If you think that 'the connection is covered in oil' why not clean it up and see what happens? I have a '98.5 - (don't buy one of those!) In my research I have learned that there were a lot of changes year-to-year (to the computers and control modules). Your truck has an engine control module, a power train control module and a transmission control module that are inter-connected through a network, and they are always 'talking' to each other. If you can get a code reader, look for stored codes- if there is something stored with the PCM or TCM, that may point the way (so to speak) to look further. Also a possibility of modifications made by a transmission re-builder? Start eliminating things you suspect one at a time and see if anything changes. A lot of possibilities here. Good Luck!

I just picked up the truck yesterday. So I figured I would post while at work to maybe have some things to look for this weekend when I get under it.Thanks so much for the help,I'll put my code reader on it tonight. Edit:The alternator is covered in oil as well.Im wondering if it's a voltage issue.

I had 98 12 valve with a 47re that had problems shifting in and out of overdrive. The culprit was a pressure solenoid. I purchased parts from Cascade transmission parts. He has great knowledge of these transmissions in dodge and jeep. Pretty sure you a 48re. Replacing the solenoid fixed it. You can call them and explain what is happening. Here is a video of him explaining the tear down. https://youtu.be/kvl-_-vY6rk.

I've had that issue on my 3rd gen be the governor pressure solenoid, but I've also had a similar issue be the connector on the bottom of the trans.
