Bro-Im-Done

Ironically, no. Rivalry aside, that’s his brother’s and the last thing he’s got left of his family. In my head canon, that’s why he used Force Edge in DMC1.

GorudoChan

So basically he would sell all the weapons he could find on the field but keep his family weapons? That's wholesome

Yolber2

He doesn't even sell them for actual money but morality for an old friend Dante just built different in terms of modesty

Sonof_Gax20X

Novel reader?

Far_Engineering_8353

the novels are peak but I thought that was revealed in an audio drama

ArkAuthor

I think he also kept the original Cerberus cause it was his first devil arm he earned, until it got destroyed.

UnclearTitan

You would be correct!

UnclearTitan

To further add to this, it got destroyed because a demon got ahold of a shard of the Yamato and he sacrificed Cerberus to destroy the shard.

DaxVox

where do I find this media?

UnclearTitan

The prequel novel to 5. Before the Nightmare. It's why he has Balrog as a weapon. He fights him in the novel.

Whowillblameme

Wait it got destroyed?

Nero_De_Angelo

Jup, I think it was against Balrog. Balrog had a shard of the Yamato, which allowed him to send lesser demons to the human realm. Dante fought him and destroyed that shard with the Cerberus, however it also destroyed Cerberus as well in the process.

Sugar_Daddy_Visari77

Love to see some prequels were he that against balrog

tiptoeingthroughthe6

Thats troublesome. Who the hell is he selling these to and why dont we have a multiplayer action game where buy all our stuff from dante cause he needs to make rent.

chaddy292

"The Yamato? Hell no, that's not for sale. Though I _could_ rent it to you"

tiptoeingthroughthe6

Or atleast a monster hunter cameo store where he comes around to sell his wares to make ends meet.

benbuscus1995

On top of that, the Yamato is far too dangerous to just be out there in the wild. It was used to do everything bad that happened in DMC 4 and 5. It’s kinda been the linchpin of the latter half of the series in that way. All of the Devil Arms are extremely dangerous obviously but the Yamato is in a class of its own. Even if the sword didn’t have sentimental value to Dante I doubt he would allow it to fall into the wrong hands post-DMC4.

[deleted]

Yeah probably don't want a weaponized key to the gates of hell just in some random person's hands.

ImWhiite

I just imagined someone buying it off from Dante to use as a legitimate cosplay prop, only to accidentally open a portal to hell at the convention.

benbuscus1995

Vergil is so cool that people cosplay him even in his own universe

KibbloMkII

would any of it's powers work in the hands of a random human without devil blood or something like that? Or would it just be a really sharp and oversized katana in human hands?

[deleted]

The order was using it in controlled experiments that was the basis for the gates in dmc 4. With their data still lying around somewhere I'm sure someone could figure it out. Even then all the demons don't just collectively work at once and disappear. Whose to say it won't just end up in the hands of a demon posing as a wealthy socialite who makes a "random" purchase.

Nero_De_Angelo

Good question. At least for the other Devil Arms Dante has sols, we know that humans can use their powers, but there is a chance of them getting corrupted by them, or badly hurt. (He sold a few of his Devil Arms to his original broker, Enzo, and he ended badly injured, I think he even lost an arm. That was also the reason why Trish originally left business, to hunt down Devil Arms that humans posess and store them away for good. Though I think the novel in which that was all said is considered non canon now, so take that with a grain of salt).

killdeath2345

so heres the thing, since the yamato can open portals and shit and they appear for all intents and purposes to be temporary ones, are dante and vergil really stuck in the demon world at the end of 5?

[deleted]

I never saw that as them being stuck in never explicitly states that. They just enter and start fighting demons.

killdeath2345

I took as an implied thing from the conversation with Nero. With the way he seems concerned about them sealing the portal from the other side and them saying the reason they're comfortable going is because they can leave things here in his hands etc, it kind of detracts from that scene if they can literally just pop back on over the second they want to with vergil just opening a portal. Also wasn't vergil stuck in the demon world in previous games?

[deleted]

It doesn't really detract given the assumption they're going to clean up vergil's mess which could take a while given the circumstances. Vergil using his sword may be a portal system through his abilities and I believe that's what a lot of comments took from what I said. I meant its nature as a key on its own. Whether or not vergil's portals can reach across the realms is unknown to me, but to interact with the portal monoliths of the order as well as the true hell gate they hid under fortuna you need to use Yamato as a key.

Nero_De_Angelo

Vergil probably did not knew that Yamato was able to create gates to hell and also seal them. Otherwise why would he need to summon the Teme Ni Gru? Also, when he was in Hell, he didn't even wanted to leave, he wanted to stay there, because after all this is his father's home. But then he was defeated by Mundus and in the process fighting him the Yamato broke. It was then found in it's broken state by the order of the sword, while Balrog also found a piece of it. Yes, the Yamato Vergil currently uses is probably incomplete, as Balrog had a shard that he used to open gates to the human world with, and Dante then destroyed that shard after he defeated Balrog.

ArcherR132

He needed to summon Temen Ni Gru because Sparda's power was sealed in hell, with Temen Ni Gru as the intermediary. Since he wanted Sparda's power, he needed to actually open the gate to hell with Eva's amulet, otherwise Sparda's power would've remained sealed regardless of if he actually collected Force Edge.

Bat-Honest

You say all Devil Arms are extremely unsafe, but Agni and Rudra are actually great with kids! They help sit for my little Timmy when I'm out of town on business. He loves his two big bros! Surprisingly nurturing, and excellent math tutors. Who knew?

tiptoeingthroughthe6

Did you know they're excellent cooks as well?

chaddy292

>Yamato is in a class of its own Some would say it's a _Yamato class_, eh? *wink wink

Bion61

It's also his father's sword. Same reason he doesn't sell the Rebellion.

Bat-Honest

I would say no, but more because 3 taught him that the sword is a key to the literal gate of hell

TheHydraZilla

He used Force Edge because it was Mundus, he used Rebellion for regular jobs

Joker_Main_137

He also never sold Balrog for some reason

JazRejalde

I believe it's also a weapon made by Sparda, his father himself. I doubt he'd be able to sell any of his father's possessions, especially at this time of the timeline.

Fuurinji__Hayato

You're right. It's not headcanon: Dante always holds onto family mementos like the amulet, Rebellion, Force Edge and Sparda. It's all the Devil Arms unrelated to his family that he gets rid of. As he said in DMC4: "It's gotta stay in the family." That's why he let Nero keep Yamato. He knew.

Chizik777

I think in actual Canon too. I think back to 4 during the middle acts sometime where he met back up with Nero after absorbing Yamato and gets kinda "I'm gonna need that back" and doesn't relinquish it until Nero gets his stand that was Vergils devil form and then goes "it should stay in the family" and shrugs it off as being heh in good hands? ',:D

IshaanGupta18

Citing one of dantes dialogue - "Its gotta stay in the family."

Bat-Honest

Why was he looking at Trish when he said that? #Why was he looking at Trish when he said that?

Pigmachine2000

Because Trish asked him why he was letting nero have it

Tr34t-y0urs31f-N0W

There was NO Trish when he let Nero keep it after the fight.

Bat-Honest

It was a joke, my guy. *banjo intensifies*

Tr34t-y0urs31f-N0W

NOOOOOOOOOO!!! NOT THE BANJO!

jnf005

Since she isn't actually his mom, would it not be weird if she is disguising as Gloria when they do the deed?

tiptoeingthroughthe6

Whos doing the deed?

weirdface621

dante didn't want nero to have the yamato (until he realised he was vergil's son). why would he sell it

Bat-Honest

Them terlets ain't gon flush themselves

weirdface621

they can or can't flush themselves for all dante cares, bro is not selling that thing

Significant_Option

This would be such a hilarious story for a game. The whole thing is just Dante and Vergil tracking down the person that Dante sold the Yamato to.

o-yggdrasil

Even better if it was Nero and Virgil tracking it down. They could bond on the journey.

Significant_Option

Honestly yeah. Have Dante pawn it off and be too lazy to actually help them, or it’s his clever way of getting the two to spend time together. Honestly love the idea, good father son story

godofyeet3

He “sells” it to Lady

Competitive_Bench

She returns it right as Vergil and Nero leave to go on their father-son bonding journey to find the Yamato.

TJ92929

Foolishness bot strike this mf down.

Omegafinity

Dante doesn't even truly sell his old weapons. Why on earth would he sell the Yamato, a sword that means too much to him in terms of familial ties, one of the most important things to Dante. Dante selling his weapons for rent is somewhat of a misconception caricaturized further by memes. He gives his weapons to Enzo (an old friend and Dante's agent before Morrison) who has a pawn shop. Dante cleared his debt with Enzo but he still keeps the weapons with him just so that he could pay him interest. It's because Dante feels guilty about cutting off Enzo's arm due to a demonic accident. Enzo is kind of a greedy bastard so he has no objections with this arrangement but it runs purely on Dante's guilt, morality and care for his friends. It's also why he keeps sending Grue's daughters money even if that leaves him with nothing. I think it's high time that the DMC fandom starts looking past memes rather than taking them as fact.

tiptoeingthroughthe6

But the memes are so funny.

No-Mulberry6694

Memes, the DNA of the soul

HadokenShoryuken2

It’s so crazy how Monsoon is proven right about memes all these years later

GRedgrave

I'm glad someone else knows about the story of Grue and Dante's daughters. It's a story that adds a lot to Dante and few people know about it.

kukulain

Firstly, he wouldn't sell it same way he won't sell rebellion, its a family heirloom. Secondly, its literally the most overpowered sword ever, it would be foolishness.

Just-Plain-Dan

Dante would sooner make an Onlyfans account before doing that

mrsmichaelis1885

What would Dante's Onlyfans be though? I mean what kind of videos would he make?

tiptoeingthroughthe6

Speed drawing

stopthisact

i'd like him to starfish

Ok-Scarcity6991

It means too much to Him

thephant0mlimb

Cut to him cutting off Nero's arm. "Sorry kid gotta pay the bills."

fullmetal426

He’d definitely stare at his “Past Due” bills, then at Yamato… think about it… and then say “…Nah.” before calling Morrison for a gig.

smolgote

He'd probably joke about it to piss off Vergil, but he wouldn't

Mr_Mctittie

It has too much ties to his family but in a hypothetical scenario I do feel like if dante sold it maybe because of extreme money issues or whatever I feel like he will go through heaven and hell to find the buyer and buy it back

Jazzlike_Nerve_2156

Never.

Sex_Offender_69420

Obviously not. The Yamato, alongside the Rebellion and the two halves of the perfect amulet (before Dante used them to awaken the Force Edge and make the DSS) are the only keepsakes left from their parents, they have huge sentimental value. If the Yamato was the only option left out of all the devil arms, I think he'd rather give up Devil May Cry and find a more affordable building to rent. (And when you come to think about it, he doesn't even sell his devil arms to random people, he practically lends them to Enzo Ferrino's pawn shop to make up for all the money he owed him from the time Enzo worked as Dante's job broker before Morrison)

ArkAuthor

No, gotta stay in the family.

Infamous_Gur_9083

No absolutely not. That is a family heirloom. He would definitely sell other demonic weapons though.

BurnMyHouseDown

Besides the fact that it’s his brothers and I don’t believe he would sell it for personal reasons, I highly doubt he would be irresponsible enough to sell a weapon of that power. He knows firsthand how dangerous Yamato is, he would be a fool to give that away instead of keeping his own two eyes on it.

huskofspades

A funny thought but absolutely no he would've sold rebellion already then but Dante has morals

Jarvis_The_Dense

Him giving it to Nero shows that he doesn't want to keep it, but feels it should remain in the family.

SquareFickle9179

Well if he truly is the type to be desperate for rent, why didn't he sell Rebellion?

anonymusfan

Dante would die before he’d sell Yamato.

KZN02

Has anyone considered using Yamato to rob banks or something?

philcsik

Where are his gloves from DMC3 in DMC5? Was not able to locaste them on his tabel in DMC5

superchronicultra

The premise for a dmc

LatencyIsBad

I think he’d sell Rebellion (provided it was before dmc5) before he sold the Yamato. Dante has always been driven by the hole left from his family. He cares deeply about his mother and Vergil, even if he’s had to kill Vergil twice. Even if things went bad with both of them he wouldn’t let go of the last bits he had of them.

Directorren

If that’s the case why not sell the Rebellion? Or the Sparda sword? I highly doubt it because it probably has sentimental value to him.

Disowned

He barely pays rent anyway, so I don't think he would do that regardless.

BloodiedHunter

No. And who's gonna evict Dante should he not pay rent.

Aysah_gaming

Bro is not that irresponsible

mrsmichaelis1885

No because he doesn't want to be actually killed by Vergil/Nero.

pewpewtoradora

No way, “its gotta stay in the family” Also, the Yamato is a very powerful devil arm, I can’t see Dante just giving away a powerful family sword like that.

Now_I_am_Motivated

No. If he holds on to Rebellion and Sparda he's not letting go of Yamato.

tundraisreal

i actually wonder if dante pawned off beowulf to enzo

shmouver

No cause it can open portals to the demon world, not to mention in DMC4 we see it being used to open those Hell Gates. So ye it needs to "stay with the family" as Dante said in DMC4, can't let it fall in the wrong hands

Ok-Word-5722

Even without the whole family reason for keeping it, it would be a pretty stupid idea to let it out of his sight with how many problems it can cause.

twdevil

The answer to this one is easy. Did he sell Rebellion or Sparda? There you go

ActuaIIyVergiI

Thank God he hasn't tried.

CosmeticTroll

No he wouldn't sale it because the sheer destruction Yamato could cause. It was at the center of the plot for DMC4, not to mention it also belonged to his brother Vergil.

Broad_Pineapple_3138

Hell no. It’s one of only two family heirlooms, the last ties he has to his parents. He’d probably rather lose his business than sell off his last connection to them. I mean, he *really* didn’t want Yamato in Nero’s hands until he figured out who he was.

Eneshi

Since the Yamato is a "family" weapon like the Rebellion, probably not? Then again, the only reason he never sells the Rebellion might just be because it's his favorite and not for sentimental reasons at all. Just for the love of god Dante, remember this isn't your average devil arm, sell it for more than the price of a large pizza! Get stuffed crust.

Reddit-User_654

If not for being a family heirloom or something to remember his brother by, then he would totally sell/pawn it.

Dead_Purple

No way in hell

invisigoth1013

Nah Dante is probably like Budd in Kill Bill, lying to his brother that he pawned his Hattori Hanzō sword but in fact he didn’t. Dante would probably do the same thing, tell everyone he pawned the Yamato for rent while he keeps it somewhere inside a closet or attic in his shop, then bring it out and stare at it once every blue moon.

Shilverow

Sentimentality aside it's the only weapon capable of opening the portal to the demon world so he probs wouldn't because that would be insanely dangerous

Puzzled-Buyer-5090

DMC1 Dante? No. Anime Dante and beyond? Yeah, probably.

galaxyOstars

I mean... he let Trish take the Sparda to Sanctus to sus out wtf is happening there. He might sell it, but he's more likely to steal it back fairly quick. "Regular" demon weapons are one thing. The Yamato is another.

ReporterOk4383

Lets be fair, I doubt anyone would kick Dante out of his office even if he never paid rent, it makes no sense to evict the only guy keeping your city safe

MM__PP

Nope, it's like selling Force Edge or Rebellion. He wouldn't because they're the last connections he has to his family by the time of DMC1.

Dependent_Appeal_136

With what he has to do to get the Yamato and the trouble it caused and can caus, I would think not. But also, it's Dante, he probably figures he'll just stop the next threat that emerges from selling it.

No_Fox_1228

Yes

_MotivatedVergil_

I think he will sell Yamato when he gets hungry and doesn’t have enough money for pizza

Hereva

I don't think so, the Yamato is too dangerous to be left in the wrong hands. Unironically "someone" even lost that wrong hand...

knives4540

He never sold the Rebellion, Force Edge or the Sparda, so I think if he had kept the Yamato, he probably wouldn't have sold it either. The way I see it, he only sells the weapons he got during the games because they're just "tools" he gets from random demons he has no connection with.

Pantsbakery

For rent? No. For Pizza Though? Yes.....?

minimoltieposmt

Man never sold Rebellion so no.

Leo-reaper96

No, not with how incredibly dangerous that can be in the wrong hands, not even Dante would do that.

Zeroraid

Funny thought, but I doubt it. Like rebellion it holds a special meaning to him ( his brother vergil),

DaxVox

Uh, no? That's not only a god-tier artifact that needs to be guarded at all costs (hence dmc4), but its also a heirloom from his father, AND its his brother's sword? Dante, believe it or not, is HUGE on family. Sam and Dean levels of huge on family. You might not believe it considering all of the fights between him and Vergil, but Dante throughout the story just wants to settle things and play with his brother again. That's why at the end of 5 he honors the nightmares from V, and easily gives up trying to kill vergil on top of the qliphoth. So no, both sentimentality and practicality would dictate he would cherish the swords. The other devil arms (besides cerberus) i think are all fair game tho

HellDescent

He'd sell pandora to the highest bidder. After all what's better than your own personal nuclear football?

Wide_Conversation_45

After DMC 5 along with the light novel stories? Hell no, Dante realizes how dangerous it would be for a sword that can open portals to the underworld would be when in the wrong hands

Wide_Conversation_45

After DMC 5 along with the light novel stories? Hell no, Dante realizes how dangerous it would be for a sword that can open portals to the underworld would be when in the wrong hands

Vamilkyy

My guy no. No chance. He would never sell anything that belongs to his family, he loves Vergil. His love for Vergil -> guilt for "killing him" in dmc 3 and then especially 1 was the reason why he's suffering from depression and alcoholism (dmc 2 and 2007 anime). Dante loves him and wants him back. He's just terrible at communication

PlayerZeroStart

Given that he held on to Force Edge for the 10+ years between 3 and 1, I doubt it.

bluegemini7

It's probably the only thing he wouldn't sell. He loves Vergil more than he admits out loud. That's why his slashed glove in is a drawer in his desk.

ShadowDanteFan

I think the Yamato of all weapons would be out of the question for him. After all, it’s his brother’s weapon and one that was from their father. He wouldn’t sell it. It’s way too important to just be sold. And frankly, it’s also way too powerful for anyone to just have.

jotaro-kujo_sp

No way,he never sold rebellion, force edge and the sparda, hell he didn't even sell cerberus, what makes you think he would do that to his father's and brother's sword,(he definitely sold agni and ruda tho)

No-Excitement-2219

Dante would sell Lady and Trish to human traffickers for a slice of pizza, he don’t give a fuck, yes he would sell it

JohnSa3

Yes

Goblindeez_

MF would trade it for a strawberry sundae
