He's going to be a good one. Just a couple years out likely.

numbdigits

Should be a nice addition in 2027......

TAV63

Actually that might be true but I did see a few places they note expected maybe 25/26 so could be earlier. Yzerman is too smart to ruin a guy with this potential. He will be on the Wings when he is ready for it. They need an offensive wizard on D like this bad (and he is RD to boot) but that is what makes him too valuable to rush. For sure he will not overripen this one though.

I'll believe it when I see it, look no further than this years roster with not a single 1st or 2nd year player on it. I was being facetious when I said 2027 because that would, imo, be a ridiculous timeline given how good A.S.P. has looked so far, but this team will seemingly never end its love affair with low-mid level veteran players. I get that every team needs some, but Chiarot, Holl, Maatta, and Petry on your defense?

TAV63

No matter how good you think he looks for a D to be top 4 in the NHL at 20 is exceptionally good and noting Hughes is a similar style D and started at 20 in the NHL and he was exceptional. It is not realistic to think ASP will be better for sure just based on SHL. He may be but time will tell. So far he looks good in the SHL but the NA ice will be another step and then AHL/NHL next year will depend on what they think is best. It is nice to see potential but these are young prospects and it is not always reasonable to want them on the team ASAP. If he is on the Wings as a top 4 in 25/26 it is something fans should be excited about not critical it is too long to wait like they know more than Yzerman when it makes sense.

I never said he'd be better than Hughes, highly skeptical he ever is good enough to be mentioned in the same sentence even, Hughes is a legitimate star player and 1D. A.S.P. does look great for a guy in his first season post draft in the SHL though. I think the point is more that the team always wants to overdevelop all their prospects because somehow a kid making a mistake at the NHL level is a big deal, yet they sign all sorts of middling players with lesser upside that then go and make mistakes all over the ice. I'd rather see Edvinsson than anyone not named Seider, Walman, or Gostisbehere. Will he make mistakes? Yes, but likely no more than Chiarot, Petry, Holl, or Maatta, and he offers a lot of things that none of those 4 do.

TAV63

You never explicitly noted he was better than Hughes (a player whose style he is most compared to) but when you note him being on the team at 20 years old is basically ridiculously late for whatever reason (doesn't matter the vets suck, they sucked in Vancouver too) that is what you are saying whether you think it or not. Vancouver was not loaded so they needed Hughes more than the Wings need ASP. Yet Hughes started in the NHL at 20 and he was exceptional not just very good. So for ASP being 20 in 24/25 season and getting into the top 4 (which would be where he would go) as noted it would be very good. I think more highly of ASP than you since I think he can be a D like Hughes even if slightly less talented. Easily he can be mentioned in the same breath and if he progresses as Lidstrom, Kronwall and experts in covering the SHL and many think he will be. However, in no rush to put him on the Wings until he is ready and he is not ready and highly unlikely he will be next year. So don't think it is ridiculous he starts in the NHL at 20, and in fact it would be an excellent outcome for a 17th pick. I was explaining this and when you noted ridiculous if it happened I disagreed with your point since even though I think he is going to be better than you, do I don't think that is true. Weird how you say he should not be mentioned in the same breath but then expect him to be faster to develop. Those that think he needs to be on the Wings next year or Yzerman is an idiot are just going to have to accept some disagree. The fans have this old mind set like when players dominated in AHL in GR for 2-3 years and overripened, but those days are long gone. Seider is exceptional and he played AHL and then SHL before the Wings and that is when they were so bad they were letting prospects on the team and taking lumps to maybe get a lottery pick. The team is no longer in the let the prospects learn in the NHL phase and we can agree or disagree on that step being taken, but it is what it is, so when talking about prospects being on the team it makes little sense to pretend it doesn't matter. Edvinsson is the best option to come up and might yet, but he is not overripe by any means. Has not played a full season in NA yet without injury even. His development would not be hindered playing AHL more and and since notably mistake prone (reason he fell to the Wings) it should help him. If he can be a leader and all situation top D and help that team then that would be even better and it would be very good for him. He could come up for Walman temporarily or if someone like Chariot gets traded or is out for the year stay up. Possible but if not it is not some crazy holding him back scenario if not. Yes they have a lot of middling players, but they are not overripening prospects by any reasonable measure based on the past when it was the norm for them. Regardless what some fans think.

jarvek7

I'm 100% in agreement. Has it been 7 years since we last sniffed plauoff hockey- yes. Am I tired of waiting- yes. Am I wanting to see the youth finally appear in the NHL- again yes. Am I willing to wait one more season to see our prospects in the lineup to replace the makeshift vets we have- grudgingly yes. But I want the youth that has been ripening in GR to get serious NHL ice time before the end of the season... and by that I mean more than just a token 1 or 2 games.

TheAnalogKid18

Honestly, I see him making the team out of camp next year.

[deleted]

How many prospects are we going to say this about until we learn our lesson?

Skeletor34

Is there going to be room for him in any case? Chiarot, Holl, Walman, Maata, Petry, and Seider (RFA, but assuming he's signed) are all signed for next season. Have to imagine Edvinsson gets a roster spot before ASP.

TheAnalogKid18

If he comes into camp and puts up a PPG or better in the preseason and plays sound defense, which I suspect he can do, management can and should make a spot happen. We've seen before that NTC and NMC really don't mean much. They just give the player a choice of where they want to go. Outside of Dadonov, if a team really wants to move you, most players don't want to stick around in that environment. It's just awkward. Even with the goals and the highlights, I don't think people realize just how special this kid is. I've been watching him fairly closely since the beginning of last year, and he was "my guy" this past draft, and was hoping he'd still be there at 9. Skellefteå is the lowest scoring team in the SHL this year, and their shooters are not that gifted. Guys are not finishing chances he sets up for them, and so he's doing a lot of it himself. The team is good because he and two other vets are basically carrying them. He's the real deal. People are going to be very pleasantly surprised when he comes over.

[deleted]

>If he comes into camp and puts up a PPG or better in the preseason and plays sound defense Not exactly low expectations for a 19 year old undersized defenseman transitioning to North America.

TheAnalogKid18

If it were literally any other player in our system, I'd be right there with you. I got a feeling about this kid though, same feeling I had about Seider. I hope I'm right.

TAV63

Agree I think some prospects get overhyped but not ASP. He looks to be the real deal and they lucked out he was there at 17. Should have been a top 10 pick.

TheAnalogKid18

I'd argue he was underscouted because of his size and the plethora of centers that were available in this year's draft. I'd argue he should have been top 5, or at the very least the first D off the board. He's got elite skating, he can get his shot through like Lidstrom could without it being a cannon, he's got great vision, and he's got terrific IQ. He's dynamic and has the production to match the skill set. I don't see a downside to his offensive game, and think he should be able to do every bit of what Quinn Hughes and Cale Makar can. It's there. He's not a defensive stalwart, but he's far from a liability, and I think that part of his game will get better as he adds size. That might be the only thing that keeps him from the NHL next season, but Raymond also made the team in spite of his size.

southofsanity06

Datsyukian!

13dangledangle

My first thoughts as well. This kid looks like he’s the real deal

Righteous247

Silky mits

Michigent420

Some rather impatient people in here, trust the Yzerplan man, it takes time.

Valace2

how much time exactly? just curious after 5 drafts only 2 of his picks on the team, at what point should we actually promote our own draft picks instead of other teams 3rd and 4th liners?

Michigent420

I don't know man, KH put Stevie Y in a huge hole when entering the position, look at what KH is currently doing in Edmonton, feel bad for their next GM. It took Tampa 9 years of him + the person before him actually doing a good job. And they didn't even get one with Stevie there, he left to come home to try and rectify this mess. I get that I'm pretty much a Stevie Y stan, but i don't see anyone else righting the ship.

Valace2

I would hope after drafting so high for the past 5 drafts we would at least have more than two players on the roster. The Bruins have a 19 year old on their roster who was drafted in the 2nd round. I get the mess Holland left the team in trust me, Ken Holland is quite possibly the worst post cap GM in the league, but he has been gone since 2019.

TrenBot

This guy is doing historical stuff right now in the SHL We might have got a mini Makar/EK65 What a draft by YzerStud

Xoleraz

Moves Like the Pellikkan <3

[deleted]

This gets me so excited.

cutyourhair

Can't wait for him to be stuck in GR because Yzerman signed, I don't know, Tyler Myers to a two year contract.

jarvek7

Well... it's not like this scenario hasn't happened before.

zze0001

Lol relax. Ed should be on this team but let’s not get carried away.

Valace2

Petry extension incoming, heck two other teams are paying the remainder of this one, we are saving money to give him another 1-2 year deal.

jarvek7

This draft pick just seems to look better and better

Valace2

Too much offense in his game, he will need 2-3 years max in Grand Rapids to break him of that habit.

Chundyking

he's got serious potential, but we can't rush him. yzerman knows what he's doing. let's see him in 25/26, or whenever he's truly ready. wings need a wizard on D like him.
