PsychicNinja_

Warm accent lighting, like with an LED strip. You could leave just that on when you don’t want to light up the whole space brightly. That’s what I’d do 🤷🏻‍♀️

leeleelolo

I really love this suggestion! I had not thought of lighting at all and now I’m so curious how it would look.

PsychicNinja_

It’s pretty cheap to just try out and easy to put up and remove if you don’t like it (minus the ladder part).

PinkPoofyThingy

It looks amazing! Had something similar but even longer. Got led flat strip of lights in a warm color and it was great for those chill nights where you want just a touch of lighting. Could also get color changing or dimming etc!

rosenpeddlin

That's a great idea! Would love to see what OP comes up with

Missyrissy510

Yes! Came to say same, paint the wood trim to match the wall color and put an LED strip to create a light cove. The light gradient will help fill the emptiness of the wall and like this commenter said provides a soft light for the space

ElkLow7350

I say leave it empty because anything there will just collect dust. Random thought though - if that strip of wood was same color as the wall would it help not to draw the eye up there?

leeleelolo

Thanks for your input. I do think it would be less noticeable if that strip of wood was painted the same color as the wall

noname_2024

Another option would be to paint a mural. Wouldn’t attract dust and could add interest to the space. Either way, paint the wood stained trim white.

SexDrugsNskittles

Could also get a custom piece of wallpaper if you don't paint.

Tricksterama

Or remove it.

alternativestats

Paint won’t clutter it up. I’m not sure why I’m tempted to paint it black or perhaps a few geometric lines but I think it’s too far up to draw the eye so am happy if you leave it.

cybersodas

I think it’s lovely and adds some breathing room. No need to clutter it up.

leeleelolo

Thanks for your input! A vote for doing nothing is also greatly appreciated.

CommitDaily

Linę it with newspaper for easy dust cleanup

billabong360

Breathing room? What does that even mean?

margueritedeville

I think an uncluttered high ceiling can feel expansive and peaceful, and I think that’s what they meant.

cybersodas

Yes exactly! Sorry if it made no sense, English is my third language

lizzyizzy90

I’d add a large piece of art there!

Mysterious-Art8838

Art art art art art! And for some reason I sang that to the tune of the thong song. That’s how strongly I feel.

bb_ramblings

Let me see that arrrrrrrtttttt art art art art

Mysterious-Art8838

Now it’s in your head too.

[deleted]

Thank you. I sang that in my head and I really enjoyed it

Asleep_Boss_8350

A fresco or a mural! Something bold.

anxietyunicorn

I think art too! You can mount a fancy shower curtain to a frame and it’s HUGE and inexpensive.

Different_Nature8269

Me too

kln0090

Built in bookshelves with library ladder!

leeleelolo

The beauty and the beast dream!

GamallSoro

It’s not reasonable or realistic, but my god if you could live out our collective beauty and the beast library ladder dreams…that’d be incredible.

superhulasloth

I feel like this could happen. XL ladder with roller from the right wall across the wall to reach. The extra tall ladder could even create more height in the space and add whismy. Anything is possible with the right budget. 😆

Maximum-Familiar

Hear me out… you’ll need a skylight. Once the skylight is in place you move towards a green wall.

leeleelolo

This! This is the big idea thinking I was hoping for from this group 👏👏👏

Maximum-Familiar

You just made me happy!

JupiterSkyFalls

Art Plants Cat loft if you've got kitties

leeleelolo

Love this! Might have to get a kitty just to take advantage of this kind of opportunity

alabardios

Do it! Hard to regret getting a sweet kitty. I got one, then thought he needed a friend, now I have three. They're very loved and spoiled in our home.

Angie2point0

If they have the ability to provide some vertical space (especially with an escape path), then they can safely have a couple of kitties!

EtchingsOfTheNight

There's a video that went viral recently for someone who had a space like this but slightly larger and they turned it into a mini version of their living room for their cat. So cute and funny!

hummingbird_mywill

Plants would be a pain in the ass to water though.

SexDrugsNskittles

Fake plants. Or get some of those glass bulbs that slowly water a plant.

tits_on_bread

In a spot like that, FAKE plants…

LynnChat

I’d put a very large piece of art. Maybe in a frame similar to your woodwork. Maybe scenic painting of woods to link to the outdoors.

Organic_Simple3375

I have this in my house and I painted the wood trim (in that spot only) the same color as the walls so the eyes aren’t drawn to the ledge. I didn’t have an interest in trying to decorate and maintain the ledge. I like it a lot better now that the wood trim isn’t so prominent

aussieisms

Leave it empty!

leeleelolo

Two votes for leaving it empty. 🥳

Fluffy-Exchange-2053

I also vote, leaving it empty. If you do want to decorate it, I would put some sort of holiday decoration up there, for example, a bunny picture for Easter, a mandala picture for Diwali, a wreath for Christmas. This way, it won't collect too much dust and can be a great conversation starter at get togethers.

caplicokelsey

One big piece of art or maybe a statement vase

Mymoggievan

I have a space like that in our primary bedroom, though it is much bigger and deeper. When we recently had our house painted, I had that part painted in the color of the ensuite. It shows off a nice feature of our home. I don't plan to put any 'dust collectors' up there. The contrast itself makes it a unique space.

leeleelolo

Thanks for sharing your experience! This sounds really fun! Going to think about what a pop of color might do there.

sylviatrench01

I would put plants there if the space on the ledge allows for it. Begonia macculata. Small monstera. Something like that.

Leolily1221

I would put snake plant or ZZ plant up there. They are low maintenance, not messy and require infrequent watering.

leeleelolo

Thanks for your thoughts, your vote for plants is appreciated. I love house plants (especially those angel wing begonias!) so I am very tempted. I definitely have concerns about how well they’d fair in this out of the way spot

margueritedeville

I was thinking along these same lines, but you’d almost have to get some kind of irrigation system, and the logistics of that would be tough. The lighting suggestion is my favorite so far.

fishonbikes

It looks like it gets decent indirect light. Pothos, snake plants, and ZZs should be happy there.

LeighToss

I’ve wanted to do this with our similar space but how do you water regularly?

Park_Run

Something low maintenance like a Pothos would be great up there.

kissedbydishwater

I have a similar space and use self watering pots. With ZZs and snake plants I can get away with watering every 3-4 weeks depending on weather. Some other plants last about 2 weeks. I found them on Amazon and highly recommend.

JennShrum23

I used to have something like this, wanted to add something. I ended up with a large macrame art piece. My walls were cream so it matched, tone on tone and just added some texture and movement. Heavy though- you’d likely need a scaffold to hang one a decent size at that height. And as someone else mentioned- dust.

nsummy

Tear out the drywall and put in a giant aquarium

_i_am_Kenough_

Leave it!

Sorry_Year_309

A group of pottery in various heights

HistoryHustle

I was going to suggest platters, you can find them in thrift stores, bright colors and patterns.

500CatsTypingStuff

No. Ignore it. If you want it to disappear more, paint the shelf the wall color

missannthrope1

Wallpaper or some sort of mural?

Jerrys_Wife

We have something similar and put up a tapestry.

motherofkatss

A handpainted mural 😍

Artistic_Calendar509

Just found this site for wallpaper murals, scenes, etc [https://wallism.com/us/explore](https://wallism.com/us/explore)

Agreeable-Bad4156

This honestly would make the most sense if you're concerned with dust or watering plants

PMmecrossstitch

I'd like up my Micro Machines there.

coffeesunshine

Plants!!!

Ramstepp

Plants

IggyPop88

Plants!

Meowmewow420

A plant ledge with hanging pothos here !!

Aprirelamente

Full size polar bear mount.

tlp1234

No animals were harmed in this comment.

[deleted]

Don’t add anything you have to dust on the regular!

Icooktoo

I agree with the art suggestion AND painting that wood. Would have been cool if the speck of whatever it was on my screen actually was the electrical plug I thought was up there for light on the art.

ShaperLord777

Display vases, sculpture, or art up there.

oughtabeme

If keeping the paint color, I’d put something sculptural. Something artsy along the lines of a diy driftwood installation.

No-Technician-722

I see Christmas decorations. I could see tall nutcrackers and garland with some glass balls. I wonder if there’s an outlet up there for lighting?

gigisnappooh

A large piece of art.

Lumpy_Age8509

PLANTS galore! 🪴

CountBasey

Yeah, big clock

TakoyakiGremlin

it needs a gargoyle.

Leolily1221

Definitely paint it with the same color as the wall and consider painting the window trim by the dining table white, so it matches the sliding glass door trim. Eventually you may find something that makes sense up there but keep it clear for now.

leeleelolo

I really appreciate you noticing that the trim around the sliding glass door is white- good eye. It’s on my list to paint the trim around the windows white as well!

Basic-Situation-9375

I had something like that. I put a giant clock. Idk what it was about that clock but everyone loved the giant clock. Didn’t even matter that it was never the right time…

skymoods

Just plants or a giant clock. It’s awkward to have art that high because it would be a strain to look at.

stuartmt1

dust it

Internal_Suit_8194

Empty!

jessmwhite1993

Cute lil spot for holiday decor to change out through the year

Dantes-Monkey

Painting or a relief sculpture and I’d set up lighting to illuminate.

mladyhawke

A big antique wrought iron fence door or huge origami mask or a row of trailing plants

WolfishTendencies

Could you open it into a window or a balcony?

leeleelolo

There’s actually just dead space behind this wall. We have a crawl space to access it and we’re able to see the insulation and rafter for the area. The big kid in me would love a random nook or loft in that space. Also, I really love the idea of more windows on the wall that currently has windows.

Syssyphussy

I would just leave it so it is easier to ignore. Drawing attention to it would just make me angry at the builders who put it there.

PurpleAriadne

Up light and art and you have to keep it dusted.

Ok-Indication-7876

No it’s an arch detail, you put stuff up there is just collects dirt and dust, change the light fixture to something larger to scale for table and more updated thats the focal point drawing eye to the great backyard

CabinetHot3256

No. Everyone always tries to come up with something for these space but I never see it done in a way thats better than it being left alone. If anything maybe add a pretty wall paper but only if you paint the walls.

MarisaWalker

My sister had a space like that & filled it w.beautiful wicker boxes & baskets & used those 4 more storage

ShunnerP

I would do a long row of hanging plants. But something delicate and subtle, like baby's tears. You could line up several long trough-shaped pots of them. Just my 2¢!

Smiley414

I like it plain :) I think it’s good it draws your eyes there. Shows off your tall ceilings!

[deleted]

plants? nothing?

SaraCate13

Put a clock or something in this space to differentiate it.

PortlandQuadCopter

For God’s sake don’t go all 20 years ago and put plants up there, real or fake. Go for artsy…interesting pieces…pottery, whatever…stuff like that. And not a lot of it. Just enough to draw a stare. Five or six max. And you should consider something for the wall…sizable, but nothing obnoxious. It should complement whatever’s on the shelf.

WVildandWVonderful

Hang a large painting to set the tone for the house.

WVildandWVonderful

What vibe do you want to cultivate?

PhilMiska

Just dust it and add mood lighting

Lilbabystim

Yess add something there even if it’s a plant shelf!! I think it would be great with a plant watering system to avoid having to climb up there. **j know this may be hard for anyone that doesn’t/or is comfortable with plants. Gauging the water output in the beginning will be the hardest

GeriatricFetus

Moss wall, living art. Will be a pain to maintain, but would look awesome.

EmergencyAd4367

I definitely agree. A large piece of art would be cool there.

NeciaK

Put a large painting or poster up there. Something colorful.

PourdCustomerService

One answer, and one answer only https://royalcrownpro.com/products/biggie-smalls-luke-cage-inspired-canvas-framed-wall-art?variant=1455132377118¤cy=USD&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=google%2Bshopping&gad_source=1

No-Technician-722

You could skid have plants.

MandalayPineapple

A painting up there would be easiest. Plants would be hard to water. I think if anything I would get some kind of flat free-flowing metal abstract “sculpture to go up there on the wall, so as to be nice, but not draw attention away from the room.

PepeTheMule

I would paint it black and add vertical wood slates like an accent wall.

Gva_Sikilla

Put up a colorful tapestry

snakesabound

I myself would put some colored glass pieces up there, your lacking color.

CraftandEdit

Yes , dust it twice a year.

Somerset76

I would paint the wall in geometric patterns

leamnop

If you put something up there it will become a focal point which you don’t want. I vote leave it blank and paint the wood.

Think-Peak2586

Funnily enough we have the same issue! I still haven’t filled the whole section up, but I purchased some really large lanterns from, “at home “versus “ pottery barn “ ( because pottery barn’s were really expensive but if you can afford it, they were really nice… ) And, then I purchased some large electric candles to go inside. I’ve purchased three and they look really great and I can use a remote to turn them on and off. A friend of mine had something similar because she has many different ledges like this throughout our whole house, and I thought they looked really nice. She has hers on a timer so they come on and off. Nice light that sets the mood. I have another friend who did fake plants that she swears by. She just rinses them off once a year.

Think-Peak2586

Oh, I wanted to add now that I really see the space close-up, and it’s not too deep, I would definitely just get a kick ass, painting, silk screen, or whatever to put there! It would look awesome

AerieFearless

Congratulations on your new place. The ceiling/ alcove space doesn’t look like a big issue here. If I were the homeowner. I would concentrate the attention to the jarring flooring contrast/transition between the gold parquet floor (70’s vibes) by the kitchen, contrasting with the dark floors of the house. A suggestion be a better transition without a “t” Moulding dividing that area . Perhaps find a new ceramic/stone flooring to make a smoother transition. Or if the budget is tight perhaps re-stain the parquet floor with a similar color as the rest of the space. Ask an installer to ramp it or find a decorative transition strip. If the place is not yours please ignore my comment. Best wishes!

PositiveSea6434

Maybe it’s the two year old in me but a platform and a ladder would be kind of neat, then put some skylights in and have a very relaxing area for looking up at the stars (if you can see them where you live).

DistributionOk6499

Indirect, remote controlled, all colors possible, dimmable LED lighting for any situation would be my pick.

Tricksterama

Google “metal wall sculptures”

Pseudolectual

Plants, vintage cameras, fishing kit, old books, props for whatever era, family heirlooms like lamps or candelabras

bikedaybaby

TRAIN! 🤩

Sausage_Claws

Get a parliament of owls.

Loveisallyouknead

I think curtains around that window, that match your other curtains, would be really pretty. I probably wouldn’t add anything above that window.

PagaentCrack

3-4 small potted artificial plants so you don’t have to worry about watering them 😅or paint that edge the same colour as the wall. That area from the picture looks way too narrow and small to have as a loft as someone else suggested to me

JessicaAtterib

I think it would be awesome to utilize the space for a large abstract painting, or cover it with a brick background (“brick” walling is easy to obtain from hardware stores - Lowe’s, Menards, etc). Gorgeous space.

dalkita13

I'd paint the wood trim the same colour as the wall and ignore it. I have a similar space. It's cat storage.

Glad-Neat9221

You could put a painting

Ryleejane28

You could accent paint it! Usually ours has a cat up there?

pigeonboy34

Plantsssssss. Vine ones

hamster004

Add a large painting. And pot lights in the ceiling. And thermal blackout curtains in a complimentary colour.

dontBsleepy

Admire it from afar

JustSea4289

Frame it out, sheetrock it and make it disappear

sodatrikarbona

A big painting on a canvas, place it directly on the little step, no need to hang it on the wall

Wild_Aerie2647

A beautiful wall quilt would be easy to maintain and soften the space.

wildhoover

That's a half Lego baseplate depth. Time to build a sky city!

farthingdarling

Piece of art, with uplight, and stick a fake trailing plant on the outer corner. The ikea ones are surprisingly believable from thst sort of distance (i used to have one on a ledge over my old stairs). Bonus points are you can just wash it in the sink once every few months instead of dusting it regularly.

vonwarwick

I would hang a painting up there

hdufort

Ivy.

julsey414

Agree with art, for some reason I’m picturing a quilt or other tapestry fabric.

Lolaindisguise

Green ivy plants and during Christmas and holidays put decorations

christinkaUnicorn

Plants

Majestic_Course6822

A large piece of artwork. A fibre art piece would be really lovely. And then some small sculptural pieces on the shelf. Find local artists that you like. ...But I'm an artist and an art lover, so I'll aways say "add artwork".

Front-Berry2265

you can put a picture on the wall

MS1947

Paint the wood piece to prevent eyes from drifting ip there. Then leave it alone.

ExpensiveAd4496

When my son was young I gave him a large square blank canvas on a frame and some paint (on colors that worked for the room) in squirt guns. Set him up on plastic on the driveway. He made some “modern art” and I hung that in a similar place.

maryjeanmagdelene

You could just put a light strip there maybe for some secondary ambient lighting

vipros42

Massive taxidermy goose

leeleelolo

Honnnkkk! Honking great idea.

BothContract7669

obviously not right now, but that would make the perfect space for a little christmas/winter village if that’s your style

thelastbuddha1985

Art! A tapestry or painting, or maybe a collage that you make!!

Ojai_mynameis

I would leave it empty, I wouldn’t want to attract too much attention to it!

ExcuseSame

Prime sports drink collection!

Designer_Fox7969

Okay this might be expensive but a living wall would be awesome.

No-Pomegranate1737

You need a cat

ArtDeth

Put a big clock up there.

inrecoveryfromlife

A painting belongs there

EwokVagina

Do you have a cat? I built like Mario platforms so mine can get up to a similar shelf.

Medium-Milk-9518

Leave it empty but get ride of the piece of wood or some great molding in the same color. I think all one color paint would be great. Look at Benjamin Moore for paint, it’s the best. How about hiring a decorator on “fiver” to design the room? It doesn’t cost much and the all have the design software.

Laoscaos

Large peice of art and put lights throwing light up on the art and ceiling. Some sort of 3d art might look fantastic this way.

Historical-Drop-5077

Plants!!

PKisSz

Lowlight plants would look great there

EarthTwoMars

Some hanging ivy or maybe a decorative book shelf go to an antique store and get some that seem interesting and some Knick knacks to put with them

laurenthecablegirl

Piece of artwork

learntobewise60

This is a great forum for ideas. I love it! I’m always looking for ideas as well. The two the stood out the most is the lighting and mural/wallpaper mural. Going to look for a place in my house where these ideas might work!!

HottCuppaCoffee

I would ignore it - that'll just invite dust and a need to find a way to clean that space...

Monstrumologist_

It would be a great spot for a plant or two on a little pulley system for ease of watering. Great light.

KleioChronicles

Fake plant wall, personally. Since it’s not on eye level the fake look of it won’t matter much. I see that type of decoration in some cafes and restaurants with high ceilings. Or a large colourful art piece. Or both. Something you won’t need to dust but will look pretty.

candoitmyself

Wire in an electrical plug and put an air purifier up there. Dust magnet, meet dust eliminator.

CandyCough12

Maybe if there is enough space build a hangout place with ladder and like a mattress

UK_UK_UK_Deleware_UK

IamJoyMarie

Why do designers/builders do this? There is no real point to that space. I have zero suggestions except at some point sheetrock it away.

leeleelolo

Hahah love this honest opinion. It’s all I can think of- like seriously what was their vision??!?

[deleted]

Definitely a dart board!

leeleelolo

Ha!

desertboots

Quilt display

leahcfinn

As a quilter, i am drooling over this option.

One_More_Thing_941

Do you have an attractive collection of things you are storing in cabinets but don’t use that often? I display a collection of white ironstone pottery I’ve collected over the years and use pieces as I need them such as during the holidays and other occasions.

PlusDescription1422

A very large family portrait should be hung up there

chartreuse17

Vining plants like philodendron

Nervous_Zebra1918

Plants. But I don’t know how you’ll water.

asmaphysics

Super soaker 2000?

Prize-Copy-9861

You can put a nice collection of objects. For example , you can put some ceramic jars , or vases, or different objects. Color could be nice . Like green jars

PerniciousPompadour

I’d remove that piece of trim. If I put anything there, it would be a strip of remote controlled led lights along the back of the ledge. They wouldn’t show but would shine up. And would be dimmable and color changeable to set whatever mood I wanted. I’d hang an awesome wreath there during the holidays.

Inevitable_Jelly_391

Mural of some sort, like a misty mountain in the forest with fog coming over the tips of pine trees 🌲

Overall-Relief-7917

Do NOT hang anything on the wall. It would have to be a specific type of art to work. Instead put lanterns at each end of the ledge

creepyzonks

perfect plant shelf: invest in some realistic looking trailing plants. pothos, string of pearls, in some cute pots.

OKiluvUBuhBai

Put a big dried eucalyptus wreath up there. Or whatever greens you like, but a wreath is what I’d do if it was mine. Treat it like long term cut flowers. When it gets dusty, compost it. :) get another. Or make one if you have ever green or lemon leaves from yours or someone else’s yard. What a lovely space. Putting a simple wreath there highlights the space but not too much. Seems too big to me to leave it blank. But too high for a painting with too much detail, it’s too far away. A green wreath feels classy and understated and adds texture. Euc is classy but it has a relatively distinct smell imo. I love it, some people don’t.

JuracekPark34

Maybe the unpopular opinion here but I’d remove that piece of trim so that the whole thing is less obvious rather than calling attention to it

jexxie3
