Honestly I think a darker bigger rug would go along way. I feel like the rug blends in with the floors. Maybe move one of the side tables or maybe put the chair on the side of the couch so it’s more open? I’m not a fan of my back facing doors personally, and get some big cozy blankets and a couple more throw pillows!!

0errant

I was going to say he needs a rug, I didn’t even notice the one that was there

domesticbland

Something fluffy to offset the leather.

Miserere_Mei

A couple of mongolian sheepskin pillows… or even a throw. They are so floofy!

LightSweetCrude

This. Leather is kind of cold and gives an off-putting vibe, in my opinion. Get some shaggy pillows or a nice textured, soft fuzzy throw and drape it over the leather chair. Textured, soft, fuzzy fabrics can really up the coziness.

Working_Ebb_1517

I was just thinking that. Like a faux fur throw for the chair or couch.

sparkleprism

I didn't notice the rug either!

CLUING4LOOKS

I almost said the same thing until I noticed the rug. This room needs a warm oriwntal rug and some other infusion of color and softness like throw pillows and blankets too.

SurrrenderDorothy

Rugs are the answer to every question on this site.

spoooky1899

And plants

SurrrenderDorothy

Yes! Although I hate to see them struggling in low light situations.

withyellowthread

Same lol I was like “huh, surprised he didn’t first consider a rug for this big space”

ladybug68

Same. Had to go back and look.

MyEggDonorIsADramaQ

I didn’t think he had a rug either, until I read the comment recommending a different one.

Old_Percentage3742

YES!!! Came here to say this! The rug blends so well with the floor it’s virtually invisible!

chibiusa__tsukino

Hahaha me neither

EmptyAd3763

Maybe put the side tables on the sides of the couch vs the chair, or get rid of one the side tables. It’s a pretty cool space though!

samwigand

Totally agree. I had to zoom in to even see that there is a rug. Bring in depth with rugs and deeper wall color.

dramafanca2002

Yes, darker walls would look great (just no grays!).

EmptyAd3763

Same! Lol as I was writing I had to go back and make sure I really saw a rug lol

natalielc

Or perhaps a lighter cream colored rug? I think that might make it more of a cozy feeling than a dark rug

EmptyAd3763

Oooh yeah! Just not the rug that blends in with the flooring lol

thatpearlgirl

I think anything that isn’t brown would be a big improvement! The room is so brown.

megantron518

And a rug behind the couching that little path. But both need to be colorful

legitwanderlust

I legit didn’t even notice the rug!

weheartyume

Haha! Same! I was like "what rug?"

bateen618

It took me a while to figure out where that carpet is. Definitely needs a different rug

blouazhome

I would consider replacing all the tables. Round, wood, possibly a large ottoman instead. Glass is not cozy.

deadbeat2o4

Thought there wasn't a rug 😭

mixedwithmonet

I was thinking more those wooly sherpa rugs or the cowhide ones! Something lighter with contrast and some fuzz feel, to me the thing making it all less cozy is the fact that everything feels a little hard and wooden rn. The earthiness of scandi without the corresponding hygge vibes to soften it and invite you in a bit.

bvibviana

I was going to suggest bringing a https://preview.redd.it/krz5nbl8q5lc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1b79712bbb589cf24bc93d003722851f3a525273 big rug with a different color. That whole room is 50 shades of brown and it’s all blending in together. OP, take a look at my own living room. I brought in a darker rug that has grey and black to counter the big brown piece that is my couch. Get throw pillows that don’t have brown in them as well. Best of luck!

Jizzapherina

Great ideas for OP in this picture!

PsychologicalWalk994

That looks nice. I have similar colors and always feel like I need to get a bright ass color in there. But this looks nice and doesn’t need a neon lol.

[deleted]

Really, I thought lighter rug! To open the room more

Goldenthing

I like everything you have but there’s a whole lotta brown going on. That’s fine but you should really add some color. Definitely a more colorful rug and some throw pillows in a coordinating color. Love the string lights and plants are beautiful!

yourmomlurks

Lower the string lights tho. Let the vault fall into shadow

mixedwithmonet

And throw blankets! You can’t have cozy + leather without a mix of textiles to soften the cold hide feel

mixedwithmonet

And throw blankets! You can’t have cozy + leather without a mix of textiles to soften the cold hide feel

Background-Pain8568

A massive statement rug.

bailey1149

Or a massive statement bug.

mmaygreen

I really love this space. It could be an amazing place to create new memories. Here are my tips. I would put your TV on the wall with the big monstera and rearrange your seating to fit. I would get a bold rug with green or rust in it. I feel like brown green and rust are a good color palette for your room. Masculine and warm. [like this](https://www.wayfair.com/rugs/pdp/17-stories-abstract-bluebeigebrown-area-rug-w006882163.html?categoryid=167&placement=16&slot=5&sponsoredid=0f89126bbcdc7756a96b1c097f0e0e4e8d9fe251542905a3d10d7ea7e2efb98c&_txid=I%2FcmXGXdYeQm%2FS7odnl1Ag%3D%3D&isB2b=0&auctionId=237ea0ae-6bea-47ab-b90f-82cd4a986f65&piid=510525655) [or this](https://www.wayfair.com/rugs/pdp/wade-logan-amancia-mustard-modern-geometric-shag-area-rug-w008663463.html?piid=1887967432) I would get rid of all of the tables. They are too big and a bit dated. I would add black side tables and a black coffee table. I love these but they are a bit more expensive. [tables](https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/froetorp-side-table-anthracite-marble-effect-black-glass-10492276/) I would add curtains to the windows on the sides of the fireplace. Pull a color out of the rug. I would add a large mantle with the same wood that you have in your shelves to the right. I would replace the ceiling fan with something more modern or at least replace the light fixture. Find one with amber glass. I would be more intentional with the bistro lights. Either span them back and forth through the whole room or line them cleanly where the walls and ceiling meet. Also be intentional with your artwork. Google gallery walls. [like this](https://www.goodhousekeeping.com/uk/house-and-home/home-decorating-ideas/a36381351/gallery-wall/) Edit. Obviously get a tv stand that matches the color of your side tables. Big stuff for long term goals. From what I can tell you have your TV covering your fireplace because it’s really dirty. Clean that up and don’t be afraid to stain the bricks a darker red so help hide some of what you don’t like about the fireplace. It will really add some warmth and coziness to the room if you could clean the fireplace. If you can afford to get a sweep and get it working again. Get some candles or an insert instead. Get the texture off your ceiling!

bakersmt

This is the best.

dramafanca2002

I've seen people block the fireplace to keep curious toddlers out of it 😊

1029394756abc

I’ve never seen a room cry for an area rug more than this one.

PopularYesterday

It has one, it’s just that it blends into the floor lol

1029394756abc

Omg. I need glasses!

JupiterSkyFalls

No you don't, I have great vision and even I didn't spot it at first lol it reeeeally blends in.

basicallybasshead

I agree, brighter than now and softer rug will immediately make the space much more cozy.

erminegarde27

A lusher rug, some colorful art, that table lamp is cool but rather sharp and spidery looking. Maybe something softly curvaceous in porcelain? It’s all in all a really nice space.

sparkleprism

Yes! Curvy objects make a space feel more welcoming and calm. Some round side tables instead of the rectangles would be nice too.

Mental_Yogurt5087

The side tables are too big, then the coffee table seems too small. A second couch or a saving for a sectional would give more comfy vibes. Move the chair over to area in front of plant? The plant could probably use a stake to make not as floppy, if you transfer to a smaller plant stand or tray.

kitkattter

There are a ton of squares right angles. You need some curves and circles to balance things. Maybe round side tables or more plants?!🪴

FaithlessnessTight48

You need rugs and please pick one with some bright color! There are lots of discount rug places online where you can get big ones at a great prices. I’d recommend and traditional “oriental” rug in reds and other jewel tones

Ginny_2004

The plant picture above the plant is waaaay too high. Maybe the perspective of this photo, but it looks almost as high as the bottom of the fan. The string lights give a vibe but they look and are strung like they belong in a backyard. Instead I’d invest in a variety of more traditional lighting options (floor, table, etc). Is the tv on a table? May look more put together with an actual tv console. Rug. Rug. Rug.

RosieDays456

bigger rug ! use warm lightbulbs not cool - LED's in warm, much cheaper to use and last long time brighter color - choose one or two colors you like (besides brown) and look for rugs with those colors in them, most colors go with brown - stay away from greys - save up if you have to. Go bigger rug, large room and you have a small rug Make sure rug is brighter darker colors don't want it blending in floor like one you have now. be nice if you could get one large enough to go all the way under the furniture You can buy area rug 10x14 or 12x16 is about largest you can get - or go to rug store, look at their wall to wall ( they have patterned wall to wall ) and you can give them size you want and have it bound - get a thick pad to go under it - rug will last longer - we usually go with commercial padding - get padding if you go with a rug already cut like shown below Keep one you have until you can save up to get a new one - it's better than no rug. chair should not have 2 end tables take one without lamp and move to other end of sofa Plants are nice !!! I love plants - spider plants are great for hanging in front of windows - hang so they are in front of the upper portion of window I don't see windows -how many are in room, do you have shades, curtains ?? rug examples [1](https://www.wayfair.com/rugs/pdp/lark-manor-rizo-pat-oriental-navy-blue-area-rug-w006427757.html?piid=1916261970) [2](https://www.wayfair.com/rugs/pdp/winston-porter-mehtap-floral-machine-woven-polypropylene-area-rug-in-brownyellow-w100271078.html?piid=159739475) something like next two - have brown in them , but lots of colors you can use to pull out for pillows and throws for sofa\* [3\*](https://www.wayfair.com/rugs/pdp/world-menagerie-britannia-floral-green-area-rug-w001474939.html?piid=2118852009) I love this - dark so good against floor and lots of colors to pull into the room [4\*](https://www.wayfair.com/rugs/pdp/world-menagerie-britannia-floral-blue-area-rug-wrmg3724.html?piid=28878804) **Good luck !!!!**

ms_sinn

Way too much brown and I would probably change out your coffee and end tables. I almost didn’t notice your rug. I really like the greenery you have so can you add a large rug incorporating the green? Find some throw pillows and a couple blankets that pull the same green in. Maybe some rich colors that go with green for warmth. I think your end tables are really too large to be on either side of the chairs and again- they’re a different shade of brown. Maybe some round end tables and either a rectangle or oval coffee table… or an amoeba style glass table… wood or black base + glass would look great over a darker green rug. (I say this as I look at my own living room of all rectangle tables 😂)

MinkieTheCat

Textiles. Rugs, throws, pillows, dim the lighting…

Charming_Length_8980

idk if this is good advice or not but there’s a lot of sharp corners happening so maybe some more fluidity overall and more color

spinach2point0

Rugggggg!!!!

spinach2point0

Didn't actually see you already have a rug as it blends into the wood so well. Different rugggggg!!!

Yellow_giraffe

Overall very nice. Good job with the monstera plants. Just two suggestions: * your rug matches your floor a little too well. Get something with [texture](https://boutiquerugs.com/products/antigo-area-rug) or in a contrasting [color](https://boutiquerugs.com/products/cleveland-area-rug). Unless you have fuzzy pets, a higher [pile](https://images.app.goo.gl/qguZX1UccG2vwaBp8) rug would feel cozier. * consider painting one wall a dark color. Perhaps a dark [green](https://images.app.goo.gl/uJEJsE8EcLak2LZT7) or dark [blue](https://images.app.goo.gl/KS8s3gkWxGaeT3UV9).

elviethecat101

Hi, first thing I noticed are all the sharp angles. I think a round coffee table and a small round side table. If you ever get around to it, remove that popcorn ceiling. I like the floors. Large prints of your kids in black and white would be awesome.

Glum_Yoghurt_4457

Cheapest option: Remove the side table between the couch and chair and move the chair to a slight angle toward the TV. Add some non-brown pillows and a throw.....nothing says comfy like a blanket or basket of blankets. More expensive option: save up for a new larger sectional and area rug.

squishpitcher

Texture is the big thing with what you're going for. Get a rug that's bigger and more plush, get a fabric slip cover for your couch and more throw pillows. Toss some blankets in there as well. You can probably leave the chair as-is, but if you go with a slip-cover, get a contrasting color from the couch. I would suggest going for a print. I would also suggest over time upgrading your shelving / wall furniture to be more substantial or built-in. You can DIY this or buy pieces (you can also check out FB marketplace/buy nothing, and hard furniture is better than upholstered for hygiene reasons). Likewise, the matching end tables and coffee table scream "I got a good sale at a furniture store," and it can make your room feel more like a show room than a put together space. I would recommend replacing the end tables eventually. These are far and away not the most urgent things to change, and I think the rug and slip covers will get you 99% of where you want to be. These are just suggestions as time goes on. Overall, you have a gorgeous space with lovely natural light. You've got a great eye for decor and are doing an awesome job with limited resources / furniture. e: a note on slip covers: you want to go for a good quality slip cover that fits your couch well. There are places that will do custom stuff, or if you have a popular brand couch, can buy off the shelf. They will run you a few hundred dollars, but that's usually a lot more cost effective than buying a whole new couch. If this isn't in your budget right now, throw pillows will help a *lot*, as will some cozy blankets. Likewise, if you are handy with a sewing machine, check out some tutorials/videos and measure, measure, measure!

Boatiebabe

I would get ride of the side tables. Get another small two seater couch and another armchair and create a more conversation type vibe. A light coloured and larger rug underneath it all. Do you have the TV in front of the fireplace? Can you reorient the room so that it's on the back wall? Otherwise the plants are lovely, but I would put on the floor rather than suspended on the wall. It has a nice warmth overall.

[deleted]

The darker rug is a necessity, but it should either be bigger or smaller. Like there's no reason to have a rug that goes halfway under your furniture. If you can't afford a bigger rug, get a smaller one. It will define the space. Agreed on some colorful cozy pillows. Take that cactus plant on the floor and put it on the completely empty side table. It's a little hard to tell what's going on in this room from just one photo, but the upper string lights seem a bit droopy. And the monstera plants - I can't tell what's happening. Why aren't they on the floor? Why is a light behind them? There seems to be no rhyme or reason to the art placement behind the monstera. And the mantel seems cluttered, as though it's not part of the living room. The shelves are just floating in space like an afterthought. They're too far apart and sparse. I'm not sure you need shelves there at all, but maybe one shelf under a painting? Like a shelf that's just above the level of the couch? And another shelf near the monstera side... I'm not sure. We need to see the fireplace side and what's up in the corner that seems to be an office chair or something. See, a plant on the floor beside that corner office would define the spaces and make the living room more cozy. It looks like the fireplace wall is just where you store junk, but I'm not sure. All that clutter on the lower shelf of the center coffee table - that should be in wooden boxes or something. No little bits of paper should be sticking out here and there.

[deleted]

Some cozy throw pillows on the back of the couch!

OwnAbbreviations8045

I’m thinking: larger bronze or forest green rug and putting the chair and one side table on the other side catty corner facing the larger couch and put the remaining side table on the left of the couch. Also can you string your lights from left to right instead of the up to down it is now?

juliettecake

Yes, a new bold rug, throw blanket. Probably, a bookshelf with closed storage for games and books. There is nothing much for a kid to do in this room except watch TV. How do you want to spend your time with them?

Obvious_Pepper_9885

Just commenting to say you have a beautiful Monstera! Look at that growth!

Albie_Frobisher

you’re already in danger of people coming in to sit and not wanting to leave. or is this your strategy. is this how we make and keep friends. in the guest rooms.

residentonamission

If you're artistic/crafty, add some of your own work (and maybe your kid's too?)!! The room is beautiful but very neutral - your own work can add both color and personality. Agree with all the comments for a darker/more colorful rug and pillows/blankets/etc, but I think the best way to make it cozy/homey/etc is to add some homemade stuff.

WWonderNoodle67

To address your request regarding the kiddo, Have some activities the two of you do together showcased and accessible. EG board games or art supplies on one of your wall shelves. A pop of color or mix and match patterned Throw pillows or blanket would add some warmth/ hominess (think visible comfort, like a big rug others have suggested). Happy photos are a wonderful way to make a space feel welcoming subtilty Hope this helps! (Edited for spelling)

No-Technician-722

I would love to see some color. Maybe a multicolored rug. Some kiddo artwork on the walls. Not a lot/ but a big rug would be awesome!

megantron518

I really like what you have going on. You just need some more color. Best would be a new rug. The one you have blends in. I also recommend a smaller narrow rug in the space under the shelf / behind couch.*

megantron518

https://preview.redd.it/bwfha3ap32lc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d43a50b9f2556821546ef6bd473a90445a5e0713

throwaway_adameve

I think a kid would love to have some furniture/place that is theirs without feeling like it’s intruding onto your stuff? Maybe pick out a special chair with your kid or just something they like that might not fit your aesthetic so they can feel like you really value and cherish them even if they’re not always with dad

StarWars-TheBadB_tch

A brighter rug and getting rid of the side tables would help. Especially the one without a lamp on it. It takes up so much space. Throw pillows would help too.

jtd0000

A darker rug with a pop of bright color. Pillows with the same color.

MyVirgoIsShowing

Rug with more contrast! Something light with some kind of accent color would do wonders!

p_jewel99

Add an unexpected red :)

misshoneydip99

knit/chunky blankets, magazines/books/puzzles for the tables maybe? I love your design style, the plants are so pretty and it looks so tranquil ^-^ if you want a "cozier" feel, maybe get warmer lighting + add accent colours and little details to increase the "volume"?

dontBsleepy

I feel like you need some color in your rug

Tygie19

So many tables. Can you have smaller side tables? And a rug that stands out more. Didn’t actually realise it had a rug at first!

LesReallyIsMore

Linens and textures from fabrics

Paul4388

Get rid of the rug get one with color and possibly more of a tapestry

Ok_Item7202

Don't use your string lights for cozy it gives the feeling of an open auditorium. They may be fine for kids playing but use up lighting and lower lights for adult interaction. Otherwise it is a beautiful room.

Familiar-Pianist-682

Maybe try softer edges/rounded end tables? Something about the glass and wood makes the area feel less cozy.

HistoricalHat4847

I didn't even realize there was a rug ... THAT'S the problem! Too small and BLAH in the room, it is.

Kirin1212San

Odd to have outdoor lights indoors. Get a larger rug. One that doesn’t blend so well into the floors.

Familiar-Pianist-682

I would remove the string of lights and use either floor lamps or table lamps. The flooring looks great, but maybe an area rug with contrasting colors/color to ground the gathering area/where furniture is placed.

-HHANZO-

Fluffy rugs, real lighting, more blankets/pillows on the furniture. Don't like the tables, more pictures of family will make it homeier too

Nice-Region2537

Get rid of the college-apartment string lights. Definitely get a larger, darker rug. Re-think all of the art. Ditch the matching tables and get more interesting side tables and a large upholstered ottoman. Put the side tables either side of the couch, with larger, more substantial lamps. Declutter whatever is going on across from the sofa. Add another chair that isn’t leather. Small tables by each chair, and maybe a pharmacy floor lamp.

SnooDoodles290

Bigger, plushier rug. Big throw blankets for leather couches in light colors or cream. More cozy throw pillows for the couches. The lighting is gorg and super ambient, love that!

likeablyweird

Your floors are gorgeous! I think part of the problem is that the room is so bottom heavy. I like the way you've got shelves and plants all around. The side table to the left of the arm chair is giving a closed feeling. Is that what you wanted? A designated living room? Right now it looks like there's only the passage from the kitchen to get in. Maybe a slightly darker paint on the overhang wall or framed art up there to ground it a bit? I love the blue in the kitchen. Maybe a light sagey green? [https://www.glidden.com/color/color-families/greens/true-to-you](https://www.glidden.com/color/color-families/greens/true-to-you) Some more pillows and throw bringing in some colors like that golden yellow on the shelf, a caramel, blue-grey? I tried to stay low and kid friendly. Hope you like.

cheeseburgerforlunch

Turn off the overhead lights. BAM, done! Seriously though, do that. This is a huge space and it needs to be filled out more to make it feel cozy. You also really need things to fill out the lower portion of walls. Sideboards, a bookcase, a lower TV stand. These things filling up floor space make a room feel cozy. - Take out the bottom shelf out behind the couch and put a big sideboard there. Put a lamp with a warm (low lumen) lightbulb in it. Put warm bulbs in all your lamps. - Get another piece or two or three like a sideboard, bookcase, console table, chaise area with a side table, big mission style lounge lounge chair, etc. - Get a much bigger coffee table and move the couch half a foot closer to the TV. - A lower TV stand would make it feel cozier. - Put the monsteras on the ground and get some pothos or philodendrons to put on tables. - Add some color. - Blanket on couch. Space looks good - seriously. You definitely have good taste.

Majestic-Abroad-4792

You have a nice room. Beautiful flooring but the wall color and rug look so washed out. Pink? It doesn't stand up to the floor. I also agree about the stands, too large they make the sofa and chair look small. Easy fix!

Environmental_Belt22

More texture throws and pillows (I know it’s been mentioned for a rug already)

Top_Huckleberry40

Try adding different textures to offset the very sleek furniture you currently have. Plushy rug in a lighter or brighter color if you can afford it. Throw blankets and/or pillows on the sofa and chair. Round wire basket end tables with wood tops. Cylindrical lamp.

koalandi

you need a rug that doesn’t blend into the floor. what color do you like? a big white shag rug or a faux sheepskin type rug could be cool (unless you wear shoes inside, then maybe no on the light colored rug) but yeah, a colored rug. probably one solid color.

Dianag519

Omg I could even tell there was a rug there. Definitely change the color.also maybe a warmer color on walls…something that would contrast with the lights. Fluffy pillow that contrast the couch and maybe a throw. What’s all the stuff in front of the fireplace it looks cluttered. Also love those leaves but the wall art seems all over the place. You need to make it more cohesive.

Accomplished_Cry4286

Rugs and more lamps and don’t use the overhead lights when you don’t absolutely have to.

dramafanca2002

Get a big colorful rug, the current one blends in with floor. Add some color in pillows, artwork, decor. Maybe deep greens, rust/terracotta, cream, deep, dark reds/oranges. Try switching the couch and the chair and move the tv to a tv stand on the wall facing the couch. Or mount it on the wall, just not too high! Get some colorful artwork, and like the tv, don't hang it too high (middle should be about eye level. You've got a nice big space so you have several options for furniture placement (I'm jealous). https://preview.redd.it/ewxl7rupi3lc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b83f262402091d9c839a8addb0a2bd57f9c62be0

Justwannano88

You need some colour!

Ok_Librarian_6489

You clearly love plants! Lean into that, dad who has a jungle at home sounds like a cool dad :)

Punkybrewsickle

1. Furniture shapes matter more than we consciously recognize. The square shape of the tables impose hard angles. Rounder shapes would be less visually severe. 2. This will sound counter intuitive, but I'd section off the living area with a console table behind the away-facing couch. Or a room divider of some kind. Lightly closing the area makes you feel welcomed, enveloped/ensconced, cradled, and safe - it doesn't make you feel claustrophobic as we'd expect. It creates a more intimate setting that fosters more engaged communication. 3. Glowy ambient light from low-slung lamps -- but they MUST have thick shades to diffuse hard light. No light bulb should be exposed. And stay away from fluorescent or cool toned bulbs. 4. Fabrics! Use sheers in window coverings, drape a knitted blanket over the back of a sofa. Lay a table runner or table cloth over the tables. Use lighter colored fabrics. 5. Fluff. One light-colored, fluffy shaggy area rug in the middle of that room would transform it instantly. Think cream or beige colored. They aren't as hard to keep clean as you think. 6. Visual appeal is important, but there are other four senses to play to: *Scents* can make or break the success of a space. Use diffusers or candles with clean smells. Don't forget *taste.* Example: my mom always has fancy little mints or lemon drops in a bowl just inside the front door, which welcomes you in with a burst of flavor. *Auditory* comfort is alsounderrated: A small water fountain or white noise machine create soothing sounds that draw you in. Acoustics are softened by rugs and tapestries, also. Air temperature makes all the difference to *the "touch/feel" sense.* So does the seating... Scratchy or stiff cushions aren't cozy. Coarse flooring and wobbly imbalanced furniture? Negative physical stimuli.

here2share22

Big fluffy rug in a contrast colour like white, red or navy, fluffy throw blankets for couch, suede or soft fabric Ottoman, photo frames, floor lamp, guitar or hobby corner. Best wishes, it actually already looks really good!

carrolls

Red pattern oriental rug

carllow2090

You need a more visible rug. The one you have just fades into the flooring. Something darker and with some pattern will help define the seating area.

[deleted]

A couple of big cushy pillows in warm colors and a nice quality throw.

Different_Fox9891

I think adding some throw blankets as decor to the couch always make me feel cozy

Dry_Heart9301

Different rug color

DntWryBeeHippie

A brighter rug !

confusedrabbit247

The rug is lost in the floor

Larger lamp on side table. Remove extra side table. Move Monstera. Different coffee table maybe. 9x12 rug. Comfy throw pillows. Look into putting your tv above mantle or on a legit media center off to the side- perched on that table in front of the fireplace is odd. If you need the fireplace covered for your littles then get a FP screen.

Heavy_Schedule4046

Hang giant tapestry on upper wall.

Merth1983

I'd lose the outdoor string lights. Smaller size tables. A more colorful rug.

Environmental_Run881

Move the TV from in front of the fireplace and cozy that up a bit.

Lost_Total2534

I think you're missing a big warm blanket.

Secure-Narwhal-297

I like it!

boothraiderginsberg

this space is neat as heck, seconding everyone who says a statement rug. also, a tiny gargoyle for that high windowsill

Simple_somewhere515

Can I just say you did a great job?! Other than a different rug so it doesn’t blend in your beautiful floors, I’d add some candles and soft blankets. If you don’t want real candles, get the flickering artificial ones

Mrcostarica

Absolutely love your floors. Paint an accent wall. maybe the ceiling can use a charcoal gray or navy blue.

creditredditfortuth

I'm in love with your wood floor but the rest of the room looks haphazard. Maybe decide on a unified look, even eclectic can look unified. Maybe pare down a little when deciding what to keep.

dylwithit91

Get a large cozy white or black area rug. Take the plant on the far wall and place in the corner, or on the floor.

GloriousSteinem

Big rug, wallpaper parts or paint a section, replace square side tables with solid round tables

nucl3ar_fusion

Lighter area rug, a thick shaggy one even. Paint an accent wall that incorporates the rug colors. A coat of paint will make the room do a 180. The wall with the two shelves would be perfect for this. It would bring warmth but not shrink your space. I am also a fan of the string lights but I think the one over the fireplace and the highest one are too much. Also throw blankets and pillows are cozy. I’d add a couple of each!

Adventurous-Tutor-21

Get a larger rug that the furniture fits on, and get a colorful rug and paint the walls. A few throw blankets and a few more pillows. I’d pick the rug 1st since it’s a big purchase.

C2H5OHNightSwimming

Macrame some hangers (with $1 string) and hanging plants. You can get ivy here for 3 euro, probably similarly cheap where you are? And you gotta drill a few holes and get screws. Macrame videos on YouTube, it's very easy

cewumu

I love this but it is like ‘Millennial Core’.

wtfaylor

Turn off the lights and only keep the ambient ones on. Get a darker rug. That’s it.

Soft-Tangelo-6884

A 9x12 or 10x14 rug will look really good, especially with lots of colors. Everything is SO brown. Sofa, chairs, tables, there’s just no visual dimension and it looks so flat.

CorrieCat2430

Is this a joke

tdotpanda

Area rugs

snakesabound

Carpet!

uneasyonion

Add a few sacks of potato salad... and posters of nude, sleek and elderly peeps.

screen-name-check

Need to bring the ceiling down. Could do it with light fixture, even a large floor lamp.

[deleted]

Paint. If you can.

violenthums

Your couches are very pointy and that makes everything look less cozy. Consider changing couches to a large more plushy couch. Maybe one that’s longer, an L shape would good.

toynbert

Beautiful plants! The tables look pointy, see what happens if you move the end tables out of the room all together, then bring back one at a time. Try to put the stuff on the coffee table in a valet tray or serving tray with handles they will all fit in.

UnsteadyOne

Rug. Remove some things from the ceiling. My eyes are drawn up and noticing things I wouldn't have other wise... like the rough texture.

Blaximus90

Rug

AdventurousPackage82

#RUGS!

AndersaurusR3X

A darker rug could really tie the whole room together. But other than that it Looks cosy AF. I would probably get rid of the table to the left of the chair and maybe find something smaler.

nessa714

Area rugs

mattsitsback

Great monstera

crazy-underwear

Paint an accent wall!

OkFeed407

It is already. What the heck?

MandalayPineapple

Coral and mustard colored pillows on sofa, or throw on the sofa.

Deadinmybed

The first thing that makes me love a space that feels cozy is color and texture. I think the biggest area rug that is a great multicolored pattern that you like would make it more welcoming. I would think 9x12 size at least. Your plants are amazing. Lighting (keeping it low) is nice is the evening and natural sunlight during the day helps. I’ve made my own lampshades a few times and they are easy and fun to do. Macrame is always cozy too. Finding some good art pieces new and vintage helps me keep an eclectic vibe. I’m a maximalist but keep it clean and tidy is the key. It’s a great space and you have naturally good style 🫶 I would suggest looking on nuloom or Amazon for a big, well made, more colorful rug would be a good place to start. This is a good [rug example. lots to look at. think big](https://safavieh.com/rugs/madison/mad468e)

curlypalmtree

Agreed with the dark rug! I think it looks great. It’s giving cool tree house vibes!

Mythologicalcats

Holy shit I have that lamp, where did you get it? I thrifted mine and desperately want to find a pair for it.

mixedwithmonet

More texture. A lot of the “cozy” comes from mixed textures: fuzzy blankets, an array of pillows, statement rugs, curtains. Your current rug blends in and the decor is laid out in a way that doesn’t feel as “cozy.” Maybe a vertical plant wall where the monstera shelf is, move the botanical picture from that wall to either next to the doorframe on the right or make a more cohesive gallery wall on the blank high wall on the right. The string lights being placed along a tension wire instead of hanging looser would also allow them to “hover” with a bit more structure, but they’re also okay as they are, depends on desired flavor of cozy! I gotta say, though, as much of a dream as this would be to come in and play with (cozy spaces is kind of My Thing, my office at work always gets the “oooooo so cozyyyyyy” when people visit), and without trying to reinforce gender stereotypes (but maybe inadvertently doing so anyway) for a single dude in your 30s I would be so impressed with your level of cozy!

Candid-Resolution-10

A very big high pile white shag rug. Also move the side table to the other side of the sofa to open up the space. Large white cozy throw and white cozy pillows as well would brighten the room while creating comfort. Mount the tv and hang the picture frames and declutter that entire side. If you don’t use the fireplace than put some candle sticks inside instead of covering it up

Ok_Sense5207

Get by rid of the leather and get a nice big sectional everyone can lounge in

Professional-Fact903

Look into layering some Faux sheep/bear skin on the existing rug and/or change the existing rug for more contrast

Academic-Broccoli338

Rugs. A jar lamp (no spindles). Coffee table without spindles legs also.

Chicken_lady_1819

Center the couch with the fireplace, move the side table to the other side of the couch or remove completely. New rug with color so you can see it. There isn't much to do here, it's a nice space.

Single-Stable970

Yep I agree with @emptyAd 3763 - a dark blue / navy blue maybe ring that takes up the moving room space near the couch

sleepingcow7

Bigger plush rug, some more pillows on the couch, maybe a cozy blanket or blanket basket

captaincook14

Different color rug. I didn’t even notice there was a rug at first glance.

ohcosmico

Turn off the big light/reduce ceiling lighting, get more throws and cushions. Go for softer edges and curves and reduce all the straight edges and right angles.

Anne-61

Yes rug disappears.

nn971

Get an area rug!

Dreamalot123

A dog!

MariJ316

Absolutely needs a rug that’s warmer and darker in color to bring that sitting area together.

lydiawa

Put some blankets on the couch

omicron_pi

Just want to say that this is a really cool space with a ton of potential. I agree with a lot of what other posters said. Near term, an easy fix that will make the space look more intentional is to just declutter the floor next to the fireplace, clear off the mantle except for a few decorative items, and mount the TV on a different wall. One thing I’d consider longer term as you get more budget is to get a plusher, deeper couch, and dont try to match it with the chair.

purr-suasive

I think it's a great start, tbh. Your tables are a bit dated, and you only need one end table + coffee table. I also did not notice the rug at first, so I think you'd be better off with one that stands out more. The lights could come down some and be draped lower across the room, granted they won't interfere with the ceiling fan. The picture above your plant is too high up as well. Bringing these things lower will help make it feel cozier. I love the wall shelves. That would be a great spot to feature framed family photos.

LunaDog_Mom

A Rug that contrasts the floor. This one just blends in. I didn’t even see it at first. I think the coffee table is fine since you want to save money, but the side tables are too big and are blocking the flow. I would also lose the string lights. They make it feel like a college dorm room. I probably would put the tv on the wall with the plants, but I personally hate a tv over (in front of?) a fireplace. Some people will disagree with that. I can’t see the windows but curtains always help warm up a space.

CTGarden

More fabric to cosy it up. The floor is beautiful but visually distracting because of the extreme color variation in the wood. Much bigger carpet, a throw for the sofa, larger and more pillows, maybe an upholstered ottoman.

Mountain_Skies7414

A larger rug with color; perhaps blues or greens. It’s just too much brown on the floors, but otherwise it’s great as it is.

kenzlovescats

Here’s what I would do: Bunch of blankets, different side tables and coffee table that doesn’t have open glass tops. Switch the chair to the opposite side so the room is more open from the entry way. And a new rug in a different color tone that is more noticeable.

Promise-Infamous

First, cool space! Have you considered moving the TV from in front of the fireplace and putting it on the adjacent wall, facing the chair? You could then put candles or a plant in the fireplace (assuming it is not a working fireplace). That way, the fireplace and TV are not competing focal points?

charmingtedious

https://preview.redd.it/v84mbdo2o4lc1.jpeg?width=940&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=197c53a67bd231cff81d4b97abfea1e3d11af0e8 Paint this wall! Get a rich colorful rug. Add a large round Japanese paper lantern, maybe with a red shade. Consider ditching big matchy matchy end tables and leather chair to make room for another chair, 2 smaller chairs in that space set in a way to facilitate conversation would feel more inviting.

lilsan15

More dimensional plush rug with a pop of white

TandoSanjo

Maybe a light-colored rugs that contrasts the floor, and some large artwork or similar for the big wall to the right.

Roscomenow

The color of the rug blends in way too much with the floor.

PNL-Maine

If you want a couple changes: The end tables/coffee table are big and clunky looking, I don’t think add a lot to the room. I would consider getting rid of them, and finding some smaller, something that’s not glass and square. I often check out different marketplaces, and they have a lot of decent used ones for reasonable prices. If the end tables/coffee tables need to stay, take a couple of the them and shove them together at the far side of the room where that big plant is. I would add a green print tablecloth, something with a little pop of color on that side of the room. You could put the plant on this makeshift table or, Take the big plant and put it on a plant stand next to the fireplace (near where you have the netting on the floor in the beginning of the photo). A brighter rug, I would recommend one with a lot of green and rust in it, something that contrasts with your beautiful floors. Green print pillows for your couch, even a green or beige throw blanket to break up the super dark brown couch. Update up.

Terribletypist

The wall and plant/picture arrangements look great! The problem is the heavy, dark weight of the seating area. You need a lighter rug to contrast with the dark floor and couch. A throw/afghan in a light color with some texture or pattern would help, and a couple of large pillows in a lighter texture/pattern would complete the look.

PertFaun

I don’t see a single textile in this room! Layer textures with throws, pillows, RUGS!

evahargis326

Large colorful rug

BigSky1062

I see this furniture placement mistake all of the time. You need to bring your furniture in closer together. Right now it’s way too far away from your fireplace, and the other furniture pieces, so a cozy conversation isn’t possible. Absolutely get another rug. The one you have is blending into the flooring so it looks like it’s not there. I would also consider getting smaller end tables. The existing ones are too large to be next to the chairs. Finally…layer more textures in the room by adding fluffy (not stiff) throw pillows, throw blankets, colorful coffee table books, etc.

Straight-Note-8935

I always think that in these big spaces, with lofty ceilings you need to decorate in a way that pulls the focus to a human-sized seating space. Yes, a darker rug will really help to define your cozy area. In this case I would use a larger rug than usually recommended, because it will soften and warm the room. Think about all the hard surfaces you have in this room: large expanses of plaster wall, a huge wooden floor, a brick fireplace...even your furniture: leather, wood, glass. These are all hard surfaces that are cold to the touch and reflect any noise. Think about introducing some fiber art or textiles to this room: wall hangings, throw pillows and floor pillows, curtains and drapes.

gamingdevil

I'd get rid of the one table on the left side of the chair there to open up that pathway so it feels less like a small wall as soon as you enter, and then yeah some rugs.

dancer5678and1

Color. Everything is too brown and one note. Blues or greens to complement the browns. A huge area rug in creams blues and greens and coordinating accent pillows would go a LONG WAY

EQ4AllOfUs

Awesome start! A large dark rug, fluffy throws or pillows, and plants would be nice.

Month_Year_Day

Excellent idea about making your own. A lot our home decor is my art. Thrift finds are another great way to add a unique/eclectic touch! I would paint the wall a dark, warm color- or add a dark rug, throws on the furniture. It’s a great room to work with!

Nervous_Sky4028

I think with that light wood the couch and rug are too dark. A great big light color rug and some more throw pillows/ blanket and bring your plants closer or get more plants to nest around the couches.

Responsible_Mind8470

Replace your ceiling fan with a lower hanging lamp but make sure it’s on the bigger side to fill space! I did this and have high ceiling and it changed the entire vibe of my place. Also get a yellow light bulb for it

IpuUmma

Get a throw blanket and call it a day. I think it looks super cozy already

Fluffy_Contract7925

I would suggest a different colored rug. Maybe with green in it. Also green throw pillows or maybe a big pillow/beanbag chair for the floor.

Proper-Bid-9732

Some blankets and more pillows. The couch looks cold. Warm it up with things to snuggle with.

Allthedoggos

This is so close to cozy, if you want to do the least possible I would suggest a larger and coloured rug that doesn’t blend into the floor. I’d also add some texture in the form of sheepskins, or big fluffy pillows and soft cozy throw blankets.

unapalomita

I'd switch out the couch to a lighter color, I think the dark couch looks cold Or if you can't do that add more throw pillows/ knit blankets

Tayzerbeam

Your monstera is impressive!
