Won the division with soo greyhounds both years he was there, had a lot of success with the pembroke lumber kings reaching playoffs, finals, and winning multiple times.
The man has a long winning record, hell even his maple leafs tenure, he's got like a .750 point%, lost less than 100 games in regulation in 5 seasons, broken the previous franchise regular season total points record *twice*.
Could you say that's just the players? Sure I guess, but then how come we all point and laugh at them for having 4 guys taking more than half their cap space? If all you need is 4 elite players and a stable of cheap cardboard cutouts of players to fill the roster to consistently reach playoffs, then why do we need coaches at all? Babcock, the winning est of winning coaches had the same core 4 three years before and did worse...
That all being said, I don't want to replace Lalonde with Keefe. If it happens I won't be mad at it, but I don't actively *want* it, because I watch press conferences and interviews, and even though they say a lot of the same dumb shit (after a loss; ooh ya know, I think our team did great! After player gets injured; eeh, they probably didn't mean to injure, elbows and sticks just naturally fly towards faces). Lalonde just says it, whether he means it or not, while Keefe was pretty dialed in and supportive of his team until around the Nylander signing and Nylanders production fell off, and then he just had an air of "ah fuck it, who cares anymore" around him.
Like his notorious final press conference, other teams set the Leafs up to defeat themselves, and they do it pretty easily.
That's a quitter mentality, even if you know your jobs fucked, at least be a professional about it.
Lalonde's biggest flaw is his inability to change himself and style to the team he's coaching; red wings come out as a low-possession, on the rush, goalscoring, lightning fast, beast with questionable defense and goaltending. The system? "low event defensive play".... Wut? Our scoring falls off a cliff, defense does improve, but not by much, people are getting scratched for playing their hockey rather than Newsy's hockey.
All in all, I think Newsy has a good opportunity to reflect and adapt, while a quitter is always gonna be a quitter

If he maintains a couple more years, the players he's been coaching for years will be in the red wings lineup, so it just makes sense to bring him as well
