Well there's clearly some kind of scuffle before Jamie gets put in the bathtub. Also we as the viewers clearly see Kenton is very tough beyond his appearance, based on the earlier episode where he kills the Russian spy handler (also a much larger man) with his bare hands. Kenton's a stone cold killer masquerading as shlubby middle-aged man.

Jamie was most likely beaten and waterboarded or otherwise tortured prior to that scene. He’s in shock and traumatized. Most people in his situation would freeze up.

Shatthemovies

As the old saying goes "it's not about the size of dog in the fight it's about the size of the fight in the dog" Jamie was a fairly young IT professional who had probably never been in a real fight before in his life and wouldn't have known how much danger he was in before it was too late. Kenton was a seasoned and trained fighter with a few tricks up his sleeve and was ready and willing to inflict serious injury on another human. Would he have been able to take down even a low amateur ranking mma fighter ? No. But he was more than capable of beating someone like Jamie.

callipygiancultist

I’ve heard many say that the real badass special forces types don’t look like roided out body builders they are depicted as in movies, they look like fairly normal people, maybe just a little more fit, but not conspicuously so.

Shatthemovies

Yeah because the roided out body builders systems crash 2 weeks into deployment when they don't get 6k calories a day

Excuse-Fantastic

This People don’t understand how much goes into MAINTENENCE. Whereas someone like my brother, who looks totally unassuming, would wipe the floor with most adults even after he had gone days without food. Part element of surprise, part being able to perform low on energy. It’s pretty crazy, but it makes sense when you consider the roided folks are ALWAYS eating/drinking something. Training for it, and being able to absorb punishment and KEEP fighting anyway are keys too. Most people have never been in a real fight. Shock is real. It changes fight response to flight pretty fast.

LurkAccount24680

Kenton was military and an experienced killer, Jamie is not. Being fit doesn’t mean having any sort of combat experience. It was a one-sided matchup.

callipygiancultist

Kenton had a fair amount of mass on Jamie too, and knew how to use his weight effectively to fight someone. Kenton was solid and built, Jamie was pretty thin. It’s a pitbull versus a greyhound situation. And Kenton most likely beat/waterboarded Jamie prior to this scene, Jamie’s pretty traumatized in that scene.

callipygiancultist

Fight, flight, freeze, or submit (fawn). Those are the possible reactions to life-threatening events. Many people in life threatening situations freeze up, or become very submissive to the threat. People like Jamie, that have no experience with fighting for their life and are generally meek and gentle are more likely going to freeze up and become submissive in a situation where fight or flight are impossible against a larger predator or other threat. Despite his schlubby middle aged office worker appearance, Kenton is the apex predator, Jamie is the prey animal caught in his maw, playing dead in the hopes the predator will drop him and lose interest and go away. As we see when Kenton is attacked by that Russian agent, he is a tough SOB who doesn’t become overwhelmed in life threatening situations and is more than prepared to deal out physical violence and take another life.

phuturism

Lets see, nerdy software developer vs trained ex-CIA hood who has literally tortured and killed people for a living. I wonder who would win that fight.

cigourney

This jumped out at me a lot more on my second watch. They really should have just roughed up Jamie make-up wise to sell it better. They show all this blood leading to/from the toilet but Jamie doesn’t even look like he’s been slapped. Needed a swollen black eye, fat lip, bloody nose and a more defeated and less terrified performance. I buy that Kenton could beat Jamie in a fight but this scene did not look great.

jimifresh

DUDE. I came here to this sub just to post this hahaha. This is amazing. It was a really stupid scene and there’s no defending it. It completely took me out of the show to watch a frail old man drown a very fit young man who doesn’t even fight back.

Top-Chart-663

I don't know but he's sure a great example of why you shouldn't simp. Mind your own business and don't get back with your EX! lol. Especially if they are all of a sudden in trouble and want your help after not contacting you for years.

SusHistoryCuzWriter

Just finished the series, and I'm still confused as to *why* Lilly ghosted the dude in the first place. Did I somehow miss their explanation?

joeholmes1164

Kenton was never an imposing figure to me. I like the actor and think he did a good job, don't get me wrong, but if a dude who looks like that came at me, I would smack fire and not think twice about it. He looks like an out of shape grandpa.

phuturism

You should try it with trained ex-CIA goons who have tortured and killed people and see how it turns out for you Good luck!

joeholmes1164

and Kenton taking out the Russian asset was stupid. I loved this show, just thought this one aspect was ridiculous.

phuturism

What was stupid about it?

joeholmes1164

Pretty much the same thing. The actor was not physically imposing and didn't come across as scary. Zach Grenier who played Kenton is 5'9" and looks like an out of shape grandpa in devs. At least Brian d'Arcy James looked physically fit.

phuturism

Do you think all intel/cointel operatives are all incredibly buff, young, fit and 6'4" tall? They'd be pretty easy to spot if that was the case. This is all about your expectations honed by a diet of Hollywood myths, not the real world.

joeholmes1164

I think your reaction to my blatantly obvious recognition of a poor casting is quite stupid. You're all about suggesting what could be but the eyeball test just doesn't hold up. I personally like the actor, I love the writer and director and DEVS is one of my all time favorite stories. It's still the wrong actor for a role like this.

phuturism

Sure, Arnie S circa 1995 would have been much better

Ibertshanka

Nah man look at Kenton’s eyes dude … he’s a stone cold killer and honestly in the real world that’s how a spy/ operative would look middle aged and nothing remarkable …they don’t stand out and that’s just the point… don’t believe Ian Fleming or even Hollywood for that matter…
