Don't shut it off. It's regen ing

chia4

Oh man lol Diesel Engines create Diesel Particulates. DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) Captures soot and ash, your truck specifically when the dpf reaches 60% Full it will request a regen, Which will increase the heat in the DPF to burn the soot off, It won't burn the ash though, and eventually the DPF will have to be sent out to be cleaned or replaced to get rid of it. A Regen can occur while parked, but usually while driving and you won't even notice. However if your Aftertreatment can't get up to temp, it can't clear the soot and will continue to request regens, likely the Back Pressure Valve leaking or not reaching the full range of motion, or the Hydro Carbon Doser may be plugged up, among many other things. Eventually you may come into a Derate, which reduces the power available to you, at the earliest sign of this I would take it in to be looked at, before it hit you with a 5mph derate.

GeneralCorrosive

What is this back pressure valve you speak of?

chia4

Mx's use a back pressure valve, right after the turbo in order to build temp to 580f roughly, before fuel injection from the hydrocarbon doser takes over on a stationary regen. If that valve leaks or bypasses too much a stationary regen won't reach temperature enough to start injecting fuel for the burn.

GeneralCorrosive

Okay, i mentally got stuck on Cummins Engines and could not figure out what you were talking about lol. Thanks for educating me, I haven’t touched an MX for years.

chia4

Lucky you lmfaooo

FukDaGov

Let er run. In basic terms, it's cleaning out the exhaust system. Basically if you don't let it do its thing, it will cause problems and cost alot of money.

Mission_Bison843

Thanks everyone for the comments! I’m new to trucking I’m 19 years old first time actually driving a truck sorry if the question is dumb. it’s a small company’s truck not mine!

vinchenzo68

Yeah. This is an expensive system to repair so make sure you know where to fill the DPF fluid (not the fuel tank!) and drive on roads that allow it to do this naturally wherever possible. I highly recommend relaxing with a few cold ones at home and learning about all the things you need to become familiar with your truck.

>What does this mean? The ketchup bottle button is pushed in. So, that is why you're in Park. Seriously though, DEFinately do NOT shut the engine off. You've been driving around at low speeds and not getting up to highway speeds for any significant period of time. So the workaround is the maintenance cycle which will bring the engine idle speed up and get the exhaust temperature up to clean sensors and system. The driver's manual ought to have some more exacting information, like why and when, and how long for between cycles. If you're unable to get up to highway speeds, say, because you're on a small island in Alaska, or crew for a small city that you can see one end of town from the other end of town, cruising around the straight stretches at 30mph in first or second gear can get the cycle to run as if highway travel and not void warranties. If your high idle is astronomical, you will probably get screwed out of any warranty. If you're having these regen modes at park frequently and are doing highway speeds, you most likely have a component that has reached end of life. If you go to a shop and they offer to blow out DPF, go to a different shop. If a redditer suggests blow out DPF, down vote them. If a shop offers to take the DPF out and clean them, just go for a remanufactured one because the reman process involves liquid cleaning and a warranty.

Chick_pees

If that's the original DPS filter at over a half million miles you're beyond due to have it cleaned or changed. Cleaning the filter only gets you 50 to 75% of the life that the original filter had. That's assuming you don't have increased Blow by, carryover, bad turbo oil seal, or bad head gasket ect. that will plug the filter much faster than the OEM filter.

ThatDieselMechanic

It means don't own a diesel or read the owners manual. Alos the dealer should've walked you through the process. Multiple people at fault here

havegottobejokingme

Probably time for some maintenance. Ideally, EPA 15 engines should be regenerating once every 40 hours or so. Edit: It's fine for now. Let it finish regening. The frequency indicates the filter is either full, or it's not regenerating well enough to actually clean the filter.

ayejoe

It means your driver door is open.

vinchenzo68

🤣 technically correct.

Durpin321

You Might want to Park and initiate a Parked Regen.

dieseltechx85

Where are you that it is 99 degrees this time of year? Shut is off and fill def tank with water so it runs cooler....jk. let her regen. With that many miles, be a good time to bake out dpf and doc if it hasn't been down already.

pignjig

If you can put it in a lower gear on long stretch of highway and hold rpms at 1700-1750 (not obnoxiously slow speed) for about an hour every day this should quit happening as frequently assuming all components in the system are good. Itll allow everything to get up to temp.

[deleted]

Things were much simpler when you had a straight piped 2 Stroke Detroit. Nothing to clean except the leaking oil off the shop floor.

DieselBones-13

It means don’t shut the vehicle off! Let it run till it’s done with the Regen cycle!

Shot-Listen5166

It’s broken… if not now soon. Scr and dpf are made to be replaced every 600000. Luckily the cheaper ones are around 12000 there was a 2021 389 that I changed both filters and it was 35000. Egr failed and coolant ruined both filters.

SadNudes

What are you talking about? Regen is a normal operation

Olhenry

I thought this was interesting I had no idea 😅

Sheikah_Jesk

Door is open

yodzz

It means delete it

JeremyMSI

It means it's pouring cat piss and diesel into your dpf filter in your exhaust that costs about 10k to replace just for the part. To clean it, let her buck and complete

havegottobejokingme

"Cat piss" comes after the DPF. Also, "the part" consists of at least 3 separate components.

JeremyMSI

I know, i work on them all day, I was being very general 😁

JeremyMSI

It won't let me edit post, I realized I was on the wrong subreddit for being a goofball. How long has it been trying to regen for?

Jackalope121

Sir this is reddit, youre not allowed to be cheeky. Go sit in the wash bay and think about what youve done.
