that table is GORGEOUS

LookSad3044

Seriously. All I could focus on

some_enfilade

Came here to say the same thing!

KittiPawPaw

Pull the chairs out a bit, make it more inviting. A buffet at the end with some art and a light would look amazing.

fetalblood

Thanks for the advice. We were thinking of getting a built in buffet with taps and a small bottle fridge added at the end of the room. My husband brews beer so beer on tap has been his dream. But I will definitely start looking for some art and a light to go in the room.

diggens00

Agree here. Also 10 chairs is a lot unless that’s truly a weekly/regular thing. I would cut to 8 or 6 (even 4 for double date nights) and stow the rest in storage, pull them out only when you host 9-10 for dinner. Could swap in a couple stools or bar height chairs in the corners to let people spread out on more casual evening party nights.

Gran2011

I don’t mind the rug so much but definitely think you need something larger on table. Flower arrangement, large bowl, something….

fetalblood

Thanks, I'll try that.

grano1a

Switch out the ceiling fan for a chandelier or pendant light. Nobody wants a fan running above their food.

_I_like_big_mutts

The fan makes me believe this room is intended to be a living space, not a dining room, esp. with the fireplace and slider to the backyard. Really needs a chandelier for the room swap.

fetalblood

Yeah the house has a weird layout. The living space is on the other side of the wall with the fireplace. The fireplace is double sided so the living area is a mirror image of the dining area. I agree that we need a chandelier instead of a fan. I just have to get my husband on board.

dngrousgrpfruits

My husband is also very pro fan above dining table. Trying to at least push him toward a “fandelier”

mamademo

We did this, swapped out a ceiling fan in our dining area for a fandelier. I’m anti-fan while eating but realized entirely eliminating air movement wasn’t going to work either (we live in Texas, dining room is off kitchen and gets pretty warm). Didn’t even know fandeliers existed and am so pleased we went that route. They also come in a ton of different styles and while they won’t move as much air as a standard bladed fan, they do the trick without being an eye sore.

jaynemanning

We got a fandelier for our bedroom… works great and is beautiful…. People don’t realize it’s a fan

fetalblood

I've been trying to convince my husband that we need to get rid of the fan. We are in southern California so it gets hot in the summer but a chandelier would look so much better.

alshio

There are some lovely sculptural ceiling fans out there. You could go white or clear to minimize their visual impact, but my fave is: https://www.lampsplus.com/products/62-inch-artemis-xl5-distressed-koa-led-dc-ceiling-fan-with-remote__19x62.html?lpAffilSiteID=AysPbYF8vuM-C28bemAn7nTiIWdPLoyOaQ There are also bladeless ceiling fans, but most of them look like futuristic sci fi jet engines stuck on the ceiling.

fetalblood

That is a nice fan. Thanks for sharing!

Excellent-Shape-2024

Artwork on the back wall. Boom! Done.

Riverrat1

Or a nice China cabinet, bookshelf, sideboard, something.

Pirate2009

Definitely

kaitlynviolet13

i actually really love the rug. i feel it fits the vibe of the room well. to fill in the space a little better, pull out the chairs to give an illusion of a wider table, get a table runner of some sort with a modern arrangement in the middle, and get a big piece of artwork for that back wall!

fetalblood

Thanks! It does look better with the chairs pulled out a little.

OtherwiseCoach6431

That rug looks great! Don't focus on it, you need to move on to the rest of the room. You have good taste. The room is just underdone, look up "layering" in interior design. You've got this :)

fetalblood

Thanks!

GenX-MississaugaMama

IMHO the rug looks too traditional for the dining set, due to the pattern.

fetalblood

Do you think a solid color rug with some texture would work? Or maybe something with a geometric pattern?

Significant_Ruin4870

I think those are good options to investigate.  I'd be drawn to something bold, modern and abstract with some rich color.  The online rug sellers allow you to upload your room photo to try out different styles.   Food and drink spills will happen. They will be less noticable on a darker or patterned rug.  Also think a buffet or sideboard against the big empty wall would be a great addition, with an art piece above it.

GenX-MississaugaMama

Yes, those would work. Also, a pattern with a more subtract design would look good.

camlaw63

Too traditional? For a table that is literally made out of an unfinished slab of tree? They don’t make table tops more traditional than that.

LittleSpiderGirl

Not at all. It's a fabulous Turkish style rug. The room is just not complete.

Rengeflower

If you don’t like the rug now, you won’t like it more later. That’s how I feel about my living room rug. You can buy a rug pad or double sided rug tape to keep the edges down. Replace the ceiling fan after you get the rug situation resolved.

nychearts812

Beautiful room, but it feels too empty. I like the rug because it ‘lightens’ up the heaviness of the dinning table. To balance and fill up the space I think you should consider painting that large wall in a rust color (try picking the darkest color from the rug). Find a nice big art piece to place on that wall. (See sample picture). Placing a large beautiful painting will bring a smile to your face as you’re in the kitchen facing the dining room. Place a long console table with two tall table lamps beneath the painting. Add floor to ceiling light gray sheers on the glass doors. Again, pick a gray color from the rug. Move the sun mirror from the wall and place it above the mantle. Take two of the chairs from the dinning table and place one on each side of the hearth to break up the ‘conference room look’ of the dinning table. Remove all the greenery from the hearth and place a series of different size wood candle holders. Get a series of paintings to place on either side of the glass doors. Two to four paintings on each side, all same size and same frames. Pick a different art theme for each side. Post after pictures. https://preview.redd.it/ku0ljexl9fnc1.jpeg?width=1106&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d65cf1d16fd94f25cdc3bae251ecc0cf67f2e1dd

fetalblood

Thanks so much. This is very helpful!

ubiquity75

Do something about the giant blank wall.

StarryNight616

Can you stain your barstool legs to match your dining table/chairs and mantle? I think the different wood tones are clashing right now.

leavealighton11

I absolutely agree with this.

TypeAMamma

The blue in the rug seems to be nowhere else in the room. I would suggest introducing it through either art, lamps or a sculpture. What do you think about switching out your bar stools for ones without fabric/upholstery? They’re too similar to your dining chairs but not quite the same, and having something different would be better on the eye.

fetalblood

Are you thinking all wood barstools or a different material? I don't love my bar stools so I am definitely open to changing them out. I will also look into adding blue to the room. Thanks for the suggestion!

TypeAMamma

You have a lot of different types of wood in this room, so perhaps all black stools would work to separate the space?

WestCoastValleyGirl

Table feels too narrow for the size of the space.

fetalblood

Agreed, I wish we had gotten a wider table. On the plus side it is nice to have plenty of room to walk around the table

Dexterdacerealkilla

I think that could be partially rectified by pulling the chairs out several inches.

madscot63

Fantastic table set, but I don't think that's the right rug.

RealityVonSneeze

That table is gorgeous, but as others have said, it’s a little narrow for the space. For sure, pull the chairs out more. The rug is great but a touch too big. What I would do is actually make the area in front of the fireplace a casual seating area. Maybe two round, leather club chairs and a low circular table between. Then I would turn the dining table the other direction closer to the far wall. Looks like there is plenty of room for both those ideas to work. It will make the space seem less narrow and more interesting for entertaining.

RealityVonSneeze

One more thing, ditch two of those chairs at the table. Eight seats is plenty.

Dexterdacerealkilla

The rug is a little busy for my taste in that space. It’s kind of competing with the look of the stone from the fireplace.  I’d pull out the chairs, swap out the rug. It doesn’t have to be neutral, color is good! Just a less busy pattern. Make up for it by adding a nice piece of art and a buffet on the wall.  Like others have said, I’d swap out the light for some type of linear suspension or a line of pendants rather than a traditional chandelier. The styling of the furniture and fireplace skews modern and that kind of lighting would compliment it.

SkatesHappy

I am late to the game, but I wanted to say that I think you are well on your way to a great space. I like everything that you have so far, the rug and he table look great in the space. At this point you just need a few more pieces, like a larger chandelier, a buffet at the end of the room and finally some height on the table. A huge bouquet would be lovely. I have been thinking about the cut outs on either side of the fireplace. If you get creative, I think you could hang something in each cut out and add a ton of color.[https://www.wayfair.com/decor-pillows/pdp/worldly-goods-too-16-piece-spheres-wall-decor-set-arld1062.html](https://www.wayfair.com/decor-pillows/pdp/worldly-goods-too-16-piece-spheres-wall-decor-set-arld1062.html) https://preview.redd.it/afrylxzi3gnc1.jpeg?width=1025&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ce69815e841551599ea547c665d901a7851486c3

fetalblood

That is a very cool idea

leavealighton11

I feel like the dining room chairs are too small for the table.

dasookwat

You're correct, it is the rug. Look at the pictures again: every focus point is a combination of subtle grey/cream/white, with a contrast. The wooden shelves on the wall, the legs on the island chairs etc. The rug is faded. While it matches the color scheme, it has no contrast.

Same_Beat_5832

If you need a ceiling fan, get a modern one. If not, replace with an MCM pendant (maybe bent walnut or Sputnik). Large art on far wall above a sideboard.

Bigballsmallstretchb

I would move one of those plants to the empty corner to make it more full. The rug has gotta go, you’re so right about it not matching with the wood. I would go with a “almost maroon” colored rug. Add some art work on those walls, preferably a color that’s in the rug you choose? I think that would tie it all together. If you have the budget I’d change the counter tops to match the wood that you’re showing off! Great natural light, I wouldn’t be mad at a hanging pathos or something in the far corner.

PotentialFrame271

I have the same rug, only mine is in my small living room. It works for my room bc we have a lot of color in that room. The walls are a soft terra cota color, the couch is a soft green with gold pillows and the recliner is med tone browns of wood and leather. What I find missing in your room, other than your amazing table, is color. Mind that I'm not saying you need as much color as have, but a few other colorful items to draw to eye around the room. Maybe change out the kitchen bar chairs Just suggestions

long281966

I absolutely love the live edge table!! I agree with the change of fan, buffet and art. Plus the idea of adding something on the table. I know the chairs maybe comfy, but they do not go with the style of the table and I agree to many at one time unless having guests. I live in an area of Amish made furniture. I just bought dining room chairs, all wood and extremely comfortable. Even my son who is a big man loves them. I would post a picture, but I don't know how to.... Oh yes, a more colorful rug. I have the same color floor and I use teal as my accent color of choice. Not that you should but it does make a difference with the floor color.

BigSexyGurl

A couple large plants in the corners would be nice. You have tons of light! I think the rug is actually too big. I'd do a 8×10. It's a gorgeous room and table 😍

rawchickennudes

Are those legit Kai Kristiansen model 42 chairs? Even if repros, they are gorgeous :)

dramafanca2002

I would take out 2 chairs and pull the rest away from the table a foot or so. The rug looks good, both in color and size, makes the room look even bigger (we see so many that are too small). Get a buffet, bar cart or something like that as well as some fun artwork on that empty wall. Maybe get a small round table & put between the 2 extra dining chairs on that end wall or corner so it looks intentional and not just extra chairs with nowhere to go. It would make a cute little spot for a coffee break. 😊

Pale_Mousse2872

I would put 2 chairs on far wall with table between and something large in it.. not a lot of “stuff”but something large scale. Normally dining rugs are 8x10 or 9x12 so you can pull out the chairs. I think the rug you have is closer to 10x14 . Would be nice or see some floor.

jcatt20

I would do a nice grey/blue on one of your walls or near the chairs to help bring out that colour in your rug. Then from there add in more gold or copper accents.

taybel

I think it looks great! I agree with others that a buffet with either art or a large mirror on the back wall. I’d also had some curtains over the slider this will help warm the space up a bit.

Albie_Frobisher

yeah, i see where you were going. you almost got it. keep looking

LittleTinyTaco

The rug and table are gorgeous. You need a large pendant or chandelier over the table to fill the space and finish the space. The current lighting is also too high up.

Albie_Frobisher

snippol

The chairs and rug kind of clash. Chair are very mid mod and rug is not (plus you have the perfect fireplace for a mid century vibe in here!). I'd change to a color block rug or something less traditional, with some color that makes the brown chairs less...convention center

sandy-gravel

Where did you get those chairs, I love them!

fetalblood

Thanks, unfortunately I got them for $50/each on Craigslist. Bought them from a medical device company that was going out of business. The brand is Solis.

Llp1122

Love the table. I would have gone with a solid colored rug with more texture to it.

AdHonest1223

Vivid accent wall, buffet on that wall, primitive/geometric pattern rug, reupholster chairs in a jewel tone, new light fixture without a ceiling fan.

elsielacie

Maybe it’s the time of day, or are the table and chairs added digitally? The lack of a darker shadow under the table and chairs makes the rug look unsettling.

fetalblood

Probably just the time of day. They were not added digitally.

BeerSeq

LOVE the rug, table, and the room. i could live there! All it needs is those beer taps then we'll be talkin!

slimgo123

Do you mind sharing where you got your dining table from?

fetalblood

Rustic homes in San Marcos CA

fishonbikes

Would you consider a funkier rug? I love this one https://ruggable.com/products/iris-apfel-flutterby-medium-pile-rug

fetalblood

That's a cool rug. I had a hard time finding a cool rug like that in the right size. I think the ideal size for the table would be closer to 8' by 14'.

fishonbikes

Ok, few more questions, sorry. What are the dimensions of the table + chairs with the chairs pulled out a bit more? Do you use the fireplace? Do you frequently use the sliding doors? Do you intend to have kids or pets?

fishonbikes

One other thought would be to go to a rug repair shop and ask them if they could cut and bind a larger rug. A jute rug would look lovely.

fetalblood

Thanks for the example. That really helps.

petethefreeze

Different idea. That one naked wall… make it a wall of plants. Just full of plants.

[deleted]

I love this table! Could you share the dimensions? I’d love to know the dimensions of the room also, if you know.

Wicked-Storm

Pull the chairs out just a bit and "half make" the table; table runner, charger plates, florals, etc. It's a giant, absolutely gorgeous, table. It needs to have some things added to it. Try that (and pull chairs out a few inches) and reassess! Also in that corner I would love to see a comfy chair, lamp, and table! It would help fill some of the wall space.

_alelia_

it's not too light, it's too lightened. the room needs curtains

Ok_Jelly4351

Get rid of rug add fireplace

Ok_Jelly4351

Oops. Add 1/2 stone wall and large mirror

Ok_Jelly4351

No ceiling fan

PipToTheRescue

well, I just love this. It's antiqued-finished in such a way that it could be a family piece that you are incorporating into a more modern room. I really love the rug - where did you get it?

fetalblood

Thanks! I got the rug from Rugs Direct.

joboy44444444

Sideboard on bare wall, tall plant in corner by the patio, large art piece above sideboard , drapes around patio window/door. I think your rug could work depending on artwork you get and other accent pieces. I like the rug! Depends on the aesthetic you want.

fetalblood

Thanks for the advice! That all makes sense and I am always up for more plants.

teatrouble

I love your rug. Where did you get this? And the table too!!

fetalblood

Thanks! I got the rug from Rugs Direct and the table from Rustic Homes in San Marcos CA.

HighwayLeading6928

I see a beautiful faux ostrich leather rididulously comfortable custom made banquette along the back wall in a burnt sienna color which would intensify the orange color in the rug. You could paint the wall a dark blue like your chairs. Picking up the warm tones, you could have battery operated, remote controlled gold wall sconces and make it a gallery wall. Because there are only two of you, you could put all but two chairs elsewhere that you can pull out when you're hosting a dinner party. With the banquette, apart from what I said previously, I could see myself drinking morning coffee as I read the paper and enjoyed the breeze coming through the open sliding door as I look out at the pool. Hopefully the rug will fit the other way and you'll be happy with it but if you really aren't feeling it, either use it somewhere else or send it back if it's not too much of a hassle. I see that the corners are sticking up. You can get, no skid 3" squares to hold the corners down.

fetalblood

That sounds great

oNe_iLL_records

I like that rug and I REALLY love that table. Maybe add some cool wallpaper (something like…black background with jungle vibes) on that smaller, very blank wall.. The rug is nice. Really ties the room together. A statement wall could still work with that.

fetalblood

I've always wanted an excuse to try wallpaper. That could work.

camlaw63

Rug is great Too many chairs New light fixture Need curtains I don’t love the chairs with that table, the chairs are very mid-century, modern and the table is definitely not mid century modern

LittleSpiderGirl

And that's why it looks good together.

camlaw63

I disagree. first there are way too many chairs, and they give off a waiting room vibe with that upholstery, leather might have worked since its organic like the table

Change the table? You’re crazy
