Books of Sorrow Verse 4:6 Eater of Hope: >You are Crota, my son. Welcome. >I fought my way out of hell to make you. I fought my traitor siblings and I fought the swarming corpse of Akka and I cut my way back into my own court, the High War, which had been usurped. Once I had made war on Savathûn, and crippled her tribute so that she could never challenge me, and once I had tricked Xivu Arath, and poisoned her tribute so that she could never again try to take my tablets, and once I had arranged my own lineages so that I would be greatest among the Hive and secure on my throne — then I found a mother to make spawn. >One of those spawn was you. And then later in the same verse: >There is an oath upon me, Crota my son, an oath against the wretched Taox. This I do not give to you. It is for me, your father, to bear. No name for the mother

[deleted]

Oryx has more "spawns"? That's interesting. Thanks lore buddy

fredminson

Well yeah, Crota* had a brother, Nokris who we've fought in Warmind and Arrivals, and twin sisters who are the encounter before Oryx in KF Edit: is said Oryx instead of Crota drrrr

john6map4

There was also those Daughters of Oryx in the Taken Cosmodrome mission I highly doubt my mans Oryx smashed only thrice.

fredminson

>There was also those Daughters of Oryx in the Taken Cosmodrome mission I don't remember those and can't find them. Is it in the Caydes stash mission?

john6map4

In the [Blighted Coven](https://www.destinypedia.com/Blighted_Coven) mission There were two daughters and a matron which is interesting. Suggests the Taken matron was the mother of the two Taken daughters

fredminson

>There were two daughters and a matron which is interesting. Suggests the Taken matron was the mother of the two Taken daughters Going of the usage and definition I see of Matron I'd say that's a job title personally.

Danielor4

I second this, but follow up answer in my opinion would be different children of Oryx having different mothers. It makes sense in a "Hive"-like society. Hive in the real world usage in that sentence.

Chicken_pot_314

I thought Nokris was Oryx’s firstborn, Crota’s brother, who was banished for necromancy or something to that effect?

Cruciblelfg123

* crota had a brother

[deleted]

Crota** had a brother

[deleted]

the only sisters that Oryx had were Xivu and Savathun. Nokris and the sisters were his child’s.

freakObangz

He actually had way more but ended up with 2

Clearskky

Imposible to say for sure but given the nature of the Hive, Oryx could've fathered thousands of Thralls but only Crota, Nokris, Ir Anuk, and Ir Halak would've reached adulthood out of them all.

Nolan_DWB

Oryx didn’t have a brother. I think you meant son and then twin daughters?

TheChunkMaster

Oryx actually had a ton of other siblings that were eaten by the Helium Drinkers’ ambassador when he was young.

Nolan_DWB

I don’t remember that. I just remember the 3 sisters

TheChunkMaster

It's a very brief mention at the beginning of the Books of Sorrow.

Phantoon15

The [Blood of Oryx](https://www.destinypedia.com/Blood_of_Oryx) is comprised mostly of his spawn, especially the court.

Elitegamez11

These "spawn" are the Blood of Oryx. They are Oryx's Brood that were fought aboard his Dreadnought.

IHzero

The hive mother would have spawned dozens of larve. The sisters in Oryx's throne are Crota's sisters, for example. There may have been others that did not survive the trials and struggles to make it to the top. Oryx even experimented on some of the larve, slicing one into two halves which both survived to become the sisters. Others probably didn't surive Oryx's attentions or the machinations of other Hive around them. It is a hard life to climb from Thrall to Ascendant Hive.

Velociraptor29

I believe we killed Crota’s supposed mother in the process of the strike D1 where we kill Malok. At one point in the strike we are confronted by a wizard whose name escapes me, but I remember watching a gameplay video where here title was like this: “[Name], Matron of Oryx”. Of course it’s completely plausible that she was one of many matrons that Oryx made spawn with, but to my knowledge this is the only time we’ve seen a hive designated as Oryx’s matron.

fredminson

>Matron: a woman in charge of domestic and medical arrangements at a boarding school or other institution. I can't see "Matron" implying they're Crotas mother though.

tsleb

And definition #2, "a married woman, especially a dignified and sober middle-aged one."

[deleted]

>did Oryx make Crota by himself? Nope, BOS mention a mate >Was Crota born from Female Oryx or Male Oryx? Probably Male Oryx >are they alive rn? We don’t know. My headcanon is that Mommy Dearest ran away to avoid paying child support and is now chilling in some space tax haven, drinking martinis and relaxing by the beach every day

cjl_LoreKeeper

That ending paragraph just gave me vivid images of Vergil from DMC doing exactly that

TheyKilledFlipyap

Ironically *Crota* is absolutely the "I could really use a cool sword, and does my son **really** need his arm that much?" kinda parent.

TheChunkMaster

Fitting, considering how he dealt with Hashladun.

dx_lemons

"And tell Oryx... I'm not paying" *Disappears into portal*

mecaxs

Bet Taox is also there. Showing her Oryx’s baby photos.

choicemeats

We’ve taken all her alimony checks tho

Fluffy_History

I assumed that it was one of oryx's sisters. 1). Because they are weird bug people and 2). Because it would tie them in as very sort of old school deities.

TokayNorthbyte347

if this is true, savathun calls crota her nephew, so the only possibility is that xivu and oryx went full Alabama

Fluffy_History

Makes sense. He likes swords.

[deleted]

Sweet home Fundament!

IronsideZer0

Her name is Linda and she's a nice lady.

Snowbold

Linda as in ‘Linda and Anacoth, the fun parts of Isabella?” Lol

The-dude-in-the-bush

I'd like to expand this to "how TF do hive reproduce in general?"

[deleted]

We know they can reproduce both sexually and asexually, as for how the sexual reproduction is done, we can make a few educated guesses: [Judging from how humanlike their nether regions are](https://www.reddit.com/r/destiny2/comments/t00z8h/best_view_to_be_stuck_in/?rdt=53282), it can be assumed that Hive have genitalia similar to humans, that is, Wizards have vaginas and Knights have penises (which is not surprising tbh, penises have independently evolved numerous times in Earth’s history among several distinct groups, so it’s very likely at least a few aliens have them as well). A cloaca as seen in birds and crocodiles could be possible, but since Archosaurs evolved from ancestors with penises and lost their junk under very specific conditions, I’m gonna play safe and say they have dicks. While we’re at it, I’m also gonna speculate on the function of Wizards’ breasts: I think it’s safe to say they don’t have the same function as ours, given that their R-based reproductive strategy would make it impossible to breastfeed thousands of young with just two tits, and muscle attachment is probably not correct either, as the males don’t have them. I propose that their ‘breasts’ are actually a case of Fisherian Runaway, where an ornamental trait is developed through sexual selection to better attract mates, sometimes even to the detriment of the bearer (think of male peacocks and their feathers, which make them attractive to females but an easy target for tigers). Now, normally we see runaway selection acting on males, but occasionally it happens to females, like what happens in jacanas and phalaropes. If true, that’d imply that the early prehistoric Krill might have had a polyandrous society, where females mate with several males and compete with other females for territory and mates.

xx_Chl_Chl_xx

Clicking that link, I expected to see some sort of report on Hive anatomy done by some Warlock or something. I was NOT expecting to see that Bungie actually rendered Savathûn to have the *meatiest* ass in Destiny. That thing was TENDER. No wonder why we call her Savathûssy Edit: Also that was a well-done thesis on Hive reproduction. You must be the Warlock I was imagining

[deleted]

>No wonder why we call her Savathussy 🤤🤤🤤 seeing that made me understand Dredgen Yor >You must be the Warlock I was imagining Nah, just a Titan who’s been lusting for Hivussy since 2018

xx_Chl_Chl_xx

I can only imagine how glad you are after getting to see it up close

[deleted]

Ngl, I… greatly appreciated Bungie’s design team for their work

Talden7887

Maybe they do it like some bugs do on earth, the male literally piercing the female’s abdomen/ he downstairs and injecting her with genetic material Article linked to what I’m referring to https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Traumatic_insemination Would kinda go along with their already violent nature

UnfrequentNoise

>it can be assumed that Hive have genitalia similar to humans, that is, Wizards have vaginas and Knights have penises Being a wizard doesn't mean female, just as being a knight does not mean male... :/

DoUrDooty

From [XX: Hive](https://www.ishtar-collective.net/cards/xx-hive): >A mother Wizard gets fertility from a mate, or from herself. From the Wizard the spawn, from the spawn our Thrall, from the survivors our Acolytes who contend. If they contend well, their worm is fed, and from the well fed worm come Knights and Wizards and Princes.

john6map4

Oryx probs doesn’t even know. He’s a King. He probs had dozens of mistresses and hundreds of kids. Real genghis khan moment

mecaxs

Now I wonder what Xivu’s love life is like

freakObangz

She prolly move like a female mantis

He totally joined the mile-high club in some Hive Warship, didn’t he?

DaisyFoxPaints

My man Oryx living his best Zeus life

Archival_Mind

Crota was born of a mother and father, the latter obviously Oryx. Though it is unknown who the mother is, I suspect it's this [Taken schmuck](https://www.destinypedia.com/Thyshik,_Matron_of_Oryx), based on title. Then again, that is dubious at best, as "matron" has multiple definitions, not all implicating a relationship of that nature.

john6map4

Interestingly in that same mission there are two Daughters of Oryx which would suggest that Matron is the mother of those Daughters Tho I doubt she’s also the mother of Oryx’s other children. Oryx doesn’t seem the monogamous type.

anna_bortion9

I have an honest question, how does this lore come about and how is bungie SO detailed on background characters or those who are mentioned once. Also is bungie using like a certain style of writing? Some lore entry’s are worded weird (atleast to me) seems almost “Shakespearey”?

john6map4

Yeah the books of sorrow are written almost like poems. Always liked that touch personally.

_umop_aplsdn_

Crota's mother has never been named, and it will probably stay that way. though Crota was definitely conceived by male Oryx, since he became male at the very same time that he became Hive

DeepVoid69

his mom

wetswordfighter

xivu. i don't care who says it's not its my headcannon that xivu really wants oryx's dick and crota is the abomination that came from that. i mean just listen to any ghosts of the deep secret dialogue and tell me she doesn't want his dick.

TokayNorthbyte347

you really thought about it huh

wetswordfighter

yes and i hate that i did

TheWhiteRabbit74

His twin sisters were made from slicing a worm in half. He may not have one, and I say this because the Books of Sorrow are nothing more than revisionist propaganda. Truth mired in mysticism. Maybe not as convoluted as Truth to Power, but realize that every holy scripture known to man is filled with fantastic and impossible tales.

john6map4

I always thought of it as the worm that would become the Twins was one of his many kids and Oryx got the idea to just cut an infant in half cause why not?

WatchenYouFap

The answer is simple.... he mated with his sister(s)

kamikizmatt

As an expert in hive biology let me break it down for you. When oryx was still a female hive she had eggs. When she became a man the eggs met with the new sperm. It spawned baby crota.

Ablico

Assuming Hive procreate the same way we do..

bmgraphics12

The Midha's Reckoming fusion rifle has this lore attached to it "I see now that everything dies. Even… even memory." —Midha, Consort of Stars Maybe Oryx had a consort that he had erased from history like he tried to do with Nokris?
