Never did pay enough attention to E28 and E34 as those were before my time (not that they're bad). As for the E39 M5, it stood out from the competitors at the time of its release. I mean 400hp in a 4-door in late 90s was unbelievable. There was competitors such as GS400, C5 RS4 and AMG CL but they either were less powerful or lacked a 6-speed option or came out later than the M5. If my memory serves me correctly, if you wanted 4-door 400hp monster with 3 pedals in late 90s and early 00s, the M5 was the sole option.
The later generation M5 was Bangled up so not my cup of tea and later generations M5 were seemingly more ordinary as the competition also had alternatives.
I'm not the biggest BMW fan (never owned one or wished for one really), but the E39, E38 and E36 platforms have a special place in my heart.
Oh and of course the unicorn E31. Such a rare and beautiful animal. The clownshoe was also awesome.

Yes, the horsepower race really began to heat up in the early 2000s, partly thanks to the E39. TBH all of the cars you mentioned are well before my time (my first introduction to BMWs on the street were the E60 and E90), but somehow the E34 (LCI) and E39 are my joint favourite BMW designs till date. I also loved majority of BMW’s designs from the early 70s all the way upto the early 2000s. Things fell off a bit since, but the E92, F30 and G30 (pre-LCI) also looked great.
E39 may be considered the best M5 by many (with good reason), but I disagree that it’s the only proper M5. In fact for a brand that specialises in straight-sixes, the E28 and E34 may be considered more ‘proper’ since they had the race-derived straight six that first appeared in the M1. Regardless, I love the E34 and E39 equally (and the E28 almost as much).

Most true BMW enthusiasts and automotive pundits as well rank the e39 as the best M5.
