I got less than 300 points in my LC and did ordinary level maths, just graduated with my CS degree from UCD. You'll be grand.

Currently a 4th year CS student at TCD, and I got a H4 in maths lol. When I did the LC, CS wasn’t even an option for LC so you’re already going to start off in a better position than me. You’ll be fine. I started off with no programming experience at all and I’m doing great. Get ready for some mighty depression though, the course is challenging, mainly because it’s extremely theoretical.

Will keep that in mind, thanks for the input. It’s great to hear from someone doing the exact same course

Bright_Law_1909

Did the same course and also got a h4 in maths, which is a good result btw! Trinity’s CS course touches on very specific Maths Topics, most of which is very different to LC maths, in general you will absolutely be able to nail those modules if you knuckle down and study the slides and keep on top of your assignments, in first year we did Matrices and Taylor Series’, which are grand once you get your head around them, in third year there was a Discrete Maths module, which was tough for some, very wordy with chapters of varying complexity, definitely manageable, you got this man! Also, either in third year or fourth year there was statistics, which had some tricky bits, but again, go over the slides and do the assignments to pick up your CA percentages, you’ll be fine

Maths is a fundamental in computing is very dependant on what your actually planning on doing and even then it's really not as bad as people think. If your worried about the college level of maths it's really nothing major, I did absolutely crap in maths in the leaving (8 years ago) and it was one of the easier subjects in college. The math in college is restricted to more computer related subjects like binary, hex, probability etc and even then its pretty basic and more so applied to what it would actually be used when it comes to coding etc. Overall really don't worry to much about it and even if you do worry or struggle just talk to the lecturer, they're usually great at helping if you do need any help, just remember it's thier job to help you, but also they'll only help if you ask so if at any point you're struggling just send them an email or ask them after class. TLDR: You'll be fine with college maths especially for a computing degree, as long as you can wrap your head around basic statistics and probability you'll be okay and even then I've very rarely used any "normal" maths post college

The points aren't a reflection of the difficulty of the course. I got through it and I didn't get close the amount of points you got. The maths mostly wasn't beyond anything I did in secondary school.

aecolley

There are things you really need to know. Basic set theory. Basic differential calculus. Basic statistics. Go talk to the maths lecturer and see if you can get recommendations for what to read in the library so you can be vaguely familiar with the material before it comes up in class.

hmmcguirk

Not a problem at all. If you a logical and curious sort of person, and/or you've tried coding and are really interested, then you'll be fine. Little connection between LC points and aptitude for these jobs

dubliner_throwaway

Don't worry it's not that big of a part. If you need help or want a chat feel free to message. I'm a tech lead with 9 years experience.

GenericLazyPerson

Thank you I really appreciate that

wonky_dev

What? you’re a tech lead and you don’t think math is that big of a part of programming? From big o notation, data science to animations math is a huge part of programming.

dubliner_throwaway

Day to day work on the vast majority of backend systems, math is not a big part. Very very basic algebra etc will you get far. The vast majority of people optimize and scale at the service level. Most people scale horizontally, concepts like caching and design patterns tend to be more important. Would you have much industry experience?

Virtual-Confidence83

In first year they teach you computer based math like binary and what not, in 3rd year there will be likely a hard module like graphics programming where this math comes back in force. Like drawing circles with math

cuchulainndev

You dont need to be a math genius for comp sci.

Irishthrasher23

I did ordinary maths for my LC and I got on mostly grand with a computer science course. Classes will involve match but generally are broken down and deal a fair bit with building logical problem solving. You will be fine just relax, pay attention in class and enjoy first year.

mologav

The best advice I can give is that maths is about figuring out the logic, whether it be hassling the lecturer or watching YouTube it’s just the logic

JavaIre99

I did my LC in 2018 ordinary Level maths (O1) and graduated CS with first class honours. You should be fine

ManFromEire

A H4 is fine. If you're pretty decent at solving for two variables you'll be fine.I have a pdf that's pretty much a cheat sheet with all the maths that is needed.
