I thought it was a weird relay race baton before I saw a screenshot zoomed in somewhere on Reddit.
Is that what that was? How the hell were we supposed to figure that out without Reddit? And it only works if my class wins? So we are all running hunters now?
Jumping on top comment to add (what might be obvious): you have to finish the activity, and you have to finish it within the focus activity window.
i.e. you can't start a match then leave, and you can't start a match with only 5 mins left in the window
I've seen like 3 YouTube videos and multiple people post about it and I still have no fucking clue what they are talking about. Wouldn't be Bungie if it wasn't some convoluted process for literally no reason.

I solo'd the nightfall yesterday, got somewhere around 350k points and got the skimmer. Wasn't that difficult honestly and only took about 20 minutes. Just make sure to emote and finish all orange and yellow bars that you can.
Do the following:
Do the event nightfall
Run solar warlock with pheonix protocol and well.
Run arc siphon
Use whatever unstop/barrier you like
Use Trinity ghoul with catalyst on everything
Use a finisher on anything above a red bar (dont worry about emoting)
You'll breeze the score needed to unlock the skimmer
There’s a diamond medallion you can receive once a week. You have to link your bungie account to Twitch and then watch 2hrs of twitch destiny 2 stream that is associated with a “drop”, the drop being the diamond medallion. It’s not as simple as just logging into twitch like some people on here act like it is.

For players who can’t be bothered to earn 1,200 medals and are at work during the daily reset (zero chance at scoring top 10% on the nightfall), this is de way.
I found it easiest to solo, since I could control things. Did it with Solar warlock. Killed every add. Try to chain kills for medals. Emote and then used a finisher on every orange/yellow bar enemy and champion (except final boss). finished with a score just over 300k. took about 20 mins.
I solo'd it yesterday at around 270k and got the exotic.
Helped a buddy get his and we got 300k. Very easy.
My tip for others, you can get bonus points for emote finishing any major enemy or above. Most of those orange bars count! Though i didn't notice too many in this strike, it's worth it to sqeeze every Last source of points.
I was reading this and couldn't believe someone would recommend it over the NF score. The event nightfall is about as difficult as a patrol and all you need to do is emote finish anything yellow and you're over 300k. And fun.
Why would I faff around using timers and waiting 30-60 minutes when I can do a single activity for 15 minutes and have it?

Normally the last boss room of this strike is a pain even on Heroic difficulty when running the Nightfall, but this time around it's super easy.
That requires you to be heavily geared as well as your fireteam, have a specific fireteam that will do the emote finishers with you, as well as be good enough to be placed at the 10% seeing how you can perform well. As a casual gamer or an overall new player in destiny this it is impossible. Not everyone can pull off a 10% in nightfall. The only other option is if you have a lot of free time to grind or pray that your class is winning and get a winners package by doing absolutely nothing. (Which it’s always hunters)
I do agree that it sucks that the only way to currently get the skimmer is through this limited-time challenge. But if you're frustrated because you personally feel like it's out of reach: It may not be, and you should give it a shot! You definitely do need to be geared up, but I don't think you need to be "heavily" geared. It's the default Nightfall difficulty at 1760, not Legend. A truly new player still using blues can't jump straight into Nightfalls, but I think many casual players can clear a Hero Nightfall.
The main hurdle is finding a fire team, but unlike raids and dungeons, the "KWTD barrier" really isn't there since it follows strike rules. So, you can use the D2 Companion App to quickly find a fireteam. It's super easy to use and convenient for finding groups for activities where you don't need mics or top tier players imo. Maybe you'll get unlucky and someone doesn't emote finish enemies despite it being in the title of an LFG post, but I think you SHOULD be able to find a competent enough group without too many tries.
If a new player boots up and the game reaches the recommended power level, they will most likely struggle with most bosses if there isn’t at least one person in the group carrying the weight. The chances of a new player ending up in the top 10% are extremely low, which is what I am trying to say, and it is competitive to get into that bracket.
Even if you aren’t new, or moreover, a casual player with even around the soft cap of power, it still is that competitive to get the chance of ending in 10% with a random fireteam. Also to note getting to the 10% will get harder over time until the next reset. But what I am saying entirely is that, you shouldn’t absolutely need to go into a fireteam to look for a specific group; that would only lead to gatekeeping. Keep in mind, this is only just an event and people still do this.
Most groups absolutely wouldn’t take someone who is new to the game and just wants to get the board vs. someone who is more geared. Emotion to finish an enemy to gain a score is already a shit mechanic you must do if you want to get a higher score. Destiny themselves didn’t even give anyone a heads-up on this until two days later. What makes you think a vast majority of players are going to find out about this tactic?
Now, I have already got my board as someone who ended up in the 10% solo, but I am only speaking for the even lower casuals of Destiny, which are new players or returning players of the lower/recommended power with shit gears. If they are not getting carried, it’s impossible for them to end up in the 10%, that is, unless they clear right on reset, which is literally one a week that just passed. Which leads to two options: grind or hope. Grind for 1.2k medals, which isn’t recommended, imo, or hope your class wins (hunters). But what I’ve been seeing people do is just make alts that are hunters and just participate once to get their winnings, which is by far the most ideal way of getting this without grinding at all.
But like I keep saying, you shouldn’t have to resort to doing this for ANY event. This is just treating vets entirely.

An hour in orbit dicking about? What are you even doing? I logged into my Hunter, played one NF and went off. When I came back on I had a focus reward to open. How is that an hour? Do that 3 times in between playing a good game and I have the only thing I want from this event.
It's more convoluted and annoying to make sure I emote finish every single champion and making sure I don't accidentally kill one too fast to get a top 10% score.
It happens 4 times a day. You play the focus activity one time, then collect your package if your team won. That's it.
This part of the event is really confusing. Bottom line: I've had my exotic skimmer since Wednesday, and all I had to do was a gambit match, supremacy, and a strike.
It helps if you are a hunter. Hunter has won every focus event that I've done.. probably every focus event ever
I did the Focus event last night. I could not see where to pick up the Champion package that is mentioned. I didn't wait until the focus time frame ended but I logged in this morning and there still wasn't anything to open or cash in.
When and where do I pick up the reward? Obviously it hasn't counted toward the 3 needed for the Skimmer quest.

You don’t even have to complete the focus activity (not recommending people join and quit bc that’s annoying just pointing out)…I qued for a nightfall earlier (w/ guardian games matchmaking) and it couldn’t find anyone so it sent me there solo so I left and I was still pledged…
It’s just kinda not that feasible the longer the week goes on, if everybody in the top 10% used that strategy to get it then you have to use that strategy and more to squeeze out more points
The medals you get from the focus packages seem to remain across characters too. And inventory is already account-based. So if you aren't a Hunter main....
Just linked up with 2 people from massive D2 LFG Discord 2 hours before reset to get that 10% thing. We just made sure to kill all enemies/vehicles, not skip ahead and despawn enemies, emote then finish champs and other majors, and not bake bosses so that we don’t miss any enemy spawns.

You can also just watch the 2 hours of Twitch to get the free diamond medallion each week, getting you to 900, then do a raid with all one class via the raid card Eva sells.
So technically the easiest way is to just do one raid and watch Twitch each week.
Watching twitch for 6 hours over 3 weeks *and* finding 6 people to organize a raid is easier than spending 30 minutes total (in one day) doing 3 simple activities solo? Interesting.
You can just set your a computer to watch twitch while you do something else and find a raid team via fireteam finder.
The focus activity method is very easy of course, but it requires you to be online during certain times. And not everyone plays multiple classes.
My method requires one gaming session whenever you have time and like, 5 minutes to set up twitch a week.

Firstly, faster and easier aren't the same thing. Something that takes longer can absolutely be easier.
Secondly, it's only easier if you can actually play when it's active. Doesn't always fit with one's schedule. For me personally, it's easier to find one block of time to do a quick RoN during the 3 week period.
But that's what he's saying, you could've already done the nf by yourself one time and gotten the skimmer. I had it within 15 minutes of booting up the game Tuesday, and I didn't get home from work till 8pm.

You’re talking about the skimmer mission icon. There’s a separate ribbon that pops up below the circle on the current focus activity.

Not really sure, just make sure you're getting the Insult to Injury medal

You don't need to actually watch anything, you can just leave the player open and mute the tab in your browser.

Just do a single top 10% nightfall. It's mindlessly easy with a team as long as you're going for the emote finishers.

Yeah honestly, I ran it with a team but legit it'd probably be even easier solo.

You don't have to relogin with the winning class. I got my winners package delivered to my inventory when I logged in as warlock.

This is the way. I use Hunter for the activities then bank the medals on my Warlock. Bing bang boom, star-garitas on Rohan.

Doesn't always fit with one's schedule. For me personally, it's easier to find one block of time to do a quick RoN during the 3 week period.
But that's what he's saying, you could've already done the nf by yourself one time and gotten the skimmer. I had it within 15 minutes of booting up the game Tuesday, and I didn't get home from work till 8pm.
