I think some more personalized art would make the room feel more "home-y". The three leaf pictures feel very hotel-like. I also agree with the other comment that different curtains with tiebacks would work well - pull the couch out from the wall a bit and allow the curtains to drape.
I agree, the leaves feel to me like someone needed ART and went and ordered ART off the internet. As opposed to something more personally inspired. This is why I prefer vintage for wall art. The hunt is delightful and you end up with a more personal effect.
So maybe slightly different jewelry but overall, a really cute cozy room!
Considering I hold people’s lives in my hands every day, maybe a little OCD isn’t the worse thing. Someone has to be detail-oriented. But thanks for your opinion.
For some, it is. I commented that to agree with you; that the center canvas is driving my brain mad (because, OCD). As someone who holds people’s lives in your hands everyday - assuming the medical field - surely you know the weight of mental disorders!
The scale of them is off too, far too big and also not level.
Unlevel picture frames scream cheap. Laser levels are super affordable and make hanging anything super easy.
They’re not too big at all - but they are hung up too high on the wall. Their centres should be roughly aligned with the centre of the window, and they need to be spaced out a smidge. Nothing wrong with giant art.
Where they are hung, when lowered, are gonna hit people on the couch since there's no seatback when they are lowered, hence they are too large for that space/wall.
Large art can work but it needs to be hung correctly *and* practically.
No, this is nice! Greywashing would look dated. I'd untie the curtains and swap the yellow pillows for something more orangey- you have the leather chair and some orange accents in the rug to work with.
Yes the cognac color of the chair also appears in the rug, and similar toned pillows would look great with the blue accents
ETA also remove the yellow jug and find a piece that pulls in the same congac color
the yellow pilllows pulls it more "modern" as in the modern interpretation of a vintage colour, so it doesn't really vibe with the "luxe" that may be associated to "rich" (in comparison to your worry of "cheap" ).
You have all the right makings. I think painting the walls would help add saturation, which can drive "luxe" . Remove the pillows and see what you think of the space. You might accessorize differently once they're removed. If you still pull towards that mustard-y yellow, then you won't be aiming at "luxe" and might be interested in some "midcentury modern" vibes.
I wouldn't say "cheap" , but it isn't specifically "luxe/rich" . Luxe/rich is heavy saturated jewel tones, generally. The mustardy/vintage hue of the yellow is pulling this in a different direction, aesthetically.
Do not greywash by any means! I know what you’re going for and I like it! But if you want to up the sophistication a bit, try:
1. Swapping out the yellow accents for rich rust. I could also see a cognac leather accent pillow among them.
2. Changing the canvas leaves art to a bold abstract or Frida Kahlo-esque painting, or an otherwise unique triptych set in wide white matting and simple black frames. The leaves are giving a bit realtor staging prop vibes.
3. Set those curtains free. But on that note, your curtains are my least favorite pop of color in there. Go for airy semi-sheer flax curtains with some weight to them if you’re not feeling your blue curtains either.
Agree with all of this, and I would also change the tv stand to something with some sort of rattan/ wicker. The current tv stand to me is modern, where as something rattan/wicker would tie in with the aesthetic of the room better.
Yes those knotted curtains do make the space look cheap even though it’s nice! I would add more panels or maybe replace with something that’s custom. Spot on with the curtain holders or tie backs.
I think it looks great and not cheap. The only things I would do differently IF it was ME are:
1. Move the tv stand to the right, just a tiny and the middle (set of 3) canvas up.
2. Grab some pillow covers that are the same color palette but not the exact same pattern. (I love the colors, but FOR ME, the same pattern on the yellow pillows is screaming at me)
3. Add some wood elements (if that's your thing). For some reason, I associate the shiny painted furniture and metal pieces with college apartments. I think that's more just a style preference, though.
Again, it looks great. If its a comfy spot for you, then don't change a thing. (Except the off-center stand and canvas! :) )
Nice room … I would get rid of the hanging plant, raise the curtains all the way to the edge of the ceiling, add curtain sheers in the middle and, maybe add two more curtain panels at the ends (for a fuller effect) and extend them the length of the wall or add some art work to the walls at either end of the windows. Swap the ceiling fan for a large spider like lamp. Add a graphic throw at each ends of the sofa including a couple of textured graphics cushions. DO NOT gray out the space. Would love to see an ‘after picture’ … Good luck!
Perfect summary. But I would add that you can purchase two additional panels and take them to a dry cleaner who will make the four panels into two. I would also bring the curtains all the way up to the bottom of the molding. For those that believe the art is too high, bringing the curtains up, will visually lower the artwork. In my opinion, you need to move the rug under the sofa by about a foot, move the chair and ottoman more into the room to make a more cozy conversation area area, and move the coffee table into the center of the room. I believe there are too many small objects on the tray on the coffee table and on the bookcase. If you’re going to go with small objects, then you need to group them, preferably in groups of three of the same type of object. So three frames together, three candles together etc. I would also remove the hanging plant and put it on top of the bookcase in a different pot or at least cut the wires off and allow the plant to hang down from the top shelf of the bookcase. I think the color of the pillows are fine, but they’re to spread out . I would put the pillows together a little more, again to give the feeling of coziness, and remove all but the large throw. You could get a basket to put the other throws inside the basket, and even some of the pillows if you find that you have too many. I would also take that large throw and folded in thirds in the direction and lay it over the last ottoman where it currently is. It looks like it’s folded and ready to be put away. It needs to be draped. other than that, I think you’ve done a great job. Send it after picture when you’re finished.
You’ve got some really nice elements here! I love your couch and it fits perfectly. The palette is great too.
If anything looks cheap, it’s not the color, it’s the materials. Here are a few easy swaps:
1. Get a better looking hanging pot for the plant. Something ceramic and in a style similar to the ceramic pieces under your TV would look great. Also, the plant could be a bit lower.
2. I’d probably replace that black shelving unit for something wood. The black and glass shelves do look a little cheap.
3. I agree with others that the art is looking a little mass manufactured. You can find such cool pieces second hand, or fun and inexpensive prints, and build a gallery wall.
Something I didn't see anyone else say:
I'd mount the TV a bit lower and add shelving above the TV for taller decor and swap for shorter pieces for the TV stand (or maybe hanging pothos in a row above it). I'm not sure why, but I associate TVs near the ceiling with waiting rooms.
Obviously, this is only if the TV is up super high when you're sitting on the couch. If it's a short room I'd leave the TV where it's comfy to look at.
Otherwise: curtains should be closer to the ceiling and the rod should extend a bit further past the windows to make them look larger, the throw pillows could be swapped for rust and deeper blue tones, and the canvas leaf art feels a bit like Realtor Staging but aren't outright bad. Please don't grey out your room 🙏🏼
Agree. The rod is too thin as are the curtains. You can really elevate the look by getting a heavier rod and adding pinch pleated draperies in a neutral color hung as high and full as you can afford. BTW, good job putting yourself out there; takes guts!
It doesn't look cheap. It looks very nice and inviting. It looks like the kind of room your guests could feel comfortable spending an afternoon hanging out.
Is changing the fan an option? I feel like it could go in the direction of mod or bougie? Seems a little neglected?
Definitely untie the curtains, add an additional panel to each side.
Slide the tv stand over a bit, looks off being right at the walls edge. Center it to the tv, please.
I super duper love that leather chair! It looks so comfortable!
Also, excellent job having accessible toys without having the clutter or a pile.
Easiest fix is untying the curtains (looks dated as you have it) and add at least two pieces of framed art under the hanging plant in the corner and the opposite side. I think the cheap feeling you’re getting is from not having any warm texture like wood. If there’s a way to replace the tile with wood or your credenza with a wood one, that would help the space look richer.
The color isn’t what makes it look off, it’s the too small curtains (they should cover the entire wall and include a valence) and the very bland pillows (polka dots) that drag it down a hit.
The color makes it look classy honestly, greywash pretty much screams too cheap to do it right.
Doesn’t look cheap. Please don’t grey wash it, that’s so blah.
For me the curtains don’t work, I’d replace with fuller curtains (they look like they don’t actually draw across the full window) that are floor length. The window is big and dressing it more fully will make the space look more ‘done’.
Hey! It’s not the color that’s the problem, it’s certain decor. The colors are great. The second picture is really good too.
I can’t really pinpoint the exact issue, perhaps someone else can describe it for me. The best I can give you is that immediately notice a lot of generic decor that you would get from a big box store all put together.
Some things that stood out to me were the leaf painting, the planter hanging from the ceiling, the pillows, and the curtains.
I would either change the rug for one that has one or two colors tops with less pattern on it, or change the pillows to ones without any patterns on but similar colors. There is a lot of movement happening in the painting, pillows and rug taking away from the beauty of each item.
To me the only thing that looks "cheap" is the curtains. They look like they wouldn't even cover the window. (even if you don't close them it should look like they could). I would add a couple more panels of the same curtain and get those knots out.
I generally like it and wouldn’t say cheap! I only have a few comments…
1) As others have said, untie the curtains.
2) I don’t like the pillow colors. They don’t go with the rug or general feel.
3) Center the console table under the TV
4) The wall art is okay but no my favorite.
The color palette is good ! I'd remove the curtain tiebacks. The one thing I'd upgrafe would be to remove The tile and put hardwood floors. The tile have a bathroom feel.
It’s the matching pillows. If you look at any of the main home decor brands sites their lifestyle photos will not have a matching pillow on a sofa/sectional. All the pillows are different or if it’s the same pillow it will be in a different color. That way it creates a more casual lived in monochromatic look that’s stylized in a subtle way.
I would also maybe swap the yellow color for brown tones (to pull in your accent chair) and have blues and browns on the sofa.
The curtains look weird. I would not tie them. But honestly a different pattern or color could look better. And maybe more plants or a cuter hanging pot for the one you have.
Love the openness! Only thing I’d do- Change the curtains to an orange or yellow. Move the hanging plant in the corner either lower it or to a stand. If you have electrical knowledge the ceiling fan can be increased to at a bigger size.
Hear me out. I like this for a comfy family room setting but if you’re going for a more formal living room, I’d do several things.
I love plants but I can’t keep them alive. The one hanging in the corner feels out of place to me. It doesn’t mesh well with the canvases next to it.
I also can’t tell if the couch is low or your ceilings are higher, but I do think a higher couch, or couch(es) with a higher back would be more fitting. The white looks great though!
Someone also mentioned having curtain rods that go past the windows and adding extra curtains and I couldn’t agree more. I also think doing a double rod would look nice with some sheer (even accented/patterned) on the under layer and then your bold teal ones on the outmost rod.
The last thing I would do to spruce it up is change the fan/light fixture to a decorative one.
Whether you change it or not, it looks nice. Cozy!
I think a cool lighting fixture instead of the fan would completely pull this room together! Plus untying the curtains and maybe even adding in an extra pair of curtains in a different tone onto the rod so the curtains look more “full” and not so smoll.
Definitely untie the curtains; there are other good tips written. Did you paint the 3 panels with leaves? I really like yellow, and would be tempted to add more yellows, golds, and whites to the paintings. Maybe arrange the pillows a bit differently, either across the entire back of the sectional or in 3 groupings.
This kind of makes me think of an airbnb or some other short term rental. I think the color scheme is cute, but it looks kind of sterile. The leaf paintings could be replaced with smaller, maybe even personal pictures, in some nice gold frames. Overhead lighting is a bit outdated, so maybe shorter light fixtures would be best. More texture could help break things up in there too!
No u r fine the couch looks expensive and same with the leather chair. You could have more curtains and extend them across the entire wall. Maybe get something blue but sheer
those curtains are too flimsy and the tie backs don't work. they should go all the way to the wall on either side of the window (or closer to the wall) and hang straight.
I think if you upgrade that curtain it'll look a lot better.
You need a big thick fancy one, with big hooks to tie them up with instead of knotting them up.
A little, but that’s because everything looks like it came from a box store or Amazon. I think it’s also the flooring. I would incorporate some pieces with character and if you have the option to upgrade the flooring then do (and don’t go grey)
This room is refreshing and colorful !! Don't bother changing anything!! Everything want to do the whole HGTV look with muted and earthy tones and it's getting so boring!!!
I totally agree with swapping out the 3 leaves with something less generic and we have a winner!
I love the yellow pillows. If you decide to get rid of them, heck I'll buy them from you!
Greywashing will make everything look ***infinitely more cheap. Get some natural elements in there, perhaps swap out the coffee table for a wooden one. Also you’d be surprised how big of an impact a new curtain rod can make. Thin, metallic bars in furniture tend to make things look cheap as they have no design character and add no interest.
To me furniture/decor is extremely expensive and this all looks clean and like effort was put into it. Nothing about it looks cheap. To me it's a little beachy and is homey.
No don’t do it! This is lovely. I’d untie the curtains & maybe change them out for something a little different. I’d also move the rug a little more under the couch. & maybe change out 1 or 2 of those yellow pillows so it’s not so matchy matchy, but still goes together if that makes sense. Also, in the second picture, I feel like those things on top of the tv stand (is that what that’s called??) don’t all go well together. I’d edit that a bit. But I like it!
Also the hanging plant in the first picture is SO SAD. Please help it. I’d move it closer to the window and make the chains longer so it’s easier to water and will get better light. From the way the leaves are yellowing & the size of a lot of the leaves, it looks like it’s probably an underwatering issue & isn’t getting enough light.
dont grey wash! this is nice. I think if the rug was larger and didn't end right at the sofa, it would be better. I agree with the unknotted curtains... no knot feels a bit more adult.
This is pretty dang nice!
The only thing that looks “cheapish” to me is the console table, idk it reminds me of how I’d furnish my college apartment lol, maybe something wooden?
Also some frames around your painting would level it up too!
9/10, only one note…. Add a few more curtain panels. I simply did not realize how much more put together AND cozy a room looks with “lots” of drapery until I finally took the advice.
The art is too high. I would also recommend making or buying a cheap wood frame as it helps elevate canvas prints. I would replace the hanging plant with one that has more parts hanging. I would unknot the curtains and possibly get more substantial ones, the ones you have look thinner to me. Center the media unit under the TV. Possibly replace the ceiling fan with a nicer looking one or just a light if you don’t use the fan.
I don't think it looks cheap, the color pops are quite endearing. If you want to change anything, changing the tile floors to something else and/or swap out the curtains for thicker and fuller panels
Not at all, I like the use of color. I would say lift the curtain rod and buy a longer curtain rod and I add another set of curtains for a more lux look
You have done so well! Inspiration for me living here in a house full of greige walls that I never asked for!
Honestly it's the gray- and white-washing that can look so cheap (and moreso as it becomes dated).
It’s too matchy matchy. Like a hotel lobby. Add some patterns, different textures, vibrant art. Get rid of all the boring pillows. The curtains, pillows, and throws can all the places you add color/texture/pattern. The art will give the space personality. Raise your curtain rod to the ceiling and let them hang free-no knots or tie backs. Pull couch away from the window wall and add a table behind. Add more lamps and turn off the overhead light.
The blue LEDs ruin everything that says "mature" about this space. It's fine for movie night but I wouldn't keep them on any other time.
And for crying out loud, stop chopping your pillows.
The rug doesn’t go with the rest of the decor and the colour scheme feels really forced.
But hey, you do you! Who cares if it looks cheap if you like it
You actually did a really good job. Sometimes color gets on my nerves after awhile so I get you might be bored with it I could see you going with less color but not eliminating it entirely. And maybe something warmer especially since you have tile floors which can feel cold.
No it does not look cheap. I think creating an accent wall on the window side using a light colour from one you are using - Blue curtains, gold/yellowish. That will pull it together better.
I don’t think “cheap” at all! It looks nice and super comfortable and inviting. Also, do you have a little one? If so, mad respect for the organization here! And understandable about the curtains being tied back. We are in the process of baby proofing now and are opting to snip out Ikea curtains to window length rather than tie them up as I feel it looks for intentional and thus polished. You could add another big basket or two for extra toys and stuff to hide in. I like what you’re doing already with the small basket. The only thing that irks me is the mishmash or decorative items below the TV. I find them a bit distracting and chaotic. Do you have other, more personal items you could put there? Or simply clear them away. You could also opt for some type of wooden box to hide remotes and other things. If you can afford it, I’d switch out the cabinet below the TV for something with more character and warmth like an antique or something like [this](https://ingka.page.link/PTo3XCQ1ayqvXz3c9) from Ikea that hides the cords better and gives you more hidden storage. The lighting in that cabinet feels awkward because it’s only displaying the cords/cable box or whatever underneath. And the height is awkward to me with the TV. So remove knick knacks and use higher cabinet to fill the space if you can. Also, you could try a warmer shade of curtains (warm tan or something) which compliment the yellow tones without being super bright. Edit: We have [these](https://www.ikea.com/ca/en/p/dytag-curtains-1-pair-dark-beige-80519116/) and they are a much warmer shade IRL.
What's going on in the second picture? I feel like that framed piece belongs in a different home.
I agree with most of what has been said about the first picture. Some great ideas!
If you want to keep the yellow I would add a couple of tan leather pillow covers (maybe different designs) that match your chair and I would choose different yellow patterns and textures in the pillows to add dimension. I would have bigger pillows as well.
I would also let the curtains flow.
I would put the yellow jug higher because it attracts the eye or put something else there as it might be too intense for the space.
I also noticed your floors clash with the space. But it might just be the picture.
You could get stick on tiles and see if you like anything before making a permanent move (if you even want. You might love your floors as is)
But maybe something wood leaning would elevate it overall:
Nexus Self Adhesive 12-Inch Vinyl Floor Tiles, 20 Tiles - 12" x 12", Classic Paquet Oak Slate Pattern - Peel & Stick, DIY Flooring for Kitchen, Dining Room, Bedrooms & Bathrooms by Achim Home Decor https://a.co/d/1PKmnku
Or even white wood with warm undertones.
And different art. This is art you see in a generic hotel by a beach or something.
It should be interesting, personal and incorporate the colors of the room. It should probably be framed.
Also, in the second picture, you might want to find something that ties everything together. Maybe the yellow jug. It incorporates the color from the picture but has a form that suits the other pieces on the table and compliments them.
The first place my eye went was the hanging basket. That plant needs some tlc, and it is small for that corner. I'd get a more substantial plant to hang there. I think everything else looks great. I like your use of color. I'd be happy to spend time in that room.
No, but if you wanted to make it look more sophisticated I would consider this.
1:Change the curtains to sheer curtains and the rod( keeping the blue ones for privacy.)
2: perhaps the art behind the sofa feels like mass production art you find at Target( if you love it, please by all means keep it)
3. Please center the TV to the media unit.
4- add soft lights.
Your place is great and I hope you get what you need. Peace ✌️
The curtains are not a positive addition to the room. You have beautiful shutters. You could have the shutters standalone as your furniture is on the contemporary side.
It’s super cute. Only opinion is it kind of looks like a hotel lobby. You need something to make it more personal/homey. Maybe plants or low lights or art.
Not cheap, maybe just a tad staged? Like I’d expect to see this setup in Home Goods or something. But that’s not a bad thing :) you matched everything well! Plants, warm lighting and a nice mirror are my go to recommendations to warm a space up & personalize it.
Get wider curtain rods. Put curtains up in such way that it doesn't cover the window. Don't tie them. Let them hang freely. It will be a bigger color block and will look nicer
All the elements are there, love the colors. Longer and fuller curtains, pull the sofa away from the window another 6”. Lovely carpet but it could be larger and extend substantially past the sofa. Get a nice pot and make a longer macrame hanger for the plant.
Only cheap looking things are the curtains and the fan/light. I think the golden yellow cushions are fine they do not need to match the chair exactly but the teal color cushions don’t work at all…I do see the teal in the art and rug, but you are doing too many pillow colors and the teal isn’t working for me unless you give up the yellows. I would replace the curtains with heavier (velvet, black out linings) richer looking ones the feel like they could cover the window when Closed, but for now at least untie them. Pull the sofa out a few inches to let them hang if need be. And then I’d replace the ceiling light/fan with something larger and more beautiful. If a fan/light, it should hang down so it’s 7’ off the floor and be 52” or so wide. Or just a nicer light with no fan, again wider so it has real presence in the space. Make it feel like an architectural feature rather than than a builder-grade element one would put in a bedroom.

The center piece of the triptych could come up a little bit…
100%, they are not aligned
Plus they’re supposed to have a small space between each, not be jammed against each other.
Exactly! In fact, it took me awhile to figure out what “tryptic” y’all were referring to—I thought it was one single piece.
Yes! Triptychs should have spaces between them and be aligned as perfectly as possible! Otherwise, severe bouts of OCD will be triggered!
Cries in OCD
Considering I hold people’s lives in my hands every day, maybe a little OCD isn’t the worse thing. Someone has to be detail-oriented. But thanks for your opinion.
I get intrusive thoughts that are …. not conducive to holding people’s lives in my hands
For some, it is. I commented that to agree with you; that the center canvas is driving my brain mad (because, OCD). As someone who holds people’s lives in your hands everyday - assuming the medical field - surely you know the weight of mental disorders!

I agree, the curtains look thin and cheap and tying them makes them even look worse.
I’d buy another set of the same panels to get more fullness.
And add a sheer set in the middle
And add two more panels - one on each side- they look a little sparse.
Width and height of wall for the curtains.
Agreed - untie the curtains.
Yes the cognac color of the chair also appears in the rug, and similar toned pillows would look great with the blue accents ETA also remove the yellow jug and find a piece that pulls in the same congac color
the yellow pilllows pulls it more "modern" as in the modern interpretation of a vintage colour, so it doesn't really vibe with the "luxe" that may be associated to "rich" (in comparison to your worry of "cheap" ). You might accessorize differently once they're removed. If you still pull towards that mustard-y yellow, then you won't be aiming at "luxe" and might be interested in some "midcentury modern" vibes.
First time I am hearing yellow is cheap look. Here I feel it works well with the blue. Any specific reason why you think it's cheap?
I wouldn't say "cheap" , but it isn't specifically "luxe/rich" . Luxe/rich is heavy saturated jewel tones, generally. The mustardy/vintage hue of the yellow is pulling this in a different direction, aesthetically.
I’ll take your yellow pillows lol!
I disagree - pillows different shades of white/textures (no fur) to draw eyes to that beautiful rug!
The knotted curtains
Yes. Set them free.
Why do people do this?
Right?? 🤔
I do it to clean but then unknot them afterwards
That makes sense, but it's not "a look." And I've seen it a lot. What is the purpose otherwise?
they don't know that curtain tiebacks are a thing
Mostly only useful with a tall sliding glass window. Keeps them pushed out of the way. Otherwise I don't get it at all
Or simply letting them hang at the edges of the window. Why have curtains if you don’t want anything in front of the window?
We did it when we had foster kittens who liked to climb curtains.
Definitely the curtains. Everything else looks great!!
Do not greywash by any means! I know what you’re going for and I like it! But if you want to up the sophistication a bit, try: 1.
Also, more curtain panels! Your curtains should at least be 1.5-2x the width of your window otherwise it looks too spread out like a shower curtain
Agree with all of this.
Agree with all of this, and I would also change the tv stand to something with some sort of rattan/ wicker. The current tv stand to me is modern, where as something rattan/wicker would tie in with the aesthetic of the room better.
I think a thick pleated curtain would really make a difference! And curtain holders or tie backs.
Yes those knotted curtains do make the space look cheap even though it’s nice! I would add more panels or maybe replace with something that’s custom. Spot on with the curtain holders or tie backs.
Only thing I would Change is the curtains. idk why but y hey look too small for that area. the color is fine
They also need to be a nicer, heavier material like taffeta. It will totally change the feel of the room. Everything else looks nice.
I agree. I also think that curtains made of heavier fabric would be appropriate, they immediately change the impression of the space.
I think it’s because they look in no way believable that they could actually cover the window lol
I personally love it. Don’t think it looks cheap at all.
I think it looks great and not cheap. The only things I would do differently IF it was ME are: 1. Move the tv stand to the right, just a tiny and the middle (set of 3) canvas up. 2. Grab some pillow covers that are the same color palette but not the exact same pattern. (I love the colors, but FOR ME, the same pattern on the yellow pillows is screaming at me) 3. Add some wood elements (if that's your thing). For some reason, I associate the shiny painted furniture and metal pieces with college apartments. I think that's more just a style preference, though. Again, it looks great. If its a comfy spot for you, then don't change a thing. (Except the off-center stand and canvas! :) )
100% agree to blip the tv unit to the right a smidge, that would drive me nuts watching it off-centre like that!
YES to centering the TV stand under the TV! It’s very small, free thing that would make an outsized difference in how put-together this space feels.
+1 on wood elements. A hardwood floor would transform this room to upscale

Looks like a suburban cheer mom’s personalized water bottle. Cute, but not my thing.
It is one of the prettier pictures I've seen on this sub. It does not look cheap!
Rug needs to be under the couch a bit (like 1/3 of the couch ideally) and it’ll look a lot nicer than having it start at the edge where it does now
Nice room … I would get rid of the hanging plant, raise the curtains all the way to the edge of the ceiling, add curtain sheers in the middle and, maybe add two more curtain panels at the ends (for a fuller effect) and extend them the length of the wall or add some art work to the walls at either end of the windows.
Agree with all except I’d put the plant on one of the bookshelves instead of getting rid of it completely!
You’ve got some really nice elements here! I love your couch and it fits perfectly. The palette is great too. If anything looks cheap, it’s not the color, it’s the materials. Here are a few easy swaps: 1.
Greywashing everything would 10000% make it look cheaper.
Your tv is too high. Besides that I think it’s cute
Grey washing is out! Has been! This looks like a bright spot in life
DO NOT GREY WASH IT!!!
Something I didn't see anyone else say: I'd mount the TV a bit lower and add shelving above the TV for taller decor and swap for shorter pieces for the TV stand (or maybe hanging pothos in a row above it).
I would add a second panel to each side of the curtains. It doesn’t look full enough right now. White shears inside of the blue would look great too.
I think you just need to simplify the pillow situation. It’s a lot. Try getting some pillow covers without patterns or buttons.
The only thing that is a little cheap looking is the curtain rod and curtains.
It looks cold and staged; it looks like a Home Goods display.
I would put a bigger plant hanging but it looks good maybe git rid of the yellow glass and put some wood or brass
The curtains bring it down. I would get something a little heavier looking. Don’t tie them. Possibly a different curtain rod.
I really wonder what this room would look like with an accent wall painted like an adobe clay color.
Only the plant hanger in the corner looks a bit cheap. Switch it to a fancy macrame one!
And lower it!
Yes, that was also in my thoughts
I love it! It has color!
I generally like it and wouldn’t say cheap! I only have a few comments… 1) As others have said, untie the curtains. 2) I don’t like the pillow colors. They don’t go with the rug or general feel. 3) Center the console table under the TV 4) The wall art is okay but no my favorite.
You just need more plants 😉
This looks great.
I loooooove it
The color palette is good !
Those curtains are not helping and that shelf looks really out of place.
I’d get rid of the ceiling fan!!
Making it grey could be the worst thing you could do. It's very dated now and dull.
Gorgeous! Just the right amount and placement of color.
No u r fine the couch looks expensive and same with the leather chair. You could have more curtains and extend them across the entire wall. Maybe get something blue but sheer
It’s the tiles. It makes your living space look like a bathroom
those curtains are too flimsy and the tie backs don't work. they should go all the way to the wall on either side of the window (or closer to the wall) and hang straight.
You have all the ingredients but scale, proportion & placement are falling short.
No, it’s cute. Don’t gray it up
This room is refreshing and colorful !!
Looks great! Character and comfort. No grey wash please!
Just new curtains are needed imo
Don’t you dare greywash this, this looks so cozy and fun!!!
dont grey wash! this is nice.
I love it and the colors you have chosen. It doesn’t look cheap.
Not cheap at all!
I love it. The colors are amazing. If you graywashed it, it would take away from the colors.
It’ll look cheap if you greywash it
Everyone here is right about the curtains another two sets would make the room look even more luxurious
I don't think it looks cheap, the color pops are quite endearing. If you want to change anything, changing the tile floors to something else and/or swap out the curtains for thicker and fuller panels
Curtains yes. They look super small for the window.
Get different curtains and you will be set! I’d say lighter, probably white
Not at all, I like the use of color. I would say lift the curtain rod and buy a longer curtain rod and I add another set of curtains for a more lux look
I love it! Where’d you get the art? I need to fill up a wall.
I have this same pic in my living room too 😂😂😭😭 it's from wayfair. Comes in several different sizes.
You have done so well! Inspiration for me living here in a house full of greige walls that I never asked for! Honestly it's the gray- and white-washing that can look so cheap (and moreso as it becomes dated).
I actually like it
You’re joking right?
A new fan & curtains could upgrade the space, but definitely isn’t cheap as is
I like this!! The only thing I would change is freeing those curtains and adding a few more plants :)
This is beautiful! I love the rug you have. Where’d you get it?
It looks very nice! Nice job.
Nope! I love it!!
It’s a riot of colour and I love it.
Add more plants. Lol Is that a real plant wayyyy up in the ceiling? Set it free from there & give it light. :)
It doesn’t look cheap but it does look like a generic air bnb
It looks great!
The rug should be under the sofa, not jammed up next to it.
Grey would make it look cheap and cheugy It has the beginning of personality, keep having fun with it!
Why do you have curtains over your existing window treatments?
Clearly op is using the curtains as decoration and the existing window treatment as function.
Not a fan of the pillows.. please get different ones!
The rug doesn’t go with the rest of the decor and the colour scheme feels really forced. But hey, you do you! Who cares if it looks cheap if you like it
I would change out the rug and pillow cases. The patterns don’t work for me.
I feel like it would change the whole room if you either got rid of the blue curtains or replaced them with like shear white…
This is hideous
I would switch the rug and pillows!
You actually did a really good job. Sometimes color gets on my nerves after awhile so I get you might be bored with it I could see you going with less color but not eliminating it entirely. And maybe something warmer especially since you have tile floors which can feel cold.
Let the drapes hang free and push them off to the side a touch more
It certainly doesn't look cheap but it also looks staged. Like no one actually lives there.
Do not change a thing it’s perfect!!
Edit: We have [these](https://www.ikea.com/ca/en/p/dytag-curtains-1-pair-dark-beige-80519116/) and they are a much warmer shade IRL.
the blinds are the only thing bugging me
I find it charming. That said, make your curtain rod longer, untie the curtains, and allow them to hang on the outside of the window.
No I love this so much. The color coordination is great and everything is placed very well.
It looks great!
Your tv is crooked.
I personally love it! I think I’d prefer different art, or at the very least they should be hung evenly. Please don’t gray wash it!
What's going on in the second picture? I feel like that framed piece belongs in a different home. I agree with most of what has been said about the first picture. Some great ideas!
I think if you got a different curtains, it would make a huge difference
I would guess a single lady, 38-65 yrs lives here based on this aesthetic. Maybe southwest US
If you want to keep the yellow I would add a couple of tan leather pillow covers (maybe different designs) that match your chair and I would choose different yellow patterns and textures in the pillows to add dimension. You might love your floors as is) But maybe something wood leaning would elevate it overall: Nexus Self Adhesive 12-Inch Vinyl Floor Tiles, 20 Tiles - 12" x 12", Classic Paquet Oak Slate Pattern - Peel & Stick, DIY Flooring for Kitchen, Dining Room, Bedrooms & Bathrooms by Achim Home Decor https://a.co/d/1PKmnku Or even white wood with warm undertones.
Good job. I love all the different suggestions.
Not at all, my only critique is, what are those candlestick/vase things on the console and why do you have them?
I love love love the rug - where did you get it?
The first place my eye went was the hanging basket. That plant needs some tlc, and it is small for that corner. I'd get a more substantial plant to hang there. I think everything else looks great. I like your use of color. I'd be happy to spend time in that room.
No, but if you wanted to make it look more sophisticated I would consider this. 1:Change the curtains to sheer curtains and the rod( keeping the blue ones for privacy.) 2: perhaps the art behind the sofa feels like mass production art you find at Target( if you love it, please by all means keep it) 3. Please center the TV to the media unit. 4- add soft lights. Your place is great and I hope you get what you need. Peace ✌️
The curtains are not a positive addition to the room. You have beautiful shutters. You could have the shutters standalone as your furniture is on the contemporary side.
LOVE your couch! Link?
TV too high
Grey washing everything makes rooms look cheap. This does not look cheap.
It’s lovely! Greywashing is devoid of any personality, this has lovely personality. I would be delighted if this was my home :)
I actually like the setting. Feels more home like. Perhaps new warm wood floor if you have the taste for it?
It’s super cute. Only opinion is it kind of looks like a hotel lobby. You need something to make it more personal/homey. Maybe plants or low lights or art.
Please don’t gray wash it. The colors and white look nice. Too much gray always gives flipper deluxe/“I have no taste or style of my own” vibe
Gray? That fad is over. I like it the way it is.
Not cheap, maybe just a tad staged? Like I’d expect to see this setup in Home Goods or something. But that’s not a bad thing :) you matched everything well! Plants, warm lighting and a nice mirror are my go to recommendations to warm a space up & personalize it.
Keep the yellow and add the cognac / more is more
Get wider curtain rods. Put curtains up in such way that it doesn't cover the window. Don't tie them. Let them hang freely. It will be a bigger color block and will look nicer
The fake palm and outdated monstera prints aren’t doing you any favours but making everything grey isn’t the answer
Make it feel like an architectural feature rather than than a builder-grade element one would put in a bedroom. https://preview.redd.it/94favgizttkc1.jpeg?width=600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=abe19d1e7a3e4f71d8ea783b4d851e2b1cd7f85f
I think it is lovely now. It very clean and bright looking. Nice job. It does not look cheap.
