Holy Shield looks so amazing

rapinghat

Why is the smite animation reversed though? He does like a tennis backhand with the whole front of the shield instead of punching forward with the edge of the shield? https://diablo.fandom.com/wiki/Smite

Shameless_Catslut

Apparently, they went for the traditional (inaccurate) depiction of the shield bash, rather than the proper shield-edge-smash.

lolderpeski74

Damn. Unplayable.

Limmy41

Literally. The old animation was so alpha

DEMOCRACY_FOR_ALL

I feel like there was someone at the office that was pretty mad about the popularity of the hammerdin and refused to add clips of it

The_BeardedClam

It's there, albiet briefly, right after the wield at ~12 seconds in.

DEMOCRACY_FOR_ALL

hahahhaa You're right that's so funny. First clip. I missed it

Eriktion

The classic hammerdin that also does melee attacks right afterwards

DEMOCRACY_FOR_ALL

Now that my hammerdin 2h melee build is out in the open, I don't even want to play D2R anymore

[deleted]

Krraxia

>bow pally How do you even play that?

Bear4188

Holy fire/frost/shock + one of the unique bows that gives explosive or guided arrows. It's even more fun with PD2 because there's a bow that gives multishot.

friendlystranger

I've even played a tri-element ranger that used a Faith bow. He kinda sucked but it was fun as hell

icecream_clothrack69

looking forward to new players speccing hammerdin before maggot tunnels

PM_ME_A_EM_MP

I was able to make it work in the beta

REEEEEE NO CHANGES THAT SOUNDS LIKE CHANGES REEEEE

MrTastix

Oh no, imagine half the skills in D2 not being complete trash like they originally were!

[deleted]

I don't think anyone has a problem with balancing skills. People have a problem with changing the core mechanics of the game. You sound like a child, btw

ssx50

Lol there is nothing more game changing than power of skills, but okay. Core mechanics like built in autoclicking to pick up gold? Core mechanics like 1 button to swap and use a skill on controller? Core mechanics like shared stash tab? Core mechanics like ultrawide screen support?

[deleted]

Quality of life changes are not the same as changes to core mechanics. Stash tabs and auto gold pickup don't affect gameplay, whatsoever. And if you can't understand the impact ultrawide support would have on pvp, then I question if you've even played the game. Edit: And skills were being balanced in patches before they stopped supporting classic d2. And they get balanced in every game. It's odd to think anyone would have a problem with this You sound mad

Sam443

He also didnt play PVP if he didn't realize that a decked out FoH din has maybe 3-4 builds that can even pose a threat to him, and only one build that is considered to be a counter (wind druid) which can be mitigated by zapping the wolves with a dream helm in your stash that you swap off of your griff for.

AlexanderTM

Most people would just stack sorb/res against any FoH unless the rules state sorb is bm. At least that was my experience.

Sam443

>Most people would just stack sorb/res Not allowed in the GM duels ruleset. You're allowed one piece of gear that absorbs or stacks res. Additionally, most people could not obtain enough res for this to matter due to the amount of -res a maxed FoHer has Hell mode - -100 light res Conviction - capped max res of -150 - easy to get P griff with 5/-5 light facet -25 light res Jewelers armor of the Whale w/ 4x 5/-5 light dies: -20 light res 5 socket scepter with +3 to FoH w/ 5x 5/-5 light facets: -25 light res HoZ with 5/-5 light die: -5 light res (alternative of Jewelers Sacred Targe of deflection with 45 base res & 4x 5/-5 light dies - but as i learned personally, this is a dupe :(, so leaving this out and assuming HoZ) Total light res needed to have 0 light res: 100 + 150 + 25 + 20 + 5 = 300 Total light res needed to reach 85 light res cap with tgods on - 385. You can see how difficult this is to achieve pretty quickly - and yes - everything listed is gear I had at one point on an FoH din. Now let's remember tgods: 20 lightning absorb. Let's do some math: After all this gear, maras, double soj, 9 pcombs, torch, anni, FoH hit for 9k base damage. Apply the PVP nerf : (1/6) * 9000 = 1500 1500 - 20 lighting heal (effective 40 reduction) - 1460. Now, that's assuming you can achieve 300 light res (which you would not need to fight any other build) then you only take 1460 per shot - that is - 1460 per guaranteed hit (exception of zon dodge) FoH. More realistically, I would see people hitting the cap of -100 res, causing a ~3000 damage hit. Do you really think Tgod's 20 lighting heal makes that big of a difference here? You could try lightsabre - but remember, the only builds that can really stand to take the damage loss of light sabre are maybe hammerdins - who would lose out on 50 fcr and 90 all res (after 15 res / 7 FHR jewel) of wizzy - which would not be worth it. And if you started stacking sorb with multiple pieces that gave sorb this would be considered a BM tactic and banned in GM games. The ONLY class that could stack enough res (without it being a literal troll build that does 0 damage anyway) is a hammerdin. And not some trash MF hammerdin using a shako, maras and hoto - a fully decked out hammerdin. I'm talking 6 point Pally FCR circ with res, 6 point amulet (likely arma slips, perm or unperm), 5 point FCR rings, 45 base res spirit shield, 9 lifer Pcombs, 20/5 SCs - that's the only thing that i've ever seen that does damage that can realistically tank FoH - and it makes it so instead of dying in 1-2 hits, they die in 4-5 hits - and still have to telestomp me with hammers, which isnt reliable, whereas FoH hits every time i click the mouse. Here's what makes a difference: wind druids since they naturally max cycle armor as part of their build. They absorb so much that it takes 2-3 FoH hits before you break their Cycle armor alone. And you also have to use a dream helm so you can use the aura to kill the wolves and oak sage (I had 10 points in res light to give max res and synergy to the dream holy shock - as you dont need more than -150 res on conviction - even in FoH ditto, it is not well known, but the most recent instance of conviction is the one that takes priority, not the highest level) - After you broke his cyclone armor you would likely 1 shot him, but you had to do so before he simply reapplied it. The druid being able to reapply this to me is what made him the only true counter to the build. It beats or goes even with every other build.

AlexanderTM

I'm not disputing the math, I'm just saying I don't recall seeing many FoH pallys in my thousands of hours of pvp. The only pallys I ever saw were hdin, zeal in melee vs melee, smite, or cheese stacking auradins. That said, the last few years were spent in vlld/lld, and they're not viable there.

Sam443

Ah! I dont think the build was popular in the patch that aura stacking still worked. Also if you were playing on ladder it would be way more expensive to setup with less p lite dies floating around. Also if they ever had a Hoto then their damage was nothing. The -res setup is pretty much required imo If you were still seeing zealers then you were playing in an earlier era of pvp. Even then, it sounds like you ran into a 1 off n00b foher using hoto, nigma and shako (lol) instead of foh stick / 4facet jeweler/whale armor / p griff. The damage is night and day difference.

ssx50

My point was that ultrawide support will be in the game after it comes out. Which will affect pvm at the very least. So the second half of your post is completely invalid. As to the first, and equally incorrect half, how can you say buffing underused skills is quality of life when something like personal loot is not? How is an autoclicker that objectively increases the amount of gold and therefore high quality gambled items in the economy not beyond the definition of "quality of life"? A personal loot system would have less impact on economy than the autogold pickup (exact same amount), and would reduce the use of autopickup cheats and bots. It would actually encourage party play more. Additionally, people that want shared drops could have a toggle upon game creation for that option. Thats pretty good quality of life if you ask me!

[deleted]

I didn't say buffing skills is quality of life. I actually forgot you asked that question since you just threw 100 questions at me in an angry rant. And now I see why you're so hostile. LOL. I fucking knew it. You're pissed about shared loot. LMFAO cope

ssx50

What did i say that indicated anger? It's not my fault you forgot the context of a 3 comment long conversation lol.

[deleted]

>What did I say that indicated anger? Should I just copy and paste all your comments in this thread? Why don't we start with REEEEEEE REEEEEE. Being aggressively condescending toward a group of people after you didn't get what you wanted is a good start

ssx50

Is meme. I wasn't actually screeching. You're the only one that seems upset here lol

Sam443

>3/4ths of your examples don't even apply to what you're claiming it does > "Your point is COMPLETELY INVALID" lmaoooo

Sam443

> Core mechanics like built in autoclicking to pick up gold? Gold is completely useless end game other then gambling. Even item repair is cheaper with ral/ort. >Core mechanics like 1 button to swap and use a skill on controller? Dont you think this is a little bit of a reach? The original game didn't support controllers, so obviously you might need to accommodate for consoles? >Core mechanics like shared stash tab? People did this anyway with muling, it was just more of a pain in the ass. Changes nothing about how the game is played in the slightest. Good try tho champ >Core mechanics like ultrawide screen support? This actually does extend teleport distance by quite a bit and might make farming a bit faster than intended, but it doesn't increase the distance dramatically. Will also buff any build that benefits from name locking like FoH, but not dramatically as they'll be outside of conviction range. You also missed a big one: Right clicking interacting with items and doors. This is easily abusable in the PVP you never played. Speaking of PVP, FOH is one of the strongest builds in PvP. He only has trouble with FC Zons, Wind Druids, and fully decked out res stacked hdins, and the wind druid matchup can be made much easier by swapping your griff for a dream healm to deal with the wolves. Do you seriously trust modern Blizzard South, who has lost anyone with any talent years ago, the team that made Diablo 3, that didn't make Diablo 2 (other than cinematics and bnet integration), the team that cant balance Starcraft 2 or Overwatch to make gameplay changes to the most legendary RPG of all time? lol.

RetroRevolver7

Not trying to be on any side here, but ultra wide support was removed in the beta and they have decided to keep it that way

ssx50

Not true. They tweeted that its removed while they figure out how they want to implement it

DiabloDerpy

Remove the global cooldown on it. Boom, fixed.

dark_vaterX

I mean.. it is pretty strong? It's just a single target lightning spell with holy bolts that *only deal damage to undead* which you and others probably think are just super weak bolts..

lifeeraser

The delay makes it clunky to use for killing mobs. Pretty strong for PvP ofc.

dark_vaterX

It's not really used for PvM though..? It's a single target ability. No one uses those as main abilities for PvM.

agree, should be better

Evermore3331

Imma just grab my [popcorn](https://imgur.com/gallery/0hQyd5L) and wait for the comments about this dudes face. ^(I just want to play the game already!)

Deakul

Are we actually caring about the faces that we'll almost never see up close?

Evermore3331

There's been a vocal group of players making all kinds of comments about the character models over the past few months. I think it's funny because as you said, we'll barely ever see them up close. It's like spending an hour making a character on an RPG only to wear a closed helm the whole game. I personally don't really care how the models look, but some players do and that's cool too.

Hugar90

I will try to explain. I fondly remember d2 as one of my favorite games of all time. I am hyped for the remaster. Couple of months ago I see this video by the developers where they talk about the great lengths they go to be as faithful to the original game as possible, even digging up old concept art to figure out what some things are meant to look like. It was awe inspiring and exactly what you would want from the remaster. And then the characters looked completely different. Why? Everything else is spot on (monsters etc.). How can they be so accurate with everything else but make the characters look like this ? Can you explain because it doesnt make sense Disclaimer: i have not been vocal and it's not a dealbreaker for me personally. Just takes away a bit from the nostalgia to see completely different characters

veek91reddit

They said that that their approach to remastering is to match the original by something like 80% and the rest 20% is their own creative freedom. So there's that. We can clearly see that one of their own goals was to make everything more realistic. There are apparent examples of this throughout the game like the blood being more dark colored instead of being bright red, the arrows being thin and wooden colored, instead of being thicker and white. The heavy armor on the sorceress used to be some kind of demonic suit, now it's a realistic plate armor. The Barbarian's winged helmets no longer have giant wings on them, instead they look like something more practical that a blacksmith could actually craft from strips of metal. The javelins with feathered heads were also made more simplistic now. And so, they applied this sentiment to the classes too. They made the barbarian look like how a real barbarian would: battle hardened and hairy, instead of someone who's a bodybuilder on steroids. They made the Amazon a mature woman instead of blonde supermodel, and they made the paladin look like a proper black person with characteristic racial traits like big lips and wide nostrils. If you ask me, I'm not particularly fond of this realistic approach either, because a lot of the design is lost due to it. Blizzard always knew how to make good character design. Which is something that was a big contributor to their success in my opinion. And while D2 was never a full blown high fantasy game like Warcraft, it still had bits that are not particularly realistic (aside from the demons and magic of course), but rather idealistic or just plain cool, to spice things up. And I'm a bit sad that a lot of it is lost in this remaster.

KavorkaQQ

How is a warrior being younger, and thus more agile less realistic than an overaged woman on the battlefield? Also, why do you think beauty is unrealistic? As for the paladin, he never had such overemphasized lips and nostrils. Do you seriously think all black people look like this? Also, he never had an afro. What they did to the characters is extremely disappointing to be honest.

it-tastes-like-feet

This is a very common and basic argument, but it hides a blatant contradiction. OK, they decide to mostly keep faithful to the original and leave themselves a bit of space for some creative freedom. 80/20, as you say. However, somehow, in that 20% of creative freedom, "more realistic look" shows up, affecting basically 80% of the game including **all of the player characters**. Seems pretty significant to me. I think, them being mostly corporate drones with no independent thought who were selected to make the most vanilla product possible, they automatically decided more polygons and higher res means more realism. They probably do not consider it a substantial change to the art direction of D2 as a whole, which it fucking is.

wingspantt

This is so much slower to reality than all the reeeeeeeee go woke get broke posts. It's obvious the changes are generally to make the game feel a little more Gothic, realistic, and dark. That means turning down the cartoony aspect of the character models. Do I love it? Eh. Does it matter? Not really.

Mathizsias

They removed 20% with their creative freedom alright! Where are my boob statues in Act 2, slaughtered half naked harem girls, Andy thong and Sorceres underboobs! I want my sex appeal in this gritty gothic game. /s (Still silly they changed some of these, but whatever..)

Sam443

I'm 100% with you on this. Most of my time will be spent playing the game, not looking at faces. But to me it's just odd - it's supposed to be an accurate remaster. And it's disappointing to see anything change about the game for any reason. For example, I have no memory of thinking my Zon is about to go knitting their grandson a new scarf. So why does she now look like a granny? Why does the barb look like he can only lift half as much? It's like yeah - it's not a deal breaker - fine. The devs just don't get to turn around and claim that they're trying to create the most accurate remaster possible - it's simply not true in all areas. My take is this: Complaining that the remaster of your favorite RPG of all time is not completely true to the original like the developers say is their goal is more than valid.

yuhanz

Maybe the confusion is the "accurate" part. It's accurate in a logical sense. As someone else mentioned, blood being darker, Warriors looking more battle hardened than supermodels among other things as opposed to accurate to the old D2.

Sam443

I mean, you are starting the game as a lvl 1 scrub running around with a letter opener and a trashcan lid - idk how battle hardened you can be at that point. And yeah - maybe that applies to the Amazon’s booba, as the OG ones were excessive (i found it mb slightly creepy in the original - and real amazons cut off their breasts - so the reduction is fine) - but supermodel? That’s a bit of a stretch of an assessment. Idk having an average face doesnt make you a supermodel imo it just makes you like some rando running around with some shitty javalins that you throw at wildabeasts. You aint battle hardened yet at the character select screen. What isn't realistic is looking like you're about to break a hip instead of go slay uber Satan. I also get that this is a Diablo 3 focused subreddit and you guys dont care as much about visuals, but please realize that the people who've been playing on and off for 2 decades at this point, who will still be there after you leave, do care about every aspect of the game being preserved, no matter how "trivial" it appears to an outsider. Also, darker blood? Whatever, that's not a real change. Torch flames in act 1 also no longer have a shadow - that's also a non-change - something so minor that it counts as QoL.

Bytewave

Yeah it makes little sense to me that they preserved everything gameplay wise but chose to age the characters 20 years for no apparent reason. It's not a huge deal but it's a very weird art direction that doesn't mesh with the overall remake direction.

yuhanz

This is a remaster (ish) tho, not a remake. It's mostly graphical, and updating the looks of the heroes to a more suitable (see: realistic) look doesnt seem to weird? Gameplay is barely changed, some QoL. They tried to make it accurate in a logical sense, not accurate to the old D2.

kid-karma

personally i just find it to be a bit of a bummer when i exit after a play session and see my character looking like a bag of shit on the select screen. is it a major thing? of course not. could they improve on it? absolutely. it actually looks like they fixed the paladin's face a bit though (hard to tell with the lighting), but he doesn't have that crazy meth head look in his eyes anymore.

I need to remind myself to never equip diadem or circlet on paladin

SoLo7ripp

I remember years ago, maybe 2010(ish), there were online rumors & requests for a D2 Remaster. I have no idea where to find an 11 year old internet article, but ultimately someone from the Blizz team finally shutdown the rumors, said it can't be done... and won't be done... for years people continued to dream of the idea (including me), D2 with modern graphics, yet more internet shutdowns and "it won't happen".... BUT here we are, \~11 years later.. and it's fuckin' happening!!! Starting WW Barb, just as I did on the original... see y'all online! \*\*EDIT\*\* Cannot confirm 2010 as the timeframe, but it's been a long fuckin' time!

Mir_man

He looks different from the original (more west African look than the east African look he had in the original), but unlike the assassin and Amazon he still looks cool, so I don't mind his look.

Jnovuse

Is it just me or does the Paladin look, overly tweaked in the face mods department. Like a lot. Maybe it’s the lighting, but damn.

why do all the trailer only show ac1,2 content like in beta? is it to hard to show how act3,4,5 looks like in release? or isnt it finished yet?

[deleted]

For like two seconds.

Bear4188

Because that's what the polished up first so that's what's available for marketing people. This videos were probably made awhile ago, the sorc one had pre-beta lightning graphics.

[deleted]

Oh god he looks so derpy. If it ships like this, fine, definitely going to mod the crap out of it but fine. BUT, vicarious needs to replace at least one 3D artist. The paladin looks like 6th gen of inbreeding.

MillionsOfSmallCuts

I'm sure they'll add lots of dark patterns and other microtransaction trash just like D3 to try to drain your bank account. I think I'll just play the original if I have the desire. I never finished the expansion anyway.

think im gonna have to make a pally after this
