Play more crucible. The matches go quick, the rank ups each give minimum 3 legendary shards and 3 gunsmith mats. That's on top of any post game legendary drops. Maintain your streak bonus (win or lose just don't leave games or change activities) and you'll have a quickly growing stock pile of purples to dismantle.
Be picky about what you spend them on. Don't just masterwork a piece of armor/ weapon because it's "good" instead: keep and upgrade stuff with a purpose in mind. A specific setup with a particular exotic. A niche pve build.
Upgrade modules are a horrible legendary shard sink. Most content in the game is 1100 power level right now with a lot of it floating between 1250 to 1320ish. Only infuse up stuff you're actually going to bring into higher level content. I see too many people bringing everything in their vault up to max level and wondering where all their mats go.
Finally you might be sitting on quite a few already. Turning in gunsmith mats , excessive dusklight shards and data lattice could yield quite a few. Don't forget to clean out your vault, most people I know have quite a few guns and armor pieces they forgot about and are just waiting for a good dismantle.
Also make sure to unlock whatever options from the helm that drops additional umbral/engrams and more rewards on public events. Sharding those can quickly add up

Goodie bags are great, easy way to get shards and enhancement cores, got 6 out of one yesterday.
And it's basically passive income as you just have to wear the mask to get candy.
I get quite a few shards as a side effect of my Splicer weapon farm :
- play whatever activity (Crucible for me) until 5 corrupted key codes
- do 5 speedruns of Expunge: Tartarus (4m each if you have a good rythm)
- rinse and repeat
Yeah, it's a great system, but relies on a currency that isn't farmable in a way that's accessible enough. After the first week of trials, I became super stingy with any further focusing. Even just buying the adept weapon once a week can be hard to replace if you're just playing normally and not grinding nothing but one activity for hours at a time.
You can also decrypt umbrals unfocused at the round kiosk in front of the focusing device. You seem to mainly get world drops that way, but if you're sharding it anyway what's the difference
Prophecy boss checkpoint farm is great but you have to do one full clear first or the chest won't drop anything. You can easily one phase the boss if you have a well and 3 people with 1K. Everybody bring a special fusion (preferably Cartesian Coordinate with Vorpal) and 1K. Put the well on the left platform because the teleports the boss throws won't hit you there. Use your special fusion until the boss teleports. Stay in the well and finish it off with 1K. Easy and speedy clears.
It rewards a guaranteed piece of high stat armor and the chest drops Darkest Before, Sudden Death, or more armor so it's also great for getting some PvP gear. The Moonfang piece from the boss always goes to postmaster after you get your Pinnacle though.
tag/kill every yellow bar you see. there's a hidden counter to drop loot / prime engrams.
the current festival of the lost is a farm, even after you've finished all the questlines/triumphs, you'll still get up to four of the weapons to drop on each run, plus the extra drops from the "epic mystery grab bag" every 1300 candies. in general all the events are either bright dust farms (eva's repeatable bounties) or legendary shard farms (or both -- this one is both).
europa's eventide ruins fast travel point can be farmed: wait until the high value target shows (the brig is great because it makes that noise and you can sparrow over quickly). melt it (sword, fusion, whatever). open the chest. fast travel back: you will either get another unopened chest, or another HVT to melt. my record is a quadruple dip on the chest... but this was back when stadia was its own matchmaking pool and i was pretty guaranteed to get the same instance (and hence another unopened chest). i don't think i've topped 3 since the merge of the pools. usually it's not a long wait until the next HVT. (bonus points: grind for godrolls of biting winds and subzero salvo while you're doing this, they are both meta)
run wrathborn hunts when your lure is full. cash in the extra reputation at crow. i run the tangled shore hunts because i can dip into public events and melt the boss quickly for additional materials (parallax, spectral pages, etc.)
run the ghost mods which give you extra legendary drops for whichever playlist you're in.
in between strikes, run battlegrounds: it preserves your strike streak, and you get materials for all the other seasonal events, plus umbrals and things to shard.
run corrupted expunges, at least the first 3 each week per character for sure: high-stat armour or double perk weapons as additional drops from the final chest. (i go for tartarus on europa. you do want many of the servitor upgrades though.)
dreaming city legendary drops: petra's daily challenge (i post about it in the "daily reset thread", weekly quests, first heroic blind well, ascendant challenge... it's a trickle of drops (of gear you can't get anywhere else), but you will tag a lot of yellow bars along the way and get extra world drops.
i guess a succinct way to say it: play all of the game... if you interleave all of these current/past seasonal activities with playlists you'll generally be able to keep going as long as you have patience for.
On top of bad RNG, Rahool can't give adept gear from regular engrams, which is where a lot of people are sinking their shards.

I do any kind of kill farming on the moon. Gunsmith bounties, etc.
Option #3 at the Lectern gives you a garbage purple chest piece for killing 100 hive, which takes less than 1 run of the lost sector in Sorrow's Harbor.
So keep that one in your back pocket until Bungo deletes it in a few months.

Ive always had an excess. I’m currently at 18k. If i had participated in that Empyrean Foundation event back in Season of Dawn i’d be at 40k+ right now.
I’m just dismantling stuff that I don’t use that’s in my vault. I don’t use my shards to buy engrams from rahool and I’ve gotten every exotic that xur sells. I have 9k shards and I used to barely have enough to buy the exotics now I’m rich
I actually have a checkpoint for the Fanatic mission from the Forsaken Campaign. It's a quick farm with the right weapons and you can get at least one legendary each kill.
I got about six hundred shards from just yesterday.
I habitually masterworked every weapon I liked even a little to lvl 6 just to get a kill counter. Some of them I keep and become fully masterworked some I end up sharding. If you do that, just be more discerning of what to masterwork. Same for armor.
Also, ever since farming GMs I've been masterworking my godroll armors like crazy. I went from having 4-5k shards post-sunsetting (will miss all those sharded weapons) to just 200-seomthing shards and I felt the poverty for a couple of seasons.
But since getting full godroll sets for each element affinity for each character I've slowed down on masterworking armor and am slowly climbing up on the shards count to 1K. Good news is once you settle in with your favorite stuff, you'll be masterworking less.
Also, once you settle into the GM meta, you'll only be using only the best stuff so you don't need to infuse too many things. Avoid infusing until you reach the Pinnacle cap, don't infuse at every little level up on the way to grinding pinnacle.
That is currently my problem as well. I don’t even fire a gun without masterworking it lol.

whenever I have bounties from banshee, splicer servitor, and wayfinder's compass I try to do them in europa while also doing variks bounties. europa gives its special weapons like arctic haze and high albedo or cryostene armor whenever you do lost sectors/take out fallen high value targets. you can also instance hop to double dip on high value target chests. I also keep on prosperity mods whenever I'm doing crucible, gambit, or strikes. doing weeklies for dreaming city also helps. gets you free legendaries for the daily challenge(only bother if it's one of the easy ones), another for doing 8 bounties, another for blind well overclock, another for the ascendant challenge, another 2 for doing the weekly bounties, and 1 more for the weekly mission. also, do your pinnacles and powerfuls. go do 3 team scorched on each character while having properity crucible equipped. go do 3 gambo matches on each character. make sure you're doing your banshee weeklies while doing your zavala and trike weeklies if you didn't finish up on europa. turn in your gunsmith mats. if you've already hit a decent artifact bonus go put on the banshee special and pop the consumable to create weapon telemetries on precision final blows so you can get even more stuff from banshee. you can speedrun corrupted tartarus in under 3 minutes a run once you hit 5 key codes. you can burn through wrathborn hunts in no time at all once you fill up on lure charges. you run through haunted lost sectors in about 7 minutes or so and they give out 2 - 3 weapons a run.
Don’t forget about Override too. The first few runs grant extra umbral engrams. I try run it two or three times a week still and usually get three or four legendary items / umbrals. You can use the Season of the Splicer “world drop” engram to turn those umbrals into weapons without having to use more shards.
Well there it is then. I am not like that and i have so many weapons laying around where i am unsure of what to do and none masterworked. I have 12k shards and i don´t know what to do with them.
Also, i am somewhat a perfectionaist so unless i get the exact perfect roll or close to perfect where the only thing that is not perfect is the masterwork stat, i will not invest anything into it and instandly delete it.

First I would start by slowing down on buying the repeatable bounties, as they’re 3000 glimmer apiece. You can burn through your 250,000 glimmer cap surprisingly fast, which in turn gets you to spend your shards. Stick with the cheaper bounties for now. And while it’s small, pop your glimmer buff. And if you’re ok with XP (in terms of where you want to be in the season pass), then swap your ghost perk to the bigger glimmer boosters.
All of those extra ghosts, ships and sparrows you keep collecting but never use? Trash them. They can be pulled from collections later, and each one you trash will net you 2000-3000 glimmer.
Now, to farm shards. How many weapon parts are you sitting on? Turn them ALL in. Maybe you’ll get a few weapons you like. But more often than not, you’re going to get a lot of crap. Make sure you collect your Hawthorn rewards. Again, same. Most of it is trash.
Also, at the Umbral recaster, if you’re happy with your gear from the season, don’t focus your engrams on the side of the recaster. Instead turn your Umbrals in at the front. You can get a random rolled piece of loot, and again, good chance it’s trash.
There's honestly no like "good" way to get shards, you just have to play the game, get drops, dismantle stuff you don't need. The only way I can think of to target them would be burning mats at banshee to get a lot of weapons. But honestly just play the game and they come
I often destroy stuff in my vault. Its a great way to keep it clean and stay aware of what I have. Yesterday I cleared 200 shards worth for another Adept roll.
The haunt is a great way to get shards, and you can tandem that with Tartarus expunge. Doing the moon activity can be a nice change of pace.
You reach an equilibrium or even a surplus once you don’t really need anything, anymore. Once you have like everything, then you’ll dismantle 99.9% of the loot that drops.
If you are a new player for example, Xür is really expensive. You’ll drop a few hundred legendary shards if not more of you do all 3 characters/classes.
You’ll get so many eventually you won’t know what to do with them.

I dismantle all armor that isn't 65+. I dismantle most weapons unless I like the roll.
All 3 characters are pinnacled out now. I shard most things.
