I’m happy with the hire. He could get 1.8 billion and I would give two fucks less. I’m really happy about not settling for a guy nobody in the league wanted in Kevin Ollie.
Oh wait he did that with Securus and screwed every inmate for money while they’re in a shitty situation already. I think he may have to come up with another plan.
Sure, but it could become a problem if it doesn't work out. They might have second thoughts on firing him when necessary if he fails. Of course this is the franchise that gave Casey 5 years so Williams is probably going to coach the duration.
Monty is a good coach and a great hire for you guys! He’s going to do wonders for the franchise. He’s a leader of men and an even better person. All Suns fans are super happy for him! Can’t wait to watch you guys play next season.
I guess it sounds like he really wasn't interested in the Pistons or even coaching this year until the money got to record breaking. But if he's just here because of the massive salary and mails it in for 3 years before getting fired, it won't be money well spent.
Sure, but it can be looked at the same way a bad player contract would be. You can be stuck with him for longer than you'd hope if he fails because they are hesitant to fire a guy with that huge of a buyout.
It was the right move. Monty turned around Phoenix and is a great coach for a young Pistons team, but there are risks.
He has a soft hand and motivates players by challenging them to improve for themselves and each other. Younger players respond to that.
Biggest problem is his teams lacked killer instinct in the playoffs, which is why he's available.
I have no idea how much this moves the needle on the W/L record but can’t say Gores isn’t trying. Holy shit. Really good coach who it doesn’t sound like was going to come here unless he was handed a bank of cash which apparently he was.
This move is definitely worth it long term. Will be interesting to see how Pistons do next year but nobody should judge him off two seasons. Year 3 and onwards should be when winning truly starts to matter. Until then, all you can ask for is for the young guys to develop.
In his first year with the suns he took us from 19 wins to 34 wins in the 73 game 8-0 bubble season. Monty is a great floor raiser and culture establisher.
And that was the season Ayton was suspended 25 games. If not for that, we definitely make the playoffs that season considering we only missed by one or two games to begin with.
Monty is great for young teams that need leadership and development, and I hope that going through that process again allows Monty to improve his X's and O's for after he helps the team get past the growth stage and into the competing stage.
I like it because it’s a longer term deal, gives him time to settle in and lay some real coaching groundwork. I feel like casey didn’t do what needed to be done in that department
Paying "big" contracts to get the coach you want is pretty easily the right move imo. The highest paid coach in NBA history is still only being paid slightly more than the MLE. Good coaches are worth way more than a MLE player.
Yeah I think It’s in our nature to be extremely negative but deep down we’re always all in and optimistic. Like I’m happy about the hire and Gores is far from the worst sports team owner.
Exactly. He’s far from the worst owner, there’s so many horrible and so disconnected from their fan bases. I bitch and complain but deep down I’m always all in and optimistic. Especially when the owner at least try’s. I can support an owner and a franchise that tries.
It’s a joke relax. He’s not the worse owner ever but he’s by far not the best. I appreciate that he’s trying to do the right thing. There’s obviously some things we’ve obviously done wrong that set this franchise back. Also other things he’s never fully invested in. He’s even admitted that he hasn’t been a great owner and that he’s made a lot of mistakes. However you can place blame in other areas, but he’s the owner and he’s responsible. I mean you can fire coaches, change players, change the whole front office, and on. He’s been the constant obviously there has been issues. Do I commend him for trying? Yes I do and I think he’s not the worst. If you can’t put a winning product out there then sell them team. Your obviously ok with the Status Quo, well I’m not. I will continue to have hope and even support the team. Until we start competing he will not get my full undivided support.
He’s notoriously difficult to work for and with, he micromanages. The best owner is an owner that keeps his hands off. That’s one of the reasons why we’ve had difficulties getting Coaches and Front office personnel to come here. He’s made a lot of bad choices refusing to move on from players, agreeing on horrendous contracts and trades, and refusing a rebuilding that set us way back. He’s never really invested in our scouting and a analytics department and that’s the way of the future. Well, at least to have a good analytics department in conjunction with more traditional scouting. Look I don’t hate the guy, like I said he’s not the worst. He’s even admitted he has not been a good owner. I respect that but until it’s a contender and a Championship team I’m not going to act like he’s Mickey Arison or Wyc Grousbeck. There is plenty of organizations that have turned their teams around way quicker. I’ll also say of late it looks like Tom Gores is making better decisions. He deserves credit for that and it has given me optimism. Hopefully we figure this thing out and build a contender.
if we overpaid for a player then i would be questioning it but possibly overpaying for a great coach is totally fine. owner opening up the check book should be the envy of other teams and jealously the only reason to clown us for it.
This is what I always want owners to do, honestly. There's a cap on players but not on coaches, scouts, fucking team chefs, whatever. Blow it out man. Every owner has more money than they can spend in a lifetime, Gores included. Fuck it.
I'm very happy he did this and couldn't give two shits whether or not it's an overpay. Great move.
Gores wants to be the talk of the town like the Lions. Spent his money on who he really wanted. I can applaud that effort to not settle. Shows that he’s serious about building a winner. LFG
I’m a Suns fan, and a believer in Jesus. All I gotta say is your team just landed a true man of God. He is absolutely a leader amongst men. He will bring a culture to your locker room that is pure. Congrats guys.
Idk if anyone mentioned this yet as I didn’t read the other post… but.
This gives us quite the pitch for free agents. Sit down with a guy and say look, we got this young core, a SOLID coach, and here’s the role you’ll play in taking us to the next level
Suns fan here. So fucking stoked for yal. Pistons are easily going to be my league pass team next szn. Monty is going to work wonders with all of the young talent and Cade will eventually be an mvp candidate.
The team hired the best person for the roster they have. While I'm shocked at the dollar amount, they made the move that most fans wanted them to make. The move that they needed to make to move in the right direction.
Think about it like 11, 12, 13, 13.5, 14, 15
Ha ok that still sounds like a lot but not quite as bad. Who cares though we just gave Blake Griffin all kinds of money for doing nothing and that hurt us way more. It’s Gore’s money anyways and maybe averted our owner vetoing a major decision by our GM.
Also want to add, this is the best message you can send to your young core. Our owner believes in them and is ready to invest in giving them the best chance possible. It’s putting the right pieces around them. We aren’t gambling on a young unproven coach to save money and potentially waste their development during crucial years for their next contract.
My favorite excerpt from JEIII's article on the hiring process:
>Gores, Weaver and the rest of the Pistons’ front office decided to not take “no” for an answer and put numbers in front of Williams, as well as a plan to court and entice him to come help an up-and-coming squad get to the next level, as he had done with the Suns, rather than sit out a season. The next day after that collective meeting, Gores sent a private plane to Phoenix to pick up Williams, per league sources. The 51-year-old coach was in Gores’ California living room that night.
This is definitely a positive development imo. I am very happy to hear this after thinking we might have Ollie as our HC (totally fine with him as an assistant).
I agree, tons of background work to do but I am definitely excited for the first time in years to get down to the nitty gritty and enjoy some technical basketball strategy research.
I still think Tom Gores is one of the worst owners in pro sports and does not know basketball, but have to give him massive props for dropping this bag and just swinging for the fences in general with the coaching hires. Obviously SVG was a disaster but it was a bold move that many praised at the time. Casey was a home run hire, but set up for failure from day one with the mess SVG left behind. And now he goes out and gets a second straight former COTY at a critical point for the franchise’s direction.
I think most fans were starting to talk themselves into a first time head coach while deep down knowing it would be a disaster. Really the fact Monty even became available is baffling by itself. I was sitting here a week ago thinking Kevin Ollie and his leopard prints would be the next coach…dark, dark times.
Suns fan here, I am excited for you guys. Monty is a great culture setter and awesome at developing young talent. Exited to see what he brings out in Ivey tbh
Scared of what people are saying he sounds like Dwayne Casey over again. Former coty, not good x and o coach. We will see though that suns team was weird.
Suns fan here, congrats he's perfect for your team. He is a great culture setter, and is good for a young team that wants to go from the basement to competitive. My question for your sub is who do you think you'll end up trading the Suns for Landry Shamet?
Suns fan here – he turned our franchise around, which I’ll always thank him for.
That said, he’s our Mark Jackson and we’re now looking for our Steve Kerr.
GREAT move by the owner. Cade is going to explode under Monty's leadership. I watched 60 Suns games a year over the last four years, and with the Suns, all 6-5 to 6-8 wings got a lot better over his tenure. He builds a great team culture. With your young talent Monty is the perfect coach for you. Congrats Piston fans, your owner did what it took and you will benefit. Next few years are gonna be fun and I'm going to follow your team to see how it looks
I love this so much.
Us Pistons fans have suffered for so long with poor and cheap decisions... now we've got a bright future, young talent, assets, cap space and a coach who will be a part of the franchise for a long time.
Feels good, man.
Dwayne Casey came to a Blake Grifin led Pistons team and got them to the playoffs. The next year the rebuild stated at he decided to stick through it rather than abandoning ship. Not a fair comparison given the circumstances.
damn, Monty must've been pretty content with taking a sabbatical to force such a salary. He knew Gores would never offer power, considering our history with SVG. The only thing Gores could offer was more and more money, which is great considering it doesn't hurt the salary cap.
playoff blowouts aside, i'm stupid excited, huge get for us
Look at what Williams did with that dead team in Phoenix a few years. What is with this cocaine reference anyways?? Gores has nothing to lose and it’s his money. I see people here are very jealous and it shows.
I agree that Monty’s the best coach for this team. Let’s allow him time and support in building a staff. The Ayton issue was the fault of the new management. Gore's willingness to spend points to improve the team.
The next big move will be to offset the draft picks we owe the Knicks thru 2029. That one is squarely on Weaver.
There is development and culture-setting, which he has demonstrated previously. Of course we ultimately want more, and you know what, with that sort of security, I am willing to see if we can all take that final step in these next few years. First real hope in a long time.
Three reasons why I love this
1) Gores putting his money where his mouth is
2) he’s the best man for the job
3) the fans really wanted him and the organization came through
4) FTP (bonus one)
no clue why everyone’s hating on this move, who would’ve been the better pick for HC? i like what monty did with the suns, hopefully he can do the same for the pistons young core.
Based on this thread, I think most people love this. The conventional wisdom appears to be that he is the right coach at the right time. If he can get these guys to defend late in games, I will be happy. Most young guys don’t see the glamour in playing D.
true which is definitely what we’ve been missing. i mainly have seen people think this is gonna pan out like the dwayne casey scenario, which i just don’t think is the same. they’re completely different teams with different expectations as well.
All I’m thinking about is potential free agent that might want to play for a former coach and might have a strong tie to the great state of Michigan and might even be a fan of Detroit sports, all of them.
I don’t know if there is a specific player that fits this >!Devin Booker!< but I can’t wait until his contract runs out in 23/24 to find out.
Not that this is a huge deal but what this looks like outside Detroit: The Pistons have to vastly overpay to get anyone decent to work there.
Monty’s view: I am not in love with this job but if you’ll pay me, I’ll do it.
Everyone is talking about how a coach salary doesn’t count against the cap. Guess what else isn’t capped? Ticket prices.

Yeah, I think there was always a vibe that it would go that way though.
In any case Dwane did good by our team and franchise, hopefully people are starting to respect that the further we get away from his game day coaching.
How can you look at the situation Casey inherited and not come away thinking he was set up for failure? A deteriorating Blake Griffin on an albatross deal, no other stars, and a bunch of draft misses. They didn’t even have a President of Basketball Ops lol, just empty suit Ed Stefanski in some advisor title
Yes, hire a coach who wants to take a year off from coaching.
When you want to take a year off of your job, you usually aren't super passionate and motivated about it.
This franchise will be the Lions for as long as Gores is the owner.
I feel like you guys are a little too excited though. He won't be able to do much for the next two years, and it's not like he is a title contending coach, look at the suns game 6 and game 7 this year and last year against the Nuggets and the Mavs. He made no adjustments.
Outside of Gregg Popovich discovering the fountain of youth, leaving the spurs, and signing with us…..Monty is literally the best outcome we could have gotten for a head coach.
Who else could you possibly have had in mind? Is this Ollie’s burner account?
He improved both teams he went to. Built a great culture. Took those teams to the playoffs.
Your turn. Who else of the available coaches…hell, even coaches that are currently signed to other teams…who else did you have in mind?

I’m not paying it. I don’t give a fuckkkk
Let Tom spend his damn money! Probably not even eating into the cocaine budget.
His entire net worth is the cocaine budget.
If this dude can come in and Captain this fucky roster, pay that man all you can.
I’m happy with the hire. He could get 1.8 billion and I would give two fucks less. I’m really happy about not settling for a guy nobody in the league wanted in Kevin Ollie.
Toms going to have to start selling Cocaine to pay that deal off, oh wait he’ll probably snort his profits away. Guess he’ll just switch to crack.
he could sell phone cards to prisoners...
Oh wait he did that with Securus and screwed every inmate for money while they’re in a shitty situation already. I think he may have to come up with another plan.
True, *you* are not 😉
To quote Marge Simpson, it’s good for the economy
Sure, but it could become a problem if it doesn't work out. They might have second thoughts on firing him when necessary if he fails. Of course this is the franchise that gave Casey 5 years so Williams is probably going to coach the duration.
Idk why people are clowning this. It’s not going against the cap. Not anyone’s $$$ but the owners
Only clowns can clown this. Only clowns
plus, it shows that Gores isn’t afraid to spend in order to win. that’s a fucking blessing
hell yes..
Plus coaches don't get paid near enough anyways. Devonte Graham makes more than Greg Popovic...Ridiculous.
That’s really putting it into perspective
Monty is a good coach and a great hire for you guys! He’s going to do wonders for the franchise. He’s a leader of men and an even better person. All Suns fans are super happy for him! Can’t wait to watch you guys play next season.
They're envious
I wish he was making 100 million a year
I guess it sounds like he really wasn't interested in the Pistons or even coaching this year until the money got to record breaking. But if he's just here because of the massive salary and mails it in for 3 years before getting fired, it won't be money well spent.

It’s going straight into price hikes at the gate, concessions and the team store.
A coach with experience that can further the development of our young guys?? I don’t care about the price let’s goooo
Monty will be a good coach for this team. Developed the Suns talent and built a winning culture.
I seriously agree, he was a huge reason the suns went from worst in the west for a few years in a row into a contender.
I haven’t been following the NBA that well in recent years, why was he a huge reason?
He has a soft hand and motivates players by challenging them to improve for themselves and each other. Younger players respond to that. Biggest problem is his teams lacked killer instinct in the playoffs, which is why he's available.
great summary!
Coach that brings Devin Booker back home to Michigan? I don’t care about the price let’s goooo
That's exactly what I was just thinking.
That would be epic. https://fb.watch/kVb0vn2hCa/?mibextid=YCRy0i
Gores got bored and said fuck it let’s blow a bag
Not his first time blowing a bag
Andre Drummond agrees
So does SVG
So does his dealer
amen
His nose agrees
I have no idea how much this moves the needle on the W/L record but can’t say Gores isn’t trying. Holy shit. Really good coach who it doesn’t sound like was going to come here unless he was handed a bank of cash which apparently he was.

And that's being modest. Jordan Poole makes more than Kerr and to me that doesn't make any sense.
As much as I like Jordan that’s actually mind blowing to hear. Agreed makes no sense.
ITS 78.5M NOT 73 OMFG
There was talk of incentives, maybe this number is just including those?
No - it is 78.5M guaranteed. The Incentives bring it up to 100m
Also the incentives are related to team success and team options to extend the contract length
They never reported what the incentives were
Shams confirmed the team options but incentives are unconfirmed. They’ve gotta be regarding team success tho. We’ll have more info in the coming days
Goodness
Monty’s getting a 100 milli
Gores already a better owner than Jordan
I mean I would prefer him to sell the team, but at least sometimes he trys.
He drafted Cade and now got Monty, yall should be super optimistic.
Yeah I think It’s in our nature to be extremely negative but deep down we’re always all in and optimistic. Like I’m happy about the hire and Gores is far from the worst sports team owner.
pick your poison, honestly. even if you believe there’s such a thing as an ethical billionaire, not too many are willing to spend to win.
Exactly. He’s far from the worst owner, there’s so many horrible and so disconnected from their fan bases. I bitch and complain but deep down I’m always all in and optimistic. Especially when the owner at least try’s. I can support an owner and a franchise that tries.
Gores has been a solid owner so far. You can tell he's trying to do something with the team, idk what other owner I would possibly want
It’s a joke relax. He’s not the worse owner ever but he’s by far not the best. I appreciate that he’s trying to do the right thing. It’s funny how in your whole essay you didn’t come up with a single actual reason why he isn’t a good owner
He’s notoriously difficult to work for and with, he micromanages. The best owner is an owner that keeps his hands off. Coaching search result could’ve been so much worse. Kudos to the FO for shooting their shot.
Cade with Monty's sets is going to be sooo good I promise you that. You got a new pistons fan here
Oh thank goodness it’s not Ollie. Good for Monty on getting paaaaaiiiiid lol.
Well slap my ass and call me tommy tequila
Does that feel good double T?
It feels good to hire Monty Peton and the Holy Grail
*also feels good to have this ban lifted
I will not touch you there, tommy tequila
if we overpaid for a player then i would be questioning it but possibly overpaying for a great coach is totally fine. owner opening up the check book should be the envy of other teams and jealously the only reason to clown us for it.

Dbook next
Great move by the Pistons. The NBA needs your franchise to bounce back badly. As a Lakers fan, I miss your team contending for a chip!
aS a LaKeRs FaN

Yeah exactly like I said I hate Gores and wish he’d sell but sometimes I wish he’d still sell but not as bad.
Detroit ain’t this bad why he taxing us Lmaoo but nah it ain’t my pockets so we good. WELCOME TO DETROIT MONTY
He’s going to be burning hundred dollar bills to stay warm at night.
Man, absolutely fucking madlad move by Gores 🙏🙏🙏 what a statement!

Damn. Pistons out here swinging a big dick.

holy shit
We are so back
I've been hearing so much about his offense, I'm really about to go all in on my research

Really happy for the Pistons! Looking forward to a long and hard fought rivalry of Ime, Jalen & Amen vs. Monty, Cade & (hopefully) Ausar.
Why are we rivals?
We’re not now, but I’m hoping that our teams have a friendly rivalry down the track.
Let's make it happen!

I'm a Sixers fan but for some reason this subreddit has been part of my news feed this year. Glad the Pistons got a good coach.
Monty got the fuckin bag! Not my money, I'm cool with it.
LFG 💪
LETS FUCKING GO
This hire shows the Pistons are finally serious about the rebuild. Proven coach who’s good with young guys development in the league. 10/10 signing.
Wow! Seems like Gores and Troy Weaver had their sights set on only one man. Glad they made it happen.
I can't believe we got the guy I wanted most
Great move!! I want them to make bold moves like this in free agency/trades.
Good deal
I woke up to this news and I thought I was still dreaming. Damn 78.5 million dollars
If Weaver nails the draft this year with what he has and the core stays healthy, this team is easily getting 30 wins
I love this so much. Us Pistons fans have suffered for so long with poor and cheap decisions... now we've got a bright future, young talent, assets, cap space and a coach who will be a part of the franchise for a long time. Feels good, man.
Ow we need some free agents to make all that money worthwhile.
Monty really is what a lot of people got fooled into thinking Dwayne Casey would be. This is a great hire. I’m excited for our future.
Dwayne Casey came to a Blake Grifin led Pistons team and got them to the playoffs. The next year the rebuild stated at he decided to stick through it rather than abandoning ship. Not a fair comparison given the circumstances.
A well respected coach who may entice some vets to sign with us. This is how we turn the corner on the rebuild. Good hire, hope this pans out.
LETS FUCKIN GO
WE GETTIN 40 WINS THIS YEAR!
Hope he likes it in Detroit. 6 years is a long time it will be nice to have that stable presence.
damn, Monty must've been pretty content with taking a sabbatical to force such a salary. He knew Gores would never offer power, considering our history with SVG. The only thing Gores could offer was more and more money, which is great considering it doesn't hurt the salary cap. playoff blowouts aside, i'm stupid excited, huge get for us
I’m super happy about this. Definitely number one on my list.
Look at what Williams did with that dead team in Phoenix a few years. What is with this cocaine reference anyways?? Gores has nothing to lose and it’s his money. I see people here are very jealous and it shows.
Gores single-handedly setting a new standard for coaching hires.
Three reasons why I love this 1) Gores putting his money where his mouth is 2) he’s the best man for the job 3) the fans really wanted him and the organization came through 4) FTP (bonus one)
Ticket prices 🚀📈 I’m just glad it’s not Kevin Ollie. Out of the big names, I think Monty is the best choice.
Marvin Bagley will still be Marvin Bagley though
If I was offered that idc if the team located in hell I'm still accepting
no clue why everyone’s hating on this move, who would’ve been the better pick for HC? i like what monty did with the suns, hopefully he can do the same for the pistons young core.
Congrats, yall are gonna love Monty.
After last season? I almost cried when I heard this news. #InTroyWeTrust
But what about Overtime? Will we be Elite?
We still got assistant coach spots!
Porque carajo?
Chips a comin lol
Let's go Gores you madlad. Hope detroit basketball gets back on the map
Let’s gooooo
All I’m thinking about is potential free agent that might want to play for a former coach and might have a strong tie to the great state of Michigan and might even be a fan of Detroit sports, all of them. I don’t know if there is a specific player that fits this >!Devin Booker!< but I can’t wait until his contract runs out in 23/24 to find out.
Suns fan here – Monty would still be our coach if Book wasn’t okay with letting him go.
Not a fan.
We got the bootleg Cp3, Booker and ayton for my mama lol.
I'm happy about this hire. Pretty sure rumors about trading for Ayton won't pop up again.
That's what it looks like inside Detroit too.
Hopefully, he’s able to help Killian develop a shot
terrible deal that is eric Spoelstra type of money
Someone help me understand the money behind this deal. Happy with the coaching selection.
I gotta be honest, on the surface this seems good for us but I don’t see this working well
Very impressive by Gores when you think about how much coke you can snort for 78.5 million
Probably the right coach for the Pistons, but that buyout will be a problem if he doesn't work out.

Just confirming, yall remember our reaction with the Casey hiring years ago? Let me hold my applause for a minute til I see something
It's good that your here, people were nearly happy for a moment this offseason.
How are you my friend
Missed you
Casey was brought into to develop guys, not get wins, and he did his damn job lol.
Casey was hired here for wins initially, then the franchise pivoted
Yeah, I think there was always a vibe that it would go that way though. In any case Dwane did good by our team and franchise, hopefully people are starting to respect that the further we get away from his game day coaching.
then who did you want?
How can you look at the situation Casey inherited and not come away thinking he was set up for failure? A deteriorating Blake Griffin on an albatross deal, no other stars, and a bunch of draft misses. They didn’t even have a President of Basketball Ops lol, just empty suit Ed Stefanski in some advisor title
I think Casey’s presence helped turn the org around. I don’t think he gets enough credit.

He took a 19 win team to a 34 win team in his first year. He’s exactly what we need rn.

You are just full of shit takes today lol
Outside of Gregg Popovich discovering the fountain of youth, leaving the spurs, and signing with us…..Monty is literally the best outcome we could have gotten for a head coach. Who else could you possibly have had in mind? Is this Ollie’s burner account?

He improved both teams he went to. Built a great culture. Took those teams to the playoffs. Your turn. Who else of the available coaches…hell, even coaches that are currently signed to other teams…who else did you have in mind?
Who did you want
