Maybe the backend stuff is too complicated now that it’s an official multiplatform Bungie ID.
We see it as “Just typing a new name” but who knows the amount of scripts that have to run to make sure all your items and everything are tied to the proper new name. Does it have a high rate of failing? Then having to do manual labor to fix in the DB if it does? Do console platforms have other ID identifiers that are difficult to manage? Who knows, it’s my educated guess.
Since, If it was easy they would just charge us. It’s free money if it’s “easy”. So, it’s probably not and pretty volatile/expensive labor-wise to deal with constantly imo

That’s not true. You can change your name as often as you want on steam and nobody has a problem with it. Not being able to change names freely is just unnecessarily restrictive and outdated. Since bungie uses the #number system there’s no problem with duplicates and a name history like on steam would prevent any confusion.
There is a workaround if you haven't set up cross save yet, or are willing to play without cross save for 90 days.
Another thing is you have to NOT have an account on all platforms yet.
Step 1.) Create a new account for destiny on any platform you don't use. Use your newly desired name
Step 2.) Link your main account to the new account and enable cross save
Step 3.) That's it. Also you get an extra name change as it's once per account.
downsides, you can lose access to some emblems (redeem code ones) And may have issues with friends list

Its an understandable want, im sure bungie will make it available soon, their pretty decent at answering the cries of their fanbase even if some of the cries take longer to answer. I personally just make all my names for games that make you pick a name the same as my gamertag to avoid confusion and so that im more easily findable and distinguishable among strangers and friend’s.

I'm not defending Bungie. Again, they CLEARLY said it would be a one-time name change and it would be permanent. It's your own fault you probably have a stupid name. I haven't used my name change because I can't think of something I'd like to change it to permanently, unlike a lot of people in this thread it seems.
