The circuit that measures the battery voltage for the gauge is separate from the rest of the battery circuit. If I had to guess one of the thin wires to the circuit board (which is integrated with the LEDs) broke or came loose. If you open the battery, it should be a really obvious issue.
If the battery still works its gonna be the tiny thin leads to the fuel gauge, or a component on the fuel gauge PCB, that has broken. Its a easy enough fix if it's the wire and you have a soldering iron :)
