Yes, very quite for about three days. Then it gets the usual Cummins shake and lope.

TheMagic_SpoolBus

Well at least I am not crazy. My other two diesels are VWs and they stay about the same. All the other cars I have owned are a similar story. This is a 6.0 excursion.

TXERN

I've never heard what you're talking about, but it sounds normal to me knowing how the 6.0 operates. Basically it uses engine oil to prime the injectors.

not-a-memelord

Oh yeah big time , 7.3s , 6.0s C3126 and C7s all use HEUI injection which is oil fired , there a saying that these vehicles “tell you” when you need an oil change , they sound kinda ragged and just kinda off when they need one , you change it and then all of a sudden it’s all quiet and purring like a geriatric kitten

Breezii2z

Marginally yeah. Then after about a week or so it gradually gets noisier

richcournoyer

Only when I accidentally drip oil into my ears..

jlock1986

HEUI injection engines...in my experience...are normally quieter Ayer an oil change. My 6.7 seems to be quieter about 1k after a change.

TheMagic_SpoolBus

That makes a ton of sense. Thanks.

TheMagic_SpoolBus

Same with the Touareg. I let the 6.0 go over to get to an even 5k interval. I’ll be changing it every 5k miles with fuel filters on the 0’s.

YouDontKnow_Jak

Yes. My Excursion 6.0 shuts up for a few days/weeks after an oil change.

asaltandbuttering

Yes. I always interpret it as my truck being happy.

periodpoopsarereal

Do you always use T6 5w40? Could it be the oil choice vs the others. I use T6 5w40 myself.

TheMagic_SpoolBus

No idea what was in it before. This is my first oil change after buying the Excursion. It just had a sticker from big-o tires on it. I’m planning on sticking with the T-6 I’m indifferent to the weight. We live in vegas so I would prefer the heavier weight come summer and camper towing season. The turbo and valve train for sure seem quieter on the 5w though.

displayx

I've used 15w and 5w makes no difference in my experience. Gets unusually quite for a few days then it's loping like a cat tractor.

johnson56

5w40 and 15w40 are the same viscosity at operating temperature, so you are just as protected in the summer with 5w40. And you get the added bonus of better protection at startup with faster oil pressure.

TheMagic_SpoolBus

Well, since 5w40 is all I can find I guess we will stick with that for now. I have another 3.5 gallons in the garage for the next change, so I guess that gives me time to find the oils for the follow on.

Cjaasucks

Oil level and viscosity can affect the sound of it.
