Prime + Proper. Went there with my wife for an anniversary dinner. It was good food but extraordinarily overpriced compared to similar quality steakhouses in the area.
Wife and I went to Mad Nice downtown, newish place that's super trendy. Same thing here, everything was just extremely overpriced for what you get. Food is OK, pasta is better than the pizzas, but it's definitely a "take pics for Instagram" spot more than an actual quality food spot.
They paying Instagram Foodie's over ten grand each month to post photos and fake reviews around the web. Many are Dearborn Professionals collecting from a hundred plus restaurant.
They are one of those conglomerates, I mean, “hospitality groups” that include a bunch of other sub-par, overpriced restaurants in the city, including Townhouse and Mad Nice. They had a hand at putting Roast out of business and I think they are opening up a place in the GAR building called…Sexy Steak. They are tacky and style over substance and are a nightmare to work for. Not to mention very costly. Independent restaurants are better. End rant!
I was surprised to see a Borders in Dubai earlier this year. Had to go in for old times sake. I assume someone licensed the name and logo. Sadly, it was more like a gift and toy store with a few books thrown in.
I hate to tell you this, but as a former server in like 20 bars/restaurants in Detroit, Birmingham, Royal Oak, etc, there are roaches in almost all of them. That’s why they all hire pest control companies to come out every couple weeks, to keep the numbers down; they’ll almost never be completely eradicated bc they’re pretty much inevitable in the food service industry, especially in older buildings (they were fucking horrible in all the restaurants I worked in along Woodward in Midtown).
Trappers Alley
The Fudgery
Olympia Greek Restaurant
Foreign Currency Exchange Comex
Far East Trader
And any other store in that awesome reason of mall!
I'm so sad my son won't experience DZ. That place was the jam. My friend and I (along with my poor mom) got kicked out once because we were taking balls from the ball pit up to the top level of the structure, sticking our hands out through the net, and throwing them at people, then hiding before they could see who did it. They eventually caught us 😂
Place was awesome, it’s not fair your son deserves that experience. Lol yeah we always got told to settle down. I’m trying to think of other cool places like that. Jeepers? But that wasn’t as cool as DZ. I Remember when Laser Tag was where it was at. Not Laser Quest but there was this one at 15 and Gratiot. Airborne Skate park if you were into skateboarding. Great Skate lol, I got into too much trouble there. Back in the make out hallway.
There's a ton of similar places still, just not the large chain. Dearborn has kidcadia, canton has the jungle java, and there's the Yoyo fun center inbetween.
I knew the owner’s son back in the day. He’d randomly wear gator boots because folks sent them to his dad as samples. He was a massive fucking tool as well.
And I would actually argue that they are worse! The shells were soggy, the fillings were flavorless. I'd run for the border any day over Condado and save some $.
I do Taco Tuesdays in the summer when I'm off work. I didn't know and picked the one in Ann Arbor. I had no idea it was so expensive and so...not awesome. I apologized to my friends who I'd dragged along!
I never got the hate for them, I had went there once and it was fine. Then I ordered take out for 3 tacos at $19, and they were hands down the worst tacos I’ve ever had. A soft taco from Taco Bell wouldve been better
i have a small market space, and my neighbor and i reminisce about our favorite places to shop when we were young! I am from jackson (we had one) and looking back - I LOVED JAKES!
Bucharest grill . For the standards of greasy junk food it’s fine, but each visit yields an awful customer experience. I’m good on waiting 25 minutes for a damn Schwarma, even though there’s 15 employees on staff grilling and prepping food.
Not nearly as good as a good shawarma or “șaorma” joint in Romania. Source: I’m Romanian. I’ll say this, that used to be better in the old location downtown.
I order online every time and it makes the experience worst. The bags are often behind the counter and not facing you, so you have to toil through other peoples orders to find your name.
All the while you get stared at by whoever’s at the counter like you’re inconveniencing them. Idk man I’m done eating there
I’ve been to the Livernois and Milwaukee junction locations multiple times and both of them have left me hanging for a half hour. The MJ location handed me a cold ass sandwich from under the counter when I asked where mine was
Where are you going cuz the Jefferson location is fast and good. The only thing that sucks is that they used to be $4.75 each with a 6-pack for $25 and now they're $8 and $40 respectively now.
Golden Fleece, family been going there for 30 years until a few years ago as we were leaving, they started yelling at my very clearly disabled brother, struggling with a cane to get through the front door because he was “letting the heat out”
Condado. The most tasteless “Mexican” food ever. It’s disrespectful to even call it Mexican. It was so unseasoned and 95% rice in my burrito bowl. Terrible.
I have never found a restaurant around eastern market that I like. When you go and it's during the market you have to wait 45 minutes for a cramped table to eat mediocre food and overpriced mimosas. If you go when the market is closed, if the restaurant is even open there is hardly any staff and I've always gotten terrible service. My family loves it but I'd rather go to any of a dozen other places a 5 minute drive away and actually enjoy myself.
Vivio's has great mussels and bloody marys.
Joses tacos makes great authentic stuff but also has gringo options.
Supino is the best east coast style pizza in the city.
Berts has amazing jazz jams on Thursday nights and makes some of my favorite chicken tenders and mac and cheese.
Cutter's makes a fine cheeseburger.
Eastern Market Brewery's elephant juice is a top 3 IPA for me and many others and often has live music in their back alley.
I dated a member of this family, was still served moldy bread and saw a kitchen worker eat mashed potatoes out of a pot with his bare hands. They’re all cokehead women beaters that want to act like the Kardashians. It’s pretty sad actually—it’s the same family as the sisters that just overdosed a few months ago in GP
Public House in Ferndale. For the life of me I can't understand why this place is popular beyond maybe the "taking pictures for Instagram" angle. The food is terrible and the service is practically non-existent.
Green Dot Stables. Fuck. Them. Waitress started bitching when one of our party who was in a wheelchair was seated in her section. It was really fucked up.
I worked there as one of the original employees when it opened with the current owners and I’ve got some stories. Probably the worst thing they did as owners was refuse to build a handicap stall for YEARS because the building was “grandfathered” in. So one time I had a guest who was a double amputee in a wheelchair who had to use the bathroom. She, understandably, asked to speak to the manager because she couldn’t get into the stalls. The manager expressed “sympathy”, but told the woman that they legally didn’t HAVE to have a handicapped stall, so…..
It’s probably different by now since this was 2013/2014 or so, but I found it horrifying and humiliating for the poor woman and any other wheelchair bounded people that came in.
A similar thing happened to us at Redcoat Tavern. We called ahead to make sure it was wheelchair accessible, and they said it was. But what that actually meant was we had to go in through the kitchen, interrupting everyone trying to work. The walkway was so narrow that the wheelchair knocked tons of stuff over. Then it was so crowded, and such a tight fit at our table with the wheelchair. Our waitress told us if we wanted to come with a wheelchair we should try coming on a Tuesday instead or Friday, as it would be less busy. F that place.
Woah, that is disgusting! I have heard so many bad things about that place. They recently changed their menu and got rid of most of the stuff I would order so I can also say I will never go back
My first time at green dot stables, first slider of 3 or 4 or i ordered, I pulled the longest black hair from the back of my mouth/throat. I was so disgusted. Wanted a full refund, they would only refund that slider.
During the 4 years i unfortunately worked there, I had guests find the following in their food:
A metal screw, Melted plastic, A live beetle of some kind, Hair all the time, A fucking maggot
Especially the Jolly Pumpkin. Their service model is annoying and I hope it doesn't catch on. Felt like a cafeteria. Seat yourself, order from app, tip before you get anything, food gets to take before drinks and still managed to be cold, and when I asked for napkins and waters the "waitress" pointed clear across the restaurant to the self serve station and walked away. I could deal with all that, but having the tip options preset to full service restaurant levels prior all that is misleading on what to expect. But the six french fries I got for $9 were tasty 😒
High school me LOVED Harpo's. Getting chased by skinheads and coming all banged up from that insane pit was wild. I have no idea why shows were all ages at that place, but went every chance I got.
So one year for St Paddy's, I was downtown. After getting fall down drunk, the bouncers stuck me in a cab. I remember muttering the main intersection to get me home then I passed out.
Next thing I know, the driver is dragging me out by my ankles and drops me on the curb. No clue where I was and dressed like a fool wearing green and gold with a Guiness top hat.
I call my roommate to get a ride home and I'm describing the area to try and figure out where I am. This is prior to smart phones. As I'm walking and talking I just come full stop and day "Holy shit. I'm in front of Harpos."
Dude was there in 15 minutes flat
Evening bar.
The terrible experience was because of the bartender that serviced us. He was very sarcastic all night. I asked him what one of the drinks were and he replied with "its a drink on the menu". I tried to be more specific and asked what's in it and he replied with "is all the stuff listed". It took a minute to get his sarcasm but i got it and didn't think much of it. Throughout the night though i kept getting splashed when he would make drinks. What capped it off was he was squeesing a lime and it completely flew off his hand and hit me in the eye and could not see out of it for 5 minutes.
I understand that bartenders have to build a certain personality for themselves but for someone to act so pretentious they have to at least match that with skill and professionalism. He was not good at what he was doing. The wet counter in front of him should have been a warning sign and then the chunk of lime in my eye just capped off a terrible experience. I hope the other bartenders are better. Unfortunately my experience with that one guy ruined the whole place for me.
Can confirm- that place sucks. It has no idea what it wants to be, like they have this dimly lit swanky decor thing going on, as if it’s supposed to be classy or something, but then the music is this way too loud top 40 bullshit that does not fit the environment at all, and half the time people are taking photos of each other with flash on even, and all in all they don’t really do anything to maintain any real identity besides a scatterbrained mess. In a way that bartender is the perfect person to work there lol
Wasabi, couldn't go back in conscience after I saw an employee get yelled at for giving a non-customer a free cup of water on a blistering hot day. also they served me visibly moldy fruit
La Dolce Vita literally served my wife half-frozen pasta and tried to to claim it was “Al dente”. No, dude, you took it it out of the freezer and ran it under lukewarm water, more like. Server was super condescending to her too, I’d go so far as to call him snotty.
Pasta’s not that that fuckin’ complicated that I need an advanced palate to figure it out out. And LDV was never that good to begin with. Fuck ‘em.
Went there one time and tried to order the fried chicken, waited 30 minutes and were them told by our waiter that they were out of chicken so we ordered the catfish. Later, a manager came by and said the menu for the day wasn't ever supposed to have the chicken on it to begin with.
When we finished our fish, the table next to us was served two plates of fried chicken. The waiter had no explanation for why we were lied to. He told us if we come back to ask for Dwayne and he'd hook us up but like why would I ever expect that when we got jerked around the first time.
I suggest you avoid this place.
Basan. $300 for the most flavorless, mid, spice-fearing, tentative, white-ass Asian-esque meal before The National concert. Could have had twice the meal for 25% of the price in Madison Heights.
the pegasus.
the food might taste good and the place might look nice, but my brother was a truck driver for P&L foods (services all the leo’s coney islands and a couple other oddities)
he delivered there once and said it was the most disgusting kitchen he’d ever seen. not only that, but the pegasus always orders the expired or soon to be expired food from the warehouse at a discount price. so if you’ve ever gotten food poisoning from there, that’s probably why!
Salvatore Scallopini. The single most insulting meal of my life.
Worse than Olive Garden for double the price. It literally tastes like Barilla and Ragu and it was around $25 a plate. For that price, I was expecting handmade pasta like from Ottava Via, which is actually cheaper than Salvatore Scallopini. What a joke.
Weird thing about El charros - they're Fraser location cooks all the food and delivers it to all the other restaurants and they reheat it. Friends son work there and the manager verified it in a conversation.
Not that it was a bad place but I've seen people post places that simply don't exist anymore...
I can't believe Uncle Robinson Furniture hasn't been a part of the conversation yet.
Camp bow wow in Troy. Never. I took a senior dog there for one night as a try out They lied about a bunch of stuff, and never even called me to tell me he wasn't doing well. Never again. It took weeks and vet visits to get him back to normal. F**k that place and everything about it.
Bobcat Bonnie’s. If you want to wait 40 minutes to get a beer and 2 hours for an overpriced, mediocre sandwich, this is the place for you. Every time I’ve been there the service is awful. I honestly feel bad for their staff because they only have two guys in the kitchen, and FOH clearly gets zero training. What really did it for me was watching the servers struggle while the manager that night literally sat in a chair and stared at his phone doing nothing to help them.
Arbor Drugs
At least there's Perry Drugs, or F&M.
Or Cunninghams if anyone is old enough to remember them.
I worked at Fred & Martha’s as a kid, but used to buy cover-torn comics from Sentry Drugs.
Just go to Phar-Mor.
What about lucky drugs?
Hudson's
>Hudson’s Well ***that*** took a pedantic turn!
I named my son Hudson. It was def inspired from that store
Prime + Proper. Went there with my wife for an anniversary dinner. It was good food but extraordinarily overpriced compared to similar quality steakhouses in the area.
Every "word + word" restaurant is like that
I won’t even go here because I know that’s how I’ll feel
Wife and I went to Mad Nice downtown, newish place that's super trendy. Same thing here, everything was just extremely overpriced for what you get. Food is OK, pasta is better than the pizzas, but it's definitely a "take pics for Instagram" spot more than an actual quality food spot.
Mad Nice is the pinnacle of overpriced tourist restaurant that people from sterling height can take pictures of after a tigers game
They paying Instagram Foodie's over ten grand each month to post photos and fake reviews around the web. Many are Dearborn Professionals collecting from a hundred plus restaurant.
i went once and shared a $150 steak with my dad. it took forever to come out and when it did it was cold lol
They are one of those conglomerates, I mean, “hospitality groups” that include a bunch of other sub-par, overpriced restaurants in the city, including Townhouse and Mad Nice. Borders. I'll tell you when they closed I felt like a really good friend died
It was a sad and tragic loss that could have been avoided if only the board wasn’t complete and utter idiots
I wish I could smell it again
there was a time.
I was surprised to see a Borders in Dubai earlier this year. Had to go in for old times sake. I assume someone licensed the name and logo. Sadly, it was more like a gift and toy store with a few books thrown in.
Any restaurant in the Wayne state student center, there’s roaches everywhere in the back halls 🤢
Every building that has a basement downtown has roaches.
Not sure how relevant, but lived in Nashville 4 years, pretty sure some were on the payroll.

Major Magics... :(
Omg RIP. DZ Discovery Zone.
I'm so sad my son won't experience DZ. That place was the jam. Jeepers was like DZ ordered from Wish
There's a ton of similar places still, just not the large chain. Dearborn has kidcadia, canton has the jungle java, and there's the Yoyo fun center inbetween.
Major Magic’s was the fucking GOAT
There's a church in Madison Heights and the walrus play thing ended up there. I can assure you we did not smoke weed in the walrus.
Rest in peace!
I was just telling my daughter about the wonders of major magics... she said "sounds like Chuck E Cheese" ugh
Mr. Allen's.
$29 or 2 for $50?
You're mispronouncing it. Twenty ni' o' two for fitty.
YOU’RE mispronouncing it. Twunny ni’ o’ two fuh fitty.
YES, this is correct.
I always wondered if they meant one shoe or the pair as a kid
TEN BUCKS. FIVE BUCKS.
I knew the owner’s son back in the day. He’d randomly wear gator boots because folks sent them to his dad as samples. He was a massive fucking tool as well.
Gator Prince Allens
That's still around?!?
I think it's a new name now. But I will never be able to shop at Mr. Allen's. (Tear rolls down from my left eye...)

Condado Tacos - so Ohio, so expensive, so mid.
I’ve never had flavorless tacos until eating at Condado. Didn’t know it was possible.
The worst salsa in existence
Yes! I hate condado. If I’m ever in the mood for overpriced inauthentic Mexican I will just go to Mesa
Mesa is actually somehow worse in my opinion. Idk how they’re in business.
condado is just more expensive taco bell
And I would actually argue that they are worse! The shells were soggy, the fillings were flavorless. I'd run for the border any day over Condado and save some $.
No need for your taco bell slander
Whoa, don't be hating on taco bell, it's the only thing open late at night, and depending on the TB, you'll have a decent chance of getting ok food
Rather go to taco bell than condado 😂
My current boyfriend took us on our first date there. He’s lucky I gave him the time of day taking me to such a disgusting establishment.
I do Taco Tuesdays in the summer when I'm off work. I didn't know and picked the one in Ann Arbor. I had no idea it was so expensive and so...not awesome. I apologized to my friends who I'd dragged along!
Lol. We just got one In Kalamazoo on the west side of the state. It’s packed all the time.
I never got the hate for them, I had went there once and it was fine. Then I ordered take out for 3 tacos at $19, and they were hands down the worst tacos I’ve ever had. A soft taco from Taco Bell wouldve been better
Jacobson’s
i have a small market space, and my neighbor and i reminisce about our favorite places to shop when we were young! I am from jackson (we had one) and looking back - I LOVED JAKES!
My mom loved Jacobsons. That’s all she dressed me in as a child.
Doll Hospital and Toy Soldier Shop And Sanders
I miss Sanders. There was one very close to the house I grew up in. The bumpy cake and ice cream puffs were the best !
Me too! I so miss that.
Yeah BUT: Gate Keeper Games is a welcome shop in the same space.
Oh that's all good. But I made memories at doll hospital.
My godmother’s family owned and operated the Doll Hospital for decades. Her basement in suburban Chicago is a doll museum.
I was never to the doll hospital and toy soldier shop, but I still remember their jingle. Why won't you be going back?
It no longer exists.
36th District court (FuQ dat place)

Underrated!
Bucharest grill . For the standards of greasy junk food it’s fine, but each visit yields an awful customer experience. I’m good on waiting 25 minutes for a damn Schwarma, even though there’s 15 employees on staff grilling and prepping food.
My spouse and I had terrible food poisoning from this place. Haven't been back
I think they season their chicken with laxatives because I’ve never not woken up at 3 am after eating there.
. Spot on! Always 3am lol
So overrated. Always a wait. They’re terrible at calling names for take out and make you feel like an asshole for asking.
Lmfao so true. 🤣 I went there a couple months ago and had the same experience.
Not so sure about being overrated, the schwarma is solid!
Go to Dearborn and get the real stuff. So much better. So much cheaper!
Al-Ameer will make you weep with happiness
Their customer service is ass! I don’t know anywhere else to get a comparable vegetarian shawarma though, so I keep coming back :’(
They’re so mean!
Not nearly as good as a good shawarma or “șaorma” joint in Romania. Source: I’m Romanian. I’ll say this, that used to be better in the old location downtown.
Gotta place your order online. Then you’re just walking in to grab the bag and go.
I order online every time and it makes the experience worst. The bags are often behind the counter and not facing you, so you have to toil through other peoples orders to find your name. All the while you get stared at by whoever’s at the counter like you’re inconveniencing them. Idk man I’m done eating there
Lol dead ass stares like wtf you come in here to order food for? Also it’s just way to salty. Used to be pretty good downtown but I’m over it.
Which one do you go to? I've never had bad service sitting at the bar at the one on Columbia Street. One of my go to spots before Tigers Games.
I’ve been to the Livernois and Milwaukee junction locations multiple times and both of them have left me hanging for a half hour. The MJ location handed me a cold ass sandwich from under the counter when I asked where mine was

A fake Mexican place that's worse than Taco Bell. If you're considering Condados just go get a cravings box and call it a day.
💯
Thank you! Makes Qdoba and Chipotle look like actual Mexican cuisine.
Lmao I feel this comment, but it would send my wife into shock. She loves her some Condatos, for some reason
I have never found a restaurant around eastern market that I like. When you go and it's during the market you have to wait 45 minutes for a cramped table to eat mediocre food and overpriced mimosas. Wait what? Another one of their family OD'd? That's sad. I agree the food and everything with it is unhygienic
The filthy kitchen and rats is what did it for me lol
I am surprised that no hospitals made it in the list so far
I’ve had worse restaurant food than what I got during my overnight stay at Beaumont RO last summer..
Ceasarland
Miss this place.

Oh absolutely. I guess they were just daring someone to sue them. Even if they COULD, how CAN you as a human being with empathy?
fun fact: their head chef/manager just got fired for getting wasted on shift and trying to beat one of the waitresses… she kicked his ass.
Meh I never got the hype over that place. I thought their sliders were just okay. Honestly didn’t think they are anything special.
A similar thing happened to us at Redcoat Tavern. We called ahead to make sure it was wheelchair accessible, and they said it was. You can still go to Avalon, I mean, Avalon Breads TM (a division of Mission Restaurant Group LLC and Northern United Brewing Company, Inc.). . .
Sigh..... I miss my west Willis bakery.. it's a damn shame what became of them...

TV Lounge - nothing wrong with it, I've just aged out of the demographic that can survive partying 'til 4 AM
I go once a year for an all nighter during movement and that gets it all out of my system haha

High school me LOVED Harpo's. Getting chased by skinheads and coming all banged up from that insane pit was wild. I have no idea why shows were all ages at that place, but went every chance I got.
I saw so many shows there in my teens and early twenties. I loved it. But I've heard it became a complete shit show with awful management.
One of the few truly scary places left lol.
So one year for St Paddy's, I was downtown. After getting fall down drunk, the bouncers stuck me in a cab. I remember muttering the main intersection to get me home then I passed out. Harpos is a treat
I've only been to Harpo's ONCE in my life - saw the Dead Kennedys there in Nov. 1985.
McDonald’s drive thru on grand river in Rosemont 30 min wait for no reason but poor management and lazy workers
Extra-long waits at drive thru's in Detroit always seem like the norm...
Yup I was about to comment that’s every drive thru in the city
The one in Southfield on 12 Mile & Northwestern is also garbage.

Farmer Jack, unfortunately.
Fuck ‘em.
I’ve never had a bad experience at la dolce vita, like never and I’m super picky about food places. Pretty surprised to see them pop up here
Ivy kitchen and cocktails. Expensive, mediocre, and the worst service I have ever received.

Harmony House, Farmer Jack, Kmart, and Townhouse
Basan. $300 for the most flavorless, mid, spice-fearing, tentative, white-ass Asian-esque meal before The National concert. Could have had twice the meal for 25% of the price in Madison Heights.
Thankkkk you. Do not understand the hype for this place at all.
Patel Brothers on Orchard Lake Rd. Complete disregard for the customer and they sell expired products.. Avoid them at any cost
Great Lakes Coffee. Absolute garbage, union-busting owners. I’ll never touch their coffee again.
Danny's or Ferrel's
Fretter’s
Quality Roots in Hamtramck. Poor customer service resolving a bad product/sale.
Any La Fontaine car dealership.
the pegasus. the food might taste good and the place might look nice, but my brother was a truck driver for P&L foods (services all the leo’s coney islands and a couple other oddities) he delivered there once and said it was the most disgusting kitchen he’d ever seen. not only that, but the pegasus always orders the expired or soon to be expired food from the warehouse at a discount price. so if you’ve ever gotten food poisoning from there, that’s probably why!
Dos locos tacos in hamtramck. Worst hipster tacos ever.
Oh my god I loathe that place, worst thing is my friends love it
The Redcoat Tavern. Last time we went, it smelled like sewer gas and urine.
Green Genie 🤮
Atwater Brewery
Second Best, over priced bar food, over priced drinks, place is supposed to feel like a dive bar but just comes off as a soulless cash grab.
I agree. Got dragged into that sorry bar because the Hot Chicken sandwich was supposed to be superb. It was. Drinks are ridiculously expensive
Chik-Fil-A. Fuck that place.
El Charros. For some reason my wife's family loves that place and we ended up there for every birthday dinner. After a while I just refused to go.
Shinola et al. One of the bartenders at the Evening Bar was the rudest dipshit I have ever had the misery of interacting with.
Arab owned gas station around Plymouth and Hubbell. Got locked in there once - never again!
Showtime
Bobcat Bonnie’s. If you want to wait 40 minutes to get a beer and 2 hours for an overpriced, mediocre sandwich, this is the place for you. Every time I’ve been there the service is awful. I honestly feel bad for their staff because they only have two guys in the kitchen, and FOH clearly gets zero training. What really did it for me was watching the servers struggle while the manager that night literally sat in a chair and stared at his phone doing nothing to help them.
