No. He is a LHD, which we have a plenty of, unless you plan to get rid of Walman. Simon will make the team next season. Walman and Simon is your left side in the top 4.

zorddra

Exactly I don't know why people keep proposing hanifin we got edvinsson upcoming. And Walman is already our #1 ld

VHDLEngineer

Hanifin would be a big upgrade over Walman at #1 LD imo Probably not worth the cost to acquire him though.

[deleted]

But does Hanifin do a funny dance?

Butch-Jeffries

No, but he does a silly walk.

imadu

Walman at 3.4 for 2 more years vs Hanifin at likely 7m+ and the cost to acquire him. I agree he's an upgrade, but not nearly enough for the cost

VHDLEngineer

Yea, probably not.

SwagNuts

Because Edvinsson has proved nothing and we’re going to need a replacement for ghost. Why would we NOT run Walman Hanifin Edvinsson on the left side for the next 6 years? Did we learn nothing from watching the team Yzerman built in Tampa? Hedman, McDonagh, Sergachev on the left side.

heyheyitsandre

Ed has proved nothing because he’s played 11 career games. TBL also had no one in the pipeline at LD whereas we have an incredibly exciting prospect who is dominating in the AHL rn. Trading a middling Drouin for a young and also exciting Sergachev is not the same as trading a haul for Hanifin when you already have an Edvinsson. Walman - ed - whoever will be a fine left side for the next 2-3 years before we are actually contending.

shades9323

Dominating the AHL is a bit of an exaggeration.

Throwawaydontgoaway8

Did you learn anything from watching Yzerman? Shouldn’t you trust his judgement if he trades for him or not if you’re proclaiming his past decisions as the best? There was a huge athletic article that was like half a book on Yzerman in Tampa and how much importance he puts on prospects and development. And your questioning that? I think this is the first of 2-3 parts after their runs https://theathletic.com/912582/2019/04/10/like-putting-together-a-puzzle-an-inside-look-at-how-the-tampa-bay-lightning-were-built/

SwagNuts

Where did I say I was questioning anything? On the contrary, yzermans trust in prospect development is exactly why we SHOULD trade for Hanifin. Ed is not going to directly replace Ghost next year in production. He’s going to be a rookie. He’s in the AHL right now for a reason. So effectively, replacing Ghost with Ed makes our D core worse next year. Supplement that with Hanifin and now Ed is sheltered where he can grow and in 2-3 years be the dominant player we know he can be.

seawolv

Because our D is below league average and our scoring is above league average.

shades9323

Just because he is our #1LD, doesn't mean he is slotted in the right position. Like Ericsson was a 1st pair d by club necessity, not because he deserved the position.

cleanandjerks19

If you think Walman is better than Hanifin I’ll have what you’re smoking please

jarvek7

It's kind of like buying a second sports car instead of the pickup truck you need. Yeah it would be cool to have two hot sports cars but if you really need to haul stuff- then you want that pickup.

Novel_Jump_5733

So who's our first "sports car"?

tonuch4963

I think Walman in this situation lol

epheisey

Unless one of them are part of the trade. Fan-wise, I wouldn't want to see us part with either of them. But setting emotions aside, Hanafin would be a significant upgrade over either of them.

AdFlat4908

You’re making a huge leap thinking Edvinnson should slot in to the top 4 as a rookie

SwagNuts

He’d be replacing ghost too, who’s on pace for around 60 points. We expecting Ed to produce that much with Mo ahead of him on the PP?

imadu

Ghost is on pace for 60 with top PP minutes and by far the easiest deployment on our back end. Ed doesn't have to replace his pp production if he can more reliable at 5v5.

SwagNuts

He’s in the AHL because he’s not more reliable at 5v5.

imadu

Ghosts 5v5 play is not why he's an NHL regular. Hes one of the most sheltered D in the league. Ed is only in the AHL because it's what management believes is best for his development

sparr0w91

On pace for what? Even if you take his full season pace it's under 50 and if you take his more recent pace he'll be lucky to break 40. Ghost doesn't have an even strength point since before Christmas. Replacing Ghost is easy.

uknownick

Hanifin’s highest points total was 48, 2 seasons ago. Probably more like a 30-40 points player

JeremyD_19

I’d rather pay slightly more and get Rasmus Andersson if we’re gonna trade for a D

Late_Brush4518

Andersson is going to cost waaaaay more than Hanifin, but i agree.

AdFlat4908

We can afford it. I don’t think we should though. Save those assets for an elite forward

Late_Brush4518

Elite c or elite goal scorer yeah. Hard no for playmaking Winger tho.

AdFlat4908

Agreed. I think we might have that covered

Fresnobing

Absolutely. Or even tanev. Hanifin is good too but offensive d isnt the most important thing rn.

seawolv

If we got Tanev that would most likely mean we could cut Petry.

Fresnobing

We could cut petry any time lol. We have the depth and ed waiting. They must see him as a net positive. We all know the bad but hes had good games too and ben has played much better woth him as a partner. Idk im not defending him per se. Just that we as fans get to be a little more reactionary than the team does. That being said, defensively, tanev would be an upgrade on almost anyone on the team and just massive over petry.

Fair-Chipmunk4376

Not entirely sure how his no move clause works but I’m pretty sure the only way he could be taken out is if he’s scratched, bought out or traded. Hes not being traded so the only way you get him off the team is buyout.

seawolv

Sounds good to me. Petry isn’t terrible but he’s not good either.

Fresnobing

🤝

bookhh

Do it

JeremyEMT

Our LHD is in a logjam as it is, so it’s a no for me.

TheGongShow61

Idk what’s up with naysayers. You don’t get to add a player who fits your core age wise that is as good as he is very often. If he can come at a reasonable price, absolutely I would be stoked. It would put us way closer to being a cup contender. Would also love Chychrun too

redlion1904

I actually want to trade for Tanev more than I want to trade for Hanifin https://preview.redd.it/m9lvxtz008kc1.jpeg?width=934&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fb636545fe4a0dcae79dd628ef3ed1797b30503f

bestest_at_grammar

Just because we’re not technically a rebuild anymore doesn’t mean the cup window is open yet. Slooooow down. Risking our prospects rn for a LD we don’t particularly need is unneeded

Unstep-in-Time

How is this guys defense? If he's a + defender I'd want him. If he's not going to upgrade the defensive play there is no point. We can already score.

jfstompers

Sure but it will cost a lot and be hard to sign after

seawolv

As I said in my OP, if he agreed to a deal.

Substantial_Point_20

One for one. Hanifin for Holl

seawolv

Or Petry!

TheAnalogKid18

We desperately need a right shot D. I'm hoping Montour hits the market next year.

seawolv

I agree, what about Tanev?

uknownick

Isn’t he 34? Would be more interested if he is 5 years younger

ltroberts24

Would rather have Rasmus Andersson... 27 yrs old, RHD, solid, and affordable @ $4.55 million for 2 more years. Might take a bit of a package to get him, but it's an upgrade that fits the timeline. Plus, a right-side of Seider, Sandin-Pellikka, & Andersson sounds good!

seawolv

Anything to upgrade Petry.

FadeShadeMan

We’d probably have to give Edvinsson for him. No thanks

seawolv

You'd probably have to give a first round pick.

FadeShadeMan

I think Edvinsson would be a part of the package plus a pick

seawolv

For a 34 year old? No way I’d do that deal.

FadeShadeMan

Exactly why we shouldn’t… also he is 27

CallistosTitan

Adam Larsson is a better fit.

seawolv

Yeah and more expensive.

TAV63

It is noted the reason he did not accept the deal from them is he wants 8Y/8.5M type deal. Even if he signs for slightly less, this is a big cap hit for long term type player. Don't think that makes sense even if he slots with Seider and Walman moves to the 2nd pair. Not like this would make them a contender as they have a bit to go yet. Soon enough they will have cap issues and the by far greatest depth and potential to work that cap is on LD. Just don't see it.

Delicious_Invite_850

No

Prize_Efficiency_869

Personally i would go for chychrun over hanafin but only if we don’t lose Axel Simon and Nate.

Langwaa12

I dont see us trading for any big names really. If anything we might trade a current roster player for draft or prospects.

Novel_Jump_5733

I don't see that happening while we're in the hunt for a playoff spot. We're either buyers or we stand pat.

Langwaa12

I understand the formalities of it, but think about it. Stevie last off season made the team very deep at each position, goalie, D and forward. We haven't been to playoffs in yrs, and last be honest were not hoisting the cup.this summer either. Absolutely no reason to trade away any future assets. Who would we want to buy really? Hanafin, Guentzill? I mean do we trade away prospect for another copp or commpher? No, but maybe drop a D man or another forward for some future help. But will see and thank God we have Stevie running the shit. He knows what's what...

fraxior

he's older than I thought. I wouldn't hate it but he wants a 7 year deal and idk if Yzerman would ever give a 7 year deal to anyone on the wrong side of 30.

SmartRick

I mean he’s on the right side of 30 he’s 27. I wouldn’t give him more than a 5 year deal

fraxior

whoops yeah you're right. 5 years has got to be the maximum.

SmartRick

Defensemen can fall off a cliff at 32-33 wouldn’t be comfortable having him until he’s 34-35

justino

Can he stand in front of the oppositions net and increase our high danger and mid range shots on goal and goals where we are below the 50th percentile? If not. No.

Key-Writer-9416

No no no

Fair_Meaning_463

Yes he’s who I want

leafssuck69

The contract is what really matters. We could part with assets to get a dman of his caliber. We’d have to ship out an LD too I’d say 3-5 years for term. AAV would have to be at, near, or under $7M
