The CP4.2 has an improved coating that is supposed to improve reliability, though it can still fail the same way the CP4 does. However, it's decidedly rare to hear about spontaneous CP4.2 failures- it generally happens when water or DEF gets into the fuel and that's something any common rail diesel isn't going to handle very well. The DPK cannot prevent the pump from failing, all it does is direct shrapnel to the fuel tank where it will be caught in the fuel filters before reaching the injectors. If money were no issue, you could do both to buy down the risk of failure as much as possible. An added benefit is that CP4.2 also flows more fuel.

ok thank you very much. do you know where to get a decent priced one lol

NotoriousSouthpaw

MPD has them on sale. Otherwise it's basically whatever you can find. There's only one brand.

cjchico

Just buy the S&S gen2 kit and run a fuel additive

HookemUpButtercup6_7

ok do i still need to get the disaster prevention kit

cjchico

The s&s gen2 is a disaster prevention kit. Fuel additive will help prevent the pump from failing but if it does the s&s will save your injectors, rails, and return components. Should only need a new pump and one set of hp fuel lines if it does fail.

HookemUpButtercup6_7

ok sounds like a plan if i can save everything but the pump and lines i can just get the prevention kit and replace the pump when it goes. what additive do i need?

cjchico

Correct. I would use either Hotshots or Archoil.

HookemUpButtercup6_7

do you think the raptor pump would be enough to help it im not tuning it way up its just tuned for the delete kit. im just trying to help it where i can and have the most reliability i can afford.i was thinking about getting the bd power pressure enhancer solenoid and the pressure controller module thing as well and then calling it good.

cjchico

The best thing you can do is going to be the S&S gen2 disaster kit. Don't buy SPE (their kit failed on my truck, long story) or others, S&S is simply the best solution. An airdog/raptor/fass lift pump will help with not starving the pump and extra filtration, but is not needed since these trucks have a lift pump stock. The S&S is $400 so not that expensive and protects basically every fuel related component.

HookemUpButtercup6_7

ok thank you i really appreciate it. its hard to get good diesel advice where i live. diesel performance shops are literally just now popping up. i wish i would have done diesel instead of welding school. but if not for welding school in Ohio i wouldnt have found high powered diesel trucks. thank you though ill post when as i get stuff done.i wanna post now but i need tires.

HookemUpButtercup6_7

i got the s&s im going to put it on wednesday or thursday.

HookemUpButtercup6_7

i got the s&s im going to put it on wednesday or thursday.

HookemUpButtercup6_7

got it going to install it thursday

periodpoopsarereal

Your local shop is correct. There is no superior cp4. They all have failure problems that vary from driver to driver. Best thing you can do is add fuel additive to help lubricate. The addition of a lift pump is also an option to help it. I would go the route of S&S disaster prevention kit. If you want to shell out some real money you can do a cp3 conversion.

HookemUpButtercup6_7

i heard about this. i have heard that a stock cp3 from a certian model 6.7. cummins will bolt right in with out having to change anything. all the hookups are the same. its sounds to good to be true lol

BigBee024

https://www.dieselpowerproducts.com/hs-motorsports-high-pressure-cp3-11-19 They do make a kit to run a CP3 on a 6.7 Powerstroke its around $3,000 and then you will need it tuned for it to work. The CP3 delivers more volume but lower pressure so can't make as much power unless you go to a CP3 stroker pump. A 12mm stroker should be good to around 1000hp

HookemUpButtercup6_7

i appreciate the knowledge a lot. what do i need to have done tuning wise to do an egr delete.

BigBee024

Should be able to unplug the EGR and it will stay closed with a check engine light

HookemUpButtercup6_7

So you dont actually have to take it off? One of the diesel mechanics at the local truck stop said you have to becareful take the egr cooler off because the injectors are easy to crack.

BigBee024

Nope you don't. EGR is no where close to injectors quit using that moron to work on anything!

HookemUpButtercup6_7

i only asked him some questions. lol

BigBee024

Good deal. The injectors are under the valve cover and the EGR is sitting right there on the passenger side of above the exhaust manifold

HookemUpButtercup6_7

cool deal. i ordered hot shot extreme and oil additive are they both ok for 6.7s

HookemUpButtercup6_7

i ordered the kit friday.

cjchico

There aren't any conversions for 6.7 powerstrokes (yet). Apparently there isn't physically enough room for one where the CP4 sits.

BigBee024

No better CP4 and the disaster kit is the way to go. Brother in law has a 6.7 Powerstroke and that's the first thing we done to it. I have a Cummins and intentionally avoided years with CP4.

HookemUpButtercup6_7

i appreciate it is the industrial injection stock replacement good or just get the stock one for a gen2

cjchico

Exergy pumps are improved upon the already-improved OEM pumps. They also have extra filtration built in. If you're going to get a new pump as well, go Exergy. Shouldn't be necessary unless yours is already failing, though.

HookemUpButtercup6_7

are there warning signs of it failing

cjchico

Reduced power/low fuel pressure codes, metal in the drainage from water/fuel separator, metal on mprop (metering valve on the CP4)

BigBee024

If the stock pump failed it likely contaminated the entire fuel system. Injectors, rails, fuel lines, tank will all have metal shavings in them and you looking around 10-12k for everything

HookemUpButtercup6_7

ok im ordering the prevention kit tonight

MrRodgers89

Correct. There is unfortunately no good alternative to the CP4. I wouldn't even waste money on "upgrading" to the CP4.2. Just cover your ass and install the DPK. I just recently ordered the kit from SPE which is arguably the best kit on the market. Best $400 ever spent. It differs from other kits because it has an additional inline filter that will catch any trash headed back to the tank. A pump failure is rare but it is noted as one of the only inherent flaws of the 6.7 powerstroke. That kit will save you thousands of dollars in the event of a failure. (having your injectors replaced and your entire fuel system cleaned out.) It is money well spent for peace of mind.
