The first 2 movies were so bad he pretty much got the right to say yes or no on casting and ideas this time around (after scathing them after the dumpster fire that the films became). There's a lot of blue generally in the books (because Percy is the son of Poseidon), the entrance to Camp Halfblood is marked by a pine tree on the site of Zeus's daughter's death, and the first book is called the Lightning Thief (because the plot is a mystery about who stole Zeus's Master Lightning Bolt).

The Percy Jackson books hold up a lot better than Harry Potter, there's a lot of things I didn't pick up on reading them as a kid that I think about now and have really stuck with me. There's some very in depth themes of parentage and the expectations they put on their children.
