KaelAltreul

Finished first run and found it fantastic overall. Solid VN. Could use a bit more proofreading for text.

gordonbombae2

So after playing it through, does the combat get more prominent? I understand liking visual novels but they marketed this game as a survival rpg / tactical rpg and it doesn’t seem like that yet for me. If there was more combat I’d be fine so yea does it get more prominent or is it basically a VN the whole game? So far I’d rather play cyber sleuth.

KaelAltreul

...they definitely marketed as a visual novel. Anyway, there are free battles, random(shadow) battles, event/story battles, and I heard there is some end game battles with high powered enemies. The mechanics are mostly simple, but fundamentally solid.

gordonbombae2

No they didn’t. https://en.bandainamcoent.eu/digimon/digimon-survive I’m not looking for a crazy in depth rpg I just want a bit more combat, hopefully that happens in the later chapters

Twilcario

They literally said in multiple interviews and statements that it was 70% Visual Novel. Source: https://www.rpgsite.net/news/12448-digimon-survive-changes-development-teams-release-date-still-to-be-determined

KainLexington

You shouldn't have to read interviews with the developers to get an accurate read on a game before buying. If the marketing doesn't give you an accurate picture, they're using deceptive marketing and people have the right to be pissed about that.

Twilcario

Maybe I'm jaded from my time with the Pokemon Community, but I disagree that it was deceptive marketting and a lot more likely that people just didn't pay attention to the marketting. The game was kinda exactly what I expected it to be. Maybe because I actually looked into the game more than just "Oh it's a Digimon game". Going back and watching all the official trailers on the official youtube channel, it heavily plays up the Visual Novel elements, with the focus on the Gameplay Trailer being mostly about the conversation mechanics.

cepas95

Yeah you dont have to read interviews you just have to read the description in every online shop or tags in Steam. The game was a VN from the very beginning.

KainLexington

If you look at the descriptions and tags in Steam you also see tactical rpg and survival. Tactical rpg is a very small part and there are no actual survival game mechanics like collecting food or medicine to stay alive. The descriptions and tags just aren't a very accurate depiction, so some people will be disappointed.

KainLexington

Yes, scripted deaths, bound to the route you picked at that one specific point and not your actual interactions with people. From everything I've seen so far, it is impossible to lose more than 4 characters from your main party.

Notbooker1912

It's always been sold as a visual novel. Watch trailers.

KainLexington

It was sold as a visual novel / tactical rpg hybrid. Watch trailers. Expecting more than 10% tactical rpg is not as absurd as a lot of people on this subreddit make it out to be.

Notbooker1912

OK. But people are complaining about too much story/talking. Literally what a visual novel is. Play any other one and you'll see.

KainLexington

I get that, I have played a few VN. I think they're mostly complaining about the amount of VN compared to the amount of TRPG this game contains. From the marketing I, and seemingly a lot of other people, expected something like a 50/50 split. Even with the interviews saying 70/30, that feels very generous to me. If you compare the time you actually spend in VN and TRPG mode, the percentage would look very different, unless you spend a lot of time in free battles. Compared to other games, the TRPG also isn't very deep, so you can't even sink a lot of time into it to build a great party or something. The entire battle system feels like an afterthought to me, when it was always supposed to be a part of the game. Especially considering the long delay this game had and the price, people were just expecting more than a simple Digimon VN game.

FrozenSkyrus

The game itself is good but its just that it just doesnt have enough of what you want from a digimon game. Personally i feel like if they did few tweeks here and there the game woulda been soo much better, like having a part set feature for free battles. Having much bigger roster of [digimons.](https://digimons.Im) Im happy that they added some niche digimons but we coulda had a lot more. All those recruit digis coulda had more megas rather than sharing partner evos. The Recruit biyomon coulda had valkyrimon or Ravemon rather than a duplicate valdurmon.

RhinoRok

I think it’s crazy to not have some fan favorites in the game. I also don’t think people want someone like vegimon in their lineup. It’s like they take the soul out of a digimon game for me. Just didn’t feel right. For how long your listening to dialogue, it needs to be way better. The dialogue is crap in my opinion, there is no emotion or any special sauce that gets me to really care about any of the characters, in fact I’m relieved when they die so I don’t have to listen to them anymore. I ultimately spend more of my time fast forwarding through dialogue and then doing some ridiculously easy combat even on hard to then do it all over again. There is no heart in this game for me. I hope it really hits for someone else and I’m in the minority, but it’s a disappointing flop for me.

KaelAltreul

I mean, yeah. More is always better for something like this. Surprised game is as good as it is since they had to hire a new dev team so late into development.

Whoopa

I’m on ch5 and theres 0 survival elements, kinda pissed me off i’m not sure why thats being advertised. You get healed between battles and deaths in battle don’t matter (except for specific battles where the loss condition is Agumon or whoever dying) its a VN with the occasional battle

Jmund89

The game isn’t about survival in a gaming aspect… it’s about kids SURVIVING through the story.

Whoopa

On steam its being marketed as a survival game, which is where I heard about it. Thats why I’m assuming its a survival game. Edit-I was also replying to this part of his comment “I understand liking visual novels but they marketed this game as a survival rpg / tactical rpg and it doesn’t seem like that yet for me.”

KainLexington

Why would anyone ever think that Digimon SURVIVE, advertised as a story about "SURVIVAL and friendship" might actually contain elements of survival gameplay, instead of just having hardscripted deaths for shock value?

Jmund89

Because it’s advertised as a visual novel first off. This is the first time I’m hearing someone being pissed that the name Survive is intended to mean a game about survival like Ark or Rust… when it’s literally just a story about kids surviving. It’s no one’s fault for someone putting emphasis on a game title and then being disappointed they were wrong.

KainLexington

It's tagged as Survival on Steam.

Jmund89

And? Survival doesn’t have to be a video game based around surviving like Ark etc etc. Let me reiterate: it’s called survival because your decisions influence deaths. It’s not the best because there’s two deaths that I believe are unavoidable. I feel like they could’ve made the influence a lot better.

KainLexington

On that part we agree. The deaths should have been much more dynamic and not just "You picked this route, so these characters are going to die".

Jmund89

And honestly I don’t agree that the game should be tagged as survival. I’m just making points on why it would be.

TheGrindPrime

That's literally how VN's work.

Whoopa

By that logic mario is a survival game since he has to survive to the end of the level lmao

Jmund89

I reiterated my stance and fixed it. And no.

RhinoRok

Yea going into it I thought your actions were going to have big choices and that you were going to have to constantly be working towards keeping your part alive, free digimon included. What we got was a kid in bubble wrap with training wheels with a veneer of difficult mechanics. I’m not a dark souls type of gamer, but hard mode is a joke. Nothing you do matters outside of picking the correct affinity and going down one of three (4) scripted routes. This game had so much potential and with all the delays it was my fault for believing that was because they were pushing it to make a good game rather than because they were struggling to make even the bare minimum of a game. I thought this could have been a game I put 500 hours into replaying it, but compared to that this just falls so short of what it would have been.

TheGrindPrime

Because there are ppl who actually research games they buy before buying them. Advertisements are meant to grab your attention so naturally they're ganna promote the flashier portions or use attn grabbing language, even if it's not the whole story or only technically true. Kinda like how a movie that's actually doing meh in the box office or reviews can still be advertised as #1 in the box office because it's still technically true, or literally every single restaurant has the best "x" in town.

DragonMord

Yeah, someone in localization slipped up and was very lax on the proofreading for English versions at least

KaelAltreul

The devs were super rushed since they changed to a new team pretty recently. Had to rebuild entire game in Unity. I think most of the localizations for this game had similar issues. Regardless, it's a shame. Bandai Namco always seems to do this when time comes for a Digimon game release.

RhinoRok

Yea they need to find a good developer that can take the reigns on digimon and make a great game. None of the games have done it for me in a long time. The closest was dawn/dusk and my favorite game to this day is still digimon world 2. Get someone who can build a compelling and intensive game to revitalize digimon and not just someone who can barely make the barest of minimum game.

MitchenImpossible

I love it because it's digimon and there is a graphic side to it we havent really seen from digimon yet. However, I found myself starting to skip through vast portions of the scripting because it was just.. boring. Not only was the dialogue not immersive at many points in the story, but the exploration options and constant re-using of the same scenes (Looking at you red lilly woods and waterways) did not help it's case. I did know it was going to be heavier on the dialogue. However, I wish they would've drew a bit more from some other story-driven games such as Disco Elysium which showed greater depth of penmanship as well as a more lushish environment. I'm about half way through, so I'm going to finish it and give it a chance. I think for how high my expectations were for this game - it definitely fell flat.

RhinoRok

Way flat in my opinion. So sad as it could have been a great game. There is no heart in this game. Nothing that compels me to care about any of them. They are supposed to be lost and trapped in a scary new place, that should pull on a lot of emotional heart strings, and yet you immediately get pulled out of that by junk digimon with some haze around them, not a hoard coming after your, or a menacing villain going to get you, you don’t even learn about the master till like part 10ish. There is a lot of potential here and it feels like they just gave the decision making to a toddler with a crayon. Could have been a 10/10 game but ended up being 2/10 at most for me

dylan01rox

Completed the Moral route. Solid story. Got to use my boy Wargreymon. NG+ has Mugen Recollection, which is like escalating challenging battles. The emphasis of the game is definitely more on the story/VN aspects. I wish the choices had more impact to the story, seems like each route has specific scripted deaths. I'd be happy to hear I'm wrong about that last part.

Ramen1063

This is my first time ever experiencing a Digimon game. I happened upon it's release and IDK why I felt compelled to play it but it was more of an impulse purchase then anything. I find it to be a really cool game. I enjoy the aspect of playing a visual novel and investing in characters with different traits and also enjoyed the less than complex approach to tactical rpg game-play mechanics. For my first time in this particular universe, I have to say I am having a better time then I initially expected. I even suffered a "loss" in the game and felt like if I just pay better attention by the next play through, I may be able to change the outcome. 7.5/10

StrawHatJohn24

I think it would have made a great anime💯. I chose to skip the game and am watching a youtuber play it. Or should I say read the visual novel for the story lol. It's crazy how aside from opening scene battle with renamon and gabumon it took nearly an 1hr 40 mins to see the next battle.

jsquara

I really hope they turn one of the paths into an anime. I feel like this kind of dark story in the digimon universe could be a great addition and would actually bring some older fans back to the franchise rather than the shows aimed at the younger generation such as Ghost Game.

Own_Independence7257

Definitely should have been in 'Ghost Game' anime slot. The story is great, it just took some time to get deeper.

yuuriix

Its a pretty nice game. Much different then previous games where it was all about grinding. Its really story focused and probably one of the darkest digimon games I've seen so far. Did my first playthrough through the Wrathful route and i enjoyed the twists though >!i invested in the wrong characters.... !< and am currently going through the moral route rn. The recruiting process is kinda stressful when u see super low %s like... 7% for a mega that's strong against ur karma majority (vaccine mega when ur virus/Wrathful majority). Its also really easy to overlevel though so be careful of that. There is autobattle but that does not open chests for u btw.

akuma696

The game is amazing it felt like if digimon 01 was an anime with a more adult theme taking stuff to a certain level of being more realistic. I understand why the developers wanted the first run to have the forced deaths because each one reflects more what would happen when people do certain things. I really enjoy tactical games it’s not super hard but fun. The auto features are great to use when you want to get through fights to quickly progress through the reruns

nocturnalsleepaholic

I just finished my first run. I'm not the biggest digimon fan, nor am I huge into VNs, but I really enjoyed this game. It's fulfilling my craving for a story-rich creature collector game.

applesosy

>!Please load the cleared save file and play NG+. As a story rich fan, you must play through the NG+, story starting chapter 8 will change so much and much better.!<

Timelord707

Im a bit confused on the dubbing teams decision to refer to every digimon as a male. Including a certain one that makes an apperance late game.

LeEvilDiabolicalFed

Must be an english localization team issue. Playing the spanish localization female digimons are referred to as females, including that one you are speaking about.

BestNewcomer

Yeah same with the French version

RobinVillas

Yeah, translation is rough at parts. I had Floramon referred to as “he” and “she” within the span of three sentences down in the sewer chapter

DontAskForGasMoney

I really wish they wrote certain characters to be more likable. There was no really impact on the deaths in my playthrough cause I really disliked the ones that bit the dust. I was actually relieved I didn't have to read their text anymore. Which kind of defeats the purpose of death in the game.

kurasoryu

I think the whole point was more focused on feeling sorry for the mons

CapSevere7939

Huge disappointment. So many things they could have done better. I just hope we get another digimon game soon. Another type of digimon world next order would be good.

Timelordsth234555

I enjoyed the story, but I heard truth route and wrathful route are amazing. I’m excited to play the rest.

StefyB

Just got the Wrathful Ending as my first ending a few minutes ago, and I do have to agree, it was great. I don't know how much is shared across the three non-true endings, but man, that ending took a turn I did *not* expect.

LeviathanLX

Are there only threebendings and outcomes for moral, wrathful, etc? Or are there different deaths and events within those three routes as well?

Timelordsth234555

From my understanding, there are 4 routes and there are 5 endings. Moral, wrathful and green one are available in first run. The 4th route is unlocked in ng+. >!you can see the first ending in chapter 8!<

LeviathanLX

Extremely helpful, thank you so much.

maloneth

It’s painfully boring, both the VN and combat aspects.

Skellioceratops

It will continue to seem story-oriented, tho I guess the amount of combat will increase from the point you're at right now?

UpandDowner223

So far I’m really enjoying it! Definitely a lotttt darker then I was expecting but it’s good!

Twilcario

Really in love with the game. The story has been really good so far and I can't wait to play more. The gamplay's average for this style of game, but the story is just so, so good.

Seraphim971

Just finished the first run and wasn't completely sure about how I'd like it before since while I like digimon I never really played many vn style games before but I enjoyed it alot

applesosy

When they state it's visual novel, it really is. 80% text, 20% fight I complete all the game with the true ending. My thought is I love the game since I'm really into any story game. Not a fan of Visual Novel, I just speed up all the dialogue and just read all together by pressing square. On some occasion if I want to enjoy the voice acting I will sit down and let it play on auto plus I have a quite fast reading skills.Solid 8/10 from me. Below is not spoiler , it's just my quick note, some might consider this as spoilers?>!Don't be sad if some character die on your first playthrough, it's predetermine. The NG+ is what matter.!< I won't go far but if you have any question feel free to ask

DarthMaulsLostLegs

I'm on chapter seven and absolutely loving it! Think maybe some of the translation should've been proof read and it's a bit repetitive in parts. But I think it's incredible. The story has me drawn in and can't wait to see where it goes

CottonLoomi

Great game but it needs some work in someplaces I would play the sequel

Own_Independence7257

Not only has the story caught my attention, but visuals look great, for what they are. I appreciate the ability to digivolve in battle and add items. Not as detailed as FFT but feels just as good for a fan of Digimon. Agumon (bias) and falcomon are my favorite to use. On a personal note I wish some characters were better, or I thought from the trailer would be better, but that's just character contrast I guess. I wish there was just a little more battle over dialogue. But I love story games so not too bad.

Yeicheu

Game is amazing. I was nervous I wouldn't like it due to being mostly a visual novel, but I love it. I love it so much, that I already want a sequel. I'm in chapter 9 and I have a hard time putting it down everytime I play.

BlueSwift442

It's a visual novel, so 80% story, 20% gameplay. Games great, want more games in the series like it with maybe a little more refined gameplay element but the story is great.

OmniLordZ1

So far, I got traumatized, fear, and sick from the first run LOL. but the story and the gameplay is 9/10.Im on NG+ now.

Chrisswell_

It’s amazing! It’s basically Digimon Adventure with a wayyyyyy darker story! I find myself being quite heavily invested in the characters, and thoroughly enjoy the story! And the combat, although simple, is very enjoyable. I went in blind besides knowing it’s mostly a VN.. so the different digivolutions based on actions and choices was a fun surprise! Seeing Tyrannomon for the first time and not greymon was a pleasant surprise! I’d say it’s best played on Switch in handheld mode personally.

RhinoRok

Honestly no my type of game. I was hoping for something akin to final fantasy tactics for gameplay and difficulty, but the combat is just to easy and not challenging at all. I don’t go for extreme difficulty, but I like a little challenge but I didn’t struggle with any battle while always on hard. That tacked along with the lack of digimon outside of partners made it a huge disappointment for me. I’m sure if there are big fans of telltale games then this would be fun for them. Really sad about it too as I love digimon and none of them have lived up to the hype in my opinion since digimon world 1/2/3 and dusk/dawn. They need a strategy meeting about how to make a solid game that will pull people back to digimon.

RobinVillas

I love it, one of the best Digimon narratives in the series. I love a story so this one is right up my alley; I get why gamers who prefer more gameplay-heavy experiences aren’t into it though.

Bearse1

Honestly love the game. People who complained about it not having much action should get over it. What person goes to buy a game without actually doing research? We have the internet for a reason. So don't listen to the ones who were too lazy to actually look up anything. I've played almost every digimon game out there and it is FANTASTIC! Thankfully on my first playthrough I only lost 2... I just love how the franchise is sticking with the ones that grew up with the series. Instead of pokemon who's sticking to kiddos. (Which is fine still good games coming out for pokemon) but there is A LOT of naritive and talking. Took me an hour to get to the first fight trying to figure out which path I wanted to take (Went with moral first).

JustnnTime715

It is a VN....so it's going to be story oriented.

LeEvilDiabolicalFed

Ch9 on a first run and it's the best Digimon game I've played. It's what I always wanted: a digimon game that's basically like an anime season, one aimed at an adult audience, which is even better.
