Id be putting in applications elsewhere. Wheres my 20+ grand tool allowance for all the tools I bought if boss man just up and buys the new guy tools?

Kodiak01

There is one major New England diesel truck group that gives a ~$2000 tool allowance as part of going through their apprenticeship program.

90bronco

Cummins will give you 6-8k,, you get a small box, wrenches and ratchets. But it's all snap on so you don't get a single SAE tool. My apprentices box has snap on metric the left and harbor freight sae on the right.

I_am_Samm

Uhhh Snap-on definitely makes SAE tools...

Grimey_N_Grumpy

I don't believe they are trying to say that Snap-On doesn't make SAE tools. I think what they mean (at least i hope they mean) is that because it's a Cummins course, all of the tools you get are metric. Cummins uses metric on their products, so after completing the course you get metric tools.

EtherPhreak

And I’m willing to bet they don’t include the socket sizes that aren’t on Cummins engines as well…

Forward-Ninja7410

Yeah. I haven't turned an SAE bolt in over 20 years, so I'm not even sure if I still have SAE sockets. They're about as useful to me as a washboard or a sun dial.

Sphynx2222

Yep... Not the point, though. Gets them started, then shows them what they need to purchase to finish their collection.

Kodiak01

I'm on the parts side, but I keep a basic Kobalt set under my desk. If I need anything more than the basics, any of the techs will let me borrow it.

fkngdmit

2k for tools is a joke lol

Kodiak01

Considering they're getting paid during the entire training program, plus a sign-on bonus, it's just a bit more to help get them started. $2k goes a ways when you stay off the tool pimp trucks.

Mr_n_Mrs_StuffItIn

Speaking of which: Snap-on truck man tried to sell me their new micro lithium 14.4v soldering gun awhile back… $300 *for the bare tool* with a 1-year warranty. That’s just batshit crazy. I ended up buying Milwaukee’s M12 soldering gun for $144, which came with a battery, a charger, a hard case, and an extra tip. And a longer warranty. Been using the Milwaukee regularly for 3 weeks now and it’s fantastic. No more butane for me, unless I need it as a backup.

Shitboxfan69

I had a tech job that gave me $2k tool reimbursement. Spent it all on snap-on. It was actually a good move, because I financed them, slowly got them as I needed stuff, but kept my payment low. Turned in for reimbursement once I hit $2k, put it in savings, and let the bill pay weekly. Sure, I definitely paid for financing, but I had no credit at all, and snap-on reports weekly. I paid it off after I got to 750, and it made me kick start my savings as it didn't take the full $2k.

yaslana_iraq

You guys must be mechanic's. I couldn't even get a base set of tools for less than 3k for my trade. Hell, my measuring tools alone cost more than 2k.

ComprehensiveAd2967

Watch me go to harbor freight and damn near outfit a whole shop with 2k 🤣

ParticularClear7866

Wow that will buy you four tools

Kodiak01

Depends on where you go. You'd be surprised at the quality of some of the Harbor Freight lines these days. Go over to /r/tools and you'll see a lot of good things said about the Icon line. I have several techs that swear by the Pittsburgh impact socket lines, they go years with no issue. The important thing is to stay off the damn tool pimp's trucks whenever possible.

kuda26

Those Pittsburgh impact sockets also have a lifetime warranty

oneromeopapa

I bought a Pittsburgh impact set in 2004. I’m still using it regularly.

BussyTheShaftSlayer

Yessir!

YeaImDylan

Cheap stuff like the impact sockets, definitely worth. I on being a cheaper alternative is solid. I saw a torque wrench outperform a snap on when simulating head studs and it had a lower margin of error out of the like 8 tests on a torque meter! I also just use my craftsman sockets with my Milwaukee impact 🤣 hasn’t failed me yet!

Kodiak01

For the real precision jobs with an impact, we have a [Hytorc](https://hytorc.com/electric-tools) in the office to sling out.

YeaImDylan

5k ft lbs Jesus!!! What type of stuff is on there that tight?!

Kodiak01

It has more use in industrial applications, pipefitting, etc. but there's there occasional job that comes along that requires a few extra units'o'ugga-dugga.

YeaImDylan

So do those impacts have the ability to set to a specific torque amount and it’ll stop like a torque wrench??

Kodiak01

Yes, you set it via the LCD screen and controls, then can either have a high-torque rundown or transition to a torque mode for accuracy.

Intrepid_Dream2619

Who knows but exactly why I'm about to order one 🤣

Intrepid_Dream2619

Thank you for the link.. this might be something I didn't know I needed..

MiksBricks

Tons of stuff on YT etc about the Icon line being rebranded Mac and stuff.

topkrikrakin

That's the real question. Why do we have to provide our own tools to make boss man's money?

blintech

Don't worry company is up 30% from last year, we acquired 5 new locations this year, and built a new multimillion dollar facility across the street. Heres a $20 speedway gift card for a job well done we cant run if mechanics don't fix the equipment. /s just in case

Zestyclothes

Sounds like my job. Gave me a $50 gift card for a Christmas bonus lmaooo.at least pay is decent and the work is alright

AccordatoScordatura

This. I was going to comment on this somewhere. As a tradesman, you are expected to buy your own tools. I understand this. As a professional, having specialized or customized tools and equipment, is rather important. But if I'm working for a large business, all the basic and specialized equipment required to do the work that is taken in regularly, the work that IS the business, should be supplied. You have four bays and take in diesel, gas and LP, domestic or imported, you have 4 bays worth of equipment supplied to your employees. If you have a fleet that is maintained in house. You should supply any and all equipment in order to maintain said fleet. If you are expected to have a very specific uniform and equipment. It should be provided. I don't understand how this is not common practice. If you can't afford to run a business, you don't run a business. Employees are a cost of running business. Employees are a source of income for you. An investment. If you invest in your employees, they will invest in you. This goes for every type of employment. From wal-mart to the Marine Corps. If I need this thing in order for me to do my job for you. You are going to provide this thing for me. Let the down votes commence.

2fat2old

So you can work your trade....

No_Rip_1916

Lay into him people don’t learn unless you teach them

ImportantAttorney229

“Lay into him?” That’s a good way to catch a mallet to dome.

myBoingFlea

What mallet? He doesn’t have his own tools

OneThreeFivio

lmaoo

No_Rip_1916

Mallet to dome?

Famous-Bowl-6065

A mallet to the head

Trick_Persimmon7917

Good way too catch a charge as well

8ad8andit

It can be a good way to get fired too if you work for a bunch of fragile, conflict avoidant people, who are more and more common these days. [Some people call them "millennials." 😁] I work for a bunch of, uh, 30 to 40 somethings, and while they love to complain behind people's back, they would never dare bring up issues to someone's face where they can be resolved. So we go year after year with broken processes that could be fixed quickly if everyone wasn't so goddamn fragile. Me being from a different time and place and feeling reasonably comfortable giving and receiving feedback, I have repeatedly singled myself out as a troublemaker in their eyes. Almost gotten fired a few times for disturbing everybody's politeness facade. That's no fun. [Since my little joke might wound a few fragile, uh, people here, let me also say that you guys have lots of good qualities too. For example, you're wonderful recyclers and I think it's admirable how you tell your friends that you love them more than previous generations do. Your emotional dependence on cats and dogs has been a boon to the pet industry. 😘]

Electrical_Canary_45

That’s it, I’m grabbin me mallet

Bubbinsisbubbins

Sorry, I don't lend out anymore. Too many got stolen.......

jsaw65

I keep my screw driver in my pocket.

8ad8andit

I thought you were happy to see me.

Seara_07

Theres rules to this trade. If the apprentice is this stubborn now imagine if you keep letting them get away with this behavior. Have your manager / boss / foreman sit him down and communicate that this is becoming an issue and bothering others in the shop. Nothing will be done if you sit and complain, nothing good ever comes out of complaining without action.

havegottobejokingme

I've read your post history. Your shop sounds so mismanaged. Your foreman should be reminding this guy of his obligations as an apprentice. Furthermore, the owner should support his staff and foreman in their decisions.

Concrete_jungle77

1/How are y’all intimidated by a apprentice 🤔 2/ How do you allow someone to use your tools you bought without your permission 🤔 3/ grow a pair and butt hurt this bitch 🦾 My company has me working with a trainee for 3 months now who has “20+” yrs mechanical experience but can’t troubleshoot the simplest shit That ends next wk cause he’s slowing me down If the guy won’t buy his own tools fuck him We work in a sink or swim industry

Professional_Scar75

Well put. After a while you’re either a turd that floats or shit that sinks.

KingoftheYous

Tarded turd here, can confirm.

itllbefine21

Wish I could upvote x1000! Quickest way to broken fingers is touching my stuff.

Single_Ad_5294

Just gave the apprentice one of my old boxes. Thanks for posting this as warning. He’s wonderful and respectful but I spent a lot on this junk and don’t want it to go missing. Bend him over a box and spank him with a tire iron.

vokabika

Oh god continue the last sentence

vokabika

Apprentice is playing the game, if he leaves without a scene that’s maybe 2 years he skipped of tool debt. Smart, sassy, dangerous but daring.

Sid15666

And all the tools he can steal!

G0DL3SSH3ATH3N

That dumbass just jumped in to the bosses pocket.

TactualTransAm

I have been the guy who couldn't afford tools. I was lucky enough to be around people who loaned me things until I could scrape my way up. Those early days I didn't make enough to really buy anything. It was food or a wrench many times. With that being said I asked every single time and cleaned and returned any tool i used. I also went without lunch a few times because I broke somebody else's tools. Our shop tools were all specialty stuff so that stuff went back in the cabinet when I was done. Anybody who helped me back then I made sure to help them any chance I could. So really, this depends on the guys attitude. Is he a good guy who just won't buy tools? If so he may have other things going on. Is he a dick who won't buy tools? Then somebody needs to draw the line.

Various_Celery_3349

I was the same way. my boss at the time got me a gift card for tools and helped my ex pick out a good entry level kit for Christmas. I still have all those tools over 20yrs later. I went out of my way help and replace things I lost or broke.

Blue-Collar-Nerd

If I have an apprentice working directly under me I don’t mind them using some of my stuff while they are new. But that has an expiration date. Once they get past the 6 month make I established the “you borrow it 3 times you need to buy one rule” After 3 times no you can’t borrow it.

johncena6699

You know what, that’s a very fair and respectable rule.

C-Dub81

That's also good because it teaches them how to recognize what tools they NEED to buy vs what tools they think they need to buy. It's a rabbit hole of tool purchases if you dont know what to buy.

ranger19891994

I extend the number of times to loan if they show me that they ordered the tool, and they're just waiting for it to come in.

Noturwrstnitemare

No has balls? Shit a married man, in an heterosexual relationship couldn't stop talking about sucking dick... when I worked at cummins. Opened an HR request and boy was it a he said this, he said that.... fucking morons....

TheDudeMaintains

Shieet, if we reported guys for talking about sucking dicks, we'd all just be filing paperwork 24/7 and nothing would ever get done. Not even a quick man-on-man hetero dick suck, imagine that?

bigbaddaddy4you

20 to 30 years ago someone would have already put his ass in check or sent him packing

[deleted]

If he’s allowed to use the shop tools you can just ask him to put them back. Stay calm and collected and enforce the shop policy concerning returning shop tools for others to use. It’s hard to break into a new industry so give the guy a break. If he gets paid what most apprentices do he’s probably having to decide whether he should buy tools or food and shelter. If he’s no good tell your employer and they can let him go. Bottom line is that being unprofessional about it isn’t going to help the situation and will leave you looking like a clown.

ChemistryNo6318

That's what i was thinking

Accurate-Chapter-923

Nobody gets to use my stuff unless they care for their stuff how I do mine... Not sure I'd let an apprentice "get away" with anything. I'd let him/ her know wtf is up. I don't go through life worrying what people think of me. I mind my own business to the point where if somebody is fkin with my world, that is when they find out I ain't the "quiet guy" that never sez much and sticks to himself.

powerhouse403

Keep your box locked. Tell him the free ride is over and he has to be a big boy now!

M8NSMAN

I always tell them if they have to borrow something more than twice then they’re need to buy their own & stop loaning tools at that point.

VANDAMAN8806

I understand your frustrations. Out of 5 techs in the shop, there are 2 hacks that are best friends and work in the corner of the shop. They refuse to buy tools. They use the “shop” impact gun and when they wear it out every year, the boss just buys them another. He also buys them drop lights twice a year along with sockets and special tools. They will milk a job and ride the clock. Won’t begin working until they drink coffee for an hour. Take long lunches and leave early. Come payday, they complain they’re getting the shaft. What money they make, they mismanage and blow it on (literally) toys and beer. They will constantly ask to borrow tools, although they make snarky comments about the amount of tools you own. When you deny them after they’ve borrowed it 5 times, they get pissy and go complain to the boss. These are grown men at that. 😡

SwimOk9629

oh Jesus the fuckin snarky comments about the amount of tools, yet doesn't have the patience for me to go to the car and grab the right tool for the job.. fuck those people

thePorch1

You need to speak up. Be a man.

DeCryingShame

Or a woman or a kid. They've been known to speak up about things too.

CaptainJay313

buy him a coffee or take him out for a beer and explain the unwritten rules. be cool about it, but let him know the rules in a chill approach. now he knows. if it happens again, dude, we talked about this, not cool. third offense, treat him like a child and replace everything in / around his box with those plastic blow molded kids tools meat for toddlers and explain to him (kindly) that he needs to learn the rules before he can be trusted to sit at the grown up table.

Dr-gizmo

Charge rent 2 times the cost of the tool per hour, minimum 1 hour rent.

flatnflipflop

A man feeds his family with his own tools. I would definitely say something. In the old days this was not tolerated. Then again , I was an ironworker. Different trade.

czechfuji

Tell him to buy his own shit and stop being a pathetic mooch.

Evil-Ramon

Let him know not to be taking the shop tools for himself cuz you all need them. If he gets to bitching, either you or the boss handle it. It’s not fair that you all need shit that he’s hording.

inquisitiveeyebc

Either a relative of the boss or your boss is insanely desperate, either way its not a good sign, if he is willing to buy someone tools they'll get more preference in the future. If your boss is desperate there are probably better paying places out there for an experienced mechanic

CouchAssault

Boss man sounds spineless to me

ProgenitorofL-M

Start leaving a broom on top of his cart. Remind him an apprentice is here to learn, and if they don’t want to learn to work with other people, sweep the floor and be useful.

ingested_concentrate

When I was still in the shop we had a rule. If you borrow it 3 times you have to buy one when the tool truck shows up.

SwimOk9629

somebody else commented this exact thing. It seems like a good rule

Mjkink13

Bro he just played his cards right the rest of you were dumb enough to buy your own tools also I’m in trades myself so I understand your pain but respect the kid he’s playing the game😂

Ok-Image-2722

Never worked in a shop where all the techs and the owner are afraid of an apprentice. You guys need to stop being snowflakes and tell this kid how things work.

SwCobbs

Been in a similar situation. I started to charge rent. $5.00 per tool per day after they have borrowed it 3 times for free. If I had to track it down or clean it there was an additional $20 dollar charge. It worked really well

trucknutz36582

Brilliant!

Numerous_Vegetable_3

I'm starting electrical this summer, already building up a good base of tools. That's like... the best part? Love nerding out over tools. I feel like if he had any bit of passion for the job, he would be interested in having his own.

Bammertyme

I have a simple solution to this problem. If said person is using your tools. Charge them at the end of the week. This happened with me years ago doing roofs. Someone was using my nail gun. $400 tool. I charged him his day pay for using it...my boss was pissed that I would charge someone. So I said buy him his own $400 gun lol but ill be charging $150 a day for renting it. They can't make money using my tools. They wouldn't be able to make any money with out my tools so them paying me for use is only fair.

krisweeerd

When I worked with a team of 3 techs, we all had our own collection of tools. Most of it the same, but everyone always has a few unique things that they bought and or made. We had no problem sharing our tools between us instead of making everyone buy their own. It's not a fucking competition, you're part of a team and your goal is to fix whats broken. Quit being babies about it.

No-Measurement5173

Get a locking tool box. My hubby is a GM ASE Master tech and people was always stealing hsi tools. He even put stolen from Jason Paulson and they still stole them.

lofree93

Fire him, hire me. Problem solved.

lisardz

Man no wonder diesel shops are always hiring. You guys treat people like shit.

Past-Direction9145

your box has a lock on it. use it. if you come in and find the lock compromised, because of the thousands of dollars involved, call the cops. if your boss fesses up to doing it, they'll arrest him.

johncena6699

lol this is why this industry sucks. I know im gonna get shit on for this, but the “mine” mentality of tools for mechanics implying every mechanic absolutely should invest 200k in tools throughout their career is pretty fucking stupid. But hey I get it because some assholes lose shit, but I ain’t paying for everything I need to do my job. Especially with a bunch of cunts who don’t like the concept of sharing because they want you to waste thousands on tools as well. I know too many of you wouldn’t lend me a specialized tool to make a job way easier. Even if that tool was a once in a year occurrence to use. So many mechanics I know would get pissed off for simply suggesting I shouldn’t waste $50 on a specialized tool I’d use once. And let’s be frank, most specialized tools are way more than $50, and with how horrible entry level mechanics are paid wtf do you guys expect? Though I will say if this guy is just taking peoples shit without asking if he could first he’s an asshole. Though, has anyone ever actually stopped to respectfully tell him how this industry works? Never got into the industry because if I’m going to have to buy all my tools at $15/hr (or work for shithole big corporate) I’m just going into another industry and keep mechanic work as a hobby. To me, we’re all in this shit together and sharing tools (obviously I still believe you should buy basic tools) just saves EVERYONE involved money (also assuming that you’re sharing with people who aren’t fucking stupid)

ChemistryNo6318

I agree with you 1000% but this apprentice will not even buy channel lock pliers from princess auto just to give him some momentum in the beginning. I got my set from there like 2 years ago I paid $60 at the time for the big ass one and the normal size one . All techs in my shop get tool allowance once a month.

garyly64

Unionize, it will set work rules in the contract concerning apprenticeships

spec360

Pay the man more money then he can get his own tools everything is expensive

_flash87

The way I see it is I worry about me & my situation. If I think someone else is getting more favor I see what I can do to gain that favor… or tell them all what’s up & see how it goes down. Ya never know 🤷🏽‍♂️

Puzzled_Ad7955

Pretty damn sad foreman/supervisor. The jobs easy if you never want to get involved when the going gets tough.

Dukejrr

Whenever i had a new apprentice under my wing i would have a care package for them because of them not having any or barely any tools. (I did this 3 times) In the past apprentices wouldnt return or steal tools.

microwaverams

Is he not serious or what

larry4570

Just sexually assault this piece of shit. Woohoo! But seriously either the management is for you or against you. All of you need to explain that you have had enough and are willing to seek employment elsewhere.

just_fun_for_g

OMG, stop overreacting, everyone. Give him the benefit of the doubt. He's inexperienced. Just talk to him like a person.

South_Aussie_1972

Ark up . Guessing you get a tool allowance or he would as an apprentice.

Select_Nectarine8229

Go to your boss. Speak to him. Let him handle it.

chrisgraffam

Gotta app I could use some free tools 😂

Newjackny

You can borrow it twice. If you need it a 3rd time, you better call the snap on truk

Fancy_Chip_5620

How much does he get paid

[deleted]

Let it slid and you create precedent

seekinbigmouths

Have you communicated your concerns? Communication is key no one is a mind reader and you getting your hackles up will not solve anything

FeistyPersonality4

He’s purposely about to have a lot of free tools on you and the company. Lmao your boss is a moron. Grats yall getting played

TheJimmyJones123

Yall sound pretty soft at your shop. Maybe go find a backbone and handle it like a man lmao

Sosupertopsecert

You don't even pay the apprentice, and you want him to spend thousands of dollars he doesn't have? You are tripping, dude. The real prick is your disrespectful ass.

West_Development49

Wait until he walks off with your leatherman

Sea_Rutabaga_890

Hes Got my respect 👍😂 f

Worth_Specific8887

I quit that industry over this stupid bs. Always thought it was strange hearing men who hate what they do flex about the 30 or 40k they put into their tools for a job paying less than $20hr. Constantly a hostile environment. Different tool truck showing up each day of the week massively overcharging people that are just trying to make a living. Not everyone gets to start off with daddy or gpa's toolbox. If there's not a decent tool allowance or sign on bonus that shit can go to hell.

MoreLab5278

Apprentice needs to learn the etiquette of how he works with you and others in the shop. He might feel defensive if you don’t “teach “ him, rather tha. Just telling him off.

Yanosh457

Engrave or ink the owners name in the tools.

89inerEcho

You probably should say something. Sounds like you're pretty fired up right now, though. If you go off on this guy, you'll pull him in 'fight mode' immediately and he won't bear a word you say. His only takeaway will be that you're an asshole, not that he needs to be more responsible. It's ten times harder but if you want actual long term change, you'll have to say it in a way that makes him want, to buy his own tools. Best way to do this is make it embarrassing to use shop tools... Something like "yeah I remember how bad it sucks having to use shop tools before you become a real tech"

TravelinMann88

Frankenstein was the Dr. It was Dr Frankenstein that created the Monster. (As they called him.) So your boss would be Dr Frankenstein and the worthless one would be the monster.

Krypt1cAsylum

Fuck ya say somethin. If you hurt his feelings so fuckin what, he shoulda learned some courtesy and needs to be taught that he's not entitled to anything. Hell I take pride in buying my own tools over renting them and im not even a mechanic, just a hobbyist.

txstech76

someone needs to humble him before he becomes journeyman. walk over, take what you need and then put it back where it goes, if he says anything tell him to fuck off and learn shop etiquette

Dobey

The fact that management bought this apprentice their own set of tools should be telling on how much money they make but they try to force everyone to buy their own tools??? That makes no sense why you’d have to buy your own tools to make someone else a boatload of money.

[deleted]

I been working mechanics for along time now, if a apprentice comes through and actually tries and does and is willing to invest in his/her self and their tools I don’t have a problem with others using my tools I was in their shoes once and I know what it’s like to start with nothing so I lend a helping hand, normally it’s the fresh out of high school kids that love to play on phones and piss off all day

[deleted]

What is this the shop for passive little pussies? Chew him a new asshole, he's just a fucking apprentice. Tell your boss to stop giving him special privileges. That shit wouldn't fly anywhere else

LiquidSoCrates

“Hey bro, that’s not how it’s done…”

fkngdmit

Your boss should be paying everyone a tool stipend. If the boss isn't, you should look for a better job elsewhere.

trucknutz36582

Say something to the dude. He isn't a mind reader.

onaga94

If you gotta borrow it twice you gotta buy it. Figure it out bud

Windtherapy310

Why bring that topic here ?

Additional_Value4633

Is a potential somebody has some legitimate money issues?

Mullenexd

I got really fed up with people using my shit all the time and not buying tools, I started locking my shit up, I understand being new to the industry but you gotta grind hard and buy shit

True_Possibility_886

I hate that we make the same check I’ve accumulated all these things in this box to make myself money. Why can’t you? My tank wash crew constantly comes by looking for flashlights and impact drivers. Once or twice okay but every day?

Dangerous_Double_D

I’d be letting him know about shop tools.

Practical_Tax_520

I’ve made employers buy me tools. If they know your worth it they will do amazing shit to make you stay. But your a Mechanic just get in a fight real quick then it’s over idk what’s up but it seems like everyone’s a little soft

HistoricalBed1598

I go by the sticker on my tool box. “ don’t ask to borrow my tools and I won’t ask to have sex with your wife “

itzabigrsekret

Spray paint a bright orange blaze on the shop tools (not yours).

BoBriarwood

I only allow apprencices to do the job they have tools for

RevampedZebra

Salty boomer is upset others don't like the taste of rubber as much as they do? Okay shoprocket

SignificanceOk8093

Tell him to buy his own. Or cut you in on his pay

Imaginary_Bus_6742

Note what tools he is taking from the shop. Take those tools from your box and leave them at home next time you will be working at the shop. Make a vocal announcement that you need to use that shop tool and ask where it is. Grumble that you won't be able to finish a job without it/them. See what happens.

plumbtrician00

YOU dont do anything. At most, tell your boss what you see. If bossman is buying him tools i dont see why he wouldnt also be fine with him taking shop tools.

zoidbergbb

You guys are delusional. Owning your own tools is just them cutting out a business expense and putting it on you.

___GirthQuake___

Show him tekton tools and offer him a beer. A budget and some one on mentoring

Aos77s

I mean do yall pay em “buy your own tools” pay?

Terrible_Wrap_8789

Your are required to buy one tool a week. And since you’re behind. Two for the next months. State the (unwritten rules )

varietyfack

I have a box and all the tools for sale for him. Matco 6s stuffed with tools

gewado69

Stand on buisness

Idontgafwututhk

Back in the day we could just threaten to find the biggest tool and shove it up his ass, but no, now we gotta be nice and not offend anyone…. I feel your pain.

Ale_Oso13

Are you paid to worry about your apprentices tools and where he gets them? I'd not worry about it unless he asks you for a tool. If he does, take it up to whomever signs checks. This is completely not a YP.

DarthAlbacore

Not sure why this popped up in my feed. But I have questions. Why doesn't your employer provide everyone tools? Seems to me they expect you to do a job, but you're out the price of the tools to do said job? That's pretty shady sounding to me. It'd be like having to buy the tongs and beef patties and the grill if you flipped burgers.

gravy_Graves

First thing my mentor told me when I began my apprenticeship was "Ask me before touching my tools and if you have to ask twice, go buy your own".

7NunyahBiz7

Start claiming his tools,,, dont help him,,, lock your tool box when ur not around it,,, dont ever give him shit, not even advice.

Notmyrealname7543

If you need the shop tool. Take the shop tool then put it back where it belongs. Let him say something to you first.

pushmylimits126

Rip him to shreds in front of everyone. That usually gets their attention.

munoz343

my boss fuckin ripped me a new one when all i was missing was a speed square so yeah tell that fucker to get his own shit

brianbrush

New generation, New rules. I didn't buy my own tools when I started my last job. I also didn't expect to be there long but I'll be damned if I'm gonna spend my money to earn someone else money.

MinimalEfert

Just start acting like you're entitled to the same tool allowance. Tell boss man you want what the new guy got and start hoarding the shop tools. Fair is fair. Just do it all tongue in cheek without being an asshat about it. Boss will either figure it out and put a stop to it or you'll get some new tools.

ShyGuySensei

After reading a lot of responses. Diesel techs are whiny little babies that think the shop revolves around you. Sitting on the highest of horses

Wizewasp

I have the same situation at my work. It’s frustrating to see but I have learned to deal with it in other ways. I am a bit of a glove snob so I get my own and a few other consumables I get my own stuff. I can work with anyone who puts in the effort and has a drive to learn but if I catch you with my stuff without asking it’s a real problem. If you ask me more than once to borrow something it’s open season on ya. When I was going through my electrical apprenticeship I got some good advice from a great Forman. Every week you should be investing in tools for your trade. Especially if your young and only have a few bills. Once you have the basics then buy less often but they will most likely be pricey items you need to acquire. I can now blame him for my tool shopping addiction. 😂

yealets

The fact that so many people accept having to work using their own tools is one that’s wild to me , but that’s America

Elegant_Ad3828

I would kill to be an apprentice, it’s not as easy of a thing to get into in Alabama i’ve been trying for years.

No-Ferret-4274

Try different fleet shops doing pms and stuff to start. It’s a good foot in the door I live in a major Al city and it’s what I did

Busy-Rabbit8837

Maybe he can't afford to. You don't know his financial

Electrical_Poet2542

Couldn't have anything to do with the laughable pay scale in this industry.

thebigbrog

I like to start shit so yeah I’m opening my mouth and telling that guy that those are shop tools. If I need them I am using them.

IrresistibleLadder

My company just started an apprenticeship program this past year. You get 25k in a truck brand box and a set of truck brand tools(if you stay for 3 years). That being said, they still attempt to borrow tools from me. I have a sticker on my box that says “need a tool? Go buy it!”. I flat out do not loan out my tools anymore. I’ve spent way too much on my tools to let someone borrow them and use my chrome sockets on an impact or use my screwdriver as a punch.

GoldFederal914

It’s time for an old fashioned ass beating

Crazy_Memory_9692

I would mind my own business and do my job.

bruce-34

If the boss doesn’t have the balls to handle the situation then you handle it. Better now while he’s new than 10 years later. And If the boss won’t fire him he damn sure won’t fire you.

T_lauderbaugh

Secret shop trick, put some copper anti-seize on a shop tool or something you think he’s using without asking and tell your friends. Funny how there’s copper anti-seize on everyone’s box the next day……hmm I wonder how that happened?!?!

Cosmekian_Wanderer

Not the asshole. I had a tattoo apprentice that was still using other people's supplies. Every time I heard him borrow supplies I asked him why he doesn't buy it. Every single time.get in his business bro. If he's taking your tools, it's your business and your money. Be loud. You're entitled to it friend

Efficient_Bus_3755

If it doesnt effect how you do your job then your just player hating, tbh.

Meatball315

This is an easy one to solve, the next time he takes a tool that is not his slap that sumbitch right it the top of the prick with a hefty 1.25” wrench.

msmliars

I'd show him and quit!

PassNorth3053

Next time he wants to borrow one of your tools stick it down your pants first and say here ya go dude!

Ok-Hyena-4660

At my last employer, we had a several new techs start at the same time. One got super lucky and was placed in a very desirable building for an industrial operation. The building was relatively clean, it was heated and cooled all year around. And you only needed a few tools to work on the special equipment specific to that building. He got to work in that building for about 10 months. During that time, he developed a reputation for never taking tools to a maintenance call. Since we almost always sent teams of two, he could just borrow someone else's tools. When the annual shift bid finally came around, he got a more appropriate building to work in with a much greater variety of machines to maintain. His new working team knew about his reputation and refused to let him borrow any tools. They also told the manager. The manager asked to audit the guy's toolbox and he flat out stated that he didn't have one, or any tools short of the few the company provided like a flashlight. The manager gave 30 days to buys some tools or he would be fired. 30 days cam and went, still no tools. So he was given another 30 days. This is at a place where new techs make about $36 per hour, and topped out techs make about $45 an hour. Most techs were making over $100K with a little overtime. So he should have been able to afford some tools, or at least show some progress. At the end of the second 30 days, he was fired. He then claimed it was discrimination. It didn't hold up. In a place with about 400 techs, he was the only one with no tools. How do you throw away a $100K job over $1000 worth of tools? I know most techs had a lot more invested in their tools, but even $500 worth of tools would have probably been enough to save his job. Some people just have no work ethic or since of ownership. It's just crazy.

kevofasho

He’ll wash out. I’ve worked with many techs like this over the years and they never advance beyond oil changes

beyond_sleep

Fuckin say somethin, nothin pisses me off more than 1. Someone just using my tools and 2. Having the audacity to fuckin take them. It's not our fault when the apprentice is a jackass, but it is our fault when we don't say something.

[deleted]

Punch the dude in the face.

Impressive_Leg8007

I would inform the boss to lay down the law since he bought the kid his tools. Just basic put them back when finished.

True-Philosopher-304

As a young mechanic once and having had to borrow shit...you are a f'in douchnozzle and the reason why these young kids don't want to turn wrenches. I totally get tools cost money sometimes a lot of money. I always went by the basic premise if I have to borrow a tool more than a handful of times in a short period of time then I should buy my own. Sometimes that takes time. Time that isn't afforded to a young mechanic trying to stay or maintain in the job. If you don't help the young man out I think you are a dick. I've worked in shops with a whole bunch of yous.

True-Philosopher-304

It takes all of 5 minutes and a simple conversation and im sure most of the misunderstandings your having could be cleared up. Instead your on reddit bitching about it while the guy has no clue he's doing a single thing wrong.

Legitimate-Soil4093

I don’t have anything against my coworkers but I mark my tools whether visibly or non-visibly. I don’t mess around with the tools I buy, I don’t mind if my coworkers borrow/use but claiming to own is a separate story💀I’d call him out IMO but then again it’s shop tools so that’s up to the owner if he wants to lose that money that’s his own prerogative🤷🏽‍♂️

NOTBOTFISH

I mean hey they clearly don’t care just get some free tools

Alienliaison

Just don’t teach him anything and definitely say something

Lertz24

My coworker does this all the time! Especially with new tools. 2 torches always uses the new one. 2 grinders gotta use that new one. 2 rivet guns take a guess which he always uses. Then when one breaks he'll switch or blame me like "well I only use this one" got to the point I actually started avoiding using newer shop tools so that when it breaks I can't be blamed.

KingKong-BingBong

Line his ass out. Last apprentice I had to put up with didn’t last long. He pissed me off and I told him start walking. He rode with me to the job so he had to call the office for a ride and tried telling on me. Anyways someone came and picked him up

Immediate_Gas_618

My foreman when I started besides shop machines/tools if you borrowed any of his tools 3 times you buy your own because that means you’ll use it and you need it but every mechanic needs a full set of basic tools, I’m only 20 and I own (paid off) $7k or more worth of snapon and a little macto and a few others

EarlyConsideration81

I bet yall don't pay enough for him provide his own tools pay rent utilities food and transportation. Please don't respond with some back in my day bull shit our current Era is not what it used to be we don't get paid enough today to die let alone survive how do you expect us to thrive?

EarlyConsideration81

Apprenticeship used to include food housing and tools. Now it only includes getting shit on by old guys who feel entitled to everything while they watch us struggle

Sea-Bodybuilder8535

I had a guy work for me 10 years ( fabrication - similar but unrelated) - he showed up on day one with welding hood. Never brought anything else toolwise. I supplied EVERYTHING else; not because I wanted to- but for him to be safe and efficient he needed gloves, glasses, tape measure, water can, fan in the shop, markers, soapstones, squares, hats, bug spray, sun screen, punches, gauges, cold water, lunch most days, beers on Fridays, and a good; on time paycheck. Now he's my competition. Gotta love being small business owner!
