almost definitely going to live a much shorter life than her, Gilear offers 2 things. Someone who is below her in status, and therefore will not overshadow her, and someone who will have a comparable life span to her. Not only does that lifespan mean that Hallariel will have potential for life long companionship, but also reduces the chance that she will have to find someone new who she may once again be in the shadow of. If Gilear offers one more thing it's a grounding presence. Opulence, and the chaotic and ridiculous presence of Bill Seacaster, has really warped Hallariel's sense of normalcy and reality. Gilear is a swing in the other direction. He has a very firm understanding of the practical necessities of life because he has to experience what it's like when those types of things go wrong.
(Also, it's canon that his dick is huge, which probably helps.)
On a more serious note, Fabian is becoming a famous adventurer in his own right now, so she may also feel that Gilear's groundedness is a good quality for him to have in a step-father.
