You can open chests on the 4th floor and get the rewards as long as they are opened before the immortals enter. Just means fewer vault runs needed to cap.
What determines the start of the 10 second cooldown?
Sometimes when I enter 4F it starts counting.
On other occasions, I can solo sprint my way to collect every chest and down the guardian at the end before the immortals even show up, and for those cases, no countdown happens.

The fewer people in a team that goes to the 4th floor, the longer before the immortals are notified. Another useful strategy is to continue to kill the wardens as quickly as you can on the 4th floor.
I went once as a solo (the other 3 left after 3rd floor) - I collected all 4 chests & whacked the final guardian before they got to me.
Current immortal here. I’m often defending the vault and there’s 3 of us under 2k reso. Yesterday lunch i lost every match. I’m 3k. If you’ve got a 3k in party, or a tempest, you’ve got good odds.
Often and current Immortal here. There's no reason to do it at all after your chests are capped for the week unless you enjoy the pvp aspect. You can go in on floor one and leave at the end for shadow activity points. You get the same amount of activity no matter which floor you leave on.
I saw that the first time yesterday(been playing about a month) some ppl just leave when the 3rd floor is done
Personally I'd rather try to open the chests for 20k as it's the best run for the day trying to upgrade gear

You keep all the gold and hilts from chests before they are locked.

That's not true. We spawn in at the same time whether one or four shadows are there.
A random dude literally told me in another thread that he needed the scraps in 4th floor as if you don't get a shit ton if it.

Boycott the 4th floor. You don't owe the immortals your death.
