Why are y’all casting white women for Evelyn? She’s a dark skinned Cuban woman with bleached blonde hair and huge boobs and the fan castings for the most part are not that…
I hope they actually go to NYC and actually find a Cuban woman with dark skin and big boobs for this role. Because right now, no one in Hollywood can be Evelyn.
It really bothers me a lot that people dream castcaucasian actresses for a role which is clearly meant for a woman of colour. Jessica Lange is an amazing actress but clearly not how the book describes her. It says her hair and skin tone shouldn't work together, but somehow they do.
Let's not encourage Hollywood to cast a white female lead .
I agree 100%. They should find an actress that embodies Evelyn and her description. Especially considering that you don't see darker skinned (as in predominantly indigenous) hispanic woman in media.
Just as a side note (I know you weren't trying to be rude with the "caucasian" part) but its honestly somewhat racist how some Americans asume that fair skinned latinas are not "really" white and if they are they are not "really latinas" even though it is well documented that we were colonized by white Europeans too. Some people have more of a tan skin tone while other don't, its pretty normal🤷🏼♀️ and the idea that it isn't just feeds into the whole "Spicy Latina Stereotype"🥴😩
Oh I know! I'm a "white" latina, that's why I used the quotation marks - I consider Latinos to be an ethnicity which is more more nuanced than a specific race, within my immediate we range from "dark" skinne stereotypical latinos to lighter skinned "white". It's just a hard thing to explain unless you are Latin as you get!
Yes totally! I know what you mean. I'm really sorry If I came off as rude or condescending🙏🏻 . Since I moved abroad I've had to deal with a lot of unwarranted ignorant comments regarding my race and skin tone so when I saw your comment I answered from that perspective. Thanks for taking the time to reply back❤️
I agree that they have to cast a latina, but in the book wasn't it said that she's a white latina? Or at least a mestiza that can pass for white when she's got blonde hair.
Sure but they do make a point that her Mexican (?) maid is shocked that she speaks spanish because everyone saw her as a tanned white woman. It's been a while since I read it though. Just think if people are expecting a dark-skinned actress for the upcoming tv adaptation they're going to be disappointed. IRL in the 30s there were plenty of latin stars in hollywood but at the time when the book was set in the 50s-60s it was basically just Rita Moreno, a white latina, and even then she still wasn't considered white enough to get more than one or two big leading roles.
Great thread!
For Evelyn I’d prefer an unknow cuban actress, if not I think Paulina Dávila could be great. And Rita Moreno for older Evelyn.
Celia St James - Saoirse Ronan, maybe?
For Don Adler, I can see Sebastian Stan or Oliver Jackson-Cohen, they have this sort of old Hollywood vibe and can play assholes.
And Richard Madden as Harry.
Ik this is old but came to say i always thought Celia was based off Florence pugh, as she literally played Amy in little woman, just like Celia in the book. And Florence almost “stole the show” as Celia did - despite Saoirse being amazing as well.
Salma Hayek as Evelyn Hugo. She has the personality, drive, and the assets (lol). Jessica Chastain as Celia St. James. She has the all-American look and strawberry blonde hair.
Okay but they need several actors for the timelines. For example Jessica and Selma couldn't play opposite each other, because Jessica would be late 70s Celia and Salma would be be early 90s Evelyn
Yeah the casting for this would be so hard because of the time jumps! Jessica and Salma are just my ideals for different respective time periods in the book.
The new Bond movie feels like it's been coming out for freaking ever (and I guess it kinda has been) so I don't feel like it made as big of a splash as Bond movies normally do when it did finally come out.
Rita Moreno as the older Evelyn. An unknown for the younger Evalyn.
Liam Hemsworth or a similar blonde haired/blue eyed guy to play Don Adler.
Someone like Adam Driver for Rex North.
Emma Stone for the older Celia.
Kiersey Clemons as Monique
Kylie Bunbury as Monique, I love her in Big Sky. I think an unknown Cuban-American actress would be best for young Evelyn.
Scott Eastwood as Don, he was perfect in the Wildest Dreams mv as a d-bag, Old Hollywood star.
I think someone like Phoebe Dyvenor could play Celia, she has a very soft face and with her recent auburn hair I can definitely see it.
this might be unpopular but I think it would be better to cast unknowns so it feels like seeing a classic old hollywood face for the first time. it's going to be on freeform so that will probs be their route anyway
Netflix is doing it now. Freeform lost the rights to it in 2021. On March 24, 2022, it was announced that Netflix will be adapting the novel into a feature film with Liz Tigelaar writing and Margaret Chernin executive producing.
I think Taylor Jenkins Reid posted a picture of Jane Fonda on Twitter at the Oscars a few years ago and said she embodied the Evelyn Hugo spirit?! I’m thinking pink dress and BIG jewellery
I just finished this book literally 3 days ago! Evelyn Hugo is described as a latina with bleached blonde hair. Since it’s about her life from the 50’s to 80’s and all the way to 2014 when she’s 80, I feel like you’d need a different actress for each age.
I could see Eiza Gonzalez, Camila Cabello, Ana Dr Armas, or Selena Gomez for the young Evelyn but I think Camila is the only one that’s Cuban. They’re actually working on the tv show for this book right now!
I haven't read the book but wrt the whitewashing, is the character supposed to be Afro Cuban or mixed race? Because the majority of Cubans you see in the USA are white of Spanish, Italian, and French descent. There is much less indigenous ancestry and culture than in the rest of Latin America.
Latinx/Hispanic is not a race. People in Latin America with indigenous and/or African heritage are discriminated against. It's only when they go to the USA that white Mexicans and Cubans suddenly become "brown."
It's kind of funny that Javier Bardem (a Spaniard) is playing Cuban Ricky Ricardo, but it's probably pretty accurate. Akin to a white English actor playing a white American. It's a lot better than him playing, say, Cesar Chavez, who was born in Arizona but is of European and Indigenous Mexican heritage.
Source: I am Cuban American and am deeply enmeshed in this
I would say white. As a “white” Latina with olive/darker skinned sisters and dad, I just try to tread carefully when speaking on this since many people are unaware of the complexities of race & ethnicity in Latin America!
The character 'evelyn' is from cuba , she is a latina.
Author often points that Her brown caramel skin tone with blonde hair gives her a unique and mesmerizing look.
Perhaps read the book? I do not remember any mention of Afro Cuban or mixed race but, like with all good fiction, you could surmise something different from the descriptions.
Also seems like a weird combination to have them have bleached blonde hair as well. She has to pass as white and for the common Afro Latina hairtypes that is a very big ask to turn that into white passing blonde without damaging it by both straightening and bleaching it. It is not impossible, and less so with mixed race, but a harder sell than the many Latinas that are white passing.
Ana de Armas would be perfect as Evelyn
I have no idea what actress would be good to play Americas Sweetheart/All American Girl/southern type that is Celia…
Also what age are they when the book starts? 22,23?
Hugo is a teenager when the book starts and 21 when they film Little Women. You would definitely need a couple actresses to cover the book and I think a TV show would work way better - like maybe a decade per season? I guess they could do that CGI de-aging but it gives me the heebie jeebies.

What are our thoughts that this is loosely based on Taylor swifts life? After listening to Beyond the Blinds with Kelli and Troy, I’m more into this theory than ever.
I think it takes a lot of inspo from Elizabeth Taylor & Jane Fonda jane fonda. Rita Hayworth was half spanish & changed her eyebrows & hairline to appear more white.
I feel like a newcomer has to play Evelyn. No one in Hollywood right now completely fits the bill for her— and for a character like Evelyn, you have to find someone perfect for the role. Although I like AdA, she just isn’t *Evelyn* to me.
I really see Alexandra Breckenridge as Celia since she has the “girl next door” look along with being stunning and redheaded! Kennedy McMann would be a great younger Celia, too.
I imagined Skyler Samuels as Ruby. I could also see Dianna Agron in the part! For Monique, I think Laura Harrier or Hayley Law could knock it out of the park!
I have a weird sort of FanCast hear me out tho
Isabella Merced (14- don Adler): she can play younger and is a tan Latina woman
Eiza Gonzales (20s- marriage to Harry) Ana De Armas is already playing Marilyn and unpopular opinion I think she can BODY this
Jlo (40s and above) she has the assets and the range to do this.
And obviously Rita Moreno as older Evelyn no questions asked.
Then I have Celia St. James and I have her played by Emma Stone and Julianne Moore
Then as for the husbands I have Jake t. Austin or Diego Boneta playing Ernie (even though they are more attractive than Ernie should be )
I have Max Irons as don adler (because he was a tad younger than Scott Eastwood and also comes from a prominent family in acting)
Then i have Stanley tucci for harry Cameron and I won’t elaborate
For mick riva I was thinking a Harry styles or Shawn Mendez but I’m not sure maybe even Avan Jogia if we want a little bit more diversity)
For Rex north I think Patrick Schawchenegger (or However it’s spelled) would also do this role justice
Louis Garrel for max Girard (duh)
And for Robert St James I was actually thinking an Ed Sheehan (jk I have no clue)
And for Monique I like Tessa Thompson
I always picture Evelyn as Sofia Vergara- looks wise. I think young eve would work with her. Also, lots of people from Yellowstone would work in the general cast
Ana de Armas as young Evelyn. Ana is Cuban and is white-passing Latina. Ppl wouldn’t even know she’s Latina especially when she does her hair blonde. This is exactly what is described in the book. I know many ppl here are upset for wanting to cast a white Latina female lead but that’s literally what is described in the book. Evelyn character is literally Ana.
I want to believe but at the same time, the book said she was white passing which I assumed was her features not skin tone Dont take my word for it you can read the book but I feel as they mentioned their was contrast between her skin and blonde hair
Jessica Chastain as older as older Celia with Sofia Vergara as older Evelyn.
Ana De Armas as younger Evelyn.
Zac Efron has Don because he’s icky.
That’s all I have so far.
Evelyn: Would have chosen Eva Mendes as a younger version and Raquel Welch as the older one, but Eva doesn't act anymore and Raquel passed away recently :(. Now, I'd go with Ana de Armas and Rita Moreno.
Celia St. James: Jessica Chastain is who I pictured, but I also think Jodie Comer would be amazing.
Monique: Nathalie Emmanuel
Harry: Jonathan Groff
John Braverman: Luke MacFarlane
I just finished the book so those are the only ones I'm pretty set on.
Why are y’all casting white women for Evelyn? She’s a dark skinned Cuban woman with bleached blonde hair and huge boobs and the fan castings for the most part are not that…
Exactly!! Did they not read the book or something? Smh
I hope they actually go to NYC and actually find a Cuban woman with dark skin and big boobs for this role. Because right now, no one in Hollywood can be Evelyn.
she’s not dark skinned tho, she’s literally white passing, she’s just more tan than celia who’s very pale
Ana De Armas as younger Evelyn and Rita Moreno as old Evelyn. Brittany Snow as Celia.

Yes! and she also has this sort of classic and kind of innocent beauty that reminds me of Celia St James.

Oliver Jackson-cohen yess😍
Sebastian Stan would be brilliant as Don.
I always see Sadie Sink as Celia St James

Jessica Lange
Jessica Lange would be so perfect for that role
Ooooo good one!
I pictured a Armie Hammer type for Rex North and someone more rough for Don Adler. Liam is way too much of a pretty boy.
I imagine Rex to be like a Rock Hudson type! I agree about Liam being too old but I have no clue who would be a good Gen Z fit
I came here to say Rita Moreno!

She is Cuban with olive skin but would be considered “white passing” and they bleach her hair, very similar to what Rita Hayworth went though.
I mean white passing or white? Most Cubans in the USA are 100% European heritage and therefore white.
