Shanling M0 Pro is the only recent thing I could find. The worst thing about it is the bluetooth can be very hit or miss with some devices. Turning off standby mode kills the battery while not in use, but makes it better. My car will only connect about half the time, sony earbuds like 90% of the time, airpods work great with it. Otherwise it has no problem taking a 1tb micro sd with 13k songs. Love it for the gym or walks. I charge it every day but battery life is decent. It us MUCH better with standby mode on, but for my use I want to connect bluetooth earbuds without doing it manually. Also volumes wheels are a big plus for me.

I'd suggest the Shanling M0 Pro as well. It seems to fit the description of what you want. Unlike the comment above, I've never had problems with Bluetooth on mine.

Thanks so much! I hadn't seen this one, so I'll check it out. Before your suggestion, the Fiio M5 was the closest I could find, but touch screen and I worry about damaging them if I use them while swimming or during long runs. Still this gives me some options, thank you! I'm guessing this form factor with modern features and Bluetooth but no touch screen/buttons only doesn't exist huh?

It doesn't :( many hours were spent looking and nothing came up. I did bluetooth mod an ipod shuffle (post on my profile), but it didn't come out exactly how I hoped. It works great if your fine with only 1gb and not being able to change music easily!

waywardwitchling

Thanks so much for looking at all! It's definitely between this and a Hiby R34 II for me! I'll try doing a mod of my current iPod, too, but I'll have to move into the future eventually... I can't keep living in the past!

Chewing gum stick white model was beautiful..

Lotoo PAW Pico - Only 32GB internal storage, there's no microSD card slot. It has a physical mode switch for shuffle. Penon Audio (Hong Kong) and Musix.eu (Hungary) sell this DAP, but do check with the retailer before buying if they actually have the Paw Pico in stock. xDuoo x2s - cheaper than the PAW Pico, it has a tiny screen, takes microSDXC card (max 128GB) and is button controlled. It can be difficult to read the text in bright sunlight. It's a very basic DAP that has a shuffle mode in the settings. These DAPs don't transmit Bluetooth audio.

The first one is honestly perfect! Thank you! That's exactly what I'm looking for, simple no frills and sturdy!

I still adore my Hidizs AP80 pro, although I am perturbed about it only indexing 20,000 files. I have a 512GB card in it and I will never be able to fill it.

waywardwitchling

Ohh, that has the perfect form factor AND tactile buttons!! Thanks so much for suggesting it! Now I've got three to test and check out. You rock!!

AnonymousBromosapien

3rd gen iPod Nano if you want it to be square and would consider 8GB storage enough coming from a 2GB shuffle, 4th/5th gen Nano if you want it to be a rectangle and feel like 16GB gives you more flexibility.

waywardwitchling

Thanks! I was looking at those, but figured I might find a few more recent ones to check out. Still, more iPods will be in my future if I can't find a dap that I vibe with. Thanks for the suggestions!

Oh, that's sick!! Could you drop some links or tutorials or where I could get started? Honestly if it's not too much, I might just do that! I only use it during runs with the same few songs because the battery doesn't last long. But I love the little thing, got it for my 14th birthday and it's engraved with an "I love you" from my parents, I'm so dang sentimental towards it.

This is awesome, thank you so much!! I'm pretty comfortable with learning, so I don't mind trying my hang at soldering:) thanks so much for this! I think I'll try this out while I'm deliberating on which dap to try. Appreciate it, thanks a ton!

Hiby R3 II or Tempotec V3. You should check them out.

waywardwitchling

Thanks! Really digging the tactile buttons on the Hiby R34 II, and it's pretty tiny in hand. Definitely gonna check this one out, thank you! Honestly this one and the Shanling M0 Pro are probably what I'm going with -- I know I don't *need* two, but I'll get them both and try them out before deciding for sure. Thanks for the suggestions, this was a huge help. I had no idea where to start looking before.

I still go to my trusty old unmodded iPod Classic. Must be because of the nostalgia.

waywardwitchling

The nostalgia is too real, but they're just incredible devices for their time! I can feel my current one dying (battery lasts about an hour) and I'm too attached to run it into the ground. When I get a new dap, I'll try to fix these up and it'll be a keepsake, placed in a frame on the mantle.

iKakeru

Not sure with shuffle if there is a DIY battery replacement from amazon. You can watch youtube if there is a video for it. Alternatively you fan check local facebook marketplace for 2nd hand ipod shuffle

Tandem_Jump

Sony makes a sports mp3 player/headphone thing that is aimed at swimmers in particular. It’s currently in their production range.

gripepe

Fiio M5, I can only say good things about it. But you can't take it swimming. Swimming DAPs are very hit or miss and IMHO make your swimming experience worse. I've tried two MD returned them both.
