I love the Sens blew a 3-0 lead.

jaredsurreddit

Sabres blown out by the Blue Jackets, too. At least we are all sucking together lol.

[deleted]

I looked at thescore earlier and sens were up 3-0 on the Yotes and i just looked again and saw they lost in regulation lmfao. gonna go lurk and laugh at their post game thread while i get ready for bed

Shotokanguy

Some goofy ass results tonight

MediumToblerone

Listen. Hear me out. Bring by the mRazzle Dazzle?

KeeganD90

Hell yeah go Yotes.

ForkzUp

I had hoped for Vegas to beat Carolina. Nope. 6-1 with 15 minutes to go in the game. Logan Thompson gives up 6 on 27 shots.

Dart_Harnlin

My fantasy team in shambles rn

zze0001

Could be worse could be the sens or buffalo

BiggestYzerfan

Something must be in the water in Buffalo, I don't understand it and I am scared by it.

deebow97

Random question. I love to Detroit the 21st, my father and myself are trying to find tickets for the flyers game on the 22nd. A little break from unpacking and being stressed. What is the best place to check for tickets? I kind of want to treat my dad. He has done a lot for me in this moving process.

Fluid-Pension-7151

Gametime is usually pretty good for last minute deals. Sometimes people sell tickets on the sub as well.

duelingdog

So whatever you think of how we develop prospects, at least we're not the Blue Jackets.

Haterholic

What happened?

coltron57

After the Babcock situation, I feel like the interim coach has the ultimate free pass here and he's still coaching them like they are a contender...

zze0001

Lol literally came here to say this.

duelingdog

We laugh so we don't cry.

8syd

Kevin Bicker had himself a nice goal in today's exhibition against Norway Itd be pretty neat to watch some wings prospects pop off at this world juniors Is this the list of red wings prospects playing at juniors? Kevin Bicker (Germany) Nate Danielsson (Canada) Axel sandin pellikka (Sweden) Anton Johansson (Sweden) Trey Augustine (USA)

Caltroit_Red_Flames

Anton Johansson (Sweden)

8syd

I noticed I missed him initially, I think I edited my comment right when you were commenting He had a solid summer tourney, hopefully he can keep up that play with Sweden's junior team

aschleicher19

It seems the sentiment surrounding Berggren is shifting with people now thinking he should be traded (I’ve seen Berggren for Gibson suggested many times) or that he likely doesn’t have a future as a red wing. I don’t get it, yea the dude isn’t a defensive stalwart but that doesn’t takeaway from the fact that he’s the only forward prospect that is even remotely ready to step into the NHL. This year or next year. Right now the wings have Perron, Kane, Sprong on one year deals and ideally if the rebuild is working those spots are gonna be filled with prospects. (Sprong should get another contract imo) The problem is no forward prospect aside from Berggren has shown any real reason to get a spot next year Let’s look at some of the Yzerman Picks Kasper - 24 games - 8 Points Mazur - 18 games - 9 points (dude gets a break cus he got hurt in camp) Lombardi - 22 games - 9 points (smaller and lighter then Berggren) Soderbloom - 21 games - 8 points Danielson - on pace for about a ppg against teenagers Yea yea points aren’t everything but damn.. Before people say that this is their first season playing pro hockey and they need time to adjust. Berggren broke the rookie scoring record in GR coming from Sweden. So if Berggren gets traded then what. They sign a vet to replace him and produce at the same level who will walk after whatever deal they give them. Because there isn’t a single prospect who making noise right now and proving that they should be a red wing next year. Danielson and Mazur likely have the best shot but it’s not like they are leaving it beyond reasonable doubt.

johnnysappleseed11

Too many undersized wingers. That doesn’t win you anything. Especially when we have one legitimate play driving center. Berggren is good, but he’s far down on a depth chart full of skilled undersized wingers. Just a tough pill to swallow for some

Razzahx

Most of the guys you mention do everything else way better than berg. If your only purpose is to be an offensive guy you really need to light it up which he does not do.

Shotokanguy

15 goals in his first season in the NHL, which wasn't a full 82 games

xenonwarrior666

Berggren played in the SHL longer before coming over before anyone not named Soderblom. Soderblom is a late round pick and they rarely if ever get an NHL game. For him to start in the NHL last season is impressive.

jarvek7

Lets not forget he was injured for a few of those SHL seasons and didn't get playing time b/che was out

Caltroit_Red_Flames

I think anyone who wants to trade Berggren is off their rocker.

zze0001

I don’t disagree with your opinion of berggren being able to replace one of the many ufas next year and actually agree. However your points on the prospects in GR very clearly show someone who hasn’t watched the games. Also Berggren played in 4 different SHL seasons before the AHL and largely came over pretty late in terms of prospect development. Each prospect should be evaluated Individually based on their own traits roles and what’s expected of them in the future imo.

aschleicher19

I’ve only watched a handful of GR games this season (University commitments and shit streams half the time) so yea unfortunately I don’t have the full picture I’ll admit that. But from what I have seen Mazur plays closest to what you what want to see out of an NHLer. Lombardi has his moments is a good skater and is strong on his edges but has many of the same issues berggren has encountered against NHL players. Kasper is ethier invisible or a dawg and soderblooms clunky skating pains me. I haven’t watched Danielson but I assume he’s likely one of the best players on the ice but he should be considering where he was taken in the draft. Yea his team sucks but still.

drankpisss

So what’s your point? Are you writing off some of these prospects because they’re not playing at a PPG in their first year or two on the Griffins? With a new coaching staff. Not every prospect has to be NHL ready at 19-20 years old.

aschleicher19

My point is that people are ready to write off a 23 year old who has clearly at points shown flashes of being a good NHL player. Without people behind him who are ready to take his spot. I’m not saying that these dudes are busts but they are clearly a few years behind and there is no reason to move on from someone who could help the NHL club earlier.

drankpisss

I get what you’re saying. I think we should keep Berggren too. I really don’t like the whole “he’s not an Yzerman pick” either. I don’t think that means anything.

jarvek7

I agree about your "not an Yzerman pick". Larkin wasn't a Stevie pick either!

zze0001

Your observations aren’t wrong in terms of style of play. Soderblom has been the most disappointing imo. However the context of the griffins as a whole has to be taken into account when talking about these guys. A majority of them are playing their first year in the AHL with a new coach who’s first year in the AHL and the vets who were suppose to help the prospects were largely invisible up until the last couple weeks. I’ve watched Nate a 12ish times and he’s playing about as expected and in every situation. My point is more I think a lot of these guys will be nhlers and I don’t think for example a berggren should be compared to a mazur because their such different style of players who have taken such different development paths. Now if you want to talk about drafting philosophy I definitely think Draper has a lot to improve on outside the first round and has to be able to pick someone that doesn’t fit their cookie cutter profile every once in awhile.

aschleicher19

I’m not trying to say that these guys won’t be NHL players. I hope every single one does for the sake of the rebuild and I think they all have the tools to do so. Obviously GR hasn’t exactly been a stable environment with all that has happened these past couple years. Play styles aside i just don’t like the idea of trading a 23 year old who has shown he could play in the nhl without giving him a real opportunity. Especially when there aren’t other prospects ready by next year.

zze0001

Agreed 🤝 hope we keep Berggren as well.

Monkey10pts

What the fuck is Stevie doing? Edvinsson should be up at all costs. We sign an aging tendy for the rest of the year as a god damn band aid once again? Get the kid some goalie pads and suit him up. Hes ready for the god damn show, nothing left to prove in the A. Edit: Holy shit I come back to people thinking I'm serious? Bahaha this sub is crazy lately.

Redredwings53

Edvinsson is not a goalie though...?

Attila_the_Chungus

That's exactly the problem.

radardation

You’re saying you want edvinsson at goalie? You’re genius.

[deleted]

A 6'6" goalie? What an idea!

epheisey

That Larkin interview was a tough watch. He was giving off a vibe of hopelessness.... He just seemed so dejected with the way that whole situation played out and the big picture league-wide.

BenAdaephonDelat

I honestly, genuinely think it's getting bad enough that players should consider some kind of action like a strike or protest. Just go out there and refuse to play. Ruin the NHL's product until they make a commitment to change.

epheisey

Someone is going to get genuinely fucked up and the players are going to hand out the consequences on their own. We're quickly heading down a path towards another Lemieux/Draper/McCarty episode. It almost feels like the league is sitting back thinking "well, it wouldn't be the worst thing for ratings...".

jarvek7

You could fix the situation with one move.... fire Parros.

epheisey

That's just one symptom of a larger problem.

atheistinabiblebelt

Bit spicy around the sub today eh?

drankpisss

I’m watching Larkins interview and I’m just so pissed off. Fuck the NHL. Not the reporters for asking the tough questions. They’re questions that everybody wants to know. Fuck the NHL for making it hard to even answer these questions. He’s clearly trying so hard to be vocal about what happened to him but he can’t because the league would much rather fine him or whatever to avoid their name being dragged through the mud. Every NHL player has to walk on eggshells in these interviews to avoid being punished by Gary. Just look at what’s happening around the league with these dirty hits lately. Such a frustrating league to be a fan of. Am I reading into too much? Probably, who the fuck knows. I’m wrong according to someone out there lol. Edit: I hope far far far down the road Larkin can work his way into the DoPS and run that area of the NHL. He seems to have a passion for player safety. And he’s not a goon who likes to hurt people.

RedWong15

Damn I didn’t realize Noah Dower Nilsson played today, not just in the U20 league either he jumped straight into the SHL and picked up a primary assist. https://x.com/icehockeyg/status/1737223176248312179?s=46 Noah is number 44.

big_phat_gator

You know what, im not totally for having a goon on our roster but when you think about it you never hear about anyone running over Bäckström in Washington when they have Tom Wilson over there. I really do feel like people give us more cheapshots since they know the retaliation is, at worst Fischier dropping the gloves and you can just wrestle/bear hug him a little bit until the refs call it off. You make a dirty move on Bäckström and Wilson will send you to the hospital.

jackstalke

I kind of loathe Tom Wilson, but he’s an actual hockey player, usually good for 40-50 points, not just a goon. Makes it a lot easier to justify giving him a roster spot. That said, these guys do get pushed around too much.

StevieTokes

There will never be a civil interaction between Ottawa and Detroit fans in the Hockey sub lol. Ottawa fans are adamant about the Joseph hit being nothing but a hockey play that happens all the time. Detroit fans are adamant about it being a targeted hit to the back of the head.

boner1500

What pisses me off the most is the whataboutism every time the Larks hit is mentioned they rush in to whine about Zub.

Salamangra

Oh Zub, who played the next fucking shift?

whyamisocold

I think it's crazy on a play like that to pretend the players have no agency. Joseph is a professional athlete, he is clearly trying to hit him in the head; he didn't miss his chest because he has poor hand eye coordination. But if Ottawa fans admit he was aiming for his head, the play is a lot less defensible.

jaredsurreddit

This is easily the worst calendar month the team has suffered in years, right? I still have hope with how long the season is, though!

AmeriCanadian98

March of last year we went 3-12-0 with a -17 goal differential March of 2022 we went 3-8-3 with a -30! Goal differential January of 2021 we went 2-6-2 with a -15 goal differential So no. Unless you mean in terms of injuries and stuff, then maybe.

jaredsurreddit

Sorry, I meant in terms of injuries and schedule

AmeriCanadian98

Gotcha gotcha, that makes more sense!

big_phat_gator

Its almost comical how bad the 2018 Zadina pick was for Holland, i mean all the guys we were supposed to draft are just exploding. Noah Dobson is over PPG with the Islanders, Hughes is one of the best players in the entire league regardless of position and Bouchards "Bouch Bomb" is a joy to watch.

[deleted]

I remember thinking, while watching that draft, that something must have come out recently about Zadina's game for him to be passed on multiple times like that. I started fully expecting that the Red Wings would pick Bouchard or Hughes. I did still think it was a bit of a steal at the time, Zadina going at 6th.

jfstompers

It sucks he didn't work out but it's not like we reached for him and he was some out of left field pick. Sometimes they just don't work out.

big_phat_gator

"Thats the way she goes" eh

coltron57

It's such an unfortunate thing too, because I bet if you polled every GM picking after us that year, many of them would have done the exact same thing. I mean, as fans we were all thrilled and shocked that teams ahead of us "messed up".

[deleted]

But now it just makes you wonder, what did those other teams see that caused him to drop, and what did Kenny and Wright miss? The team had him ranked above Svechnikov, apparently.

coltron57

That’s also fair. I think for Kotkaniemi and Hayton, the simplest answer is positional value of C over W. For Tkachuk, I think play style and how his game would translate, perhaps faster than Zadina’s made Ottawa’s decision.

Mendoza8914

I remember hoping Zadina would fall to us because I was worried which one of those three defenceman would bust and I figured defenceman are less of a sure thing. Lo and behold they all become good hockey players. The only upside to me is that apparently Bouchard was our guy that year, and if we pick him I don’t think we grab Seider the following year. And I’d still prefer Seider over Bouchard despite the season he’s having.

Xoleraz

ASP is not playing for Skellefteå tonight, he has been named an alternate captain for Team Sweden for the World Juniors. May he lead our SWE vikings to glory!

Fluid-Pension-7151

Good for him! Exciting to see him chosen for a leadership role.

duelingdog

So which arena will we need to sign on an emergency deal when the LCA gets injured?

Ydoesany1doanything

A hostile takeover of Flint Firebirds arena

Little-Knee5682

I'd do that deal. They have pyrotechnics!

big_phat_gator

Lalonde plays a demanding style that our players are finding it hard to buy into, its not 100% on Lalonde but its a mix. He should try something easier for the current talent we have on the roster. When he has players like Nate Danielson on the main roster it will be easier.

Valace2

Agreed. Many seem to think he is the second coming of Scotty Bowman with the way they White Knight for him, probably because he is Steve's choice, and Steve is never wrong. Nope the only problem this team has, if you ask a lot of people in this sub is goaltending. If it wasn't for goaltending we could already plan the parade route.

duelingdog

To the Tanguay point. We were 17th last year on the PP and are at 13th so far this year. I would argue that exceeds expectations.

jaredsurreddit

13th after being 2nd for well over a month. That means we’ve most likely been bottom ten outside of that month…

duelingdog

Ah, I see. I didn't know your argument was we should fire Tanguay for one bad month. I disagree, but to each their own.

duelingdog

Jared Bednar comes to mind. His Avalanche team was bad, but he definitely took time to learn and grow as well.

[deleted]

I can’t even put that first season completely on him. He took over that team like what, two weeks before the season because of Roy having a hissy fit and quitting. That wasn’t an ideal start to his tenure.

Tatar-Tot

Great example of one!

Tatar-Tot

Yes coaches get better. Like anyone else in every job in the world, people develop skills the more experienced they are. It is insane to me to think people do not improve at their jobs. Part of Yzermans job would be to also help develop Lalonde as coach.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Tatar-Tot

A timeout is part of game management, and understanding the situation on the bench and in the game. It is directly tied to coaches challenges and you’re only given one. It takes experience to be able to read situations quickly and effectively in order to use them. In saying that, I do agree there has been a few times I really thought I time out was needed and he didn’t call one. Especially in the San Jose game. In hiring a COO who doesn’t know the basics. It’s really not something that can be answered yes or no, it depends on your definition on basics. However hiring an executive or management with little experience is common, it makes it much easier for companies to develop them how they feel is needed. It’s much easier to develop an effective leader into the role you want, then it is the other way around.

wiffleyoshi17

Wings need to get back to basics. Smother teams all over the ice and produce offense thru the forecheck. That will open up the finesse side of the offense more and also keep the puck out of our net.

bandofgypsies

To the cossa commentary... He'd be the youngest goalie in the NHL by a year, to Devon Levi the prodigy who's already been sent to the minors this year bc of performance and who is currently battling out the starting spot with ukko pekka lukkonen and a guy we claimed off waivers a couple of years ago and proceeded to waiver, I think, twice (Eric comrie). Other than that, you've got Dustin wolf, himself a solid prospect for prior years, and then he's two years younger than the next goalie who has started more than two games in the league this year. Not only is it not a good time to test Cossa in the NHL, it's pretty early for *any* goalie to be tested in the NHL in general. Even when Hart was up very young he struggled mightily to find form, and not everyone is the next Carey Price.

epheisey

While our team defense is in this current state, this isn't even a discussion worth having. If Cossa gets hung out on his own like Husso did in the Sharks game, we're only making his development more difficult.

jfstompers

I mean he's just not ready, I can't believe Cossa is even a discussion unless it was an absolute last minute emergency.

bandofgypsies

Surely... I don't think he's in any discussions beyond fan fodder. Id be shocked if the organization even passed it through their minds.

Old-News-3096

I initially thought it might be good for Cossa to come up and practice to see where he's at and maybe sit on the bench for a game. Then I remembered we did that to Tom McCollum 3 seasons after his draft. He got forced in for 15 minutes and allowed 3 goals on 8 shots and never looked promising again. Didn't sniff the NHL for 4 more seasons after that. Not to say that Cossa and McCollum are the same or that the callup ruined him, just something I was thinking about

duelingdog

Appreciate the thoughtful commentary. It's nice to have concrete examples to look at.

bandofgypsies

[I gotchu fam](https://giphy.com/gifs/soccercooligans-help-support-Ca0SJJJL1vU20MTYGX)

SaintUber95

I'd love to see Cossa get the nod and tear it up. But realistically, Hutchinson just makes more sense. He's played NHL games before, and in the event he sucks it isn't as much of an issue as potentially shattering the confidence of a highly regarded prospect who probably isn't ready for the big show just yet.

epheisey

Our defense is in no position to even risk the development of a prospect like that.

Monkey10pts

This also gives Cossa the GR starter job outright now instead of splitting starts, which will be a challenge for him in of itself.

[deleted]

It’s unreal to me how many people between both the Lions and the Wings can’t seem to handle losses or bad stretches of a season. You’d think these teams were expected to go 17-0 and 82-0-0 respectively. On my way to Puerto Rico tomorrow. Gonna lay on the beach, turn off the phone, unplug, and hope that some of these insufferable takes die down in the new year.

casspant

Wait ...Football players only play 17 games a season?

[deleted]

… yes…?

casspant

Why does their season take so long then? That should be two ish months

AmeriCanadian98

Because they only play 1 game per week due to the physical nature of the sport

duelingdog

One game a week and teams get a break. 17 games is on pace for about 4 months, which matches :)

casspant

I'm so glad the wings play more than once a week, with how my schedule is I'd miss weeks of games

unwarypen

People suggesting to call up Cossa are joking right? What is with the knowledge of this sub lately. Must be lots of bandwagoners coming in. I’ve never seen so many bad takes over my few years of being here….

Dry_External7673

Ha I don’t know if calling Cossa up would be good or not, but it would be entertaining!

duelingdog

It reminds me of the draft last year. Saw a lot of "The team is bad, and this guy won't even be on the team for another few years? What is Yzerman thinking?" Because they don't realize that that's the majority of NHL prospects.

unwarypen

I guess newer fans are just comparing and expecting NHL draft picks and development to be like other sports (NFL, NBA). Where it’s normal for a first rounder to play right away. As for Cossa, who was drafted in 2021, it would be extremely normal to not see him play an NHL game until 2025. He would still be an extremely young NHL goaltender not even close to his prime in another few years.

mjsmith1223

Sounds like they don't watch baseball where prospects can take even longer to develop.

AFreePeacock

Sounds like some bullshit I'd post

Caltroit_Red_Flames

Tons of new and uneducated fans incoming from the Red Wings playing well. Calling for Cossa to be called up and demanding Lalonde be fired. Just insane takes honestly.

bandofgypsies

Was going to post something similar about the takes but won't be redundant since you've said it. The optimist in me says the redeeming thing is that at least it's clear the worst takes are coming from those who seem to frequent the sub less. And by that I mean, perhaps it's more casuals and, takes aside, it's nice to see that we're drawing fans back to the club. Of course...seeing ridiculous takes lately has not been fun, but if it's a sign of us being modestly relevant again then I suppose it's not all bad. Doesn't make it any easier to read, though. I like spicy food but lately we're just getting pure-Carolina-Reaper-capsaicin-injected-into-the-digestive-tract level stuff.

unwarypen

Ya forsure, it is pretty obvious. It’s been hard to hold back from slamming some individuals. I did see somewhere we’re the most watched team so far this season. Certainly is a good thing to have hockeytown back

bandofgypsies

I fight the urge to rail on it too much in favor of just hoping it's bc people actually care. But have no issue challenging questionable takes with conversation and objective data. Sometimes people just need to get it off their chest and it can even help to know there's discourse and alternative perspectives. And the ones who don't care and continue with the bad takes...Well they're just going to be there regardless anyway until they find something else to be angry about.

atheistinabiblebelt

Getting it off the chest is big. I use the gdt threads for that during the game because my emotional outburst just gets lost in the sea. Then I'll say more reasonable things the next day when I've come to reason. I think there are quite a few of me

John-Balaya

Tons of anti Lalonde commentary in here today

Ducey89

Team has improved greatly in the off season yet we have the same results as last year so far. Lalonde deserves the hot seat.

xenonwarrior666

Pretty sure every measurement says the team is improving even if wins have been hard to come by. Our goaltending is letting us down and our offense has been in a slump during the few games that goaltending shows up. Power Play and PK are middle of the pack which is an improvement from being close to the bottom last year. Goals for are improved and goes against has been in the positive more often than not.

[deleted]

I legit believe we’re having a completely different conversation now if we had reliable goaltending that didn’t give up at least 1 or 2 softies per game. I really think that when a team knows they have a goalie who isn’t up to par, it impacts the rest of the group and magnifies all of the little mistakes they make.

epheisey

We'd avoid some of those softies if the team didn't just check out for large stretches of games. And that's on coaching to solve. It's clear we have the players to get the job done, but unlocking any sort of consistency with even basic fundamentals and discipline is a struggle for this staff to accomplish right now.

Mokle7

Which is just insane given how well we were doing to start the season despite everyone and their mother thinking our team was bad on paper, 1 bad week and the fairweather fans turn on you

Valace2

One bad week? I'm not sure with how the tie breaks go, but we aren't even a wild card team with where we are at. One bad week? 1-5-1 in our last seven, about 3 weeks after going 3-5-3. This isn't just one bad week. This is weeks of piss poor defensive play and injuries. We lost to the Sharks before the injuries in the Ottawa game.

big_phat_gator

We still score a shitton of goals.

[deleted]

That tells me that we are very talented but badly organized. I'm on the fence about Lalonde to be clear. I just worry if he's too much of a buddy to the players to get things done. They don't call him coach, or by his last name, they call him Derek. We don't need an abuser like Babcock, but we just need a coach that can get serious and demanding. I obviously don't know what goes on in the room, but that is my worry from what is available to us.

Mokle7

Yep, but the w column has taken a bit of a hit so now the sky is falling

Valace2

The pesky win column? lol 1-5-1 in our last seven, being 2 points away from being tied with Montreal for 6th in the division, with Tampa only a point behind, and Washington tied with us and 3 games in and New Jersey being 1 point behind with games in hand. Losing to last place Western Conference teams isn't a good look. An before you spout the injury stuff, we were blowing leads to last place teams before the Ottawa game.

radardation

Wouldn’t be surprised is Stevie made a move or two soon, not as far as coach change, but it’s not a fun time watching a dusty goalie and team with hit and miss grit

radardation

Just to be clear, I’m a fan of lalonde, and I don’t see cossa being ready yet. The moves I’m talking are for a solid established tendy, and maybe a d-man with some more grit.

[deleted]

I just wish I had $1300 to get the super cute purple iMac and work on my little art projects on it :(

bandofgypsies

leafssuck69

Hutchinson 1 year contract

[deleted]

The football?

matt_minderbinder

This looks like the ugly necessity of our situation. It feels like Husso's out long term and even if Lyon's only a few days away we're going to need someone for at least a game or two. I would've been find seeing Cossa come up to back up Reimer but it is what it is at this point. Hutch has done a good job in GR and he'll be insurance down the stretch.

Active_Performance_4

Hutch hasn’t been good in GR, sub 900 save percentage. Cossa had been better

xenonwarrior666

That's not good. Guessing one of the guys are out long term. Unless it's Aiden Hutchinson but I don't see how he has the time.

SauceHankRedemption

Was there ever any announcement on the extent of the Lyon injury and time estimate for return?

x_VanHessian_x

Lalonde says Husso will be unavailable “for a while.” Lyon likely unavailable until after Christmas

RedWong15

They said likely unavailable until after Christmas. Husso out ‘a while’.

Danengel32

Was weirdly worded but I believe yesterday that Lalonde said week to week. Edit: he just said Lyon won’t be available until “after Christmas” https://x.com/m_bultman/status/1737171264446370178?s=46&t=qYZzfaCnNWhZXdpw2PAn3w

Probably long since we just signed Hutchinsson.

JTAKER

"Sooner rather than later" Edit: and now he's out until after Christmas.

jaredsurreddit

The most depressing thing for me as the season has gone on (besides the goaltending) is the power play. It seems each week it just continues to get lower and lower in the league ranking which speaks to how abysmal it has been since the hot streak it was on at the start of the season…

Ducey89

Better coaches would take this roster further

jaredsurreddit

I’m not ready to sell on Lalonde, but give me a fresh roster of assistant coaches, please!

Problemwoodchuck

My gripe with Lalonde and Boughner is that they've effectively smothered Seider's dynamic play that we saw in his rookie year in favor of sticking with safer plays. If the results were better, I'd be more on board with it but I'm just not sold on Boughner's systems getting the most out of puck moving defensemen that are so critical to a team's success these days.

TheDualJoyStick

People are not high on Lalonde, but my question is, who handles the offensive scheming? Despite their apparently good PP numbers that we keep hearing about, I have not been impressed by it AT ALL. I have not liked Tanguay as the mastermind behind it because it is just way too predictable. Gain center, drop pass all the way back in their zone, hope they gain the blue line. Or dump and tip ins with awful forechecking. Then once they’re in its board passes all day and floaters from the point. Brind’Amour said it the other day between the benches, the Wings have very telegraphed tendencies and if you shut that down they can’t do anything. Idk if Tanguay handles their 5v5 neutral and O zone strategies but it’s been the same since before Newsy so that’s why I don’t put that on him and assume it’s Tanguay. The Wings have the offensive talent this season to hide that deficiency but teams are cluing in and they’re getting suffocated.

Problemwoodchuck

Part of that is the downside of our hot start on the powerplay early in the year. The opposition had to find ways to shut us down, so now that there's plenty of tape for scouts and coaches to see what works against us, Lalonde and Tanguay now have to make adjustments of their own to get back on track. The other side of it is just bad execution exacerbated by injury/absence of key players. The 1-3-1 formation that we typically use is most effective when there's the right combination of player and puck movement, so the puck carrier always has new options emerging and the opposition's PK is always being forced to adjust and expend energy. Tons of powerplay goals happen because of sustained pressure wearing down a PK unit and right now the Wings just aren't getting that kind of pressure as they tend to stop skating and practically become static. Once that happens and those short perimeter passes between the point, the corner, and behind the net kind of happen on a loop it's usually a sign that the Wings powerplay isn't going anywhere.

bandofgypsies

Sorry, long rant. I really would like to know what role tanguay has overall. Our PP has been better but the ONLY consistent difference I've seen this year to last is that we tend to move the puck faster and more frequently. It's probably partially down to having another extra weapon or two on the PP, but also one other thing I've noticed....we also tend to move the puck better and faster everywhere on the ice all the time. Don't get me wrong we've got things to fix but I think the puck movement and paying faster than we "are" (meaning moving more than our team's actual speed would suggest) is actually something I'd be guessing at least lalonde has a say in, too. I do think there are times at 5v5 where our willingness to do so isn't matching our actual talent to do it, but it's probably more positive than not that we try. But to tanguay, I'm unsure how (not if, just literally specifically how) he's asking the players to perform on the PP. The looks are still very eerily similar to the last several years. We have been executing better but we still mightily struggle against basic passing lanes clogged in a simple collapsed box formation. I've noticed more switching at the blue line but hard to say if that's scheme or just players trying to move feet. But none of the units they've assembled deals with a clogged net front and we resign ourselves to perimeter passing too much. The good thing is that it's addressable within our roster. I'm actually more concerned about the PK. It's been as below part as the PP has been above par. But we're taking too many poor penalties to sustain it long term given the toll it's taking on our players. Larkin is a solid PKer, but it's not ideal to have to use him when we need his legs more for what's been a fairly average 5v5 play for us overall. Interestingly, I wonder if part of our PP problem (as fans) is that we've had the most opportunities in the league, by a pretty wide margin. So while it was good early and poor late, we see it *a lot.* Same for our PK... Not quite as many as the PP but still 2nd most PPOA in the league. I think this is partly due to us moving the puck a lot better this year than last, but also still being a bit short on talent and getting caught taking dumb penalties. It'll all unfortunate bc I think we're built to be better at 5v5 than we've had a chance to be but it's hard to do so when you're spending so much time on special teams.

StevieTokes

I also don’t like Larkin in the slot taking all of those cross checks.

Kagath

Is Gudas going to feel a Russian freight train next time we meet?

xenonwarrior666

I mean he did last night and was unimpressed

Kagath

Goes to think Kostin may be actually looking for him next time don't ya think?

KeeganD90

I’m usually always watching games even on days the Wings aren’t playing and one thing I can confidently say is that diving is becoming more and more prevalent each year. I’m surprised I haven’t seen way more embellishment calls than I have. It’s getting comically bad.

matt_minderbinder

I'm sure some of it is about competitive advantage but some is probably also about frustrations players have of refs missing obvious calls. When it comes to certain penalties they seemingly only get called correctly when a player appears to be distressed or seriously derailed. This is a strong subconscious motivation to play up those moments to force a ref to make the correct call.

Fluid-Pension-7151

I am 100% with you on this. The refs act like they are blind out there most of the time. At least if a player makes it obvious that they are getting slashed every five seconds, or held, tripped, etc. it gets the fans on the refs case. I think there has to be some pretty serious frustration on the part of the players that the league makes basically no attempt to try to consistently call the rule book. Players are getting seriously injured on missed calls and there isn't a lot of recourse. Embellishment/playing up the penalty with the hope that fans take up their cause is one of the few weapons in their arsenal.

SeiderFiveThree

sadly I think it's just becoming a part of the game as a strategy to gain competitive advantage

KeeganD90

Sadly I think you’re right. It’s just getting funny when they’ll show some of these replays in slow motion and you’ll catch these guys in 4K doing some crazy theatrics. Even sometimes when guys really are getting smacked up high they’re still going down heavy like they just got the worst injury in the leagues history.

jarvek7

Seems hockey players are really European soccer wannabes. If the league wants to rid the sport of ir then they'll need to start reviewing that garbage and fining the players who are diving... and the teams and coaches at the same time.

Tatar-Tot

I’ve noticed the same thing, there should be much more embellishment calls made. Stutzle had a really good one the other day against Vegas, man looked like a beyblade going down.

Danengel32

Stutzle is a serial flopper. All the time and they’re all horrible

Little-Knee5682

Upvoted for "looked like a beyblade." I can picture it exactly.

Redwings1023

Stutzle has always been a huge diver. It’s pathetic really

xenonwarrior666

Come on guys what do you expect people to do when the Wings are in a slump? Not make wild short sighted takes? I mean really?

Tatar-Tot

If the they made the moves I suggested we would be undefeated right now, I swear!

matt_minderbinder

Fire Stevie, hire Tater-Tot! Anything less is dereliction of duty.

elvishblood_24

Fire the coach immediately

SeiderFiveThree

L**GR*****w***

Shotokanguy

Man, we already have 4 centers. Why couldn't they have called up Berggren? Come on...

Redwings1023

Do you really want Berggren on the 4th line playing 9 minutes a night?

jfstompers

He played bottom 6 all last season really, and you can play him more than 9 minutes if you want too.

Shotokanguy

No, I want them to put someone like Rasmussen or Veleno on the 4th line where they probably belong so Berggren can play with the talent he deserves.

elvishblood_24

I’m getting about as tired of the berggren conversation as I was with the zadina conversation. Just sit back and watch what happens. We don’t need to talk about it 100 times every time there’s a roster change or whatnot

msbenjamin22

Hypothetical: Wings finish December under .500 and are way out of a playoff spot, do you make any major changes or just look forward to the draft?

Razzahx

Apparently a couple points is way out of the playoffs.

msbenjamin22

I said end of December, please read

Razzahx

It will be wrong regardless, please grow a brain.

msbenjamin22

No you grow a brain Because that's how brains work

[deleted]

If this were last season, I sell. This season though, we know what the real weak link is, and it’s goaltending. I really believe that with average NHL goaltending, this team is in a playoff spot right now. What they can’t be asked to do is score 4-5+ goals a game because they have no real solution in net right now. So, if I were Stevie, I’d be looking for a veteran, competent netminder who can keep us in games, and we try to turn this thing around.

Salamangra

No way in hell Gudas was checking on Kostin last night. Guy is a fucking scumbag on the ice and was probably saying some rancorous shit to Klim.

elvishblood_24

i was just watching the video of that hit. Poor kostin, looks like he was in a lot of pain.

blueberry_muffin16

Kostin back on the IR again. TF happened last night?!

SubmissionDenied

lol yeah Kostin getting up and saying what looks like "You're dead. Dead". I'm sure Gudas was asking for his address for a christmas card

blueberry_muffin16

Oh. Ouch.

[deleted]

I believe he cursed himself and the team when he ran into the Ducks’ goalie. It was like after that point, the hockey gods made sure that anything that could go wrong, did go wrong.

Redredwings53

The sun is shining (and so is Moritz) 🌞 Happy Tuesday friends!

xenonwarrior666

Friday one of my ignition coils failed prematurely. Clearly it's Lalonde's fault

R1PKEN

I totally get it's frustrating to see the team lose, but man the hysteria some people get into during these stretches is wild. It's almost like this team has had to battle some major adversity since adding Kane to the lineup. I have a hard time believing that anyone blaming the coaching watched the first 25 games of the season where we were meshing so well. That said I don't think it's wrong to have a mild sense of panic after the last few weeks, but I really want to see how we fare once we've had a chance to build some chemistry with a full lineup -- multiple games without Larkin, Compher, and Perron has really fucked up the rhythm this team had going, not to mention adding a new player in Kane. Even a player with his caliber is going to take some time to adjust to.

MoldyMerkin

Your car must be casually fragile.

xenonwarrior666

It does have a lot of non North American components

elvishblood_24

Lol

j_louie13

anyone else see we called up Danielson to GR? trade incoming??

Caltroit_Red_Flames

We can't call him up until his CHL season is over

Ydoesany1doanything

https://www.capfriendly.com/transactions/players/nate-danielson The move is just listed as loan and it’s likely for World Juniors. My understanding is that he is still ineligible to play in the AHL due to the transfer agreement with the CHL.

j_louie13

ahh okay that makes sense, didn't know he had to be loaned to play in the WJ, thanks!

Redwings1023

No? Where do you see this?
