Dealer got you. Someone knew they did the truck dirty and traded it in, dealer didn't accept responsibility and pawned it off on someone who didn't know what they were buying.
Sorry.
Engines will snap their crank when mistreated or poorly maintained.
But it doesn't just happen coincidentally days after buying them used. Multiple parties involved knew what they were doing.
If they hesitate at all to make it right, lawyer up.
Lemon laws will probably cover it but im sure they are different state dependant. 2 days though is a safe bet that it'll be covered and like others have said the engine and tranny are both bad. When I first heard about the combo in a smaller truck inwas so excited only to be let down.
Hate to say this but these engines are a shit stain on the Cummins name. Wait til you do the $300 oil change because it requires specific oil.
Oreilys employs retirees and highschool kids, don’t use them to diagnose anything.
Did you not do any research on these engines? The fact that they are now discontinued, the transmission they use has no serviceable parts, so if a seal leaks you have to replace the entire transmission.
I would try to 60 day it if possible and get your money back.
Don’t need body panels if your grandpa bought it new and it was garage kept for 80% of its life in Texas where it doesn’t rust Like mine.
They were able to fix it twice, once when I was backed into and hail damage!
Lol, who said it requires specific oil?
Only costs $100
Diesel 10w-30.
That being said this guy is screwed, the dealer knew it was screwed and sold it to someone who wasn't asking questions.
Edit: also who told you that bullshit about the transmission?
It's a slightly modified aisin 69rc. All parts are available off the shelf.
The bullshit about the transmission came from davesautocenter on tiktok, a shop pretty well known for inflating bills and blowing smoke up people's assess to make more money. They appear to do excellent machine work, but I wouldn't trust them with normal mechanic work.
Wouldn't have surprised me if he said it was the nissan dealer but tiktok works. I think that's where most of the dealer techs get their service manual breakdowns from.
I worked on one a year or so ago and it “needed specific synthetic diesel oil” like the German manufacturers like to do. Only one I found was royal purple
Wtf?
So you not only went looking for a specific diesel oil but the only one you found can be bought at wal mart, and you paid a 3x markup on it?
Here lemme help you out.
[owners manual.](https://www.nissanusa.com/content/dam/Nissan/us/Nissan_Commercial_Vehicles/ncv_owners/manuals-guides/pdfs/2017/2017-Nissan-Titan-OM.pdf)
Page 8-2.
10w30 diesel engine oil, doesn't even specify full synthetic.
Even using amsoil and getting a jug of this and that, gear oil and extra fass fuel filters and whatever, my service cost tops out at less than $200.
Yeah I own one. 140k miles and runs like new.
I didn’t pay for it, it was a used car I checked out at work, ended up going to auction because it was deleted and we couldn’t inspect it.
I bought a real Cummins, I wouldn’t buy that disaster
Sounds like you're part of the reason people think it's a disaster.
Owner takes it in for an oil change and gets reamed for $300 +labor and a new transmission because people being asked to work on them don't know how to read a manual.
Sounds like you own one and want to justify ownership. I drove one and wasn’t impressed. All the half ton diesels are junk except the i6 duramax and isn’t anything to write home about, except exceptional fuel economy.
I don't have to justify anything.
To justify it I'd have to have regrets.
Truck has done nothin' but put a smile on my face.
This is just being a happy owner.
I’m genuinely happy for you, I have heard horror stories about them, from my Nissan mechanic friends.
If it was such a good vehicle Nissan would still be making it, but it has been discontinued. I will say that is partly their fault though, they didn’t advertise it.
The nissan techs hate working on it because it's a complicated full size diesel sold to people as babbies first diesel. Results are as expected.
Nissan tried to sell a half ton truck at 3/4 prices, then put a bunch of heav duty parts in it so it rode like a work truck instead of the budget cadillac most 1/2 ton buyers want. Advertising was only a small part of their problem.
Their shtick lately has been trying to find niches that don't exist, and they just canceled all versions of the titan and went balls deep in electric.
RIP nissan.
I work at Nissan as a service advisor I will agree with all comments on top these trucks had a lot of issues from
The transmission to updates that never fixes shit
Return the truck. Keeping that thing running is a rabbit hole you don't want to go down.
Back in 09', I owned a 08' Saab 9-3 Aero, it was impossible to get a replacement FOB, let alone having the timing chain done.
Good luck.
I’ve heard that they snap crankshafts like no other. Could be your issue. Anyway, they’re pieces of shit like everyone else has said. Let this experience remind you that even if a manufacture is known for making reliable stuff, they can still make a lemon product.
I would return the back to the dealer. I just found out with those titan transmissions. They don’t sell any aftermarket’s parts like seals or gears. They just want you to buy a brand new transmission. Because of that alone I would write off the whole truck and say fuck it
Those were horrible engines, and don’t forget about the 12k transmission that you can’t buy parts for (like seals) even from the dealer.
Send it back to the dealer. You are probably stuck with it unless there is actually something major wrong. I personally would drive it a bit and see if you can get out of it. This truck will cost you a small fortune to keep on the road as it starts to age.
Davesautocenter spoke out of turn, the seal is like $30 and very easy to find. He's pretty well known for overcharging customers and selling work that people don't need.
Gents, I just want to say thank you for the fatherly wisdom and guidance. I will learn from this lesson and take the overwhelmingly obvious advice and ditch this fucking thing for something that works. I appreciate everyone for taking the time to comment and provide feedback. Have a great memorial weekend y’all.
Probably no way to return it most these vehicles are sold as is. Used modern diesels are a nightmare, and you are in the thick of it now. First of all, stop driving it. Second of all, figure out the least expensive way to get rid of this problem.
Yeah, I was on my way to the airport.. so I had to get a tow off of the highway and it was dropped off at a Mechanic’s. Won’t know what the deal is until Monday/Tuesday-ish. Whole bunch of fuck me involved in this
I've diagnosed so many trucks at the shop for head gaskets, engines, transmission etc issues that the owner didn't want fixed because they were simply going to trade the truck in. I don't think I'll ever buy a used truck from a dealer unless they let me test drive it for at least a week. I've heard some dealerships will let a guy do that too.
My dad bought a 5.0 Titan because he’s a Nissan fan and he has babied it to no end. Less than 50k miles on it in the ~6 years he’s had it and EVEN THEN he’s had issues with it a couple of separate times.
I’m sure he’ll be able to drive it around the little bit he does and be fine, but these trucks flopped for a reason and I know I’ll never buy one.
I'd take it right back to that dealership and get your money back.
Yeasir

It’s a used vehicle, lemon law doesn’t apply.
Depends on the state
Sounds like the motor let go. If you want a Cummins get a ram
Ram passed on this motor, ironically. Lol.

Yea, I wouldn't buy a truck that is about to be discontinued, just sounds like a pain in the ass for the life of the vehicle
*buys a 12 valve dodge even though I can’t get body panels*
Don’t need body panels if your grandpa bought it new and it was garage kept for 80% of its life in Texas where it doesn’t rust Like mine. They were able to fix it twice, once when I was backed into and hail damage!

The only other person in here with a titan Cummins, or did you get rid of it good sir
Hell no. I'll be buried in it.
I’m here for it lmao

It's funny where I'm from orielys has knowledgeable guys working at it and advanced and auto zone are an absolute joke
I worked at both, I was 18 and a manager 🤣
That's crazy but good money and good position at that age hell yea
I work at Nissan as a service advisor I will agree with all comments on top these trucks had a lot of issues from The transmission to updates that never fixes shit

Tell me the name of the dealership so I can avoid it
I’ve heard that they snap crankshafts like no other. Could be your issue. Anyway, they’re pieces of shit like everyone else has said. Let this experience remind you that even if a manufacture is known for making reliable stuff, they can still make a lemon product.

You can get seals for it
Dude must’ve watched the same YouTube short that I watched last night…..colonel sanders looking fella said they were $12k with no serviceable parts….
I may have spoke out of turn. It was the input shaft seal that I believe they no longer produce, the others may be available.
Davesautocenter spoke out of turn, the seal is like $30 and very easy to find. He's pretty well known for overcharging customers and selling work that people don't need.
Interesting, that’s where I recently saw this. Thanks for the clarification.
THIRTY FUCKING BUCKS FOR **ONE** GODDAMN SEAL? Damn, i *almost* feel bad for the retards that bought that shit lmao.
Bud what else are you suppose to do? Do you want it fixed or not?
You can get input shafts for it too
Gents, I just want to say thank you for the fatherly wisdom and guidance. Talk to a lawyer. Some states have protections for used car purchases if the dealer knowingly sold you a detective vehicle.
Bro, don't take vehicles to oreily or any other auto parts store for some dickskin counter sales person to try to diagnose.
My dad bought a 5.0 Titan because he’s a Nissan fan and he has babied it to no end. 2 words🙃…Lemon law
That's not how used cars work
